PRESIDENT’S REPORT

Hello Members,

Time is flying and we are already in March of 2023. As this is the first publication for this year I hope you all had an enjoyable festive season and had a chance to catch up with your family and friends.

Our Clubs have been busy over the last few months as everyone was making use of the areas that were opened prior to Christmas. There were a lot of functions and events held over this time.

The “Tin Shed & VIP Lunch” was held on Friday 2nd December. This is very important to me and the Directors as we have the opportunity to catch up with the remaining Tin Shed Foundation Members and our Members who have supported our Clubs for over 50 years. Our Clubs would not be what they are today without early thinking by the Tin Shed Foundation Members and support from our members. We thank you all.

The annual Children’s Annual Christmas Party was held on Sunday 4th December at Workers Sports. Free tickets were given to members to use on rides, food, drinks and gift bags. This was a fun packed day with entertainment, Santa’s arrival in a Vintage truck and many attractions in the carnival area which is always a top favourite for all ages. The format was upgraded this time to allow parents and even grandparents to join in the fun. There were food and drink stalls and hot food available if anyone wished to purchase anything extra.

The proceeds from this allowed us to donate $15,000 to the Better Foundation for a Children’s Ward at Blacktown & Mt Druitt Hospitals. It was certainly a good day for everyone. We received so many great comments on this day so I must thank all our valuable staff for organising and delivering this fabulous day. To our Staff, Directors and Volunteers who worked on the day, thank you. It was a long, tiring day and your help was very appreciated.

We were delighted to officially open our $15M+ renovations at Workers Blacktown on Thursday 8th December. Thank you to Aunty Julie Jones for the Welcome to Country and a lively culture performance by local Aboriginal Dance Group. This new area is a welcome addition to our club.

We then followed with the launch of “Western Sydney Changing Diabetes”. We are working alongside Western Sydney Diabetes and a menu section of the new Blue Gum Café is inspired by the CSIRO. This affects our club members and community so again we are proud to be part of this venture. If you would like additional information, please contact the Club.

We have a very big year ahead of us with our Independent Living Units getting underway with a sales display suite being constructed in Campbell Street. We also have more new exciting things to put to our members as we move forward.

Thank you to Club CEO Morgan Stewart and his Management Team and staff for their ideas, patience, hard work and enthusiasm as we all work together for the best outcome for our Clubs.

This will be my last report before the elections for Board of Directors. Voting will be held at Blacktown Campbell Street and Sports Club and in accordance with the Club Constitution will be for three (3) days and our 2023 Annual General Meeting will be held 9.00am on Sunday 30th April at Workers Blacktown.

WORKERS LIFESTYLE GROUP 4

It is your opportunity as a member to vote for the people who you think are right for your Club to keep it moving forward. Please read all the nominations and make your choice. Thank you for voting and caring about your Clubs.

I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Melvin Gray on receiving the prestigious OAM Medal (Order of Australia) for services to the community and the Blacktown City Environmental Citizen of the Year Award. Both of these Awards were very much deserved.

To all our Sporting Bodies I thank all the Executive and Committee members for what they do to keep their groups running and be able to provide friendship and activities for your members to enjoy. It is a busy job and doesn’t go unnoticed and appreciated by the Board. Thank you for this.

My last engagement before I handed this report in was the “Opening of Grace’s Place” which was held on Thursday 2nd February. I was very grateful that the team at Grace’s place invited myself and the Board of Directors to attend this very important event. In September 2019 Terry O’Loughlin proudly held a shovel for the turning of the soil at Grace’s Place.

I was very proud to be there with our Directors for the Official Commencement of Operations to witness the positive outcome of this very important facility opening to children needing love, affection and special care after being affected by homicide.

Both the Homicide Victims Support Group and Grace’s Place have been the core of Worker’s community efforts for many years. It was a cause that touched everyone in the organisation from Directors to staff and members. Martha Jabour and her team have done an amazing job organising the construction of Grace’s Place. I congratulate them all.

On behalf of the Board and myself I pass on our deepest sympathy to all that have lost loved ones and friends since my last report. If you need someone to talk to, don’t forget we have our Welfare Team, Harold and Tina who may be able to assist you.

Until next time.

Take care and be kind to each other.

CEO’S REPORT

Welcome to 2023 and a new year of activity within your Clubs and our Community.

Our staff did another terrific job again over the very busy Christmas and New Year season. “Teamwork makes the dream work” as the saying goes and we remain thankful to them all for their service, diligence and commitment to you, our valued Members and Visitors.

Renovations were completed at Workers Blacktown, and we have begun experiencing strong levels of Members and visitors who are enjoying the Club and the newest offering, Blue Gum Café. Group Wide, visitation is increasing again and pleasingly we see our total number of Club Members pushing through 54,000.

Seasonal menus have commenced, and our range of meals, healthy choices, traditional Club favourites and new offers will adapt to new seasonal flavours, albeit along with a modest price increase for Members and Visitors reflecting the CPI, fuel levies and supplier price increases being passed onto the Club.

In January, Douglas Kirkham joined our Executive Management team reporting to me, with the mandate of serving our Team and Members as our Chief Operating Officer. Our Club group will benefit from his focus, humility and attention to the group wide operations of our Clubs, as he is a deeply experienced Club Manager. Welcome to the team Douglas.

Focus is now shifting over to Workers Sports and the Parkside Lifestyle Community Independent Living Unit Retirement Village development. Exploratory groundworks have commenced ahead of construction commencing in June 2023. Ahead of that commencement, a sales display suite is being constructed in Campbell Street. The suite is due to open in May to assist our future residents in their real estate journey.

We have lodged a development application relative to the front area of Workers Hubertus seeking to take advantage of the significant increases in traffic arising from the construction of the Nancy-Bird Walton Western Sydney Aerotropolis, to construct and operate a fuel service station incorporating a truck stop and amenities such as fast food outlets.

Our strategic goal is always to diversify and grow non-gaming related revenue streams. We will continue to provide new and valued services and products to our current and future members, and to proactively grow our financial position through pragmatic asset management.

Our end of financial year is upon us and Members should be well assured that your Clubs are in very good hands with an unaudited Operating Surplus of circa $4.4M. We have Cash and Equivalents of $15.5M and Net Assets exceeding $133M, which is strong position to be in.

Last year the Club invested circa $3M within our Community through the ClubGRANTS scheme and it is our pleasure to support a continued investment in local sport. We proudly support our community as we have done since 1955. We are good corporate citizens, who pay in excess of $12M in gaming taxes this year, as well as our many other obligations such as superannuation, payroll taxes, GST for example.

Gaming machines are our (along with the majority of the Club Industry) primary revenue source and is for the vast majority of our Members who play the pokies, a social or entertainment experience. We also accept that this is not the case for a very small percentage of Members and Visitors who may have a gambling problem. We are proactive and seek to identify and provide a gateway to resourceful and supportive experts to assist those Members wherever and whenever possible.

WORKERS LIFESTYLE
6
GROUP

I take this opportunity to highlight to you some of the tools and actions already in place across the Workers Lifestyle Group of Clubs:

1. The BetSafe Responsible Gambling Program provides a responsible gaming framework, venue, and multi-venue self-exclusions, third party/involuntary exclusions, online exclusion registers, ongoing staff training and free counselling service for patrons. The BetSafe program also includes mandatory compliance reporting and site audits, along with compliance for Anti-Money Laundering/Counter Terrorism Financing (AML/CTF), Electronic Gaming Machines, Keno and TAB services.

2. Voluntary Pre-Commitment (VPC) gives our members the ability to limit all or any of their time spent, turnover generated, or cash spent on an electronic gaming machine, and has been in place in all our venues since 2013 via the IGT Gaming System.

3. Third Party Exclusions and Involuntary Exclusions are already permissible through our Club Constitution and determined externally through BetSafe. An individual can be referred to BetSafe by the Club or Family for example, who then work to provide support and strategies to attempt to get the individual to act voluntarily. Failing this, BetSafe will enact a third-party exclusion, effected by the Club.

4. Advanced Responsible Gambling Training has been provided to the Club’s staff voluntarily for the past 2 years. This training provides a higher level of training to staff in identifying patrons showing indications of problematic gambling and empowers staff to have proactive discussions with patrons to assist in minimising harm caused by gambling.

5. Circle Scan is an electronic entry mechanism compliant to the requirements of the Registered Clubs Act which identifies patrons at the entry to our clubs who have self-excluded (from our venue/s or another venues). They can be detected at the front door, denied entry and provided a referral to BetSafe. These detections are made possible through a central database of self-excluded patrons, which is provided by BetSafe.

6. Card Based Gaming has been introduced into all our Clubs through the IGT gaming system. This system sees patrons utilise a Member or Visitor card collecting gaming machine winnings within our venues and records their information accordingly.

7. Workers Clubs have commenced the rollout of Facial Recognition technology. Once approved and activated, we anticipate that Facial Recognition will enhance our patron’s safety, security and harm minimisation measures. This technology allows us to use any image supplied to us under the Self Exclusion and Multi Venue Self Exclusion Programs to uphold our current legal obligation to detect and ensure that any self-excluded patron does not enter our venues. The existing temporary Member entry system currently does this manually when a visitor signs into Club and we scan the supplied photo ID.

We believe that we are responsible operators of lawful products such as gaming and liquor. We provide assistance to those in need where we can. We don’t claim to be perfect, nor are we naive to think that we can identify every person who has a gambling problem. But we are sincere, resourceful, proactive and committed to putting our members and visitors interests first and foremost. We are proud community members and corporate citizens. We will never put profit before people.

Finally, we are keeping a watching brief on the NSW political landscape, and collectively Clubs advocate for change to take place in consultation with us, not directed to us, as we do support a journey to a cashless gaming environment, but as an alternative to, not a replacement of using cash in our community.

Lastly, as always I pass on my condolences to those Members who have lost loved ones. Please take care of yourself and of each other. Your Club will be here to support you as best we can together, now and into the future.

I look forward to seeing you around our Clubs.

Sincerely,

BYSA: Social Sustainability in Action

Workers Lifestyle Group’s multi-year support of BYSA (Blacktown Youth Services Association) is an example of social sustainability in action. BYSA has been part of the Blacktown community since 1986. Yet, in 2020 when they met the Board of Directors of Workers Lifestyle Group, they were as close to permanently closing their doors as they had ever been.

The Board of Directors of Workers Lifestyle Group were introduced to BYSA in 2020 to assist with a simple funding of $4,000 to purchase food and hygiene pack to assist young people who were often in a situation that left no access to these essentials. It was during this meeting that the Board of Directors came to learn that BYSA currently had no government funding or any other significant support.

From that fateful meeting, the whole of organisation effort to raise funds for BYSA commenced. Workers Lifestyle Group holds a core value that we put people and community first. This was an organisation that had existed in the Blacktown community for many years, was there for our young people in need, and had goals around generational change – breaking the cycle of poverty, homelessness, and incarnation.

Within 18 months, funding support for BYSA had reached over $135,000 through grants from the Board of Directors through to major fundraising initiatives such as the Outdoor Cinema and CEO & Co sleep out, with the ultimate goal being to ensure that BYSA could continue to operate until that all important major funding partner was found.

The work with BYSA was on hold through 2022, while they focused on securing the much needed funding. Thanks to the funds raised by Workers Lifestyle Group, they were able to keep their managers employed while they developed their model. The positive outcome of all this effort from the Board of Directors, management and staff of Workers Lifestyle Group is that BYSA has secured funding by Ramsay Health and Packer Foundation.

The Board of Directors are very happy for BYSA and extend their thanks to all that helped make this tangible outcome a reality. Now we look forward to continuing working with BYSA as a valued partner with future funding opportunities and other ways to work together for our shared goals currently being explored.

Preventing the Cycle of Domestic and Family Violence

In 2021, Kay Kelly, President of Workers Lifestyle Group announced that it would contribute $500,000 over five years to fight Domestic & Family Violence. The pandemic brought about one of the highest spikes in domestic & family violence, with the Blacktown LGA being one of the worst regions.

The objective of the announcement was to create a capstone on a whole of organisation approach that involved everyone from the CEO to the front-line staff in creating awareness in the fight against Domestic & Family Violence. This would reignite the efforts made by the organisation previously when they were accredited White Ribbon Ambassadors, the first registered club in Australia to attain the White Ribbon Accreditation.

It has now been two years since Kay Kelly make the commitment for $500,000 over five years, and the community partners that have received funding from Workers Lifestyle Group include:

• Blacktown Women & Girls

• The WASH House

• Harman Foundation

• Top Blokes

• DV West

• Zonta Club

• Blacktown Police

• Youth In-Search

• Indian Crisis and Suppor t

• Learning Links

• BYSA (Blacktown Youth Services Association)

Whilst 2021 funding saw a focus on crisis support as the organisations on the front line worked to help those most in need, 2022 saw the focus move into the prevention space, with funds being direct to police and those working with youth to help break the cycle of violence.

Since the announcement of the $500,000 over five-year commitment, 11 local community groups have received funding to help realise their efforts on the front-line in the fight against domestic & family violence. These efforts combined already more than exceed $350,000. The renewed effort has also seen a growing awareness within the staff, members, and the wider Blacktown community.

Celebrating Art & Culture with a RAP

You may have noticed some interesting art being created around the venue at Workers Blacktown. Local artist Danielle R.G. has painted some masterpieces around the lifts in the carpark, and now if you travel to level 4 in the carpark lift (or take the stairs if you need to get those steps in), you can enter the club via the Parklane Airbridge (during the opening hours) and enter an immersive art experience.

Above your head is a mural that was created by local Darug artist, Leanne Mulgo Watson. The artwork includes words on the walls that tell the story of Blacktown as well as Leanne’s family story. The words describe the story of Gurangaddy, a giant eel and the lands and waters that were formed when Bulangaia, the quoll, chased Gurangaddy, a story that is elegantly depicted in the artwork above.

The location of the artwork in the Parklane Airbridge is fitting as it takes in the view of our original Blacktown Workers Club logo. Those with a keen eye will notice that through our recent rebranding, our new Workers Lifestyle Group logo and the Workers logo for each of the club maintain the original Blacktown Workers Club emblem from the 1960s. This was incredibly important to our Board of Directors, that we maintain our respect for the history of the club, as well as the history of the community of Blacktown. The emblem features an indigenous warrior, holding a spear in one hand and a boomerang in the other, with the warrior now on the carpark wall as well as being depicted in a statue in a nearby garden.

The origins of how the indigenous warrior came to be on a Workers Club logo has become an urban legend, with the story involving a real-life character in Blacktown in the early 50s, an area that had, and still does, large population of First Nations people. The legend goes that he was the first Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander to be allowed to join the club and was a regular guest at a time when First Nations people were banned from entering hospitality venues. Thus, the logo and a sculpture were created in his honour.

While Indigenous culture has always been a part of the DNA of the Blacktown Workers Club, the focus on celebrating now through arts and culture is one of the many objectives to have come out of the Board of Director’s strategic objective to create a RAP (Reconciliation Action Plan). The Reconciliation Action Plan will

COMMUNITY CORNER
The Nulungu Dreaming Dancers

soon be available for all to read via our Workers Lifestyle Group website.

The purpose of creating a RAP is to recognise and celebrate the history of Blacktown, to acknowledge the traditional owners of the land on which our clubs operate, the Darug people, and to ensure that we are actively working towards improving the lives of First Nations people in our community.

Since May 2021, and now at all major events, including the Children’s Charity Christmas Party in 2022, we invite an elder to do the Welcome to Country, while other speakers do an Acknowledgement to Country. We also do an Acknowledgement to Country at formal meetings.

In the completion of the renovation of the club at 55 Campbell Street, there were two Grand Opening Ceremonies held at different stages of completion. In addition to the elder conducting the Welcome to Country, we invited the Nulungu Dreaming Dancers to perform a blessing dance as our acknowledgement of the traditional owners of the land on which our club is built.

In addition to the art pieces already mentioned, we support the local Indigenous community through sponsorship of the Indigenous art prize at the Blacktown City Art Prize, and have done so for many years. Our administration area is decorated with legitimate Indigenous art from a local Darug artist, Leanne Watson. The collection features four artworks, and add to our collection of Indigenous art that commenced with our acquisition of artwork by well-known Blacktown treasure, Uncle Danny Eastwood that has been in our possession since the early 2000s.

We hope you enjoy the beautiful arts and culture that has been introduced at your club.

The Board of Directors, Morgan Stewart, Hugh McDermott. MP. and Nulungu Dreaming Dancers.

The Joy of Christmas Giving

Whenever Christmas time comes, the Board of Directors of Workers Lifestyle Group turn their attention to how they can brighten the Christmas of as many members as possible.

After two years of being unable to hold our biggest event on the calendar, thanks to Covid-19 pandemic, the Children’s Christmas Party returned, and it was bigger and better than ever! Due to the generous gifts from the Board of Directors through the two years previous, with the gift of a Zoo pass to those that registered, it was important to bring the Children’s Christmas Party back with a bang.

Held on Sunday 4th December, thousands of families attended Workers Sports so enjoy the festivities. This year, we invited everyone! Members could bring their children, or their grandchildren, or their nieces and nephews, and many were joining on the day.

Everyone enjoyed free rides, snacks and there might have been a sausage sandwich or two given our (kidding… there was actually around 5,000 thanks to Chef Steve and his crew). The Directors were there handing out gifts to the kiddies and no Christmas Party would be complete without a visit from Santa himself. We also had Bluey and Bingo join the all-day entertainment on stage.

The Board of Directors wanted to stretch the joy even further. They did this through a commitment to donate funds raised at the event to the Blacktown and Mt Druitt Hospitals via the Better Foundation. A $15,000 cheque was presented on the day.

COMMUNITY CORNER 22
The Board of Directors, Morgan Stewart, Stephen Bali. MP and Irene Ross Director Better Foundation.

The giving didn’t stop there… In what has now become a Workers Christmas tradition, the Board of Directors generously donated funds to allow the management and staff to stuff over 400 hampers for those less fortunate. The hampers were delivered to our friends at Meals on Wheels, who then ensure the hampers reach their deserving recipients.

Meals on Wheels at Blacktown relies on volunteers to deliver nutritionally balanced meals to the homes of frail aged people and people with a disability. The hampers allow them to also deliver a treat filled with Christmas goodies to enable them to have some special items at this time of year.

We also had our Christmas Giving Tree at Workers Blacktown. This year the presents were donated to our community partners on the front line of Domestic & Family Violence, Blacktown Women’s & Girls. The gifts that were donated by the Board, staff, and members, were delivered in the weeks prior to Christmas and would be gifted to families in crisis to help make their children’s Christmas much happier.

Western Sydney Changing Diabetes – a $500,000 Commitment

The Board of Directors at Workers Lifestyle Group has committed $500,000 over five years to implement the “Western Sydney Changing Diabetes” partnership. This highlights the Group’s commitment to encouraging a healthy lifestyle for the sake of the wellbeing of the entire community.

Workers Lifestyle Group is partnering with Western Sydney Diabetes (WSD), part of the Western Sydney Local Health District, and Novo Nordisk to deliver the program to the Blacktown community.

This commitment was announced via a launch event at Workers Blacktown on Thursday 8th December. At the event, Glen Maberly, Director of WSD, said people with diabetes have four times the risk of heart failure and twice the risk of heart attacks, strokes, and dementia. It is also the main cause of preventable blindness and a 20% increase in cancer, while one in three people with diabetes develop kidney disease and 2% will have amputations.

But we also have a great opportunity to reduce the incidence of diabetes and associated conditions, by improving our awareness and adjusting lifestyles. As explained at our launch event at Workers Blacktown, a weight reduction of just two kilograms can prevent 30% of people developing diabetes.

We also heard from one of our members at Workers Blacktown, Brenda Simms, who is no longer insulin dependent after embarking on a weight loss and fitness program a few years ago. Her story was inspirational.

The objectives of the Western Sydney Changing Diabetes program are:

• Create a whole of community approach

• Increasing awareness of diabetes and the risk of diabetes

• Creating awareness on the opportunities for early detection

• Creating awareness for prevention through lifestyle changes

• Reduce type 2 diabetes in the community of Blacktown where it is currently prevalent.

The Workers members are set to benefit the most as the program is rolled out within our clubs. Workers Blacktown is excited to be hosting a series of FREE healthy cooking demonstrations from Thursday, 23rd February. They will be held on the last Thursday of each month from 11am-12noon in the Mango Tango Thai.

Organised by WSD, these demonstrations are run by a nutritionist who will show you ways to prepare quick healthy delicious recipes that you can try at home. You will be given tips on nutrition and on how you may like to modify the recipes for even more variety. While a focus will be given to people with diabetes, these demonstrations are suitable for anyone interested in eating well.

Numbers are limited and bookings are essential. Book via Member Services or online at workerslifestylegroup. com.au

WSD’s Diabetes Detection Program has just started, which gives members a fingerprick blood test to detect your diabetes status or risk for diabetes along with information about diabetes and lifestyle choices that affect the likelihood of developing it. See the ad for more information.

Many of you would already have seen the SiSU Health Stations located at Workers Blacktown and Workers Sports. These stations are designed to give you a free health check in under 4 minutes.

The innovation SiSU Health Station will help you understand your health status in under four minutes. You can measure, track and improve your health with tests for diabetes risk, heart age, body composition and more. Simply take the Free Health Check at a SiSU Health Station, make some healthy changes, then take another Free Health Check to check your progress.

Other key activities and events include:

• More healthy interactive displays via our regular stalls in the Grand Walkway at Workers Blacktown

• CSIRO-inspired healthy menu options available right now at Blue Gum Café

Plus stay turned for many more healthy lifestyle activities and events to come.

Western Sydney Changing Diabetes – a $500,000 Commitment

Yorta Yorta man Dr Jimmy Little AO was an extraordinary entertainer and humanitarian. Jimmy and his musician manager Graham “Buzz “Bidstrup established Thumbs Up! to help bring a healthier future to our Indigenous population and the charity has now been in operation for over 12 years using music and new media to engage, entertain and educate.

The Good Tucker App was developed to assist shoppers to choose the healthiest food and drink options. With diabetes and chronic disease rates soaring, the App has been widely adopted in over 150 remote Indigenous communities across the top end of Australia. The Good Tucker App reads the product bar codes and displays a simple to understand thumbs rating. The App is free for both Android and IOS platforms and you can download it by scanning the QR code or going to www.thumbsup.org.au/good-tucker/

Thanks to sponsorship from pharmaceutical leader Novo Nordisk, this is the first time Thumbs Up! has actively promoted the Good Tucker App to people living in urban communities. The Western Sydney region is a diabetes and obesity hotspot. Supporting people to make healthy food choices helps them to take control of their health and wellbeing to lead a healthier lifestyle.

Thumbs Up! are also grateful for the support of the Workers Lifestyle Group and Western Sydney Diabetes in helping to get the message out to the community about using the Good Tucker App to make healthy food choices. Thumbs Up! is looking forwards to working closely with both organisations over the next six months and will take the learnings from this first urban project into future projects.

Look out for a series of free music and education events that Thumbs Up! and our friends will be staging to promote the Good Tucker App to both the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander and the wider Western Sydney community. Our goal is to help residents of the West select heathier food and drinks. The concerts covering several popular musical genres and will be held at the Workers Blacktown with dates announced soon.
