2 v 2021 North Dakota Horse Expo Official Program
Hey Ya’ll, Welcome to the 2021 ND Horse Expo!! After the creation of the first North Dakota Horse Expo in 2019, I decided that this event was something that was in high demand and I could not be the sole host of this event. After I received help in 2019 from so many people, I cornered them all and convinced them to help me create a non-profit organization to host the Expo. With the help of my new board members, we pursued creation of the nonprofit and the North Dakota Equine Association (NDEA) was born! We aim to host the North Dakota Horse Expo annually and our mission is to educate the public about “Everything Equus” in North Dakota! We hope to become a central hub for North Dakota’s horse lovers by providing the following to the public: • A website for all to post free advertising for their horse-related; events, activities, jobs, items for sale and more! Check out everything we have going on at www.northdakotaequine.com. • A quarterly newsletter for news stories about equine-related activities and themes in North Dakota. The newsletter will be distributed free via email and posted on the website. If you would like to receive the newsletter via email, you can sign up as a member or fill out a newsletter request on our website. • Equine-related events, clinics, vendors and entertainment at our annual North Dakota Horse Expo and eventually other smaller events throughout the year! • Opportunities to become a member of the association and participate in the planning and production of horse events. • Grow the Association to eventually be capable of providing youth scholarships, direct funding, grant programs and more! Your NDEA Board Members include: President: Kaycee Wilen Vice President: Michael Matte Treasurer: Julie Peters Secretary: Tara Mehlhoff Directors: Darcy Sandstrom, Maria Borkowsi, Karen Thunshelle, Janel Mindt Marketing Coordinators: Amy Becker, Stephanie Sandstrom

Elsabe Hausauer Elsabe’s training is about building a relationship with your horse. The horse’s response to a human is a direct result of how we make that horse feel. Most of the time you don’t get people with horse problems but rather a horse with people problems. It is up to us to take responsibility to help the horse reach its full potential by being firm but fair yet gentle and kind. She went from growing up in South Africa, competing in horse shows, training race horses in England, and now living in the U.S. as a farmer and rancher. Horsemanship
Clinicians, Speakers & Demos is really no different than raising kids. Her horsemanship is not about her preaching to students, but rather letting the students feel comfortable, knowing that she is also in this journey with them learning and growing. Learning is a never-ending journey. She takes pride in her work and enjoys seeing students improve their relationships with their horses. Seeing people have major breakthroughs with their horses brings her joy--not just getting that horse to do fancy maneuvers, trusting them, or winning (although that makes her want to do a happy dance). More specifically allowing the horses to be the teacher and seeing people dig deeper within themselves to be kinder, responsible for their actions, humble, and establishing healthy boundaries with their horses. John Hovde John Hovde was raised on a ranch along the Missouri River near Williston. He learned how to train horses at an early age and started attending Ray Hunt clinics while living in Montana. After moving back to North Dakota with his family, he began teaching 4H clinics. After many years of 4H clinics he expanded cattle working and horsemanship clinics to the open public. Along with being an adjunct professor for NDSU, John is active in cutting events around North Dakota and the surrounding areas. John has been very
active in multiple equine organizations throughout the years and is a part in starting the North Dakota AQHA Trail Ride which continues to this day. In 2009 he was inducted into the North Dakota Cowboy Hall of Fame and in 2016 the NDQHA Hall of Fame. John would love to have some people, and their horses, spend some time with him working through whatever problems they may have with a feeling that when those horses left, their people would continue to treat and handle them with the best of horsemanship for the rest of their lives. John’s Schedule Problem Solving with Q&A Friday 4:00 pm w Lecture Theatre Saturday 9:00 am w Lecture Theatre Sunday 4:30 pm w Lecture Theatre Working Cow Flag Friday 8:30 pm w NHSC Equine Education Arena Saturday 8:30 pm w NHSC Equine Education Arena In the cow horse world many people use a mechanical “dummy” or “flag” to help teach a horse how to control a cow. The reasons are many. Slowing things up and having control of what the cow does is a major goal of working the flag. Horses need to work cattle to learn how to read them, stop and turn with them however cattle do not do exactly what you want them to do in a teaching situation. It has proven beneficial to use a flag or mechanical cow, which we have total control of, because we can slow things up and use repetition to teach a horse. The “dummy cow” is not only a great tool for cow horses but to help develop skills in horses of many different disciplines. It gives them a reason to go slow or speed up. It gives them a reason to stop, to load their hindquarters in preparation to turn and it gives them a reason to turn. Mentally it makes horses feel better because it helps them to understand what the human is trying to ask them to do. Clinicians, Speakers & Demos Ryan Rose
Shayla Smock
Ryan Rose began his career as a professional horse trainer and clinician in 2005. Ryan soon realized that in order to have success as a horse trainer and clinician, he needed to become a horseman. Ryan has studied with many top worldclass horsemen spending 4 years with Pat Parelli. Ryan now teaches workshops and clinics all over the world as well as running a comprehensive training program at his home in Wisconsin. Ryan’s passion is in creating partnerships between horses and their owners. His skills in horse development and his teaching set him apart. He also enjoys competing and training horses in ranch versatility.
Sponsored by Down Under Horsemanship-ND & Chad & Julie Mauch Shayla grew up participating in 4-H and FFA and went on to compete in high school and college rodeo where she ran barrels and poles and tied goats. She had plenty of experience starting colts. She had a weanling named Dinky who developed an attitude and became severely disrespectful towards humans—kicking, striking and biting them any chance she had. Shayla remembered watching a Clinton Anderson DVD series with barrel racing champion Sherry Cervi. Shayla saw that Clinton would be holding a tour in Des Moines and that he was looking for a trailer-loading demo horse. She submitted an application for Dinky to be considered and the bay mare was chosen for Clinton to work with during that 2012 tour. She told herself that if Clinton could get Dinky to load in the trailer, he’d make a believer out of her. “That mare drug him all over the arena and it took him a good hour and a half to get her craving to be on the trailer, but he did it, and I bought into the Method,” Shayla says. She went home and used the Method to train Dinky and her other horses. Less than a year later, in the spring of 2013, she participated in a Fundamentals Clinic at the ranch. “That´s when I got serious about the Method and decided I wanted to enroll in the Academy and become a clinician,” Shayla says. At that time, in order to enroll in the Academy, prospective students had to attend a Fundamentals Clinic and try out for the program. So in 2014, Shayla was back at the ranch to participate in a 10-day clinic. Shayla’s ability as a horseman impressed Clinton and she was accepted into the Academy.
