It’s Bubble Tea time in Halifax BY KATIE INGRAM Move over Earl Grey, Matcha, Orange Pekoe and Rooibos, there’s a new tea experience in town and it’s is full of tapioca pearls. Chatime Atlantic, a bubble tea, smoothie and juice bar opened at 1480 Brenton Street in Halifax on April 9. Originally from Taiwan and owned by food company La Kaffa International, Chatime has more than 1,000 locations in 26 different countries, including Canada. However, its Brenton Street shop is the first location in the Atlantic provinces. “I always wanted to bring something from Asia to here because I feel that Canada is a country that is open to different types of cultures,” says Dave Lu, one of Chatime Atlantic’s owners.“I’ve seen Chatime have success in other Canadian cities, so I always believed this could succeed in Halifax.” Even though Lu and his business partners knew there was a market for Chatime in Atlantic Canada, they first needed to convince La Kaffa the area could sustain the franchise. There was a concern that since Halifax was smaller than other cities Chatime wouldn’t be successful. “It’s very hard because they have very strict requirements for opening
a new business in a new city,” says Lu. “I think this is the first time they’ve opened a store in a city as small as Halifax.” Before opening, La Kaffa makes sure the franchise owners know as much about their products as their staff do. Owners are required to travel to Taiwan to take part in a month-long training course. “They have a very high standard of requirement for owners to know the process of making the milk tea even if the aren’t involved in the operation of the business,” says Lu. From coming up with the idea to contacting La Kaffa and opening their doors in April, Chatime Atlantic has taken about a year of work, but it’s been worth it for everyone involved. Business has been steady since April, which Lu credits to it being the first Chatime in Atlantic Canada. “It’s something unique,” he says. “It’s something most people here haven’t experienced and there is a combined culture between east and west.” He also finds they’ve been successful because of Halifax’s younger population. “Here you have a lot of young students in university so they are open to trying new things,” says Lu. Even though Chatime Atlantic has just opened, Lu and the other owners are already thinking about ex-

panding their operations. “We plan to spread our stores to all of the Atlantic provinces,” says Lu, who adds they also want to open a few more stores in Halifax as well. It might be a while before this happens, but Lu is glad to see Chatime becoming both a part of the business and larger Halifax community.

日出茶太落户哈法 翻译:杨沁 伯爵茶、抹茶、橙黄白毫、路易波士 茶统统都是过去式。生活在哈法的我 们又多了一道茶饮新选择--以珍珠奶茶 扬名国际的Chatime日出茶太。 日出茶太大西洋店是一家专营各式奶 茶、冰沙、新鲜果茶的饮品吧，于今 年4月9日在哈法Brenton Street 1480 号盛大开张。日出茶太源于台湾，为 跨国餐饮集团六角国际事业股份有限 公司旗下品牌。其拥有1000多家门连 锁店，门市据点遍布26个国家和地 区，包括加拿大。本店是茶太在大西 洋省份的第一家。 “我一直都希望能把我所熟悉的亚洲 产品带到加拿大来，因为我认为加拿 大是一个多元且包容性强的国家。” 路先生是日出茶台大西洋店的经营者 之一，他跟我们分享道:“我看到了茶 太在加拿大其它城市的成功，所以我 相信它在哈利法克斯的发展前景。” 虽然路先生和他的商业伙伴们对茶太 在大西洋地区的市场前景充满信心， 但是因为哈利法克斯城市规模较小， 说服六角国际、证明加盟实力成了几 个合伙人创业初期最大的挑战。 “打开全新的市场相当不容易，特别 是在茶太总部有着非常严格的加盟条 件的情况下。”路先生接着说：“这 应该是他们第一次授权给哈法这样的 中小型的城市加盟。”
在加盟店开业前，六角国际要求所有 的加盟商深度了解并掌握他们的产品 以及生产流程。经营管理者需要飞往 台湾，接受长达一个月的专业培训。 “虽然经营者不需要亲自制作奶茶， 但总部要求每位经营者熟知奶茶的制 作工序。”路先生说。 从最开始联系六角国际，到四月份茶 太大西洋店正式开幕，期间经历了一 年的筹备时间。所有的等待和努力对 几位合伙人来说都是值得的。自四月 开店以来店内生意稳定，路先生表 示，茶太落户哈法顺应了广大海洋省 份客户的需求。 “我们的产品优质、不单调，可以说 非常有特色，”他说。“大多数本地 人都没尝试过奶茶。我们的饮品很好 地结合了中西方口味。” 他还认为，茶太目前在哈法较好的业 绩离不开这里庞大的年轻群体。 “这座城市生活着很多大学生，他们 愿意尝试新鲜事物、品尝新鲜口 味。”路先生说。 虽然茶太在大西洋的第一家店经营时 间不久，路先生和他的几位合伙人已 有扩张店面的计划。 “我们想让茶太遍布大西洋省份。” 路先生说，他们也有计划在哈法多开 几家连锁店。 虽然一切都需要时间，对于茶太能够 成为哈法日益壮大的商业社区的一部

悠悠茶舍:艺术与茶社的集合空间 翻译:杨沁 悠悠手做茶舍(Yu Yo The Artist’s Place)是哈法艺术生常常光顾的一家 网上艺术与工艺品供应商店。近期， 悠悠茶舍的线下实体店在市内开张了。 店内不仅仅销售艺术与工艺品，还建 立了一间茶室，提供特色茶饮和点 心，给客人们带来艺术与舌尖的双重 享受。 在过去四年里，夏禹和太太屈梦楠的车 库便是悠悠网店的货仓。凡客户在网店 下的定单，隔日早上，夏禹会亲自把货 品送到NSCAD（新斯科舍省艺术与设 计学院）校区。 他们的网店销售包括陶器、金属加工 及珠宝材料等货品，因为产品很有特 色而被顾客熟知。作为网店的经营 者，夏禹和屈梦楠二人都多才多艺--夏 禹在圣玛丽大学孔子学院教授中国书 画，太太屈梦楠是一名珠宝设计师。
“我们驾车50天，从拉斯维加斯到温 哥华，从黄石到纽约，游遍了北美， 去过不少城市。” 夏禹分享到。“我 们觉得新斯科舍省的人是最友好的。 我在北京长大，她在南京长大，都是 大城市。但是经历大城市后，我们有 些厌倦了那份拥挤和忙碌。我们非常 享受哈法这样的中小型城市。你的物 质生活不会太差，同时也可以享受美 丽悠闲的夏日和惬意的生活。” 夫妻二人还在店里开设了手工制作培训 班和课程，同时计划在店内展出当 地艺术家作品。他们希望这家店能成 为当地艺术家和手工艺爱好者的平 台，为他们提供一个交流、学习的空 间。 悠悠手做茶舍地址：1496 Lower Water Street。营业时间：周二至周六上午 8:30至晚8:30，周日上午11点至下午 6点。

Chinese couple opens art supply teahouse in Halifax BY HEIDI TATTRIE RUSHTON A popular local arts and crafts supply website has opened a storefront that doubles as a tea house and is pleasing both to palettes and palates alike. Operated out of Yu Xia and Mengnan Qu’s garage for the last four years, Yu Yo The Artist’s Place has been the go-to online site for many of Halifax’s art students. People would place their orders online and Xia would drop them off at NSCAD each morning. They’re known for having unique supplies in the areas of pottery, metalsmithing and jewelry-making tools and materials. Both are accomplished artists and craftspeople themselves. Qu is an artistic jewelry designer and Xia teaches Chinese painting and calligraphy at the Confucius Institute at Saint Mary’s University. Their love of art and tea is evident when one walks into their bright and airy shop in the downtown core. Neat rows of supplies, such as fair trade natural dyes and cotton, beautiful sketchbooks and rows of paints greet the customer, and several tables sit ready and waiting for visitors to settle in and enjoy a cup of one of the 44 varieties of fresh tea and a snack that was made on-site that morning by the couple. “Our clients kind of separate into two groups. One is the craft lover and one is the general tea lover,” Xia says. The couple sees it as a natural fit to combine art and tea. Traditional Chinese tea houses are places where people come to share ideas and talk shop. Despite only having been open a short time they are already seeing regulars and have had classes at NSCAD meet to do their final critiques in the shop. Xia claims that many craftspeople are also very good cooks and have refined palates. He and his wife take this to heart and spend time creating fresh food each day that is as beautiful as it is delicious. “Food is part of the craft,” he explains. “We are trying to make food with some creativity. Everything is about craft and art.” Some of the items on offer include caramel walnut clusters created with

caramel they make themselves, traditional Chinese breakfast biscuits with green onion and sesame and their version of a Japanese sweet treat called mochi that they use fresh fruit each day to make. Xia and Qu both grew up in China and moved west for school; Xia to New York, and Qu to NSCAD in Halifax. Eventually, Xia joined Qu in Halifax and they decided to settle here, but not until after a trip around North America. “We drove 50 days across two countries, from here to Las Vegas, up to Vancouver, to Yellowstone, then to New York City. We travelled a lot of cities,” Xia says. “We found the nicest people in Nova Scotia. I grew up in Beijing, a large city, and she grew up in Nanjing, also a large city, so we’re kind of tired of the traffic and the rush. We really like the medium size of Halifax. You can buy most things, you can enjoy the summer and it’s a very relaxed style of life.” They have already started offering workshops and classes in the shop, and plan to use the walls as a showcase for local artists. Ultimately they want their shop to be a platform for local artists and craftspeople seeking an inviting, welcoming spot to shop and spend time with others. Yu Yo The Artist’s Place shop and tea house is located at 1496 Lower Water Street in Halifax and is open Tuesday to Saturday from 8:30 a.m. until 8:30 p.m., and Sundays from 11 a.m. until 6 p.m.

华人社区新建协会,促进学术发展交流 翻译:杨沁 近期，新斯科舍省又多了两个促进华 人学术交流与发展的协会。 新斯科舍华人教育促进会(Nova Scotia Chinese Education Promotion Association ,即NSCEPA)成立于今年年 初，该协会为需要经济支持来完成学 业、取得相应成就的年轻人发放奖学 金。 该组织设定了一至一万五千加元的助
学金来支持有需要的中国学生。在踊 跃的捐款下，该助学基金能够每年持 续运作。 “协会想要帮助那些学业优秀，但在经 济上有困难的哈利法克斯的中国学 生。”NSCEPA会长杨力维先生说。 他告诉我们，协会现有七、八位成员 负责审核助学金申请者的资格。该协 会的成立取得了包括前任曼尼托巴省 省督李绍麟、现任下议院议长自由党 议员Geoff Regan等社区领导人的重视 和支持。

Chinese associations helping out academic life BY BEN COUSINS Two Chinese associations aimed at help the Chinese academic community have formed in the last year. The Canadian Academy of Chinese Professors – Atlantic Association and the Nova Scotia Chinese Education Promotion Association were founded to help the Chinese academic community to network and handle the challenges of their profession. The NSCEPA was founded earlier this year to provide funds to youth who
need financial help to achieve their academic and extracurricular success. The organization has set up an education fund of between 10 and 15 thousand dollars to help the Chinese students in need. Many of the donations to build the fund are renewable each year. “We’re trying to help Halifax’s community for Chinese students, if they have good marks in school and need some money if they’ve got problems,” said Eric Yeung, president of the NSCEPA. He said there are between seven and
eight members in his organization, they will be judging applications for their scholarships. The organization has some high-profile supporters as well, including former Lieutenant Governor of Manitoba and current Speaker of the House of Commons of Canada Geoff Regan. Yeung noticed a need for a new group to help the students in need. “A lot of Chinese associations help out in the community, but they don’t have an education fund for helping people if they have problems or need money.” NSCEPA is accepting its first applica-
tions until August, but last year gave out a $500 scholarship to a Chinese golfer in P.E.I. who really needed the money to continue his play. “We hadn’t started up yet, but they asked me to apply for a sponsorship for the money. Our group checked everything and thought he was really good for the money.” The scholarships will range from a couple hundred dollars, all the way up to $1,000. Right now, the organization is trying to help the Chinese com-

The CACPAA, founded in January, held their first keynote address this past April on the SMU campus. The organization was founded a group of Chinese professors in Nova Scotia to which allows Chinese professors from the Maritimes to better communicate and discuss the issues they face as a group. George Ye, chair of CACPAA and a Saint Mary's finance professor, said there are many challenges Chinese professors in the area face, including the different education system, how to teach in English and how to get research grants in Canada. The 30-professor organization also helps with networking. Ye says there

are roughly 60 or 70 Chinese professors in Atlantic Canada. “International education has become an important part of our society, our community and also for our economy,” he said. Their symposium, held in April, had more than 50 participants and spoke on various issues such as integrating Chinese students into Canadian academic programs and life, developing instructional strategies for cross-cultural engagement, and helping Chinese students to avoid plagiarism in English writing. “(Some professors) came to Canada as international students and we have some similar experiences and now we’re teaching Chinese students,” said Ye. “I think (the symposium) was very successful.” The group has also raised more than $2,000 for the wildfire victims in Fort McMurray. The CACPAA will have to take part in various other events throughout the year.

Helping a Home Become a Home BY KATIE INGRAM For many refugees who now call Nova Scotia home, their transition into a new community is made easier through community-minded programs and organizations. Within the past year, Nova Scotia has welcomed around 1,000 Syrian refugees, 700 which are government assisted and 300 that are sponsored by private groups. Once these refugees arrive, groups like the Immigrant Services Association of Nova Scotia [ISANS] are there to help. Gerry Mills, Director of Operations at ISANS says many of these newcomers often have trouble adapting to their new surroundings, as certain processes might be different than what they are used to. “It’s a huge change for the refugees,”
says Mills. “We want to make sure everyone knows how to navigate through the different systems.” ISANS helps newcomers with from everything from signing up for a library card and knowing where to buy groceries to opening a bank account. They also provide a link to other services such as advocacy programs, the school system and language classes. “There’s a lot of work that’s going on and for the first two weeks we meet with clients daily, but when they move into their new apartment we have a case management approach,” says Mills. “Once we take on this approach we have life school workers who will speak to clients in their first language and gradually build their independence and confidence.”

新省难民安置 翻译:杨沁 对于许多刚刚抵达新斯科舍省的难民而 言，融入全新的生活环境，离不开当地 社区的大力支持。 在过去的一年中，新斯科舍迎来了包括 700名政府资助、300名私人赞助的 1000名叙利亚难民。难民登陆后，新 斯科舍省移民服务协会 (ISANS)及类似 移民服务组织开始负责难民安置的问 题。 ISANS的运营总监Gerry Mills 女士表 示，大多数新难民会面临对新环境的适 应问题，因为这里与他们之前生活的环 境太不相同。 “移民新国家、新城市对难民来说是翻 天覆地的改变，”Mills谈到。“我 们要确保通过各种渠道为难民们提供 新生活的导航。” 从如何在图书馆借书卡登记，生活用品

ISANS helping refugees CONTINUED FROM PAGE 10 ISANS also works with other community organizations, services and government programs. With the arrival of the Syrian refugees, two programs Mills highlights are free bus and recreation passes for one year for those settling in the Halifax area. “They’re not just for Syrian refugees, they’re for all refugees and their not just for this year, they’re for the future,” she says. “We’ve seen institutions step up and say that’s what we’re going to do and the change we’re going to make because we can help.” Not only do these types of initiatives help out ISANS with their work, but they provide essential services to those newcomers who need it. In doing so, refugees are able to interact more easily with their neighbours and community. “They get out more because they don’t have to think about 'well, we have three children, that’s going to be expensive,’” she says. “They don’t have to think about that, so they can go to [places like] the market and Point Pleasant Park and not worry about it being a financial issue.” Mills also acknowledges the general public and private groups have done for Syrian refugees since the crisis began. Their help has been a key factor in making refugees feel safe and welcome. “This is the work we do so it’s not unusual for us, but communities have really stepped to the plate and are helping people and finding additional support for them,” says Mills. “People are not just being friendly; they are going out of their way to help.” For the rest of 2016, ISANS is expecting around 400 more Syrian refugees and 200 refugees from other countries to settle in Nova Scotia.

He and he, The Two Immortals BY QIANYI GAO Wedding season is here, and you’re lacking gift ideas for a newly married Chinese couple? Pictures or crafts of hehe er xian和合二仙, the two immortals or spirits, would just be the solution. He和 is the immortal of harmony and he合 is the immortal of union. The general symbolism is that of association with a happy marriage or union. It’s a very interesting phrase so let’s explore a bit more. The character he和 is a verb created for music, meaning to harmonize. These phrases will help you learn more about this character: yichang yihe 一唱一和 means ‘to echo each other’, yichang baihe一唱百和 (when one starts singing, all the others join in), and luanfeng heming 鸾凤和鸣 (two birds - luan and feng - harmonically sing together). Now that we under-
stand meanings of these phrases, it’s obvious that they can be metaphorical. For instance, yichang yihe一唱一和can be used to describe when meeting with general approval, and luanfeng heming 鸾凤和鸣 usually refers to happy couple with a blissful marriage. Chinese do not like extremes, and they use he 和 to express being neutral. This character fits the Doctrine of the Mean, the dominate philosophy in China. When referring to relationships among countries and governments, there are phrases such as xiehe wanbang 协和万邦 (all nations get along peacefully) and zhengtong renhe 政通人和 ( if the government functions well, its people will live in peace). So are relationships among people. Both Chinese and Japanese admire the he spirit, for example, during processing tea ceremonies. Now let’s talk about the other he合.
This word also has many different but inter-related meanings. It means ‘the same' ‘match’, and also ‘gather’ or ‘shut’. It expresses the relationship of two objects where the core relation is ‘to come close to each other’. There are zhitong daohe志同道合 — having a common goal, tianzuo zhihe天作之合-
a ‘heaven-made match’, and bainian haohe 百年好合- harmonious union lasting a hundred years. Early from ancient time, he 和 and he 合 are combined together to indicate a

有人要结婚了，你想送他们礼物，却 不知送啥好？如果结婚的人跟中国有 关系--有中国血统或者本人就是中国 人，你可以给他一个和合二仙的工艺 品。如果你用中文输入法打“h”和 “e”， “和”“合”这两个字多半会 出现在最初跳出的字列当中；如果你连 着打hehe，“和合”也会在最先出现 的那几个中。可是，究竟什么“和合” 呢？和合二仙的工艺品为什么适合做新 婚贺礼呢？ “和”原本是音乐术语, 意思是 “跟着 发声儿”。成语“一唱一和”、“一唱 百和”或者“鸾凤和鸣”中的“和”都 是这个意思，作动词用。由于“一唱百 和”转意为“一致同意”，因而“鸾凤 和鸣”也有 转 义，指“幸福的一对 儿”。 中国人传统上不喜欢极端，这正是 “和”所要表达的。中庸嘛。和，因而 也常常用在表述国与国之间，政府与民 众之间的关系。比如“万邦协和”、 “政通人和”。在形容人与人之间关系 的时候，“和”的思想超越了国界！比 如，在中国茶艺和日本茶道中，“和” 成了两个 茶文化的精髓。 再来说“合”。这个词可以表述多种意 义，但它们却都有内在联系。它可以 是“合一”、“合适”、“聚合”或 “合上”。这些不同的意义的共同特征 是，向对方靠近，所以有“志同道 合”、“天作之合”以及“百年好合” 的说法。 关于这两个词的读法。在汉语拼音中 he 的读音更像是英语的her,‘和’作 为动词时，读作去声，而作其他词性则 读作平声。另一个字，‘合’在方言里 和在 普通话里的发音是不一样的。 不过这个字在普通话里最终发展成和 “和”相同 的发音了。 这两个词不仅发音类似，他们在一起 还构成了“和合”这个词。和合是一个 长寿词，自古以来就用来指政府与人民 之间、家长与儿女之间、丈夫与妻子 之间的良好的关系。上述提到‘鸾凤和

英语，移民宝宝的第一个挑战 作者：Michelle 昨天有妈妈在问登陆前，是否有必要 让孩子去学英语，这位妈妈的孩子和我 女儿差不多年纪，4岁左右，无英文 基础。如果是几个月前，我会用戏谑 的口吻回答：学英文，搞错没吗，来 了加拿大要担心的是中文吧。小孩子 没问题的，适应能力强的很，过个半 年，他们的英文就比你们都好了。这 是我们最常听到的，老移民这么说， 不管是国内还是加拿大这边的老师也 都这么说，甚至随便在电梯间偶遇的 邻居，也是同样的说辞。 但事实真的如此吗？对于稚龄的孩 童，对于处于0-6岁敏感期的孩童，当 他们置身于一个完全陌生的环境，置 身于完全无法听懂无法沟通的语境 下，真的不用去关注他们所受到的冲 击和内心的感受吗？真的只需要把这 个过程完全交给自然磨合吗？此时此 刻，我的回答是否定的。
我女儿是今年1月4日正式开始一周五 天全职的加拿大幼儿园生活。在此之 前，我女儿在移民服务机构ISANS的 日托班呆过2周多。那两周对她而言不 管是情感上还是身体上都是巨大的挑 战，置身于完全陌生的环境，周围的 人说着她听不懂的话，有着和她不一 样的肤色和外形，她不敢在那边睡午 觉，每天都几乎要哭半小时以上。但 是因为她的年纪不足以让她可以清晰 的表达自己感受，所以我们也忽略 了，甚至理所当然的认为，小朋友去 陌生的环境就是会哭的。加上当时我 们自己本身也在调整在适应，甚至每 天也在遭遇和面对各种冲击，可以说 我们自己都有点自顾不暇，所以我们 完全忽略了设身处地的把自己想像成 小朋友去感受遭遇这一切。 进入正式的幼儿园后，她的情况有所 好转。每天有了固定的小朋友，固定 的老师，固定的作息时间，她的表现 一天比一天好，从最初的排斥去幼儿 园；到慢慢回家会告诉我们，我有一
个好朋友叫Fiona；再到回家问我们面 包英文怎么说，牛奶怎么说，再然后 慢慢能叫出班上每个小朋友的名字。 所以当她说我能听懂老师说的话时， 我们是没有半点怀疑的，我们甚至暗 暗得意小孩子学起来就是快。但是， 有天我们接她回家去早了一点，就站 在活动室边上等她。我看到老师对她 说: Vivian, hand me the box. 她拿起地 上 的玩具递给老师，老师摇头说 no， hand me the box。Box还被特意放慢 了速度，我看到她捡起稍微远一点的另 外一件玩具，朝老师跑过去，老师继 续摇头说 no, hand me the box. 这次老 师是一个字一个字的在说，并且指着地 上的盒子，Vivian终于理解了她的意 思。还有一次，我们送的有点晚了， 已经过了9点，进教室的时候，他们班 正准备出门散步，Vivian的一个同学对 她说：We’re going outside. 对于我女儿这类第一语言不是英文的 小移民，并没有专门的ESL老师去帮 助她学习英语，所以她每天都在猜或 者靠肢体语言去沟通，但是却没有一 个系统有效的方式来引导她。目前为 止，她的英语水平比我原来预计的要 差一些。这边幼儿园一般是不会配 ESL老师，小学和中学会有，但据我 所知，ESL老师不是一对一的。所 以，如果遇上比较敏感的小孩，在英 语的环境中，可能会出现比较强的反 抗，我有朋友的小孩在这边读1年级， 在最开始的2周新鲜感过去后，第三周 开始坚决不肯去上学，后来只能由家 长每天在学校陪着。 所以，我建议如果家里有6岁以下小朋 友的，条件允许的话，在登陆前尽量 给小朋友创造一个英语的环境，如果 在国内能上那种双语的幼儿园是最好 的，另外在家的时候，父母也尝试用 简单的英语和小朋友进行沟通，不要 怕他以后的中文会不行，那是以后才 需要担心的问题，现在请先让我们只 关注眼前。请记住，你登陆时遭受的 冲击有多大，孩子面对的挑战就有多 大甚至比你的还要多，因为他们还只 有那么小，小到无法去表达去诉说。
