New restaurant brings a taste of China to Halifax BY KATIE INGRAM A new downtown restaurant hopes to build on Halifax’s close-knit community by bringing people together, one hot pot at a time. “Halifax has a lot of different people, so we want people to come and share their culture,” says Chao Shi, co-owner of Wow Hot Pot. “We want to build a restaurant that’s like an invisible bridge and connects people together.” Owned by Shi, Meng Zhang and Chuo Fan, Wow Hot Pot is an all-you-can-eat, hot pot restaurant that opened at 5650 Spring Garden Road in June. A hot pot is a type of stew where a pot of simmering stock or soup is placed in the centre of a table and a variety of raw foods including lamb, beef and vegetables are placed all around it. These ingredients are then put into the pot and cooked directly at the table and when finished are usually eaten with a dipping sauce. The restaurant came about after Zhang
and Fan were looking to start a business after graduating university, but weren’t sure what kind they wanted. They consulted with Shi who also owns Happy Kids Indoor Playground in Bedford to brainstorm what Halifax needed. "Hot Pot is very popular in Vancouver and Toronto and bigger cities,” says Zhang. “We found there is no restaurant like this out here, [so] we wanted to bring something new to Halifax.” In order to make sure their restaurant appealed to people of all backgrounds and tastes, the trio modified their menu a bit. Traditional hot pots tend to be very spicy, so Wow Hot Pot uses a variety of spices and soups, depending on what the customer prefers. “We have two spices, a regular one, and a heavier one,” says Shi. “We also have a mushroom soup, a beef bone soup and a tomato soup because they’re less spicy.” When coming up with their menu, they also sure to be mindful of customers

who may have allergies to foods like wheat or nuts. In China, hot pot dishes are usually eaten during the colder months. Shi doesn’t think it will deter customers from coming to the restaurant, as Hali-
fax tends to get a lot of tourists in the spring and summer. “If they’ve never had hot pot before maybe they’ll come and try it,” he says.

Relaxation with a Golfthemed Twist BY KATIE INGRAM A new golf-based business is Bedford is hoping to become the “destination for relaxation” for Haligonians; regardless of whether or not they like golf. The business is Patrons Golf & Lounge, which opened in December at 27 Dellridge Lane in Bedford. Founded by members of the Maritime Chinese Golf Association, it features four golf simulators, two of which are in private rooms, a bar and restaurant area and a private meeting room. “We wanted to come up with a plan to start a business connected to golf, but had a new concept for Nova Scotia,” says Fan Yang, president and CEO of Patrons. “It’s not just a golf place, but we do have a golf background; it’s more for people to come in and have fun with their friends and family.” In taking this broad approach, Patrons is able to occupy a wide range of niches, ranging from a place to practice a golf swing to an after-work retreat. “We have customers who like to play golf and love this place because they can golf, drink and eat the same time,” says Yang. “We also have non-golfers who come in to just have a drink or to eat.” While the golf simulators are open year round Patrons adapts to fit seasonal needs. “In the winter time we focus on the simulators and the restaurant and in the summer time we switch our focus from golf to just the restaurant and bar,” says Yang. “The summertime is a slow time for the simulators because people want to be outside, [so] we’re also trying to promote the idea … that this is a place you can come to after
work or after dinner.” Along with being open to the public, Patrons serves as a headquarters of sorts for the Golf Association, which currently has about 100 members across the three maritime provinces. Since the sport isn’t popular in China, Yang says when newcomers come to Canada they don’t realize how enjoyable golf is and the impact it can have. “When you say you have experience with the Chinese Golf Association, it opens conversations [with potential employers] if they like playing golf because they are curious about what you do with the association,” he says. “Golf is a big sport locally, so if you play it can make you closer with your colleagues.” This is something Yang says the association would like to further emphasize through an establishment like Patrons. It’s designed to bring people together and is a place where they hold meetings and different recruitment programs. Currently, the association is planning a student program for the fall. “I came here as a university student; I know you have a lot of spare time and you don’t have a lot of activities to do,” says Yang. “It will help you grow your connections.” Even though Patrons is less than a year old, Yang would like to see it become a franchised business. Although right now, the focus is on making it a go-to place for those looking for an enjoyable meal, night out or meeting with colleagues and friends. “We have a slogan: we’re the number one destination for relaxation,” says Yang.

The 2016 Halifax Pop Explosion runs from Oct. 19-22 all across downtown Halifax. 2016
Halifax Pop Explosion takes over city in October, local talent centre stage ALLISON LAWLOR Considered one of Canada’s most respected festivals, the Halifax Pop Explosion promises to showcase not only new and emerging music this October, but edgy comedy and culture. “It takes over the city,” said James Boyle, the festival’s executive director. Running from Oct. 19-22, the festival takes place at 12 venues spread across downtown Halifax and the city’s North End. It offers not only music, but comedy shows and a zine fair. More than 20 years running, Boyle calls it an East Coast party that can’t be missed. “Festivals are a lot more than the core programming,” he said. “It’s a great way to meet people and be part of the community.” First held in the fall of 1993, the festiv-
al has always celebrated Halifax’s creative music scene. The term “Halifax Pop Explosion” was adopted in the 1990s, not only as the name of the festival, but as the name of Halifax’s entire alternative music scene, which at that time included popular bands such as Sloan and Thrush Hermit. “We always present the best music coming out of Halifax,” said Boyle. Century Egg is one of this year’s local performers generating a buzz with its unique sound created by mixing elements of traditional Chinese folk music with indie rock. One of Halifax’s newest indie-rock bands, Century Egg released Mountain God, a four-track EP of rock songs sung in both Mandarin and English, last April (2016). Led by Shane Keyu Song on vocals, she is joined by Nick Dourado on bass, Tri Le on drums and Robert Drisdelle on
guitar. A festival highlight this year is Mo Kenney, a singer-songwriter from Dartmouth. She will perform with Symphony Nova Scotia at the Rebecca Cohn Auditorium on Oct. 21.Festival goers can also enjoy other local performers like Alana Yorke, whose song Anthem reached number four on the CBC Radio 2 Top 20 chart last winter, and Walrus, a four-member band which claims to channel its inner psychedelia, with songs that range from trance to surf. Overall, the festival offers a mixture of music genres, and music you typically won’t hear daily on the radio. Of the more than 100 bands taking part in this year’s festival, 95 per cent of them are Canadian musicians. One of the great things about the festival is that you don’t have to come for
the entire time, you can catch a concert or two, said Boyle. Aside from music, the festival presents two comedy shows with local comedians and headliners Cameron Esposito and Kyle Kinane. Both shows take place at the Halifax Central Library’s Paul O’Regan Hall on the Friday and Saturday nights of the festival. The Halifax Central Library will also host a zine fair on Oct. 22. Lovers of zines, filled with everything from creative expressions to political ideas, will have the opportunity to browse through the locally-produced, selfpublished publications. “The festival is not just for people who love music,” said Boyle. “It’s about getting out and doing something fun in Halifax. It’s a great way to explore the city.”

Thanksgiving is more than giving thanks ALLISON LAWLOR Thanksgiving has evolved into one of the most cherished holiday weekends for Canadians. From its early beginnings close to 140 years ago as a religious feast to give thanks for a bountiful harvest. Canadian Thanksgiving, which falls on the second Monday in October -- this year on Oct. 10 -- is today, not only a time to celebrate the fall harvest, but everything we’re grateful for in our lives. It is also a time to enjoy a delicious turkey dinner with family and friends and celebrate nature’s beauty by spending time collecting colourful fall leaves, going for hikes, relaxing at the cottage, or apple and pumpkin picking at Nova Scotia farms. “A large part of our customer base comes from the city,” said Jim Lorraine, who owns RiverBreeze, a 40acre farm, just outside Truro, with his wife, Tricia. “To pick pumpkins out of a field is a very special thing for a lot of families.” Aside from a big pumpkin patch, RiverBreeze offers lots of Thanksgiving season fun, including wagon rides, an animal petting zoo, and a 12-acre corn maze for families. In late October, around Halloween, the farm’s fouracre haunted maze and haunted houses are particularly popular among those seeking to be scared.“There is a
lot of screaming going on,” said Lorraine. In North America, Thanksgiving traditions go back a long way. The first Thanksgiving was said to be in 1578 in the eastern Arctic. It was celebrated by Sir Martin Frobisher, an English explorer who completed three voyages to North America, first in search of the Northwest Passage. Canada’s first Thanksgiving Day was declared by Parliament in 1879 for “blessings of an abundant harvest”. But it wasn’t until 1957 that the Canadian government proclaimed: “A Day of General Thanksgiving to Almighty God for the bountiful harvest with which Canada has been blessed … to be observed on the second Monday in October.” That year, Canadians celebrated their first Thanksgiving Day as a statutory holiday. For many Canadians, Thanksgiving dinner marks the highlight of the holiday weekend. Families typically get together for a big meal that takes place either in the afternoon or evening of the Sunday, or Monday. Last year, a program called Share Thanksgiving helped more than 1,500 people in Nova Scotia to come together to share a meal over Thanksgiving weekend. Through their website (sharethanksgiving.engagenovascotia.ca), the program linked international students and families new to the

province, who were looking to make friends and learn about local customs, with families in Nova Scotia interested in hosting a Thanksgiving dinner in their home. The program runs again this year and organizers expect its popularity will increase with more people taking part. Another option for Thanksgiving dinner is to hit the road and skip the pre-
paration and clean up by celebrating with a meal prepared by chefs at one of the province’s larger hotels or resorts. Every year, White Point Beach Resort offers guests traditional Thanksgiving dinners, complete with turkey, stuffing, cranberry sauce, vegetables, and apple or pumpkin pie. “It’s all about creating memories and traditions,” said Lorraine.

Explaining the shape of Chinese characters BY QIANYI GAO Have you ever seen a Chinese learner using grids to practice Chinese characters? The grid is divided into four, and sometimes eight, by broken lines. Just like English learners use horizontal lines for practicing letters, the design of the grids for Chinese character beginners must have reasons. Today, let’s talk about the shape and the structures of the Chinese characters. A Chinese character is a bunch of strokes gathered in an invisible box.
The writing rule for the Latin letters is the same where 'K' shares the same space with 'L'. But unlike Latin letters, most Chinese characters have more than three strokes. Still, no matter how many strokes a character may consists of, the size of the invisible boxes are the same. For example, â€œćœ¨â€?(tree) is one character,â€œćž—â€?(woods) is also one character, not two.â€œç Ťâ€?(fire) is another Chinese character. But how about “炎â€?? Is it one character or two? One character can be a combination of
other characters called components. Much like a ‘w’ is combined with two ‘v’s, â€œćž—â€?is the combination of two â€œćœ¨â€?and “炎â€?(flame) is the combination of two â€œç Ťâ€?. The way of laying components for forming one character can be left-right, as for â€œćž—â€?, or top-below, as for “炎â€?ďźŒor even inside-outside, like â€œĺ›žâ€?(be back), where the two components for this character is “ĺ?Łâ€? (entrance).
example, â€œćŁŽâ€?(forest) is the combination of three â€œćœ¨â€?, and â€œĺ“ â€?(to taste) has three “ĺ?Łâ€?(mouth). It is interesting that the components,ćœ¨andĺ?Łin 棎andĺ“ , suggest the meanings of the two characters. But for some characters such as â€œčľ˘â€?(to win), the meaning of their components (亥 disappear, ĺ?Ł mouth, ćœˆ moon,č´? shell, 凥 normal) seem irrelevant to the meaning of the character. However, in most cases, a component would have
One character can even be a combination of more than two components. For

CONTINUED FROM PAGE 16 some connection with its formed character, which we will explain in our next topic. The formation of a character can be both left-right and upper-low if the character has three or more components. This is obvious in characters like "森" and "品” as mentioned above. To be visually stable, pyramid structure is usually the principle of laying the components for characters such as 品、森
and 赢. However, there are exceptions such as “梦”(dream).
our ancestors develop Chinese calligraphy.
The concept 'visually enjoyable' becomes a goal for an advanced writer. A character has no weight at all, yet the shape of a character makes readers feel a sense of weight or balance. Eventually writers need to pay attention to the balance of the characters. The intention to write visually appealing characters, as a result, had made
The reason for Chinese character learners of using grids to write becomes clear now. After practicing writing all the strokes inside visible boxes, learners will gradually manage to write them in an invisible box to prevent the strokes scattering away. Working sheets divide one box into four (called
tian-zi-ge) or eight(mi-zi-ge). This way, learners can correct stroke order and manage proper proportion, both of which are vital to produce visually appealing characters. In our next topic, we are going to explore more about the Chinese character legacy. We’ll discuss how learners can get used to, enjoy, and keep the passion of learning Chinese characters.
Chinese character working sheet helps learners write the characters correctly and beautifully.
