Featured Speakers Stacy Westfall

www.westfallhorsemanship.com Booths L345 & L346 in the Cattle Barn

Growing up in Maine, Stacy got her first pony, Misty, when she was six. Her mother Sherri was Stacy’s only instructor in riding and training until she went to college. As Sherri looked on she would ask questions that prodded Stacy to think deeply about the mindset of the animals. The habit of getting inside the horse’s head, of thinking like a horse, became second nature to Stacy. Stacy always had a desire to train and to teach. With no professional trainers to observe in her area, she relied on the insights instilled by her mother and the instincts and lessons she learned from the horses. In high school, through the urging of a teacher, she found a college in which she could pursue a major in equestrian studies - the University of Findlay in Ohio. She studied under traditional-style training instructors including Steve Brown and Clark Bradley. She also worked for champion reining trainers Mike Flarida and Dan Huss. To all of the knowledge she learned from these mentors, she applied the “think-like-a horse” that had served her well in the past. In 1994, while at the All American Quarter Horse Congress, Stacy met her future husband, Jesse himself a talented reining trainer. They married 3 years later and then established the Westfall Horsemanship training facility in Mt. Gilead, Ohio. They have three boys, Caleb, Joshua, and Nathan. Like any good trainer Stacy’s aim has always been to have the most clear and precise communication with her horse as possible. Her goal in her reining was to make the reins unnecessary. While others have approximated that goal, Stacy made it a reality. In 2003 she won the National Reining Horse Association Freestyle reining competition riding with no bridle - and with not so much as a neck rope. She has gone undefeated for 2 years straight in major freestyle reining competitions and in 2006 she won twice while riding bridle-less and bareback. When in 2006 she entered the prestigious Road to the Horse colt starting competition, Stacy heard from more than a few people that she couldn’t possibly win. After all, she was facing some legendary trainers. When the competition was over, Stacy was the winner, after a convincing performance that clearly outshone her competitors. In 2012, Stacy was also inducted into the National Cowgirl Hall of Fame in Fort Worth, Texas. That little girl from Maine has grown to become one of the country’s top clinicians and competitors. While Stacy continues to compete, start young horses and train, she truly loves to explain to people what her Mom encouraged her to learn - to discover the why behind what the horse does. With Jesse, her invaluable coach, she tours the country offering clinics and making educational appearances at expos and other equine events. She is building the Westfall Horsemanship approach to create a program that is efficient and effective - with resources to compliment the clinics such as DVDs, equipment and an information-rich website and blog. Jim Masterson

www.mastersonmethod.com Booth L537 & L539 in the Cattle Barn

The evolution of The Masterson Method® began when Jim was practicing equine massage in 1997 and recognized that the horses were exhibiting certain neurological responses to touch as they released tension in the body. Using those responses to guide his work, he developed a system in which the horse actively participates in the process by cueing the practitioner where tension has accumulated, precisely how much pressure is needed to release it, and the moment it has been released. The result was a unique and effective method of bodywork called The Masterson Method®, which is easy to learn and accessible to anyone, regardless of your level of horsemanship. After years of practice and teaching, Jim has discovered that not only does this technique improve performance, it also facilitates new levels of communication and trust with the horse. Jim was the equine massage therapist for the 20062008-2010-2012-2014 USEF Endurance Teams, as well as for a number of equine clientele competing in FEI World Cup, Pan-American, and World Games competitions. Jim continues to travel the globe, teaching weekend and 5-day advanced seminars, Masterson Method® certification courses, graduating his Masterson Method certified instructors, as well as authoring books and starring in educational DVDs. Featured Speakers Vitor Silva

www.sonsofthewind.com Booth B33 & B34 in the CHS Miracle of Birth Building See the horses in the AgStar stalling area.

See page 28 for more information

Vitor Silva, raised in Azores Portugal, realized at a very young age that in order to achieve function with lightness and harmony there needed to be complete understanding between horse and rider. His studies of the masters of his native country, combined with his great passion for the horse, helped him develop a remarkable ability and finesse with horsemanship from groundwork to the high school level of classical dressage. After moving to the US with his dream of developing a riding school in the European tradition, Vitor established Sons of the Wind, School of Classical Dressage and Equestrian Arts in 1995. Located in Merrimac, MA, his full service training facilities and school provide every rider, from recreational to competitive, a venue in which to expand their abilities in a progressive manner on Lusitano schoolmasters, trained by Vitor, many of which perform to the Grand Prix level. As a pioneer in the industry, Vitor had the vision that the Lusitano horse would be a great match for the American rider. He had the insight to open the Lusitano market in the USA by importing the first Lusitano from Brazil back in the mid 1990s. He chose the Lusitano not only because of his culture but also because of the breed's nobility and athleticism. In addition to his school, Vitor teaches clinics and conducts classical dressage performances. Vitor, his horses and riders have performed across the US at venues such as Equitana, Equine Affaire, Minnesota Horse Expo and many other national horse venues. His troops also perform at venues for fundraising efforts such as Ride for Life, HorseSense for Special Riders and other advocacy events. These performances include spectacular aires above the ground, the precision of the upper level quadrille and the elegance of the dance with ground work and on long-lines. Viewers and participants can expect to discover new depths of their equestrianism and take their riding and horsemanship to new levels. Featured Speakers

Russ Krachun

www.kozakhorsemanship.com Booth B02 in CHS Miracle of Birth Building

Russ Krachun was born and raised in Odessa, Ukraine. As an adult Russ followed his dreams and immigrated to Canada with his family to develop his horsemanship. As he studied about horsemanship, he realized that the horse was often misunderstood. He decided to follow his heart and develop his own style of horsemanship using his own philosophy and his own methodology from the lessons and skills developed from his own life and experiences from the lessons he learned from the sport of fencing. His teachings make perfect sense to both horse and human, and help to bring a mutual understanding through cooperation, confidence, respect and trust. These results enable the horse to perform maneuvers and tasks that are asked of them without causing aggression, discomfort or abuse. Russ Krachun Kozak Horsemanship offers philosophy and methodology, combined with quality signature horsemanship equipment and educational programs that are designed to work together. A remarkable understanding is developed between the horse and the human without using or causing aggression. Russ’ philosophy and methodology has built him recognition throughout his clinics, seminars, lessons and training challenges. The welfare of the horse is evident throughout every aspect of his horsemanship. The Russ Krachun Kozak Horsemanship program is truly an education, and is what many say is the missing link of developing ultimate communication with our horses. MN HORSE EXPO COWBOY CHURCH Sunday 8:35-9:50 w Coliseum Arena

For the sixth year in a row, our Sunday morning Cowboy Church worship service will be led by Pastor Mark Rader and a few of the regular musicians from the Cowboy Church ministry of the Cherry Grove United Methodist Church in Cherry Grove (rural Spring Valley), Minnesota. Equine Facilitated Therapy (EFT) and the Masterson Method® Equine Therapy Specialist (MMETS) Training Program (Lecture) Friday w 11:00-11:55 w DNR Building Saturday w 4:00-4:55 w DNR Building

Horses helping humans in mental health and learning programs is fundamental to Equine Facilitated Therapy and Learning Programs. The interaction between the horse and human is a key component in this setting. Experience has shown us that when interactive Masterson Method® equine bodywork techniques are brought to the therapeutic setting in a controlled, structured and safe manner with the intention of helping the horse, the interaction also benefits the Equine Facilitated Therapy client. This interaction is unique in that, while it is for the client, it is about the horse. The one facilitates the other, creating the potential for both horse and human to benefit. The Masterson Method® program creates an opportunity for clients of equine assisted programs to “Give a gift to the horse” - their partner - while benefiting themselves in the process.

Often the origins of these problems lie deeper in the core and postural muscles of the body. The Masterson Method® is dedicated to teaching owners how to find and release hidden tension that may be affecting their horse’s performance, movement or behavior, by learning to read and follow what the horse’s body is telling them.

Colts in Training Program Friday w 5:00-5:55 w AgStar Arena Saturday w 11:30-12:25 w AgStar Arena

Each year the University of Wisconsin River Falls offers a Principles of Training Horses class where 50 two-yearold horses are started under saddle by UWRF students under the direction of faculty member Nathan O’Connor. The training class is offered the spring semester of each year and is concluded with the annual Colts in Training Auction where all of the horses are auctioned off to the general public. UWRF faculty member Nathan O’Connor and four of his students will give a presentation on the Colts in Training Program at UWRF. During the presentation the UWRF students will demonstrate the riding and ground skills that they have taught their two-year-old horses this past semester and will also give an overview of how the Colts in Training Program operates. Additional information about the UWRF Colts in Training Auction can be found at www.uwrfcoltsale.com. Visit Stalls 238-242 in the Horse Barn during Expo to see and learn more about the colts in training program.

Through these series of talks, Dr. Tweeten will share some simple but straight forward ways to deal with the spring coat shedding season. By using a set of effective tools often found in most tack boxes, one can easily: • remove loose hair • minimize damage to existing hair • utilize natural body oils already present on the skin and in the coat • minimize the formation of static electricity • encourage the growth of a healthy summer coat • develop a soft hand touch that encourages trust and strengthens communication

Reading Your Horse’s Body Language & Three Reasons for Groundwork Friday w 10:00-10:55 Coliseum Arena

In this demo Stacy will explain and demonstrate the three big reasons you should do groundwork as she works with a horse she just met. She will explain the body cues the horse is giving and how she is making decisions based on them. Your horse is always talking to you with his body language. Your ability to read his body language and make decisions based on what you see directly impacts how well you understand each other. Come test your skills by reading this horse’s body language.

Exercises for Collection and Speed Control Friday w 2:00-2:55 w Coliseum Arena

What if you had one pattern, the size of a round-pen, that you could use throughout your horse’s entire career? Stacy shares her favorite training pattern that she uses in the first 30 days and in her bridleless riding DVD. She will explain why it works so well and three different ways to use it.

Exercises to Improve Steering & Neck Reining Saturday w 10:00-10:55 w Coliseum Arena

Do you understand the difference between direct reining and neck reining? Are you accidentally damaging your neck rein cues while riding with two hands? Would you like exercises you can take home and use with your horse? This demonstration will explain this and more while using horses and riders Stacy just met who also desire to improve their horse’s steering. Watch as they are coached on the same exercises you can take home and do with your horse.

Whoa: Teaching the Stop from Beginning to Bridleless Saturday w 2:00-2:55 w Coliseum Arena

Do you wish you could stop your horse without pulling on the reins? Would you feel safer if your horse stopped easier? Do you wonder how people can stop without a bridle? In this demo, Stacy will show you exercises you can use at home to improve your horse’s stop. You will leave with a full understanding of how to improve the stop and you will see horses and riders that Stacy just met learning the exercises for the first time.

Bridleless Riding Cues Explained: How More Leg and Less Hand Can Improve Your Riding Sunday w 10:00-10:55 w Coliseum Arena

Why does bridleless riding fascinate us? Because it demonstrates a high level of trust and understanding between the horse and rider. What are the cues? Should everyone ride bridleless? This demonstration will explain a solid cue system that will allow you to understand how it is possible to have clear understanding with and without the bridle.

Exercises to Improve Your Timing and Release…while having fun Sunday w 1:00-1:55 w Coliseum Arena

This demo will make you laugh…and make you think. What does teaching a horse to bow have in common with teaching a horse to stand still for mounting? How does teaching a horse to lie down relate to teaching your horse to side passing to the mounting block for you? The results for all of these depend on where you release the pressure. This demo will explain the theory behind horse training and will give you exercises you can do at home with your horse to improve your communication as well as teach the bow, and teach your horse to pick you up from a mounting block.

These noble horses are also part of the Sons of the Wind Classical Dressage School and teach countless riders the upper level movements under Vitor's tutelage. During these performances the audience will witness the spectacular perfection of the “High School of Classical Horsemanship” with ground work including Work in Hand and on the Long Rein, as well as the spectacular "aires above the ground" which include the levade, courbette and capriole. These movements were historically used during mounted battles hundreds of years ago as a defense against the opponents. The performance concludes with the incredibly disciplined and thrilling choreography of the Quadrille which consists of four riders working in formation at the walk, trot and canter with half pass, lead changes, passage and canter pirouettes. The performance of the historic Portuguese Lusitanos and their riders in the traditional baroque costume show the intimate relationship between the noble war mount of times past and the horsemen and women of modern day. Audiences will enjoy some of the most moving and beautiful impressions for horse lovers and experience a glimpse of European equestrian culture.

The First Infantry Division (1ID) Commanding General’s Mounted Color Guard (CGMCG) is a ceremonial, active duty unit supporting 1ID, Fort Riley and the US Army in parades, ceremonies, and cavalry demonstrations. The CGMCG is one of only seven active equestrian units in the Army. The mission of the CGMCG is unique because Fort Riley was the home of the US Army Cavalry School. The CGMCG helps to continue the historic tradition of the mounted cavalry through demonstrations and community engagement activities. The CGMCG supports Fort Riley and 1ID with over 150 events each year throughout the country. 2017 is a significant year for the CGMCG because of its participation in events celebrating the First Infantry Division’s 100th birthday as it was the first division created in the Army to support WWI. The CGMCG will participate in the Chicago Memorial Day Parade, Sheridan Wyoming Rodeo Association Opening Ceremony and Parade, WWI Centennial Celebration at the WWI Museum, Regional and National Cavalry Competitions, and countless additional regional and local events from the elementary school through the collegiate level in 2017. The CGMCG has also successfully participated in four of the last five Presidential Inaugural Parades. The CGMCG is a distinctive mounted unit utilizing historically accurate 19th century equipment and uniforms. Light blue wool pants and navy wool coats are worn reflecting the appropriate ranks with yellow stripes and chevrons. The CGMCG wears cavalry hats, commonly referred to as Stetsons, and black leather riding boots. All horses in the CGMCG are bay colored mustangs or Quarter Horses with two notable exceptions: the Commander’s horse and the guidon bearer’s horse are off-color as per tradition. The feature which most distinguishes the CGMCG from other mounted units is the inclusion of an 1871 covered escort wagon in the formation. The wagon is an original, restored wagon that was used to bring rations and ammunition to resupply cavalry troopers on the battlefield in the western frontier.

Keith Isley

RODEO ENTERTAINER

Keith started his rodeo career in 1972 at the age of 15 competing in the junior rodeo division in the bareback riding and bull riding. He also tried his hand at bullfighting. It got to the point where he enjoyed the bullfighting (protecting the cowboys) more than the competition. That's more or less how his career as a contract performer began. Keith had no desire to tell jokes or perform clown acts. Being somewhat shy, he found the large audiences intimidating. However, after a period of time he found that the baggy pants and make-up that he wore provided him a comfort shield between himself and the spectators. Slowly but surely, he began telling jokes and performing clown acts. Isley travels with his equine companions Badger and Punkin. Badger is a 13-year-old palomino gelding who performs tricks at the rodeo. Punkin is a 28" miniature horse who is part of Isley's entourage. Isley is the most decorated rodeo entertainer with 19 awards from the PRCA. He won the triple crown of rodeo comedians back to back in 2010 and 2011 - The PRCA Comedy Act of the Year, Coors "Man in the Can" and PRCA Clown of the Year. Keith travels throughout the year to rodeos all over the U.S., Puerto Rico and Canada. His awards include: PRCA Comedy Act of the Year (2009-2011,2013) Coors "Man in the Can" (2006,2009-2012) PRCA "Clown of the Year" (2006-2011) Dodge Circuit Finals (2010) First Frontier Circuit Finals (2010) NFR "Barrel Man" (2009) PRCA "Specialty Act of the Year" (2006)

American Sugarbush Harlequin Draft Horse Oberon de Fermes Boisvert, the 2015 American Sugarbush Harlequin Draft Association stallion pictured below with his dam, is owned by Boisvert Farms and will be at the 2017 Minnesota Horse Expo representing his breed along with a yearling filly named Aeval de Fermes Boisvert. Please visit the horses and their owners while you’re here!

A little American Sugarbush Harlequin Draft history…. Their story actually starts way back in the 1970s when a young man named Michael Hanna (Muir) bought an Appaloosa stallion called Apache Double from Iola Hatley. He paid a record price for him, $100,000. Apache Double is the first and only Appaloosa to go over the $2 million mark in winnings of his get. He’s a great-grandson of Reigh Count who won the Kentucky Derby and a maternal grandson of ApHC Hall of Fame horse Apache. Along with breeding Appaloosa race horses at his Stonewall Stud Farm Michael Hanna took an interest in drafts and driving. He purchased Charlie Degas, the purebred Percheron stallion foaled in 1973, who became the foundation stallion of the Stonewall Studbook and an important influence in the development of the Stonewall Sporthorse. Michael bred Charlie Degas to a daughter of Apache Double called Stonewall Dottie West. Stonewall Baby Jane, a big bay leopard mare, was later bred to Stonewall Showmaster, another purebred Percheron Stallion and produced Stonewall Rascal who is the founding stallion of the Sugarbush Harlequin Draft breed.

choice, Percherons. In 1998, he saw an article about Michael Muir and his spotted team and contacted him. The two men discussed their goals and what each wanted in an elegant spotted driving horse and the Sugarbush Harlequin Draft Horse and Stonewall Sport Horse Registry was born. Everett bred his Percheron mare, Sugarbush Felina Del Noche to Stonewall Rascal and she produced Sugarbush Harley Quinne, a loud spotted black and white leopard. Harley, as he was known, was Everett’s ideal horse; a three-quarter draft with loud color, traceable pedigree and good conformation and temperament. Sugarbush Harley Quinne gained the Sugarbush Hitch Company a lot of attention and people started seeking out Sugarbushes! Spotted drafts were getting noticed and whether it was the heavier three-quarter draft Sugarbush or the lighter one-half draft Stonewall Sporthorses, both names had gone into the equestrian vernacular to denote LP marked heavy horses. Sadly, a twofold tragedy struck. Sugarbush Harley Quinne died leaving only one intact son, Sugarbush Harley’s Classic O. It was then that Everett discovered Stonewall Rascal had been sold and gelded, so he could not repeat the breeding that produced Harley Quinne. Everett was also facing health issues and after a discussion with Michael Muir, they decided to separate out the registry for each breed. The Stonewall Sporthorse Studbook is now in California and the American Sugarbush Harlequin Draft Association is now in Brookeneal, VA. In an effort to save the breed, a group of dedicated Sugarbush Harlequin draft lovers got together and with Everett Smith’s blessing they have rebuilt the breed using his original lines and making requirements for genetic testing, conformation and other factors.

SEE THEM IN STALLS 349-351 IN THE HORSE BARN Oberon de Ferme Boisvert, a 2015 American Sugarbush Harlequin Draft stallion

About this time Michael Hanna had some serious life changes. He changed his last name to Muir in honor of his grandfather’s name, because it was going to die out and he discovered he had MS. He sold his racehorses and started focusing more and more on driving. In an effort to bring awareness to MS, he decided to drive across America with his trio of Stonewall Sport Horse mares, Stonewall Stella, Stonewall Blanche and Stonewall Scarlett. They drove from California to Florida as a unicorn hitch. It was an amazing feat and showed how truly outstanding these spotted draft crosses are. Everett Smith also owned a carriage company and had taken up driving as a past time and part time job. His Sugarbush Hitch Company in Wildwood, Ohio was using his breed of 34 v 2017 Minnesota Horse Expo Official Program

Today, the American Sugarbush Harlequin Draft is a growing breed and gaining international notice. They are invited to appear at Breyerfest every year where they are a crowd and artist favorite. Articles covering the history of the breed have been featured in the Draft Horse Journal, on various websites and forums.

The Friesian horse originated in the Netherlands. It is an ancient breed that was once not well known outside of the Netherlands. The Friesian Blood Horse Registry was created for all horses that have no less than 25% Friesian Blood. The Friesian is a horse of many talents. Friday & Saturday w 9:30-10:25 w AgStar Arena Please join them for a sensory training and mounted police actions demonstration. They will demonstrate both how they teach their horses to remain calm in dangerous and/or scary situations and crowd control tactics. The Minnesota Sheriff’s Mounted Posse Association (MSMPA) was incorporated in 1967. MSMPA is a nonprofit organization composed of mounted posse units throughout the state. These units are made up of volunteers who assist their county sheriff in various duties, such as security at local events, search and rescue assistance, public relations, appearances at parades and other projects where the presence of mounted officers is beneficial. The MSMPA promotes education in the fields of law enforcement by offering scholarships to the youth of our membership and to the youth of employees of member county sheriff offices. Units of the MSMPA hold fundraisers for youth, scholarships and area charities, such as The Children's Hospitals and Clinics of Minnesota. They undergo training to assist as special deputies to the sheriff offices. Training may include CPR, basic First Aid, blood-borne pathogens, use of force and other training designed to help us be effective representatives of law enforcement.

This is what it looks like when mounted deputies are needing to escort an individual to a police officer/squad car. The two escorting riders have the person’s arms over the whither of the horse in a position that he cannot easily escape. Also, there is a leading rider in front and a rider behind. The individual is surrounded on all four sides for quick recapture should he be able to break away.

Training and experience are important for their equine partners as well. Many units plan sensory and use-of-force training exercises or attend sessions provided throughout the state. These exercises introduce their horses to some of the challenges that could be encountered while patrolling. Being able to stand calm in the noise and commotion of a crowd or carefully move one step sideways to avoid a baby stroller is vital. Training sessions attempt to emulate some of the things they may encounter so that their horses learn to look to their rider for guidance to get through the challenge versus taking flight!

Sometimes it can get hot in the saddle! In this training event, these horses are participating in securing the perimeter. This scenario could play out in riot situations or other events where the public needs to be kept away from dangerous or high security crime scenes.

Minnesota Horse Council Working for the Minnesota Horse Industry The Minnesota Horse Council, a non-profit organization, was founded in 1935 to provide assistance for horse owners and exhibitors to coordinate horse events with the Minnesota State Fair Board. Made up of volunteers, the MHC has evolved to recognizing and promoting Minnesota's growing equine community. Working together with the many equine organizations, the MHC shares a common goal of improving the horse industry throughout the state.

MINNESOTA HORSE EXPO The Minnesota Horse Expo is a non-profit subsidiary of the Minnesota Horse Council. It is made possible by the many people who volunteer their time and effort. Proceeds from the Expo are given to its sponsor, MHC, then reinvested in the Minnesota Horse Community. By attending the Expo, you are contributing to the future growth and development of the equine industry. Most of the money is given in the form of scholarships, grants, direct funding, disaster response, state horse trails and more.

SCHOLARSHIPS Tony Gasser, 1979 MHC Horseperson of the Year, was a well known Minnesota Horseman and active in the Minnesota Horse Council. In his will, he left money to start a fund to offer scholarships to students in equine-related fields. This was the beginning of the MHC/Tony Gasser Memorial Scholarships back in 1984. Five percent of the gross profits from the Minnesota Horse Expo are contributed to that fund each year. In the 30 years it has been operating, the fund has given over 100 scholarships to students from all over the state studying for professions ranging from veterinarians, veterinary technicians, equine biologists, equine facility managers, farriers, trainers, equine assisted therapists, and journalists. Congratulations to the 2016 Scholarship Recipients w Margo Cangemi, University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine w Kalley Christopherson, University of Wisconsin, River Falls w Angie Esselman, University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine w Cameron Gallenberg, University of Minnesota w Erin Halla, University of Minnesota

MINNESOTA HORSE COUNCIL AND ITS BOARD OF DIRECTORS The Council and its board try to help encourage communication and coordination between horse organizations and equine related businesses. Through the leadership of the Board of Directors, groups who are working on similar projects can be put in touch with each other; the MHC can help connect them with people who have past experience & advice on such projects; and can provide contacts to appropriate officials in state and local government. Each year, delegates representing the Minnesota Horse Council attend both the American Horse Council Annual Meeting in Washington, DC, and the States Horse Council Advisory Committee Meeting. These meetings are forums for participating states to share ideas and concerns affecting the America's Horse Industry. The Minnesota Horse Council maintains an active website at www.mnhorsecouncil.org. It includes current information about the council, issues that potentially affect the state's horse industry, and equine related educational materials. In addition you can find information about applying for scholarships, grants, or direct funding support. We invite you to stop by our booth at the main entrance to the Coliseum to learn about these programs when you are at the Minnesota Horse Expo. Join and encourage your friends to join the Minnesota Horse Council to become members.

2016 PIONEER AWARD - Lloyd Landkamer The Minnesota Horse Council started the Pioneer Award as a way to posthumously honor those who have been Pioneers in one way or another in the horse industry in Minnesota, those who have been leaders themselves and those who brought others to equine activities in the State. The Pioneer Award is given yearly by the Minnesota Horse Council to an outstanding Horseman recently deceased, who has made significant contributions to the horse industry. Lloyd Landkamer is our recipient for the year of 2016. Lloyd passed away Sept 25, 2015 after a long courageous battle with cancer. His marvelous sense of humor sustained him in spite of incredible pain and discomfort. He never played the ‘woe is me’ card. Instead, in the words of one of his close friends, Lloyd "pushed .himself to be better and work harder" Early on, Lloyd received degrees in Animal Husbandry, Computer Science and Economics. He worked in those fields but soon realized that his true calling was in the horse industry. Lloyd started his career as a show secretary and sport horse breeder. He became an icon in the dressage community, both on a National and then at the International level. His accomplishments are varied and numerous. He was widely respected due to his knowledge about many equestrian disciplines and breeds along with his experience in managing many horse shows. He was the popular manager of the dressage and para-dressage competition at the 2010 World Equestrian games in Lexington, KY. He was a ‘go-to’ leader in the sport of dressage, being an inspiration to all who knew him and worked with him. In addition to his love of horses and dogs, he was an avid reader, loved gardening and enjoyed cooking. Along with Bill, they proudly bred and raised nationally ranked horses. Recently, one of their home bred horses, Royal Gem, an Oldenburg Gelding, competed successfully under the guidance of Melissa Fladland at the Global Dressage Festival in Wellington, Florida.

Tributes to Lloyd’s accomplishments were reported in numerous horse publications including Eurodressage and Dressage Today. In reading over the comments on the internet, he certainly was loved, respected, and held in high regard by multitudes of friends and horse competitors in every conceivable area of the horse community. He is survived by his life partner of 32 years, Bill Solyntjes, and two younger brothers and a sister as well as the large dressage community who he considered his family. Bill, a US Dressage Federation (USDF) bronze, silver and gold medalist, will carry on the breeding of national acclaimed horses and training program at their beloved Brandywine Farm in Hamel, MN. Unfortunately, Bill was unable to be present at the Pioneer Award presentation on August 25th at the Minnesota State Fair’s Warner Coliseum during the evening horse show. Accepting in his place were Lisa and Rob Pliego. The award presentation was made by Judy Jensen, Tom Tweeten and Doug Persian from the Minnesota Horse Council. Our sincere condolences go out to Lloyd’s family and his countless friends. Our horse industry has lost a kind and good person. He will be missed by all who knew him. CERTIFIED STABLE PROGRAM The certified stable program was developed to encourage quality horse care in Minnesota. Its goal is to educate and improve the condition of horse facilities that choose to participate. When a stable applies for participation in the program, a MHC volunteer trained in the essentials of running a safe and sound horse business examines the stable. The examiner does not look for a deluxe facility or show-quality horses. As long as the MHC standards are maintained, the establishment may advertise as an approved stable. Membership as a certified stable is renewed annually. For more information about the benefits of becoming a certified stable, contact Sue McDonough, MHC Certified Stable Program at 651-699-8117 or the Minnesota Horse Council at 763-755-7729.

2016 HORSEPERSON OF THE YEAR - MARK WARD On Saturday, January 21, 2017 the Minnesota Horse Council announced their 2016 Horseper-son of the Year recipient. Criteria for the award includes: w Long term, serious commitment to equine activity in the Midwest. w May be professional or amateur. w Should have contributed in many areas, i.e., Western shows, English shows, 4-H, Little Britches and High School Rodeo, trails, legislation, clinics and other equine related activities. w Usually the individual will have been a horse owner for many years although it certainly is not a requirement. The person could have worked “behind the lines” to great achievement. w A mature individual, with “long term commitment.” w The individual should have excellent character. w The individual will likely be recognized by members of many horse-related groups and perhaps by the general population. The Minnesota Horse Council takes great pride in awarding this honor to Mark Ward. Former Horseperson of the Year recipient Dan Dolan was on hand to do the presentation and educate the crowd on a few lesser-known facts of what Mark has accomplished in his life. Mark grew up in Rochester, MN where he took lessons from Jack Brainerd at Diamond B Ranch. Jack was the ‘Who’s Who’ of horses back in those days. Mark showed in English, Western and jumping classes as well as joined Jack’s rodeos when he was a teen. He rode saddle broncs, bareback broncs and even the bulls. Mark completed a B.A. degree from Stanford in 1973, then became a TA and instructor while working on his graduate degree and PhD at the University of Minnesota. While writing his dissertation and teaching, Mark turned his attention to earning a living in the horse industry. In 1979, he bought a 22-acre property in Woodbury at 2700 Manning Avenue and named it Windy Ridge Ranch. He also bought his first horse Brutus that year and started teaching a fellow associate professor how to ride. In the 1980s, Mark added some buildings to the property including an arena so that he could give lessons year round. Today he has 50 horses and teaches over 200 students on a regular basis. Mark started the Windy Ridge Riders Horse Club as a member of the Western Saddle Club Association and a social riding club. He also started the Windy Ridge Riders Drill Team, which competed at the Minnesota State Fair from 1985 through 2014. They still compete at the Washington County Fair. He also started the Windy Ridge Riders Club Junior Equestrian Team for the Kids (JETS). 68 v 2017 Minnesota Horse Expo Official Program

The JETS performed at the Minnesota Horse Expo through 2006 and at the Minnesota State Fair through 2014. In addition, he started a Windy Ridge Riders Square Dance Team that also competed regularly at the Minnesota State Fair. In addition to these activities, Mark composed and recorded original music for both the drill team and JETS. He ran the Woodbury Days Celebration. He was President of the Minnesota Horse Expo for many years in the late ‘80’s to early ‘90s and under his guidance made the decision to move the event from the Minneapolis Convention Center to the Minnesota State Fairgrounds. The event has now grown from two buildings to over 12 buildings and close to 50,000 attendees. Mark co-hosted a radio show with ‘Calamity Jeanne’ Jeanne Ahrenholz who owned the saddle shop of the same name in Long Lake in the ‘70s and ‘80’s. He also raced his stallion at the Washington County Fair and competed in many other classes at the event. Mark used to bring 28 horses and riders to the St. Paul Winter Carnival each year, winning numerous awards up through 2013. His Windy Ridge Riders parade unit has also participated in the Woodbury Days Parade, the Afton Parade and the Oakdale Parade. He ran a summer camp for the Science Museum, provided Girl Scout rides and birthday parties. He also gave lesson to Special Olympic riders and hosted a show for them to compete. In 2004, Mark’s Windy Ridge Riders were the first drill team to compete wearing helmets. He also pushed for the 4-H kids to wear helmets back in the 1980s. It was not adopted across the country for nearly two decades. Mark was also the leader of the Valley Shamrocks 4-H club for over 20 years. More recently, Mark has served on the Board of Directors of both the Minnesota Horse Expo and Minnesota Horse Council. He created the Minnesota Horseman’s Directory, a

2016 HORSEPERSON OF THE YEAR - MARK WARD free website where local equine business can promote and advertise. He and his wife, Katie Clapp, still maintain the site on a volunteer basis. They also helped create the Minnesota Horse Council website and assist with the maintenance of that yet today. While serving as President of the Minnesota Horse Council, Mark spearheaded efforts to provide key input to the Minnesota Department of Revenue to create clear and fair guidelines for classifying properties which are homes to businesses involved in the keeping of

horses. His goal was to have the properties classified as agricultural and the tax laws were changed to agree with the MHC position. Mark Ward was joined by his wife Katie Clapp, along with several of his family and friends on Saturday night as he received the Minnesota Horse Council’s highest honor, Horseperson of the Year for 2016 at the Minnesota Horse Council’s Annual Meeting.

May 13, 1940 – February 9, 2017 Born: Metropolis, MO Died: North Branch, MN Our beautiful mother passed away. We can hardly realize what life will be like without her, who was the center of everything. Her suffering (from Alzheimer’s) has ended, yet our suffering (from shattered heart) has just begun. How do we tell you about the most important woman in our life, our hero…our Mom? For those of you who never got to meet our Mom….She was very lovely, affectionate and unselfish. Besides her family and close friends, she deeply loved her gardens, dogs (Dobermans) and especially our majestic Friesian horses. She was brilliantly clever, talented and had a wonderful head for business. Her passion for KFPS/FHANA registered Friesian horses led to the creation of Friesian Stable. Mom’s pride of her farm, gardens and horses extended to many visitors, including people passing along the highway. She would give tours of her perennial gardens, renovated 100+-year-old farmhouse and the finale was the custom-built horse barn full of Friesian horses. She enjoyed sharing her treasures with everyone. We wish you all could have met our Mom. We love you Mom – Becky Avalos, Leslie (Avalos) and Scott Losey, John and Carla Avalos, Jesse and Sheila Wentland Jr., four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Survived by husband Jesse Wentland, best friend Patricia (and Alvin) Tonn, many relatives and good friends. Preceded in death by parents Clyde and Elsie Bristol, sister Patricia Holmes and brother
