Welcome to the 30th Illinois Horse Fair!
Paula Briney, President Horsemen’s Council of Illinois
After 3 long years, we finally see that the Coliseum renovation has begun! As with any renovation project, we have some obstacles to work around this year. This may make Illinois Horse Fair Chairman, Mr. Tony’s ginger beard turn a bit grayer. This year’s event features some great equestrians. Tarrin Warren, Executive Director of the Confederation for Working Equitation, is here to teach us about Working Equitation with clinics and demos. Steve Lantvit, star of RFD’s television series Steve Lantvit “Sure in the Saddle,” has returned to the Illinois Horse Fair. Steve will be covering a variety of topics to help horsemen/women achieve their dreams. Sarah Sanders, from Ride with Excellence, will be instructing us on working with the gaited horse. While the focus is on gaited horses, Sarah has used her training method on many different equines. Hannah Kaufman is here teaching a barrel racing clinic. Melissa Hughes Smith is teaching the fine points of riding saddle seat. Best of all, she is presenting to you the various breeds of horses and the different uses and abilities they have. Our theme for this year is “Hooves and Heartbeats.” For so many of us, this is our life and lifestyle. As the outside world becomes more removed from the agricultural lifestyle, it becomes our job to help others understand our passion, teach non-horse people how wonderful our horses are, and how much they enjoy our company and the jobs we give them. Illinois Horse Fair gives us the opportunity to educate and to share all the things that make the horse such an important part of our lives. Thank you for joining us at Illinois Horse Fair 2019. We are glad you spent time with us this weekend. We look forward to what the future holds for the Coliseum, the Illinois State Fairgrounds, and Illinois Horse Fair. ~

Horsemen’s Council of Illinois
ILLINOIS HORSE FAIR CO-MANAGERS Tony Troyer Once again, our show is working around the construction of the iconic Coliseum! That is a good thing! As I look forward to the Illinois Horse Fair going back to the venue that we all have missed…it has been three very long years of trying to maintain the IHF. I want to thank all of you, the horsemen, for your support! Thank you to our vendors, volunteers, the carriages running up and down Central Ave, awesome clinicians, and most of all the horses! Horses bring joy and added meaning to the lives of humans. Horses can help heal broken bodies and souls. They are a universally understood symbol of power, beauty and grace. We who have come to know this marvelous creature understand how our lives would be diminished without them. This is where you will feel the “Hooves and Heartbeats!” The largest horse-centric venue in the state of Illinois approaches. The 2019 Illinois Horse Fair will bring together thousands of horse lovers from a wide variety of disciplines—Arabian, American Saddlebred, Quarter Horse, Fox Trotter, Minis, Percheron, Morgan and others within our world of horses. It is our horse lover’s convention and celebration. Every year the Horsemen’s Council of Illinois undertakes the colossal work of creating our Illinois Horse Fair in order to share the world of horses with others. Our industry, our horses, our state, our communities, our friendships are all strengthened through sharing our horse passion. The Illinois Horse Fair provides a single place where you can grow, learn, create, consume, and rejoice in the power and beauty of horses. My hope is that for everyone reading this will invite a friend, even if your friend is not familiar with horses and all they can contribute to us, to come and enjoy the horses at the Illinois Horse Fair. A great friend and past HCI Board Member once said, “Through sharing we can strengthen and expand our industry and make sure that our passion for horses lives on through successive generations. When we share a passion, when we know to our bones that something is good and healthy and decent, we owe it to each other to protect it for one another and for future generations. Past President Sheree King PhD.” The Illinois Horse Fair has many offerings this year. Steve Lantvit, from RFD TV, has six different entertaining sessions and three lectures to educate us on a number of topics. Tarrin Warren will be one that pulls just about everything a horseman can do that is not just for the performance horse, but the ring work that you can take to the trails! Working Equitation is vastly becoming the newest performance sport. Working Equitation brings the east and west together with dressage, horsemanship, with the fast pace of timed obstacles! Hannah Kaufman is going to show us all those little things that can shave off seconds running the barrels! Sarah Sanders will be flying back to us from across the big pond where she has been teaching in Dubai. Sarah’s “Ride with Excellence” techniques work on all horses! She will show us how to get more from your gaited horse…is it the horse or the rider? Missy Hughes will give you the society lesson of a lifetime! Over her career she coached the US Saddleseat World Cup team in 2008 and the US Saddleseat Young Rider team in 2015. Our nightly entertainment will also have you sitting on the edge of your seat! Friday, March 1st, in the Midway Trailer Covered Arena will include the Fairgrounds Showdown! These kids will push it to the limit for the title of all around champion! Three days of action through the Horse Fair gets kicked off. As an added extra, we will again have a celebrity goat tie with top trainers and our IHF Queen and contestants! On Saturday March 2nd, IHF brings to you another action-packed night with a Ranch Rodeo! Top hands from all over will make up four-man teams which will show us how to doctor the wild cow or saddle and ride wild broncs! So, what more could you ask for in an action-packed 3-day weekend!

Featured Clinicians Steve Lantvit Renowned, award winning horseman, Steve Lantvit, captivates the equine world with a fresh, innovative approach to training individuals and horses. Coupled with decades of experience and knowledge across multiple disciplines, Steve's training program is built on trust, gentle hands, and a true partnership regardless of the rider’s discipline or experience. Steve's teaching style provides his students with the "why" and not just the "how" or the "what" giving them the necessary tools to be successful on their own. His techniques are applied on the trail, ranch or in the show pen, with an emphasis on creating a light horse through correct timing and clear communication. Steve strives to help fellow horseman/woman achieve their dreams, overcome obstacles, and to challenge themselves to do the best by the horse and for the horse. Some of Steve's accomplishments include multiple World Champion and Reserve World Champion titles in Ranch Horse Associations by himself and his clients in Youth and Amateur divisions. Traveling across the US sharing his knowledge and passion for horses, Steve enjoys conducting clinics, presenting at Expos, and brings his teachings right into your home with his television series, Steve Lantvit “Sure in the Saddle” airing on RFD-TV on Thursdays at 3pm & 11pm EST. Sarah Sanders Sarah’s passion for horseback riding began at age 10 when she rode her first horse. Little did she know that it would turn into a lifelong journey for and take her around the world. Sarah was fortunate enough to have a wonderful mentor at a working horse farm in Southern Illinois who focused on horsemanship and the horses well-being. Sarah learned how to start horses when she was 16 years old and has been starting horses every year since. That was also, the same time she started teaching beginner riding lessons. Over the last two decades, Sarah has worked with various masters of English and Western disciplines to polish up her skills. She also competed in local endurance rides, as well as Jumpers, Dressage, Eventing, and Barrel Racing. In 2001, she competed in the Tevis Cup, which is recognized as the toughest Endurance Ride in the world. Her trusty steed and Sarah came in 23rd place out of 250 starting riders. In 2007, she rode her Saudi Desert Bred stallion to a Regional Arabian Working Hunter Over Fences Grand Championship. Most importantly, in 2009 Sarah became a Monte Foreman nationally certified rider, instructor, and trainer. For 5 years, she had the life changing opportunity to work at a Humane Society horse rescue. She trained and rode all types of breeds of horses, including gaited horses and draft horses, donkeys, and mules. The horses had a better chance of adoption once they had ground work skills and were started under saddle. Teaching has become a great passion of Sarah’s and she really enjoy helping riders understand how to really ride their horse and understand the biomechanics of riding. It’s is a joy for her to see folks riding with confidence and in harmony with their horse. Ranch Rodeo
Saturday 6:30 PM Midway Trailers Covered Arena
Tickets: $8.50 in advance $10.00 at the door
A ranch rodeo is a traditional type of rodeo in which teams of cowboys or cowgirls from different ranches compete against each other in events based on the type of work they do every day. Ranch rodeos differ from the more common PRCA-style rodeos in several ways. For starters, the contestants are not professional rodeo cowboys; instead, they are usually full-time ranch hands who compete in annual ranch rodeos for fun and for bragging rights. The events in ranch rodeos are more similar to the tasks commonly performed on a ranch, and the equipment and tack used are the same as those used during everyday ranch work. Instead of competing as individuals, the contestants in ranch rodeos compete as a team representing the ranch they work for. Though there are often individual awards such as “Top Hand” and “Top Horse,” the main prize is for the top overall ranch team. Sanctioning bodies include the Working Ranch Cowboys Association, which sponsors the World Championship Ranch Rodeo in Amarillo, Texas; and the Western States Ranch Rodeo Association, which sponsors the WSRRA National Finals in Winnemucca, Nevada. Competitive Events Most ranch rodeos consist entirely of timed events, with the goal being to complete the assigned task in the shortest possible time. Common ranch rodeo events include: • Calf branding – Teams have to find and rope specific calves (identified by a number they are randomly assigned) out of a larger herd of cattle, bring the calves to the branding area, and “brand” them by marking the calves with chalk. • Steer doctoring (or ranch vet) – Similar to calf branding, except the cattle are older and larger, and the event simulates bringing a sick animal in from the herd for veterinary care. • Team penning – Teams must sort off a few specific cattle (each identified by a specific number marking) from a larger herd and move those cattle into a small pen at the other end of the arena. • Wild horse race – Teams must saddle a wild horse and ride it across the finish line at the far end of the arena.

Over the years, we have successfully led many efforts to create new Illinois laws and amend existing laws for the benefit of horse owners and the Illinois equine industry. We have fine-tuned legislative proposals, informed and advised horse owners of existing laws which affect them, and defended existing laws. A partial list of such legislation includes: w 770 ILCS 40/49: Added Stable Keepers provisions to the Innkeepers Lien Act to allow liens or sales on horses if boarding fees are not paid. w 510 ILCS 67: Illinois Equine Research and Promotion Act - established the Illinois Equine Industry Research and Promotions Board, and authorized the Board to levy an assessment on horse feed to offer grants for projects pertaining to equines. w 510 ILCS 65: Illinois Equine Infectious Anemia Control Act - established this law to protect the Illinois equine population from equine infectious anemia being brought into the State through the importation of infected equidae and to control the spread of equine infectious anemia within the State. w 745 ILCS 47: Equine Activity Liability Act - established this law to encourage equine activities by delineating the responsibilities of those involved in equine activity. w 225 ILCS 115: Veterinary Medicine & Surgery Practice Act - added two exemptions (7 & 8) in Sec. 4 of the Act to allow horse owners to treat their own animals under certain circumstances.
