2 v 2020 Illinois Horse Fair Official Program
Horsemen’s Council of Illinois
Welcome to the 31st Illinois Horse Fair! Paula Briney, President Horsemen’s Council of Illinois Welcome to the 2020 Illinois E Q U I N E STRONG Horse Fair and the return to the Coliseum of Champions. This year’s Illinois Horse Fair brings you several great clinicians and demos. We are lucky to have groups that cover all kinds of equine uses from Mustangs and Veterans together to drill teams with parents and children working together with their horses. Our evening performances bring the fun of a ranch rodeo and Saturday night rodeo with all the thrills and spills with the intermission entertainment of the great Double Dan. The Horse lifestyle is what drives us all. I know I grew up with horses and wouldn’t change it for the world. I’ve had the opportunity to ride a lot of different horses and disciplines and have had a blast doing them all. And as each chapter of my life evolves, it always includes the horse and how we can draw new people into our culture and keep lands and the lifestyle within our grasp. Remember that the Illinois Horse Fair is the fundraising effort of the Horsemen’s Council of Illinois and It takes a village of volunteers to put on this endeavor. The funds raised from the Illinois Horse Fair go towards the education of our local and state governing bodies as well as the general public so that we can continue the equine lifestyle we all enjoy. We thank all the volunteers who make the Illinois Horse Fair a success and our Equine Strong alive.
Tony Troyer, IHF Chairperson Illinois Horse Fair is here! Which means spring is right around the corner also. What better place to go on a weekend when you have cabin fever! #EQUINESTRONG is our theme for this year. As all of us look back and look towards a new year, I believe there is a different meaning for each of us! What makes you #EQUINESTRONG? This year is the first time in 3 years that IHF is getting the use of the iconic Coliseum! We have two nights of action-packed RODEO for your entertainment. Friday March 6th is the Ranch Rodeo. Anything that happens on the farm or ranch is going to be asked here! Saturday March 7th is one of the greatest Open Rodeos in the area! That isn’t the only reason to attend both nights of Rodeo. We have an awesome pre-show with drill teams, professional trick riders, the big horses and by popular demand those cute little miniatures running the barrels! Dan James of Double Dan Horsemanship will show us his liberty horses which are always a crowd pleaser! New this year, we have an Open Freestyle Dressage Competition on Saturday afternoon. Check out some of the best Midwest riders performing Traditional or Western Dressage and Reining—this will be a blast! The Horsemen’s Council of Illinois has done our best to keep this show going for you. Have you looked at what it takes to continue helping each of the horsemen within Illinois? IHF is the only fundraiser that makes it possible to maintain legislation to keep your rights as a horse owner. The same week as we are setting up for IHF 2020, the Legislative Committee will be in full force at the Capitol and talking to the Illinois Legislators at IL Ag Legislative Day. The Trails Committee sits on the IDNR Greenway and Trails Council and meets multiple times a year with the Director of Lands and Chief of Parks to keep you riding on your favorite trails! Renew your membership at the HCI booth in the Expo Hall while attending. Speaking of the Expo Hall… This year we have your favorite vendors coming back and a good handful of new vendors! The variety is massive—just like the Clinicians! Double Dan Horsemanship will show you colt starting and liberty starting. Craig Johnson is coming over from his ranch in Iowa to teach us about Ranch Riding and some Reining. As an additional note, you can get signed up to have Craig judge a video of your choosing. He will sit down with you and have a one-on-one to give you his best tips on how to up your game! Larry Whitesell with Jennifer Bauer will teach about Gaited Horsemanship for any gaited breed. Melanie Michalak will offer lessons on music selection and setting dressage performance to music. Last but not least, HCI/IHF would like to thank our Sponsors— Midway Trailer Sales, Iron Saddle Ranch, and the Illinois Farm Bureau! Stop by to see them in the Expo Hall.

Featured Clinicians Double Dan James Born in Queensland Australia on a small cattle farm, James’ lifelong passion for horses began when he was just 6 weeks old. From the family milking goat to his first pony to the first colt he started in his early teens, Dan’s hunger to learn about training and understand horse’s thinking patterns has only increased. After studying at Longreach Pastoral College, Dan began traveling the world to gain a better understanding of horses. From starting colts in Hokkaido, Japan to starting over 300 horses a year at Washpool Lodge, Australia to working cutting horses for trainer, Punk Carter, to managing horses on a cattle station in Western Australia, Dan has studied with and learned from the best of the best. Dan has successfully competed in Dressage, Show Jumping, Eventing, Camp Drafting, Cutting, Reining and Colt Starting. Along the way James met his Quarter Horse stallion, Ari, Australian Stock Horse mare, Amelia, and Quarter Horse, Apollo, who were his first performance horses and remain part of the DDH Team today. James has spent his entire career wowing audiences, pushing the bounds of equine entertainment, competing on an international stage, and educating horsemen and women around the world. Dan first learned about liberty training from world renowned movie horse trainer, Heath Harris. From there Dan went on to train liberty horses for television, movies, photoshoots, and entertainment including starting liberty horses for the hit show Heartland, doing stunts for The Walking Dead, and training horses for Cavalia. James is a two-time international World Champion Colt Starter, a multiple time Freestyle Reining Champion, a multi-discipline crowd favorite several times over and a Mustang Makeover finalist. From winning the “Way of the Horse” at Equitana Asia Pacific in 2008 to winning the coveted Road to the Horse International Colt Starting World Championship in 2012 to winning the 2014 Quarter Horse Congress Freestyle Reining Championship to representing Australia in the 2018 World Equestrian Games to competing in the 2019 Run for a Million Invitation Freestyle, the richest reining event in equine sports history, James continues to wow judges, fans, and audiences alike with his incredible training techniques, elite showmanship, and unique understanding of how horses learn. Featured Clinicians Larry Whitesell & Jennifer Bauer Larry was a high school teacher for 12 years before training. He was trainer of the year in 2002 and won many national and grand national championships. He held judges cards in several breeds. Both he and Jennifer have studied under several world recognized classical masters. He has used classical principles to train horses for the last 30 years. Jennifer is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin-River Falls with an Equine Science degree. She has worked with riders from children to celebrities, teaching them how to better influence their horses with correct riding. Larry and Jennifer have done clinics all over the US, Canada, Europe, and South America. Their hope is to teach people to understand how to get horses to gait in relaxation and be safer more responsive horses. Their own horses gait with softness without gimmicks or force. www.gaitedhorsemanship.com www.whitesellgaitedhorsemanship.com Larry & Jennifer’s Schedule In Hand Work for Gaited Horses w Friday w 9:30 w Covered Arena Explanation of what brings out gait for horses genetically bred for gait. The work teaches the horse how to round the back and engage the hind legs while developing softness in the bridle. What Can Help the Gaited Horse Gait Better & Smoother w Friday w 11:00 w IL Farm Bureau Expo Building Seminar Room A discussion of how the horse works and things we should pay attention to in order for our horses to offer gait or gait smoother. Under Saddle Work to Bring Out Gait w Friday w 2:30 w Iron Saddle Barn 13 Arena Basic exercises to help the gaited horse develop softness and engage the hind legs. We want to be able to obtain gait without the horse being heavy in the bridle, making the horse safer and lighter. Under Saddle Work to Bring Out Gait w Saturday w 9:00 w Covered Arena More exercises to train the gaited horse according to biomechanics so the horse can offer gait while being relaxed and comfortable in his own skin. Gait Problems w Saturday w 11:00 w Iron Saddle Barn 13 Arena Understanding gait issues from the horses perspective. By understanding biomechanically why the horse is pacing or trotting, we can correct it easily. Do Gaited Horses Really Need Special or Different Equipment? w Saturday w 3:00 w IL Farm Bureau Expo Building Seminar Room A discussion on tack. Gaited horses are horses and correct training works the same for all horses. Done correctly, the training should bring out genetically whatever the horse does best. Diego Almeida is a full time instructor and manager of Middle Fork Forge Horseshoeing at Illinois. His activities range from daily lectures and practical instruction to office management and full time farrier practice. Diego became an AFA Certified Farrier in 2010, AFA Certified Journeyman Farrier 2011, Associate of Worshipful Company of Farriers 2016 and AFA Educators Endorsement in 2017. Operation Wild Horse Program Director Patti grew up the granddaughter of two WWII veterans. One a Marine who was captured on Wake Island and spent years as a POW in Japan. The other a Navy machinist who served on the USS Hancock. Without a firsthand understand of the struggles her grandfathers both endured during wartime service, Patti grew up knowing there were emotional scars from their time in service. As an adult she learned about PTSD and started to draw the lines to connect her experiences, those in her family and her grandfathers back to their experiences during WWII. In January of 2015, Patti approached Veterans R&R about creating a veteran program with horses. Patti is most well known for her success in the Dressage arena with her Mustang Stallion Padre. He is the first and only wild horse to qualify, compete and win at Dressage at Devon, the most prestigious Dressage show in the United States. She is an accomplished horsewoman of 35 years and is committed to improving the lives of our veterans and military families through their connection, growth and learning experiences with horses.

Ranch Rodeo
Saturday 7:00 PM Midway Trailers Coliseum
Advanced Reserve Tickets: $10 - $15
A ranch rodeo is a traditional type of rodeo in which teams of cowboys or cowgirls from different ranches compete against each other in events based on the type of work they do every day. Ranch rodeos differ from the more common PRCA-style rodeos in several ways. For starters, the contestants are not professional rodeo cowboys; instead, they are usually full-time ranch hands who compete in annual ranch rodeos for fun and for bragging rights. The events in ranch rodeos are more similar to the tasks commonly performed on a ranch, and the equipment and tack used are the same as those used during everyday ranch work. Instead of competing as individuals, the contestants in ranch rodeos compete as a team representing the ranch they work for. Though there are often individual awards such as “Top Hand” and “Top Horse,” the main prize is for the top overall ranch team. Sanctioning bodies include the Working Ranch Cowboys Association, which sponsors the World Championship Ranch Rodeo in Amarillo, Texas; and the Western States Ranch Rodeo Association, which sponsors the WSRRA National Finals in Winnemucca, Nevada. Competitive Events Most ranch rodeos consist entirely of timed events, with the goal being to complete the assigned task in the shortest possible time. Common ranch rodeo events include: • Calf branding – Teams have to find and rope specific calves (identified by a number they are randomly assigned) out of a larger herd of cattle, bring the calves to the branding area, and “brand” them by marking the calves with chalk. • Steer doctoring (or ranch vet) – Similar to calf branding, except the cattle are older and larger, and the event simulates bringing a sick animal in from the herd for veterinary care. • Team penning – Teams must sort off a few specific cattle (each identified by a specific number marking) from a larger herd and move those cattle into a small pen at the other end of the arena. • Wild horse race – Teams must saddle a wild horse and ride it across the finish line at the far end of the arena.

Over the years, we have successfully led many efforts to create new Illinois laws and amend existing laws for the benefit of horse owners and the Illinois equine industry. We have fine-tuned legislative proposals, informed and advised horse owners of existing laws which affect them, and defended existing laws. A partial list of such legislation includes: w 770 ILCS 40/49: Added Stable Keepers provisions to the Innkeepers Lien Act to allow liens or sales on horses if boarding fees are not paid. w 510 ILCS 67: Illinois Equine Research and Promotion Act - established the Illinois Equine Industry Research and Promotions Board, and authorized the Board to levy an assessment on horse feed to offer grants for projects pertaining to equines. w 510 ILCS 65: Illinois Equine Infectious Anemia Control Act - established this law to protect the Illinois equine population from equine infectious anemia being brought into the State through the importation of infected equidae and to control the spread of equine infectious anemia within the State. w 745 ILCS 47: Equine Activity Liability Act - established this law to encourage equine activities by delineating the responsibilities of those involved in equine activity. w 225 ILCS 115: Veterinary Medicine & Surgery Practice Act - added two exemptions (7 & 8) in Sec. 4 of the Act to allow horse owners to treat their own animals under certain circumstances. Special thanks to all of the family and friends who volunteered to help throughout the year.
