WEEK 9 READING: PERSPECTIVE AS SYMBOLIC FORM

Question 1: What are Durer’s rules for perspectival projection? (Maximum 100 words) He defined that only when there is a vanishing point in the middle of the image , the viewer will conceive that he or she is observing the scene through a “window” .The height is defined through the elevation and the width is defined by the plan . Durer states that “all perpendiculars ... meet at the ... central vanishing point” , all the parallels will be drawn to the same vanishing point .

Question 2: Describe homogenous space? (Maximum 100 words)

A homogenous space is consisted of points which can join together to form a “perspectival projection based on mathematical figures” . However, the homogenous space will not be existed if it is isolated outside a frame.

INVISIBLE CITY: City & Signs 2: Zirma

Key Ideas “The city is redundant: it repeats itself so that something will stick in the mind.”, “Memory is redundant: it repeats signs so that the city can begin to 19 exist.” “Travelers return from the city of Zirma with distinct memories: a blind.....a.... a... ” “Actually many of the blind ... many.. ”, “Repetition” “Madness and Crazyness”

QUAD PERSPECTIVE 1 + 2 Quad perspective view 1 : It is a scene from the perspective of Marco Polo when he entered the space full of abnormal people. This view is captured from a wide angle so that I can show those crazy people and what is going on in the scene and the scenery behind the columns , to show the depth and the perspective view. Connecting to the text , it is the first impression of Marco Polo

Quad perspective view 2: This is a scene captured from a point inside the quad . To show the perspective views and objects on the side of the quad .

PERSPECTIVE SCENE 1 + 2 Perspective scene 1 : This is the perspective of marco polo when he just stepped into the quad. As for the composition , I used the rule of thirds; the sailor without one eye is talking to no one but shouting out loud , indicating his abnormality. The man flying on the upper space is insane , the black man shouting on the ground is abnoromal , and the littlt boy comes from the outer world , his distorted face shows that he is very crazy , and he is intending to hit the black man . Those figures give a sense of craziness and madness of the city Zirma . When it comes to the textures, I applied the dark cloudy sky on the vaults to create an intense ambience, and i applied the bluestone texture on the ground, particularly paying attention to the lines on the ground to ensure they are all pointing to the vanishing point . I also applied the exaggerated graffiti on the columns to intensify the crazy environment . Lastly , I considered the meaning of the perspective that there should be a vanishing point on the medium of the image ;and the figures should be alligned on the middle line that I adjusted the scale of different figures according to the distance. Moreover, I thought about the content of the outer space , which is because of the intense and stressful life pace and pollutions from industries that makes people become abnormal gradually . Therefore, I chose the scenes containing broken , crowded and small houses and industries for the outer space. Perspective scene 2 : This is also a perspective from Marco Polo . I put the girl with puma on the left side of the image, there is a man riding on the flying machine behind her, which indicates that the city is abnormal compared to common daily life . The textures applying on the vaults and the roof are the same as the perspective scene 1 . As for the scenery for creating the perspective view, I chose many skyscrapers representing the high-intense working life , connecting to the scenery in perspective 1 , forming a logical relationship . The perspective 2 also has two vanishing points , one is on the left side and the other one is on the right side of the image , or further distance from Maco Polo’s perspective .

WEEK 4 READING: PRACTICE: ARCHITECTURE , TECHNIQUE AND REPRESENTATION .

Question 1: IWhat is the difference between autographic and allographic practice? (Maximum 100 words)

Autographic art form can only be created by the “direct contact of the author” , which means that if it is recreated by other people the result will be a distinct unique art work compared to the original piece . In comparison , allographic practice gives people a chance to interpret the art work using their own imagination by using conventional annotations .

Question 2: Why do architects need new representational techniques? (Maximum 100 words) Since the urban environment of cities is “no longer simply geographic” , it includes much more information including economics , culture and so on . Therefore, modern city is not simply constructed by traditional forms of notation , it has transfered to an “unmappable territary” . Consequently , architects are required to be equipped with the strategies to “intervene productivity in the city today”.
