Horsemen’s Council of Illinois

Welcome to the 29th Illinois Horse Fair!

Paula Briney

Legends & Youth…The Trail to The Future The Horsemen’s Council of Illinois recognizes the need to bring seasoned equestrian families together with families that don’t currently have a horse. A very important part of our mission is to educate the community to the lifestyle we are passionate about. Through Illinois Horse Fair, we can do just that. We offer educational clinics, demos, and seminars on many different topics. We are excited to have the vendors back in the Expo building for a one-stop shopping experience. A tour of the barns gives you the opportunity to talk with the exhibitors about their horses and the fun they have with them. There will be representatives of many different horse breeds of all sizes to look at, pet, and learn more about. For those many people who worked long and hard on this labor of love called Illinois Horse Fair, there can be no better testament to our success than for you to go away from this event having enjoyed your time here. Thank you to all our volunteers! Without you, this would not be possible. Thank you to all the vendors and participants in our clinics, demos, seminars, and youth events! Thank you horses of all breeds and sizes for coming out and sharing what makes all equine enthusiasts love you so much! Thank You for joining us here at Illinois Horse Fair 2018!! Sincerely, Paula Briney, HCI President

Ralph Moses In his opinion, there is nothing as elegant and beautiful as a well-executed barrel or pole bending run. To get that elegance and beauty requires the highest possible level of communication, relaxation, partnership, and harmony between the horse and the rider, all while being done at speed. This only occurs through thorough preparation. Ralph has made a career study of the application of engineering and natural horsemanship principles to speed events. With a deep engineering mindset, Ralph analyzes and prepares for every possible situation in a speed run. This mindset approach balances all factors that affect a speed run and then develops an optimal plan for the horse, rider and environment. With over 35 years experience with horses, Ralph has studied with many professional horsemen including Jack Brainard, Ray Hunt, John Lyons, Karen Rolfe, and Pat and Linda Parelli. ED CROTHERS Ed Crothers, The Equine Analyst, grew up on a farm in southern Ohio. Ed's father was a blacksmith and horse trainer. He instilled the love of horsemanship in Ed at a very young age. Working with his father, Ed was exposed to a large number of horses, some of which were very disrespectful. As Ed's riding ability increased he found himself riding more and more problem horses. After graduating high school, Crothers went to work as the farm manager for Delmar Farm in West Union, Ohio. Delmar was a Quarter Horse farm that averaged a normal boarding of 60 horses. After 2 years at Delmar Farm, Ed accepted a Farm Manager position at Classicway Farm in Morrow, Ohio where the daily boarding was 400 to 500 thoroughbred horses. It was during this time that Ed had a breakthrough development in his horsemanship skills by interacting with the farm veterinarians and chiropractors. Ed began to see that bad behavior was caused by health issues and not attitude problems. In 1990, Ed became farm manager for Frisch's Big Boy Farms in Morrow, Ohio. This thoroughbred farm bred and trained horses for the race track and the daily boarding was 400 In 1996, Ed left Frisch's Farm to start out on his own, establishing Cedar Brook Farm. This move not only allowed Ed to return to his home, but he also had the freedom to train horses with the techniques he developed. Today, he continues to breed and train thoroughbreds, but also breaks and trains horses for pleasure, barrel racing, trail, etc. Over the last 20 years, Ed and his staff at Cedar Brook Farm have trained thousands of horses, including many that others could not train. His holistic approach to horsemanship is to use veterinarian and chiropractic treatment to ensure soundness before the horse starts training. Basic training then begins in the round pen, using the techniques Ed has developed allowing the horse to learn basic skills and respect. Body language plays a large role in this process, and Ed has developed sound procedures to bond with the horse and foster cooperation quickly. The current practice at Cedar Brook Farm is to train a client's horse and then train the client on how to perform basic round pen techniques to address common problems and allow them to assert author-

Speakers ity and build respect from the ground. Ed continues to do clinics teaching his techniques and proving his theory that 90% of disrespect is caused from pain. Through chiropractic and veterinary care Ed shows how finding and relieving pain in a horse can completely change a horse’s posture and attitude in a matter of minutes.

Over the years, we have successfully led many efforts to create new Illinois laws and amend existing laws for the benefit of horse owners and the Illinois equine industry. We have fine-tuned legislative proposals, informed and advised horse owners of existing laws which affect them, and defended existing laws. A partial list of such legislation includes: w 770 ILCS 40/49: Added Stable Keepers provisions to the Innkeepers Lien Act to allow liens or sales on horses if boarding fees are not paid. w 510 ILCS 67: Illinois Equine Research and Promotion Act - established the Illinois Equine Industry Research and Promotions Board, and authorized the Board to levy an assessment on horse feed to offer grants for projects pertaining to equines. w 510 ILCS 65: Illinois Equine Infectious Anemia Control Act - established this law to protect the Illinois equine population from equine infectious anemia being brought into the State through the importation of infected equidae and to control the spread of equine infectious anemia within the State. w 745 ILCS 47: Equine Activity Liability Act - established this law to encourage equine activities by delineating the responsibilities of those involved in equine activity. w 225 ILCS 115: Veterinary Medicine & Surgery Practice Act - added two exemptions (7 & 8) in Sec. 4 of the Act to allow horse owners to treat their own animals under certain circumstances.
