2 v 2019 North Dakota Horse Expo Official Program
Hey y’all! We share the roots of our existence with a very special animal, the Horse. As horse enthusiasts, our way of life is a celebration of tradition and culture. I thank you fellow horse lovers, for celebrating your love for equine culture by attending the first-ever North Dakota Horse Expo! The original idea to create this Expo was to raise funds for the North Dakota Boys and Girls Ranch equine-assisted therapy program in Minot, ND. As the Expo has grown in size and popularity, so has our hearts. Over half a dozen other non-profit horse related programs will benefit from your participation in the Expo! Please spend time some time to visit with all of our non-profit groups, as well vendors and educators! This Expo would not be possible without support from each and every attendee, volunteer and sponsor. I would like to thank everyone who was involved in this Expo, including you, the attendee of this event! Your participation in the Expo and it’s creation will ideally make a large annual event that generations can benefit from and enjoy for many years to come! As this is the inaugural year for the Expo, there are no doubt going to be bumps in the road. I kindly ask you to be considerate to the integrity of the Expo as well as its volunteers, participants or horses that may be involved. I am more than happy to answer your questions and assist you with any issues/concerns at the Main Entrance of the Expo. I plan to host this Expo annually and welcome any suggestions for improvement to make the Expo what you want it to be! I hope you have a great time celebrating your love for horses during the Expo! Rodney Yost Rodney Yost is a 4th generation South Dakota rancher who has been involved with ranching and horse customs his entire life. He's been horseback since he was a child on his family's ranch, started training ponies at the age of 10, and trained his first horse at the age of 13. Since then, he has become one of the top horse trainers and clinicians in South Dakota and throughout the Midwest. Over the past few years, Rodney has instructed horsemanship clinics and demonstrations for all ages and riding levels. His unique training style and sense of humor has made him a sought after horsemanship clinician throughout the United States and Canada. He is the first and only 5-time champion of the Crosswinds Ranch Colt Training Challenge and has won multiple Ranch Horse Colt Futurity competitions. He has become known for creating a relationship with his horses to produce extremely supple, well-mannered, and responsive horses that are capable of excelling in many disciplines. Over the years, a partnership with the ranching lifestyle has blossomed into a progressive mindset regarding his family-owned and operated Broadaxe Ranch, along with its expansive commercial cattle herd and American Quarter Horse breeding and training program. Rodney Yost Horsemanship naturally developed through many years of on-the-job learning and real life experiences of utilizing horses for everyday ranch work. For a horseman or horsewoman of any level to have the opportunity of an enjoyable, successful, and productive experience while horseback, Rodney believes it is clearly essential to have the correct tools and philosophy to enable all riders the ability to develop a horse that can pull the throttle back to sit, relax, and go slowly at times, while likewise having the ability to step down on the gas pedal when needed in the heat of the action. Horses that have the training, foundation, and ability to make that distinction easily rise to the top and become the cream of the crop in all disciplines. Rodney Yost Horsemanship demonstrations and Ride-Along clinics aim to demonstrate, teach, and enable everyone to have a variation of hypothetical tools, a common-sense training mindset, combined with the most elite training techniques. Rodney’s Schedule Intro to Colt Starting Demo Session 1 w Friday 9:00 w Round Pen w Introductions/Handshake - establish essential foundations, first physical contact Session 2 w Saturday 10:00 w Round Pen w Re-Introduction & Saddle Prep - ensure colt is mentally on-board, body control via halter contact and body position, belly rope technique, into to weight bearing, getting on with the bareback pad Session 3 w Saturday 5:00 w Round Pen w Review Saddle Prep & the First Saddling - proper pad and saddle selection and placement, safe saddling, first ride under saddle Session 4 w Sunday 10:00 w Round Pen w Review Saddling & Second Ride Under Saddle - pre-flight checklist, re-establish motion/impulsion as a priority, begin to advance body control, softness, flexion, connection to feet, leave the round pen Session 5 w Sunday 4:00 w Round Pen w Final Session/Third Ride Under Saddle - re-esetablish fundamentals on ground and in saddle, leave the round pebn, guiding, into to “The BUMP” technique, intro to the “ROCK THE BOAT” technique Colt Starting Clinic 1 on 1 with colt starting clinic participant and horse #1 w Friday 11:00 w Round Pen 1 on 1 with colt starting clinic participant and horse #2 w Friday 2:00 w Round Pen 1 on 1 with colt starting clinic participant and horse #3 w Friday 4:00 w Round Pen 1 on 1 with colt starting clinic participant and horse #4 w Friday 5:00 w Round Pen Session 2 w Saturday 12:00 w All Seasons Arena Session 3 w Saturday 7:00 w All Seasons Arena Session 4 w Sunday 12:00 w All Seasons Arena This clinic will only be open to four participants. Each rider will get a one on one session with Rodney in the round pen Friday, then three additional sessions in a group of four in an individual round pen in the All Seasons Arena. Green Horse Clinic Part 1 w Saturday 8:00 w NHSC Arena Part 2 w Saturday 1:30 w NHSC Arena Part 3 w Sunday 1:30 w NHSC Arena Rodney will assist four riders with their recently trained horses in gaining control of their horse’s movements by applying some of the techniques demonstrated in the colt starting clinic as well as some new aids in gaining softness, feel and control to build confidence in horse and rider. 10 v 2019 North Dakota Horse Expo Official Program

FRANK KUNTZ Frank Kuntz is a co-founder of the Nokota Horse Conservancy. Nokota® horses are descended from the last surviving population of wild horses in North Dakota. For at least a century, the horses inhabited the rugged Little Missouri badlands, located in the southwestern corner of the state. When Theodore Roosevelt National Park was created in the 1950s, some of the wild bands were fenced in, an accident that proved to have farreaching consequences. While the raising of federal fences provided the horses with a measure of protection, the National Park Service (NPS) does not allow wild or feral equines and is exempt from related protective legislation. Consequently, the park spent decades attempting to remove all of the horses. During the 1980s, Frank and Leo Kuntz began purchasing horses after National Park Service round-ups, named them “Nokotas,” and started to create a breed registry. OUTLAW FEED Friday w 12:30 w Lecture Hall Outlaw Feed Cold Milled Flax is a beneficial, nutrient-dense feed ingredient for all animals and an excellent source of the essential fatty acids (EFAs) provided by Omega-6 and Omega-3 fat. EFA’s are required for satisfactory health but are unable to be naturally produced by the animal and need to be added to the diet. Including these EFAs in your animal’s diet helps maintain a healthy skin and coat, support a strong immune system, maintain healthy joints and muscles, and promote healthy digestion. When used correctly, cold milled flax has shown a number of animal-specific benefits which can translate into healthier animals.
