In 2009, she received the Utah Valley Chamber of Commerce “Woman Making a Difference” Award. In 2018, the First Lady was a recipient of the Utah National Guard Bronze Minuteman Award and the Federation of United Mexicans in Utah’s Tonáhuac Award. Herbert has served on the Governor’s Mansion Foundation Board and the Governor’s Artist Series Board and has also been involved with the Leadership to Keep Children Alcohol Free Foundation. RESIDENT ARTIST 2021 BRYON DRAPER
Springville resident and sculptor Bryon Draper has been selected to be honored as the 2021 Art City Days Resident Artist. Draper was born and raised in Cardston, Alberta, Canada. In 1990, he graduated with a bachelor of fine arts degree with an emphasis in three-dimensional art from Brigham Young University-Hawaii. While attending school there, he became interested in sculpture and ceramics. During Draper’s years of school in Hawaii, he worked as a lab assistant in the sculpture/ceramic studio and derived much satisfaction in helping students with their projects. It was during this time that he began to consider the possibility of teaching art on a college level. Following graduation, he returned to Canada where he met and married Cathenia Yawney in May of 1991. A year later, Draper was accepted into the master of fine arts program at Brigham Young University. After graduating in 1995 with an emphasis in sculpture, Draper and his wife returned to Canada. In 1999, he accepted a full-time faculty position at BYU where he
currently enjoys teaching sculpture as an associate professor of art. He also maintains a professional art career. Draper’s sculptures have been included in numerous national and international juried exhibitions and have received several awards. One of his sculptures is currently on display at the Springville Museum of Art as part of the museum’s 2021 Spring Salon exhibit. Draper and his wife have been residing in Springville for 22 years where they have raised their three children Breanne, Alexandra and Keaton. Draper creates his sculptures by attaching selected cast bronze figure fragments to cut blocks of stone. He introduces meaning through the use of pose, material and method of construction that speaks simultaneously of antiquity and the contemporary.
In doing this, he hopes to use past ideologies as a catalyst for considering issues that are currently relevant. He tries not to impose any particular interpretation on the viewer but rather develop layers or suggestions of possible readings. This leaves greater room for the viewer to intellectually develop personal meaning.

BUSINESS OF THE YEAR 2021 HOLT CPA
Just north of Hobble Creek on the northeast corner of Springville’s Main and Center streets, an office building stands on property that has been part of Kirk Holt’s family for generations. “My wife’s great-great-grandfather, when he came to Springville, he
settled on this very piece of property,” Holt said while sitting in the offices of HOLT CPA at 14 N. Main, Springville. Ira Sanford built a two-story adobe house on the property, unaware that the land would be part of his family’s activities for decades to come.
This is Kirk. Kirk is a super awesome CPA. He loves our community, and the community sure seems to love him back (btw, congrats to HOLT CPA on being the 2020 Business of the Year).
Kirk’s team magically handles the number stuff that keeps our businesses going.
If you own a business or file taxes . . . call Kirk. The Rest Of The Story Kirk Holt graduated from Brigham Young University in 1988 with a master’s degree in accounting, and earned his CPA license in the fall of 1990. Before venturing out on his own, Kirk worked 9 years for an Ogden Utah CPA firm. He then founded Holt CPA right here in Springville, in the fall of 1998, by purchasing the accounting and tax practice of Glade Binks. That’s nearly 23 years of local, expert service to folks just like you. Since that time, the firm has grown to include seven excellent employees that are dedicated to high standards of professionalism, integrity, dependability, and technology. Holt’s services range from individual and business income tax preparation to business financial statement preparation. Holt CPA also provides payroll processing, bookkeeping, QuickBooks support, accounting system setup, individual and business tax planning, and business consulting services. Their aim is to thoroughly understand and meet each client’s needs with personalized service.

Erik Busath, left, and Kirk Holt of HOLT CPA. Holt now operates HOLT CPA, his full-service accounting and tax preparation firm, on that same property. His father purchased it in November of 1981 and opened Art City Auto Supply. That business was sold in 2000 and the current building was built in 2003 to serve as the home of HOLT CPA. Now, in 2021, the Springville-Mapleton Chamber of Commerce has honored HOLT CPA with its Business of the Year Award. “We’ve steadily grown over the years. We have a busy atmosphere here. I think people like to come here because we hope to make them feel welcome and appreciated,” Holt said. “It’s important that our clients know that we know who they are. Each situation is unique and we work hard to get to know that situation.” HOLT CPA offers financial statement preparation, full accounting services and tax preparation for individuals and businesses. employees now make up the HOLT CPA team. Holt attended Brigham Young University, graduating in 1988 with a master’s degree in accounting. He earned his CPA license in the fall of 1990. A native of Payson, he moved to Ogden after college to work for a CPA firm in Ogden. After nine years away from the area where he grew up, Holt felt it was time to return home. When he learned that Glade Binks was selling his accounting practice in Springville, Holt decided to purchase it. HOLT CPA operated for five years at 144 N. Main in Springville before moving to its current location. Erik Busath joined the HOLT CPA team in 2008. “I think working with the people, that’s the funnest part of the job,” Busath said. “It’s rewarding when you help someone do something they can’t do themselves,” Holt added. Holt and Busath have been great supporters of the Springville-Mapleton Chamber of Commerce over the years. Holt has served as the chamber’s treasurer and president, and Busath is the chamber’s current treasurer, a position he’s held since 2012. The business is involved with the chamber’s golf tournament every year and has made donations to Springville High School athletics programs over the years. Holt said he feels blessed to do business in a location with ties to his ancestors. He enjoys its location next to Hobble Creek as well. During breaks from work, he can be found there fishing — and catching — brown trout.

The 97th annual Spring Salon, one of the longest-running art shows in the state of Utah, is now open at the Springville Museum of Art. The Spring Salon is a juried exhibition showcasing pieces by Utah artists from many backgrounds that were created using a variety of mediums. It will remain on exhibit through July 3 at the museum, located at 126 E. 400 South in Springville. The museum is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays and from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Wednesdays. The museum is closed Sundays, Mondays and holidays (except for special events). For more information about the Spring Salon or other events and exhibits at the museum, visit smofa.org. The Spring Salon was first held in 1922. It was begun by students and teachers at Springville High School who wanted to exhibit and promote original artwork. The salon has been held annually since that time except during World War II when fuel and other goods were rationed nationwide. The salon is open to all Utah artists working in any media. Each artist may submit up to two works of art created within the last three years. Works over three years old are not eligible. There were nearly 1,000 entries for this year’s salon, with only about 250 accepted for display. The entrants to the exhibit come from many backgrounds. There are many professional artists who enter their art for consideration, but many others are amateurs. There is a wide variety of art mediums including oil, acrylic and watercolor painting, traditional sculpture, mixed media and assemblage sculpture, photography and digital media. Overall, the exhibit showcases the

To register: visit springville.org/art-city-days/5K-run/ or register in person at the Springville Recreation office, 443 S. 200 East. Runners can then pick up their race packets and shirt June 2 through June 4 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. at the recreation office. Race packets will also be available on June 4 between 5 and 6:30 p.m. at the recreation office. To complete the run: Pick a course (any 3.1 mile route in the city that is fun and convenient for you). You can even go the distance on your treadmill! Walk, run or crawl the distance on your own, with your family, with a friend, or even with your dog. And, if you are having lots of fun, you can run/walk/crawl even further if you like. Next, take a picture wearing the Art City Days Run for Fun shirt. It can be a selfie of just you or a photo with your race buddies. Email the photo, along with your name and phone number, to artcitydays@springville.org to be entered to win some great prizes. Photos and names/numbers must be emailed by Sunday, June 6, before midnight to be entered into the prize drawing. All finishers’ names will be entered into a random drawing for prizes. The winners will be posted on the website on June 14. Prizes can be picked up the week after Art City Days starting on June 15 at the recreation office. A few running tips: A virtual race can be run (or walked) anytime and anywhere, even indoors on a treadmill. Young or old, fast or slow – we encourage participants of all ages and ability levels. We accept results on the honor system, so you can track your distance and time however you like. The most accurate way to do this is by using a Running GPS watch, but there are also several free smartphone apps available for iPhones and Android devices that you may be interested in. Thanks go to Intermountain Healthcare Spanish Fork Hospital, Nestle and Elevate Chiropractic and Wellness for sponsoring the race. 18 - SPRINGVILLE ART CITY DAYS 2021 - WWW.SPRINGVILLE.ORG/ART-CITY-DAYS

EYE SPY PHOTO CONTEST STARTING JUNE 7
How well do you know Springville? Those who think they’re familiar with every aspect of this community may have a chance of winning a Walmart gift card through the Art City Days Eye Spy Photo Contest. Photos will be posted online at www.springville.org/ art-city-days/eye-spy on Monday, June 7, at 9 a.m. of 20 different locations or objects in Springville. The catch is that only a very small portion of the location, object or sign will be shown. It’s then your job to figure out where each picture was taken and then take a bigger picture of the location or object. Once you have found all the locations and taken larger pictures of them, submit your answers to the Springville Recreation Office either in person or by email at artcitydays@springville.org. The recreation office is located at 443 S. 200 East. Get your entry in quickly! The first individual or group to submit all the correct answers will win a $50 Walmart gift card and a basket full of Springville Swag. In case of a tie, the person/group that submitted their entry first will be declared the winner. Visit www.springville.org/artcity-days for more information.

MEDALLION TREASURE HUNT JUNE 7 - JUNE 10 Springville residents will be challenged to become super sleuths and use clues to find a special hidden item as part of the Art City Days Medallion Treasure Hunt. Each day from Monday, June 7, through Thursday, June 10, at 9 a.m., a single clue will be revealed at www. springville.org/art-city-days/medallion that will lead searchers to a special Springville medallion hidden somewhere in the community. Each clue will be somewhat cryptic, so it will require deductive thinking to put each part together and find the medallion. In past years, the medallion has been found out in the open, but it also has been found inside a public building. There will be a message on the medallion giving specific instructions to the person or group that finds it, which could result in winning valuable prizes including a $50 Walmart gift card and a gift basket full of Springville Swag. After the four days of clues, a final clue may be released on Friday, June 7, if the medallion hasn’t been found by then. Only one person will know where the medallion is hidden, so peppering city employees with questions will do you no good. Be very specific in your search as you get closer to finding the medallion, but most of all, have fun!

The balloon glow event will be held on the field between the Clyde Recreation Center (717 S. 1200 West) and Meadow Brook Elementary School in Springville. The best time to see and experience the magic of the balloon glow will begin at dusk, approximately 9 p.m., and continue after dark. Admission is free.
ALL AGLOW FEST & FAMILY DANCE
In conjunction with the new Night Balloon Glow event, a free family street dance will be held in the parking lot of the Clyde Recreation Center on Friday, June 11, from 9 to 10:30 p.m. Meanwhile, inside the rec center from 8 p.m. until the center closes at 10 p.m., the All Aglow Festival will be held with glow sticks and lighted pools.

DUCT TAPE REGATTA SATURDAY, JUNE 12 Gather a team of friends, family or neighbors and head up to Wayne Bartholomew Family Park following the Grand Parade on Saturday, June 12, to participate in the Art City Days Duct Tape Regatta. This event will have teams building boats out of cardboard and duct tape and attempting to paddle around the pond at the park. Anyone can participate in this event, which will be conducted from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. at the park, located at 1090 S. 2900 East in Springville. Each team entering the regatta can have from two to 10 members. The teams will each receive a stack of cardboard and a roll of duct tape and then be given 30 minutes to build the most sea-worthy boat and paddle they can using those materials. One member of the team will then race the boat around a buoy in the middle of the pond. The first team to paddle around the buoy and back to shore without sinking will win. Those wishing to participate should go to www.springville.org/art-city-days/regatta/ and download the 2021 Release Form as well as the Team Information Form. All completed forms must be emailed to artcitydays@ springville.org or submitted in person at the Springville Recreation Office, 443 S. 200 East, by 4 p.m. on Friday, June 11. There will be enough materials available that day to accommodate a maximum of 35 teams. For late registration, bring all information directly to the regatta to be put on a list in case additional spots are available. Team captains will be responsible to have their teams gathered and ready at competition time and must make sure that each team member has completed the Release Form. Those without valid release forms will not be allowed to participate.
