INSIDE EQUIFEST Box Offices are located on both the North and South side of the Tony’s Pizza Events Center (TPEC). Tickets (wristbands) are available daily at the box office March 18, 19 & 20, 2022 from 9 am until 8 pm daily. Single day is $20, and 3-day is $50. Kids 12 & under are FREE. EquiFest Workshops & Lectures are just upstairs from the Lobby (or up the elevator if you choose). The lineup is stellar, as usual! Learn why data matters, succession planning with livestock, results of the Equine Economic Impact Survey, fundamentals of happy horse behaviors, history lessons about the Nicodemus Buffalo Soldiers, stories on the horse Comanche, check out Kanopolis and Tween the Ears contest winner, learn more about Western Dressage, meet one on one with Phil Haugen, check out an equus film of equestrian adventures, learn about various equine therapy programs and of course there’s the Legendary Kansas Horsemen’s panel!
Shopping. Go East off the Lobby to the Great Plains Manufacturing Convention Hall where you’ll see vendors filling the room. Go West off the Lobby to the TPEC Arena Concourse where you’ll see MORE vendors all around the concourse of the Main arena!
In the main TPEC Arena, come see Chris Cox, Michael Gascon, and Phil Haugen providing horsemanship help. Plus, a Western Dressage Demo with Gail Matheus and Marie Maloney will be presented. Don’t miss the Draft Horse Feed Team Races and Mounted Shooting Finals! Come see Fort Riley Commanding General’s Mounted Color Guards, Nicodemus Buffalo Soldiers, American Freedom Drill Team Riders and Trixie Chicks too! Experience the Friday and Saturday night Ranch Rodeo with its own kind of thrills! During the weekend the ever-beautiful Breed Showcase will prance through, exhibiting skills and traits that are breed characteristics. You may learn something new about these horses! Right now, an incredible Grand Finale is being developed and it will be well worth your time to stay until the end!
South from TPEC, just across the street, is the Saline County Expo Center (SCEC). Check out some awesome trailers and tractors on display. If you’re hungry you’ll find food truck vendors with anything from barbeque, gourmet burgers and the list goes on! These are situated west of Ag Hall Arena and East of the 4H building. You’ll find plenty of seating for you to duck inside any exhibit building—Ag Hall, 4H building or Kenwood Hall—to sit and enjoy your food! 8 v 2022 EquiFest of Kansas Official Program
INSIDE EQUIFEST From East to West at SCEC there is something in EVERY building! Starting on the East at Barn 2 you’ll see the Kansas Farriers Association’s annual competition. On Friday they will compete in Individual Forging, taking raw steel, heating it and building horseshoes, from 9 am to 3 pm. On Saturday, watch a two-man draft shoeing competition from 9 am to 10:30 am and after a short break they reconvene again from noon to 4 pm for a live shoeing competition!
Welcome to the Stall Barn. Next building over is the Stall Barn, also called Exhibition Hall, where the exhibiting horses will be on display. Check out different breeds of horses, big and small, Fort Riley’s Encampment, plus you might see a petting zoo too. Visit various breed organizations and equine businesses on display in the Stall Barn!
Then you will come to Ag Hall Arena. This is the historic brick arena building built with 1922 war bonds. It’s a nostalgic place! Come in and sit a while with your food truck goodies in hand, snacking and watching one of the great competitions that will be happening! There you’ll find the horse judging competition, a Draft Horse competition, Mounted Shooting competition, demonstrations by Trixie Chicks and a trail clinic by the Horse Guru, Michael Gascon! On Sunday, come see Phil Haugen then catch the fast action dual sanctioned Breakaway Roping competition hosted by K-State Rodeo Team!
Head on west from there to the 4H Building, or Ponderosa as we like to call it! Step inside to more retail vendors and the KHC Foundation Silent Auction. You’ll find some top-notch vendors, clinicians and workshop speakers, stage entertainment and more. Cowboy Poetry and Music by Del Shields provides a relaxing rest amid the fast-paced activities elsewhere. Don’t Miss Cowboy Church on Sunday with Pastor Steve Stafford and music by Geff & Dawn Dawson.
Next over is Kenwood Hall & Kids’ Corral! MORE shopping and a place for the kids to play! Interactive workshops and live demonstrations are being developed to present here. So much to see and do!
Keep your eyes open as there will be neat things to look at everywhere you go! 2022 EquiFest of Kansas Official Program v 9

CLINICIANS CHRIS COX As one of this country’s leading horsemen and clinicians, Chris Cox has spent a lifetime learning from the greatest teachers of all, the horse. Raised on a cattle ranch in the wilds of Australia, Chris has had opportunities that most horsemen of this day and age will never experience. With only horses for transportation, and a cattle ranch as his life, Chris learned at an early age how to appreciate the abilities and tradition of the great men and horses around him. With his practical, straightforward approach, Chris teaches horse people how to achieve results. Influenced in his early years by both the English and Western traditions, he has implemented a proven style and technique that can be applied universally across all disciplines. Chris has travelled throughout the world doing demonstrations and clinics for nearly 30 years. • • • • •

WORKSHOP SPEAKERS Chris Blevins, MS, DVM
Wendy Bowles
Dr. Chris Blevins received his master’s degree from Kansas State University Animal Science and Industry in 2004. In 2006 he graduated from the College of Veterinary Medicine at Kansas State with a doctorate in veterinary medicine. Following graduation, Dr. Blevins did a large animal/equine internship in Indiana at Janssen Veterinary Clinic and Purdue University Veterinary College. In 2007, he became an associate veterinarian at a mixed animal private practice in Savannah, MO. Dr. Blevins joined the faculty at Kansas State University in 2009 and is currently a Clinical Professor, Equine Field Service. His primary interest is in equine preventative care and management including equine dentistry.
Wendy Bowles is a Conservation Worker at Kanopolis State Park near Marquette, Kansas. She has worked at Kanopolis State Park for 31 years. Prior to employment with the state of Kansas, Wendy worked as a Field Biologist for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service at the Rocky Mountain Arsenal in Denver, Colorado. She is a graduate of Colorado State University and has a B.S. in Wildlife Biology. When Wendy started at Kanopolis there were 1.5 miles of mapped established trails. After working with Ellen Querner and NARTC in 1992 for a NATRC ride, Wendy requested to keep the trails that she and Ellen had laid out and open them for public use. These trails have been mowed and marked every year since 1992 giving Kanopolis 27+ miles of trail open to equestrians. This was the beginning of the equestrian trails and campgrounds in Kansas State Parks. Wendy has received approximately $580,000 in grants over the years. Most of the grants have come from the National Recreation Trail Grants and the money used to build Rockin’ K Horse Campground, purchase equipment, purchase signs and materials and make repairs. Wendy has done private consulting on trail construction projects in western Kansas. Wendy also serves as a Naturalist in the park. She presents nature programs to approximately 1,000 participants each year. Wendy says: “make an effort to learn something new every day and a conscious effort to learn from everyone you meet”

Deb Juhnke
Captain Tess Brunstein (formerly Kornacki) - Regular Army officer and presently a doctor of dentistry at Fort Leaveworth, Kansas. Tess has been a life-long horsewoman since she was old enough to walk, starting with ponies and advancing to serious horses and foxhunting. These days she also includes eventing (as time and Army allow). She was a member of US Pony Club for most of the years of her youth. She has also served an Army tour in Korea for a year and took the opportunity while in Asia to get into the "back woods" of Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand and the Philippines. She was always on the lookout for horses, but sometimes had to substitute an elephant. Her present horse is an off-the-track thoroughbred that she loves and has trained for cross-country and foxhunting. Captain Erin Fetzer (formerly Kornacki) - Erin is a regular Army officer and presently a physician assistant for elements of the 1st Infantry Division at Fort Riley. In this capacity she has served in Poland for some 10 months and traveled throughout Europe where she has also kept a keen eye out for horses. She has visited the Spanish Riding School in Vienna, Austria and is proud of the US Army which preserved the breed in 1945, wresting the Lipizzaner horses from Russian control. She too, as her twin sister, has been a rider since she was old enough to walk, a Pony Clubber, a life-long foxhunter and is presently teaching a Thoroughbred-Shire cross the subtle benefits of dressage as well as cross country riding and foxhunting.
Deb’s passion is the advancement of equine welfare through education. Robert Kornacki
Ron McDaniel
LTC Rob Kornacki, US Army (Retired), came to serious horse activities in his mid-30s thanks to his wife Cathie. He has judged foxhunts and fox hunted across the United States and in England where several years back he was the riding chaperone for four US Pony Clubbers, chosen nationally to foxhunt throughout England. His greatest riding thrill was being allowed to take out cross-country into the British countryside over fences, a past Grand National competitor named Alpenstock owned by the British Army military school at Sandhurst. Rob has also participated in the Abdallah Shriners' professional rodeo as a member of a wild horse riding team, winning $$ two out of three nights (and being bruised three out of three). He was also a staff member for the Fort Leavenworth Hunt for over 20 years and occasional huntsman as needed.
Ron and his wife Nancy live in NW Arkansas. They have horses, dogs, and just enough cattle to be in constant debt to the bank. Ron works in the Equine division for Merck Health Company and day works for area ranches. As a testament to his cowboying skills, the cow boss at Adams Cattle Company said, “Hiring Ron was like losing two good men.” Ron and Nancy actively support their church, as well as the Remount Foundation, a therapeutic facility that helps our men and women returning from combat, and the CALL which is an organization in Arkansas dedicated to not only raising awareness about the need for families to take in foster children but is run by members who are foster parents themselves. Ron is truly grateful to have made his living working in the Animal Health Industry. Reciting poetry has taken him all over America, from Florida to Alaska. In 2015 he competed in the National Cowboy Poetry Rodeo (NCPR) and won the Humorous—

Dawn Miller Dawn Miller, OTR/L, received her Bachelors of Science degree in the field of Occupational Therapy from the University of Kansas in 1986. She met her husband, Gary and moved to Tulsa, Oklahoma where she began working with the pediatric population in early intervention, customized therapeutic equipment, school systems, and private therapy clinics. She received her certification in Neuro-Developmental Therapy (NDT) for children in 1989 and began specializing in neuro-muscular function and movement disorders. Dawn began working for Poss-Abilities Children’s Therapy Group in Merriam, KS where she continues to serve children with neuro-muscular disorders and cognitive challenges. Recently, Dawn began a non-profit organization called Mane Motions Therapy Foundation, an outreach mobile therapy service designed to enhance the benefits of horseback riding by using a mechanical horse, the MiraColt. This device will provide riding opportunities to children who would not have access to actual therapeutic riding experiences. She hopes to take this service to schools, therapy clinics, and therapeutic riding facilities in the four state regions to reach under-served children with special needs. As an adjunct to actual riding experiences, Dawn hopes her services with the MiraColt will work together with current riding facilities to increase access for these children as they transition to the benefits of actual horseback riding. Dawn plans to continue to work on growing her foundation and becoming certified in Therapeutic riding and HippoTherapy in the future.

LEGENDARY KANSAS HORSEMEN Richard Clower, reƟred farrier I started shoeing horses at age 20 and graduated from Horseshoeing school in 1967. I shod horses full Ɵme for 53 years. I started out shoeing saddle bred, walking horses, and standard bred. I slowly changed to quarter horses, halter, race, and performance. I was lucky enough to work with some of the best trainers in the naƟon. I also shod dressage horses. I consulted with a number of vets in the Wichita area concerning lameness issues. The vets would email me XͲrays of horses and I would shoe the horse accordingly. My pickup was my oĸce, eaƟng estabͲ lishment, and supplied to the hilt with horseshoeing equipment. Between the years 1963Ͳ2010 as a hobby, I owned trained, and drove standard bred racehorses (troƩers and pacers). I have lived in Winfield my enƟre life and now enjoy woodworking and building Habitat houses and working in the yard when my wife makes me. My wife Sheryl and I have 6 children and 14 grandchildren. We enjoy visiƟng Branson and aƩending the grandchildren events.
Alfred Janssen, horseman & photographer My interest in livestock photography was encourage during my college deͲ gree in Ag Journalism. During our courses I used hors, farm and ranch photos to illustrate arƟcles in local, regional, and naƟonal publicaƟons. I was blessed to be able to blend my love of horses with my life as a farmer. This also alͲ lowed me to add horse photography as an avocaƟon. Beginning in the late 1960s through the late 1980s I traveled as far northeast as New York and as far northwest as Oregon taking photos of horses, horse farms and horse people. I had the good fortune to photograph some of the very top horse farms and show horses of the Ɵme. Always pursuing a dream of raising good horses, I assembled a handful of quality brood mares and was able to breed them to top notch stallions. Many of their oīspring were successful in the show ring and achieved AQHA Register of Merit and AQHA Superior and AQHQ Champion awards. The highlight of our show horses was Zan’s Tiīany Ann, 1982 Reserve World Champion 3ͲyearͲold mare, Superior Halter ROM award winner in five performance events. She was also a qualifier for the Superhorse compeƟƟon. Tiīany was by Zan Parr Bar and out of a favorite mare, Sagey Ann, AQHA Champion. Sagey Ann was the dam of mulƟple AQHA award winners. I credit the photography business for opening the doors to many opportuniƟes to become acquainted with people in diīerent parts of the country who shared my interest in good horses.

SPECIAL DEMOS The First Infantry Division (1ID) Commanding General’s Mounted Color Guard is a special ceremonial unit that provides community relations and ceremonial support to the First Infantry Division, Fort Riley, and the United States Army at the local, regional, and national levels. The CGMCG is one of only seven active equestrian units in the Army. The mission of the CGMCG is unique because Fort Riley was the home of the US Army Cavalry School. The CGMCG helps to continue the historic tradition of the mounted cavalry through demonstrations and community engagement activities. All horses in the CGMCG are bay colored mustangs and quarter horses. The feature, which most distinguishes the CGMCG from other mounted units, is the inclusion of an 1871 covered escort wagon in the formation. The wagon is an original, restored wagon that was used to bring rations and ammunition to resupply cavalry troopers on the battlefield in the western frontier.

The American Freedom Drill Team Riders from North Central Kansas return to EquiFest once again to entertain and open both arenas on Sunday. This team, established since 2012, has traveled to the Medicine Lodge Peace Treaty, Abilene’s Chisolm Trail Days, Lawrence Christmas Parade, Scott City Rodeo, all over Kansas, up to Nebraska and over to Missouri performing at rodeos, festivals and parades. They’ve even been known to give pony rides at these events. Some honors and highlights include performing at the Kansas State Fair in 2019 on Sept. 11th honoring America’s Veterans & Military and performing the opening ceremonies for Naval Officer Installations in Hutchinson. The AFDTR loves riding and loves celebrating this great country and the men and women who previously or currently serve in the military! God Bless America!

Buffalo Soldiers were African-American regiments of the Army that were created in 1866 at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. They served in peacetime Indian wars, the Spanish-American War, both World Wars, and the Korean War. “We started the Nicodemus Buffalo Soldier Association in 1995 with the purpose of bringing the African-Americans in the West to life,” First Sergeant Barrie Tompkins said. The small town of Nicodemus in northwest Kansas Graham County was founded by newly freed slaves in 1877. Some early residents of Nicodemus served as Buffalo Soldiers who fought Indians, captured cattle rustlers and thieves and protected stagecoaches, wagon trains and railroad crews, Buffalo Soldiers from Nicodemus served in the 24th Infantry Regiment and the 9th and 10th Calvary Regiments.’ The Nicodemus Buffalo Soldiers Association was formed in 1995 by Commander Barrie Tompkins. Members began participating in historical re-enactments across the country. They were the first park rangers for Yosemite National Park. Geronimo, Sitting Bull, Billy the Kid, and Poncho Villa are people Buffalo Soldiers actually encountered or caught and never got the recognition. Buffalo Soldiers had the lowest desertion rate, the highest enlistment rate, and their alcohol rate was zero because no town would serve them. The Nicodemus Buffalo Soldier Association strives to keep their performances as historically accurate as possible. According to Tompkins, the group wants to educate spectators on the soldiers who weren’t written about in history books. “You get a chance to actually see and meet Buffalo Soldiers in authentic uniforms on horseback,” Tompkins said. “Of course, we are not from the 1800s, but we want to do everything historically accurate as close as we possibly can, to give you that feeling.” After performing drills on horseback, the re-enactors try to give the audience the chance to ask questions about the 24 v 2022 EquiFest of Kansas Official Program
history of the cavalry, including where they got their name. “The Native Americans noticed that the hair on the hump of the buffalo looked like the hair on the black man. So they started calling them the Buffalo Soldiers, not out of making fun of them, but out of great respect for them.” After President Truman desegregated the U.S. military in 1948, the Buffalo Soldiers’ days were numbered. The all-black units were disbanded in 1953. Barrie Tompkins However, their legacy endures. Twenty three Buffalo Soldiers received the Congressional Medal of Honor. They’re the highest decorated cavalry regiment in all of U.S. military history. Buffalo Soldiers helped settle the West. They strung telegraph lines. They delivered the mail when Pony Express ended. Their contributions are numerous and great. First Sergeant Barrie Tompkins and several members of the Nicodemus Buffalo Soldiers Association appeared in two TNT movies. They were filmed in Teddy Roosevelt Roughriders starring Sam Elliot and also appeared in Buffalo Soldiers with Danny Glover. The Nicodemus Buffalo Soldiers Association presents an important part of history most never knew about. Excerpts from an article by Frank J. Buchman, WIBW News, March 3, 2021.

Heather Hagan, 2022 EquiFest Cover Art Heather grew up in the Rockies of Colorado, on the back of a little buckskin pony lovingly named after her best friend. Elementary notebooks were decorated with doodles of fantastical creatures and fair maidens. When not drawing or riding, she was entranced by the world around her. Largely selfͲtaught, Heather began painting in 1991, under the tutelage of her art teacher and mentor. Painting became much more than just a hobby as the years went by and her talent flourished. It became a means of expressing her emotions, her dreams, and aspirations. Her art remained on the back burner as she raised a family and focused on a career based around horses. In 2010, she received her BSA in Game Design and later went on to study post graduate Photography. Heather returned to her artistic roots in recent years and has discovered a reborn passion for painting. Fueled by half a lifetime of experiences, her work reflects her thoughtful and curious nature. Each piece, an extension of herself, reaches out and gently asks the viewer to look within. She now resides in a small Montana mountain town and paints full time.

Paso Fino The Paso Fino horse reflects its Spanish heritage through its proud carriage, grace, and elegance. Modern care and selective breeding have enhanced its beauty, refinement and well-proportioned conformation that conveys strength and power without extreme muscling. With its lively but controlled spirit, natural gait and presence, and responsive attitude, the Paso Fino is indeed a rare and desirable equine partner. Often considered the Cadillac of horses—one ride will show you why. The High Plains Paso Fino Horse Association was organized in the summer of 1998 with 66 members and 210 horses. One of the purposes of the formation of this new region was to have a smaller geographical territory with a higher concentration of members so we could become more involved together in the name of our Paso Fino horses. Since then, our membership has grown to over 100 members. Activities include the American Royal Show, the American Royal Parade in Kansas City, Missouri, Beef Empire Days parade in Garden City, Kansas, co-sponsoring the Gait to the Future show in Tulsa, Oklahoma, organizing a new show in Springfield, Missouri, participating in Equi-Fest, and participating in several all-breed shows. TTaaking notes on their observations and remarking on colors, breeds, gender of horse, or any other identifying marks to verbally explain who or what they saw w,, they will also note positive and negative comments about a performance and thus create their “Reasons” for placing the class how they decide. After written (Scantron) placings are completed, the youth quietly practice what they might say for their “Reasons” speech. Next, they will go before officials and provide a speech of reasons on 2 or 3 of the classes they p placed. Awards are given to top 10 for each age division (Juniors 13 and under or Seniors 14 & over), for how they placed the classes overall, for reasons given on Halter classes and reasons given on Performance classes, as well as cumulative points for all the above. Additionallyy,, top 3 cumulative points for teams will be awarded. YYo outh have multiple opportunities for achievement. This contest builds skills of observance and communication.
