From the President’s Pen Indiana Holstein Association

Greetings Fellow Holstein Breeders, I trust you have made it through the Christmas blizzard cold blast. Rough couple days but we all survived. I may be premature and naive, but I like to believe spring has started to peek its head around the corner.

I will remind you we have a new Secretary/ Treasurer Shawn Zollman. I appreciate his being willing to serve and welcome the vision, and the thoughts and ideas he is bringing to the position and board.

If you missed it and I believe too many of you did, our Indiana State Holstein annual meeting was on January 21st at the Hamilton County Fairgrounds. It was nice to see everyone and a chance to regain our focus on state association activities. Your new association officers are as follows President Roger Hibschman, Vice President Doug Wicker, Secretary/ Treasurer Shawn Zolman, Executive Committee Member Jordon Eby, Executive Committee Chair and Past President Greg Peters.

Our juniors are trying to get geared up and field a junior and senior quiz bowl team at the National Convention in Kentucky. I wish them well and am super excited about all this energy. Rich Nisen is heading the virtual coaching duties with Denise Settles organizing the extra arrangements.

ROGER HIBSCHMAN President, Indiana Holstein Association 574-596-5823

Mark your calendars for the State Holstein Sale on April 29th at the Whitley County Fairgrounds at Columbia City. Micah Matlock, Gene Settles, Greg Peters, Doug Wicker, and Rich Nisen are the committee members and contact people for this special event.

State junior and senior Holstein Show is June 8th and June 10th respectively, also at Whitley County Fairgrounds. The fairgrounds will be open for tack to arrive on June 6th. Also on June 7th we will have the privilege of hosting the State FFA and 4-H judging contest. This is a cool thing as it puts us in contact with a great group of kids, parents, and schools. It also allows us to compensate financially as well. So please be generous and agreeable when asked if your cattle can be in the judging contest on the 7th. Any and all paid members are encouraged to attend and participate.

As we head into the 2023 calendar year, I am preparing a list of committees and looking to involve our State Holstein board members, association members, and Holstein enthusiasts on these committees. Many hands create better outcomes so be prepared to roll up your sleeves and dig in to share the load.

If you have any questions or concerns, I am always available.

Heifer pens have more granddaughters of Mallory in them, sired by bulls like Chrome, Big Gun, Choco Chip, & Joel to name a few.

WHAT IS THE MHA GOLDEN TICKET OPPORTUNITY?

It is an opportunity you do not want to miss! This is your chance to help us celebrate and promote the breeders in Michigan and their high-quality calves. Proceeds will benefit our junior and show programs.

Want to be involved?

MHA members can enter their Registered calves born 09/01/21-04/30/23. All breeds owned by paid MHA state members are eligible. State members can nominate a heifer using the form below. All entries must be received by May 1, 2023. A Nomination Fee of $25 covers GTO and All Michigan Show entry. Entries received before March 15, 2023 (deadline for spring show entries) are eligible to show in the 2023 spring show and recognized as a nominee. Owner is responsible for sending entry into office. When entering your calf, you are committing to the calf potentially being selected as the winner. Committee reserves the right to refuse any nomination.

There will be 125 lottery tickets printed, and 123 of them will be sold for $100 each. The remaining two tickets will be auctioned off to benefit the Michigan junior programs. This auction will be held at the Michigan Dairy Expo in July and the tickets auctioned off will automatically be in the top 12 drawing. When and where will the drawing be held?

The drawing will be held on July 23 at our 2023 All-MI AllBreed Summer Show prior to the selection of the Junior Champion. Ticket holders need not be present to win but do need to have a representative to choose a calf or a prize on their behalf. Ten tickets will be drawn on July 23 and those will be joined by the two tickets that were auctioned during the week of Michigan Dairy Expo. Eleven winners will go home with consolation prizes valued at no less than $100 and one lucky winner will be leaving with the calf of their choice. The owner of the selected calf will receive a check for $5,000 for that calf and the other calves will return home.

How can I get a ticket?

Tickets can be purchased from any MHA board member, online (credit card or PayPal) using link posted on our Facebook pages or by calling the office at810-614-4025 .

The Golden Ticket Opportunity nominees will be featured in the summer issue of the Michigan Dairy Cattle News.
