Horsemen’s Council of Illinois
Welcome to the 32nd Illinois Horse Fair! Paula Briney, President Horsemen’s Council of Illinois
Welcome to the 2022 Illinois Horse Fair! We got so lucky that the 2020 IHF happened before the state and the country were shut down for 2 years. We are now in our third year of the COVID pandemic and are finding the new normal. We have several exciting clinicians to watch. We also have the breed/sport demos to watch breeds and hopefully disciplines that will excite you as a rider. Our drill team program has expanded—they are so fun to watch. We are proud to be offering the mounted shooting contest which will happen every afternoon in the IEPB Covered Arena. The rodeo returns to Midway Trailers Coliseum Friday and Saturday nights. Come enjoy the excitement of the shows and shopping in the Illinois Farm Bureau Expo Building.
Tony Troyer, IHF Chairperson As I look forward to the Illinois Horse Fair going back to the venue that we all have loved, I want to thank all of you horsemen for your support! The last time I wrote to you was for the 2020 Illinois Horse Fair. Our show was only weeks before the massive lockdown of COVID 19! With 2021 being in a similar state, we just couldn't make the commitment to not bring you the best possible show and so it was canceled. WE ARE BACK! This year's clinicians are Jane Melby, PRCA and AllAmerican Barrel Racer, coming back from 5 years ago to show us the ins and outs of running barrels. Scott Stokes, Horsemanship, one of the humblest horsemen in the USA, to teach us lessons every horse should know regardless of discipline. Robin Krutke is a central Illinois hunter/jumper trainer that brings an awesome background and life experiences of how to put the gold and blue around your horse’s neck. Our vendors are back and ready to provide you with just about anything you could need! Breed Sport is back and ready to show you what talent Illinois has from at least three fast and precision mounted drill teams along with numerous other demonstrations! Our carriages will be out and running around to give you a ride from here to there also. You said you wanted more... Well, we have brought in a mounted shooting competition that will sure to give some excitement! Followed by two full nights of RODEO! Lastly welcome back the beloved miniature horses of Ann and Jeremy Nafziger. We are blessed to have these little guys back and may we all remember Ann—we lost Ann this past year. So, come cheer on these little horses that are big hearted, short to the ground, fast as the speed of light, and pulling machines! Jeremy will hitch up the six (we are hopeful for eight) on the stagecoach. God Bless, Tony Troyer
LARGE & SMALL, WE LOVE THEM ALL Ann Bayles-Nafziger, aka “Pickles” has always been known for her love of ALL horses and PURPLE! She passed away unexpectedly in 2021 after a short battle with cancer, leaving a huge hole in many hearts. Ann began working with horses as a young girl helping Grandpa Bayles with his Spotted Drafts doing parades, hay rides and local shows. Later, she worked with Crouch Belgians and the family’s Bayles Belgians to further her show experience all over the Midwest, East Coast and even to Canada. In 2009, she began her love of miniature horse with a pretty little filly named Rose and changing the farm name to Bayles Belgians & Miniatures. As of 2021, Ann and Jeremy have an 8-up hitch (plus one!) of miniatures to share with the world! With the help of friends and family, they participated in over 40 events a year including visiting local nursing homes bringing joy to all ages. Ann was an active member of the Illinois Draft Horse & Mule Association and served as secretary/treasurer for over 10 years. She also participated in the Illinois Horse Fair in various capacities for close to 15 years. Ann was loved by all, both in the draft horse world and the mini horse world. She encouraged all who crossed her path, both as a friend and in their own horse journey. Horsemen’s Council of Illinois

Featured Clinicians Jane Melby Jane Melby is no stranger to the winner’s circle. Her barrel racing career started with 4H and jackpots. Jane’s success there led her to high school rodeo where she won the Minnesota High School Rodeo Association State Championship all 4 years she participated. She still holds the record for most consecutive wins. She is a multiple World Champion, winning the International Professional Rodeo Association World Championship in 1993 and NBHA 1D World Championship in 1999. With her great mare, RC Back In Black, Jane qualified for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo in 2011. She placed in four out of ten rounds, winning three rounds. She finished the season ranked sixth in the World Standings. Jane made her second appearance at the Wrangler NFR aboard First Down Perk. She placed in five out of ten rounds, placing seventh in the NFR Average, and ending the year ninth in the World Standings. Jane enjoys spending most of her time giving clinics across the United States and Canada. Featured Clinicians Scott Stokes For as long as I can remember I’ve been around livestock. I was raised on a family farm where we raised beef cattle, stockers, and had a sizable pig raising operation. My dad always had a couple horses around even though he rode very little. I, however took full advantage of this opportunity. During this time in my life I learned that horses, cattle and hogs and dogs all respond similarly to like situations and stimuli. I knew nothing of horsemanship during this time but I sure learned how to ride. Being balanced, riding in a way that enhances the horse’s performance is an important part of being an effective horseman. In my late teens through my early twenties I trained some client horses as well as my own part time. I knew nothing of the horsemanship I study and practice now. I just did what anyone who knew more than me said do, most of which is not the best thing for the horse. I moved to Texas when I was 25 and have been buckarooing and or working with horses full time since. I found this style of horsemanship in the early 1990’s. I studied about it and researched it and watched a few clinics and decided this is what I want to do with the horses. My introduction to this horsemanship was with Peter Campbell. I did about 20 clinics with him over about 3-4 years and never looked back. My wife and I moved to northwest Tennessee in March 2006 and continued our business of riding horses in this style. It was at this time I also began traveling and teaching the horsemanship at clinics. I currently teach about 15 clinics a year and ride a few client horses as well as my own. I am truly blessed to be able to communicate with horses and people in the way I do. I continue to enjoy meeting new people and seeing where they are in their horsemanship journey as well as riding with old friends who have ridden with me for years! Sessions: Day one will begin with groundwork, pointing out several factors promoting proper form. Saddle work will begin as soon as possible without underscoring the importance of groundwork. Groundwork will be revisited as needed throughout the three days. Saddle work will begin with the most basic exercises and advancing to intermediate exercises as the horse and rider are ready. All exercises will be used to promote physical softness and lightness as well as mental softness and willingness. Exercises will be explained and demonstrated in a way that promotes proper form which leads to correct development, strength and balance of the horse. These topics will be covered daily and progressively throughout the six sessions over the three days. Featured Clinicians Robin Krutke Robin’s show career started at the age of 2 in leadline, by 4 showing in walk trot, and by 6 in jumping. Her first instructor was her mother Pam Siebert and still educates her. She then started taking consistent weekly lessons for 10 years from Hunter/Jumper instructor Peggy Lenz from Chicago, Il, while incorporating lessons from Grand Prix Dressage rider Maureen White, 4-star eventer Allison Springer, eventer Kiki Osborne, and countless clinics with many other greats! She gained a lot of knowledge through 4-H and pony club competing in hunt seat, jumping, dressage, western, halter/showmanship, games, horse judging, and driving. While in Pony Club, she submerged herself into anything she could learn about, obtaining her C-2 rating, riding in monthly clinics, and competing in rallies of knowledge, show jumping, eventing, dressage, and one of her favorites was games rally. Robin’s games team then went on to place second in the America’s Cup and winning the world Championship in Toronto, Canada. Through her teen years she competed in the Mid Illinois Hunter Jumper Association through adulthood to Northern Illinois Hunter Jumper Association in Chicago on ponies, Thoroughbreds, and various breeds of horses obtaining over the years several year-end awards and championships in equitation and Hunter over fences up to the height of 3’6” and becoming State Pony Hunter Champion 2 years in a row. Her desire to learn more after high school led me to Black Hawk College in Kewanee, Illinois where she competed on both the horse show team and horse judging team. She also had an internship to England working for British Show Jumper Michael Cooper for several months and another internship to Hunter Oaks Equestrian Center in Carlock, Illinois where she started her teaching career and learning the ropes of managing a boarding stable. Robin finally received two degrees in Equine Science. From there she started her own business at Hidden Hills Farm in Carlock, Illinois teaching lessons from ages 2 to 75, hosting camps and classes for Heartland Community College and the Town of Normal, training horses for clients, and continuing to show in Hunter shows and eventing around the state and country. Robin has since gone back to Black Hawk College to teach Hunt Seat classes in jumping, helped with their hunt seat show team, and hosted ride nights for Illinois State University at her barn. By far her favorite adventure with horses is instructing her children, watching them show, and going fox hunting! Ida Hammer is the creator and owner of MackinawDells 2 Whole Horse Hoof Care, founded in 2009. She has taught over 2,000 people around the globe about hoof care and personally trimmed over 200,000 hooves making her one of the most experienced trimmers and equine educators in the world. She has been a member and instructor for the AANHCP and the AHA, and is a current member and mentor for the PHCP. Ida's classes, available online and in-person, are based on her own vast experience and learning from other equine professionals such as Dr. Deb Taylor, Dr. Bowker, Pete Ramey, Ray Hunt, Jillian Kreinbring, Dr. Kerry Ridgeway, Deb Davies, and so many more. Ida believes to be a true student of the horse, you never stop learning and growing, and her educational material reflects that hunger to know. Ida has exercised horses on the track, enjoyed competitive trail rides, trained horses, loved mounted shooting, and has been blessed to have horses with her partner, Ada, for many years. When two of their heart horses were diagnosed as hopeless navicular cases in 1992 and again in 2004, Ida decided to dedicate her life to making the world a better place for horses and the humans who love them. What could have been a senseless tragedy, instead birthed Mackinaw Dells 2 Whole Horse Hoof Care. There are now over 100 certified trimmers from Ida's program and that number is growing every year to serve more horses. The online classes and revolutionary educational tools have made it possible for people to learn to trim all over the world. Ida is also working on her new book that will be released March 2022. Ida currently trims 20-30 head a week to keep her hand in the game, and is now focusing on sharing information and teaching future trimmers, horse professionals, and fellow HoofNerds: All for the love of the horse.

For nearly 40 years, an Illinois company KEL Equine Productions has provided equine props and rentals for numerous film projects, from major motion pictures to documentaries and television miniseries productions. The business began in 1979 when Luthin ran a very large Civil War reenactment group. The knowledge of appropriate uniforms and equipment for the time period made the group a natural fit to provide cavalry for movies that featured scenes from the Civil War. The company has contributed to nearly 150 productions, and Luthin has worked on about 60 of them personally. KEL Equine Productions has established itself as a leading provider for any movie depicting cavalry from the Napoleonic Wars through World War II. Luthin celebrates his 50th year in full-time veterinary practice in 2018. He says these days he can spend more time with the prop business because his daughter, Kate Luthin, runs the vet clinic.

18 v 2022 Illinois Horse Fair Official Program
Over the years, we have successfully led many efforts to create new Illinois laws and amend existing laws for the benefit of horse owners and the Illinois equine industry. We have fine-tuned legislative proposals, informed and advised horse owners of existing laws which affect them, and defended existing laws. A partial list of such legislation includes: w 770 ILCS 40/49: Added Stable Keepers provisions to the Innkeepers Lien Act to allow liens or sales on horses if boarding fees are not paid. w 510 ILCS 67: Illinois Equine Research and Promotion Act - established the Illinois Equine Industry Research and Promotions Board, and authorized the Board to levy an assessment on horse feed to offer grants for projects pertaining to equines. w 510 ILCS 65: Illinois Equine Infectious Anemia Control Act - established this law to protect the Illinois equine population from equine infectious anemia being brought into the State through the importation of infected equidae and to control the spread of equine infectious anemia within the State. w 745 ILCS 47: Equine Activity Liability Act - established this law to encourage equine activities by delineating the responsibilities of those involved in equine activity. w 225 ILCS 115: Veterinary Medicine & Surgery Practice Act - added two exemptions (7 & 8) in Sec. 4 of the Act to allow horse owners to treat their own animals under certain circumstances. Special thanks to all of the family and friends who volunteered to help throughout the year.
