2 v 2022 Iowa Horse Fair Official Program
Welcome to the 36th Annual IOWA HORSE FAIR The planning for the first Iowa Horse Fair was started in 1983 as an ambitious project by a steering committee of the Iowa Horse Council. That steering committee set the following goals: w To educate the horse-owning public and horseloving public through a myriad of events w Establish an event to be held in April w Use any profits to fund projects of the Iowa Horse Council that would Benefit equines and their owners The first Iowa Horse Fair was described as "Iowa Horse Fair and 1984 National Youth Leaders Symposium." Since that time, the Iowa Horse Fair has continued to have a significant youth involvement and has had continued youth involvement longer than any other horse fair. Since the first Iowa Horse Fair in 1984, this annual event has grown by leaps and bounds. However, the purpose remains the same: educate, entertain, and provide active support for equine owners and those who work with horses and other equines, through the efforts of a dedicated group of volunteers. While many horse fairs are produced by paid professionals, the Iowa Horse Fair is planned and conducted primarily by volunteers. The first core committee was made up of many of the Council members. These included: Julie Bailey, Sally Blount, Burton and Marilyn Butler, Carolyn Hasbrook,
Thatcher Johnson (deceased), Jim and Bette Kiser, Sid Larson, Dan Reiste, Dr. Tony Prickett, Carol & Kenny Crawford and Sam Smith. The 2022 Iowa Horse Fair committee includes Chris Austin, Danielle Kunze, Melissa Cash, Lindsey Oelschlager, Amanda Austin, Marlene Austin, Rebecca Howe, Amanda Beveridge, Dave Ostrander, Jill Ostrander David Beary, Sue Rubke, Crystal Brown, Duly Zwiefel, Carrie Spain, Rose Genter, and Andy Wood. SPEAKERS & DEMOS THERESA BURNS Often the first question asked when a horse is experiencing issues is whether it is a behavioral issue or a physical issue. If a behavior is unreasonably difficult to train out of the horse, is consistent, or keeps coming back, then you might consider the possibility that it is a discomfort or pain issue. Horses do things for a reason, and it pays for the owner or trainer to understand what that reason might be. Whether it's a subtle difference in movement or something that's creating a training challenge, by paying attention to what your horse's body is telling you, you may be able to avoid training and physical issues with your horse. Simple Masterson Method® bodywork techniques can help to release this discomfort. Theresa Burns, certified in the Masterson Method®, will demonstrate these simple yet highly effective techniques. GRETA CUMMINGS & SHERI DILL-BILLINGS Greta has experience as an equine professional dating back to 1995. Greta has been a lover of horses for as long as she can remember. She got her first pony when she was 8 years old and her first horse a short time after. She participated in 4-H from the age of 9 through her senior year in high school. Greta rekindled her father’s and grandfather's love of horses and their herd grew. Many times you could find Greta driving one of the family's teams in Amana giving complimentary rides to visitors. In addition to competing on the 4-H level, she has also successfully shown Hunter/Jumpers, Dressage, Western Pleasure, Ranch Pleasure and Riding, Sorting, and Driving. Greta has a passion for good horses and bringing out their best, no matter the discipline, and helping fellow riders do the same. Greta's mentors have been Richard Shrake (since 1996) and Melanie Smith-Breidt (since 1993). Cornerstone Farm was founded near Mt. Pleasant, Iowa when Greta married in 2002 and the Cornerstone Horsemanship teaching and training program began. In 2019, Sheri Dill-Billings joined the Cornerstone Horsemanship Program as a partner and the program has grown exponentially. For Sheri, it has not been about becoming a horse trainer, but progressing in her own horsemanship skills and sharing them with others. Sheri also brings in life skills she learned from her day job (now retired) with Alliant Energy as a supervisor which were also applicable to coaching others with their horses. Sheri was hooked on learning more about horsemanship skills in the early 2000's and since then has completed Chris Cox's five step horsemanship program and mentoring under him. Sheri brings in over 40 years of experience with horses. Like Greta, Sheri got her first horse when she was 9 and participated in 4-H through her senior year. For Sheri, her focus has been more on enjoying her horses as a family activity and with friends. Her true passion lies with colt starting, working with problem horses and then seeing them succeed with their owners. Before partnering in Cornerstone Horsemanship, Sheri hosted several boot camps for fellow riders to help them grow in their skills and confidence. Cornerstone Horsemanship now offers the Boot Camp Clinic as well as additional levels to allow riders to progress in their skills. Check out www.CornerstoneFarms.org for more information.

SPEAKERS & DEMOS INDALECIO MACEDO
KELLI PAULSON
Indalecio Macedo was born and raised on the family farm in Jalisco, a state in southeast Mexico. His late father, Indalecio Macedo Sr, was well-known throughout Mexico for his equestrian expertise and training abilities. So naturally Indalecio entered the family horse training business known to many as Dinastia Macedo (Macedo Dynasty). At just 12 years old, Indalecio began training his first horse. This experience taught him patience and that a horse cannot be rushed into learning what a human expects. Indalecio has over 20 years of dedication, patience, and passion for horses. The breeds that he most often works with are Friesians, Andalusians, and variety of warmbloods. This resume gives him the ability to develop a horse's natural ability to excel in Alta Esquela (High School Horse Training.) This is a program that contains elements of dressage, combined with movements based upon classical Spanish riding. A typical horse in this program will train for a minimum of 2-3 years to master all elements of Alta Escuela. Indalecio has had the great honor of training with the masters of the Real Escuela Andaluza del Arte Ecuestre, which is Spain’s most prestigious and oldest equestrian training school. No matter where he travels to train, compete or entertain, his favorite spot is the Iowa Horse Fair, where he is able to share his joy of beautiful horses and the people who admire and enjoy them. For more details on Indalecio and his beautiful horses visit www.imhorsetraining.com.
Do you want a horse that is soft, willing, relaxed, confident, responsive and a joy to ride? For the last 15 years Kelli has taught riders how to get these qualities from their horse. By learning and practicing the right tools and skills, the pieces can come together. It is possible to learn timing and feel, and have a willing horse. It is all about the foundation. When the foundation is right, you can accomplish anything with your horse. Then you can go anywhere…and it’s fun! Kelli’s passion is teaching people, who have horses, but want something more. By adding dressage concepts to their training, riders can get the “look” they want. Training with trail obstacles creates willingness, confidence and responsiveness. With the right tools and lots of practice, the horse of your dreams is possible! Kelli has started hundreds of colts, ranch roped, trail ridden, competed in extreme trail, dressage and Working Equitation, founded and operates Trail Rider Challenge, is co-author of the Working Equitation Handbook and a Purina Regional Ambassador. Kelli helps riders learn in a kind, simple, clear, effective way and looks forward to meeting you! Improving the Sidepass Friday w 5:00 w Jacobson Arena

RACHEL WEHRHEIM Rachel Wehrheim’s passion for riding started at a young age. It didn’t matter what the horse was or what saddle, if any, was on its back, she was going to ride it. Her openness to breeds and disciplines provided her with a whole range of experiences influencing her riding and training styles. Along the way, Rachel has been fortunate to work with master horsemen in a variety of disciplines from western horsemen to classical dressage masters. Over the last 15 years, she has studied with classical dressage masters from the Spanish Riding School of Vienna, Portugal, Switzerland, and Spain in order to maximize the potential of her Lipizzans. Throughout these experiences, Rachel found a common theme amongst successful horsemen—a good and effective riding position helps bring out the best in a horse. Rachel works with her students to improve their positions so they can become one with the horse. As they become one, the horse’s gaits begin to improve as he relaxes and comes onto the bit. Rachel enjoys working with those that are open to learning and want to improve themselves and their horses. To learn more about Rachel and lesson opportunities, please visit her website at www.medicineriverfarms.com.

IOWA HORSE COUNCIL www.iowahorsecouncil.org LIKE IOWA HORSE FAIR ON FACEBOOK The Iowa Horse Council (IHC) is a volunteer-based, non-profit organization that believes in the value of horses and horse activities. The IHC serves and supports the entire horse industry through communication, education, and promotion. The American Horse Council defines a state horse council as “an association which actively seeks, throughout the state, the participation of individuals and groups from all breeds and all types of horse activities, amateur or professional. Its primary purpose is to further the common interests of horse people and promote the entire industry.” Your state’s horse council is involved in:
Newsletter The IHC publishes The Iowa Horse which includes legislation updates, calendar of events, Iowa news and information on equine events, and various educational articles on horse ownership such as nutrition, care, medical updates, and safety.
Awards The IHC regularly recognizes the contributions made to the equine industry by Iowa horsemen and women. Awards will be presented at the Iowa Horse Fair and the plaques listing the recipients are on permanent display in the Clubhouse at Prairie Meadows Racetrack & Casino in Altoona, IA.
Scholarships Iowa Horse Fair This annual event is the most visible function of the IHC. Every year, volunteers donate many hours to plan and conduct this event. The Iowa Horse Fair provides an excellent showcase for member associations to promote their breed or interest. Proceeds are used to promote the horse industry in Iowa through scholarships, grants, and sponsorships.
Grants & Sponsorships The IHC has developed both a grant program and a sponsorship program to assist with various equestrian activities. The grant categories include education, equine welfare, and trails and applications are accepted annually. Sponsorship applications are accepted anytime. When the programs are funded, applications can be found on the IHC website.
The IHC is proud to offer scholarship opportunities to high school seniors and adults to continue their education. Applicants must be Horse Council members and will be required to assist at the Iowa Horse Fair in some manner. Applications are available on the Iowa Horse Council's website.
Legislation The IHC provides information on upcoming legislation and the legislative process. We encourage our members to establish working relationships with their Federal, State, County, and City officials in areas that affect horses. If members are proactive, it is far easier to protect their interests than after an issue has been passed into law. The Iowa Horse Council needs everyone’s (amateur or professional) support through membership and volunteerism. Whether you are a member of an association, trail rider, veterinarian, business owner, youth, compete in shows, involved in the racing industry, have a horse in your backyard, or just love horses, the IHC will help keep you up to date on what is going on in the horse industry. Everyone is important to the unified growth of Iowa’s horse industry!
