Week One

Reading: Zeara Polo, A. 2010. Between Ideas and Matters.

According to Zeara-Polo, the diagram does not play a representational role in the design process but provides an organisational and can have a performative quality depending on how it is deployed. Explain how Diagram is different from Signs and Symbols? (100 words Maximum)

According to Peirce, “A symbol is a sign which refers to its dynamic object through a formal representation. Diagrams, as opposed to signs, symbols..., do not play a representational role for their dynamic object.” Signs and symbols are representations of existed norms or objects. For instance, the flag of a country functioning as a symbol represents the existed culture value and history behind it. Similarly, signs share resemblence to what they describe(e.g. people cannot swim in the area). On the contrary, diagram does not represent the dynamic objects, it is a mediating tool between “physical constructs and concepts on an organisational level”. Diagrams enable people to understand the concepts behind the dynamic objects, in this case, signs and symbols are relatively superficial compared to diagrams.

Week One

Precedent Analysis

Clockwise from left: 1. Set plan, section and elevation view; 2. Constructing the pavillion from bottom to top; 3. An aerial view of the pavillion

Modelling process: this pavillion is made from two pyramids laid back to back with three opennings. When modelling it, I used the plan, section and elevations to lock the intersections. Starting from the floor panels, I orient panels from bottom to top, accurate each panels, then put all these panels together and the pavillion is done.

Week Two

Reading: Hertzberger H. 2005. The in-between and The Habitable Space Between Things, from Lessons for Students in Architecture. Herzberger discusses how design should not be extreme in its functionality. Use your precedent study to explain how the pavilion allows for an appropriation of use. (100 words Maximum)

Konishi’s pop up Edinburgh gallery has executed the idea that design should be flexible and enables people to appropriate space in variable ways. The three opennings create some irregular spaces. The windiow pointing up is connected with two panels, this not only makes the window reach out so that people from inside can see outside views, but also creates a canopy for people to rest in shadows. The inclined panels enable people to lean on them as well. Inside the pavillion, the bench provides seat for people, and also can offer space for exhibitions.

Week Two

Isometric

Konishi Gaffney - Pop Up Cities:

The reason for choosing this isometric view is that it shows two thresholds and some irregular spaces as well. This perspective of the form addresses the function of the pavillion. I pulled the panels out to show the height and panels, in this case people can understand how the pavillion is built. When modelling the pavillion, I thought about the thickness and inside structure. Later I came out the conclusion that the thickness and inside structure are not that useful and nessesary for diagramming because what I want to focus on is how the form influences the functions rather than the structure itself. The difference of thresholds is addressed here that I use two colours to indicate different textures and thresholds. The key concept of the precedent study is materially and structurally efficient, eco-friendly and very easy to construct. The pavillion is re-usable as well because of the natural material and simplicity.
