Thunderous drumbeats will sound in celebration of Canada 150 BY ALLISON LAWLOR Eric Yeung is counting down the days until the celebratory sound of thousands of drums being played simultaneously rings out across the country. “We will make some noise,” says Yeung, committee chairman of the Canada 150 Atlantic to Pacific Celebration. Yeung is one of the organizers of a national event that will unite thousands of drummers across the country on July 1 to celebrate Canada’s 150th anniversary. “It is coast to coast, east to west,” he says. “Everybody is so excited.” The Halifax drumming event is one of several being organized by Chinese communities in Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto, Winnipeg, Regina, Calgary and Vancouver. Organizers of the Canada 150 Atlantic to Pacific Celebration project hope to get more than 10,000 drummers playing simultaneously across the country to celebrate Canada’s diverse multiculturalism, and set a Guinness Book of World Records milestone. “We will all celebrate at the same time,” says Yeung. Yeung is hoping more than 1,000 people in Halifax will be drumming on drums big and small, from hand drums to steel drums to barrel drums. He’s bringing together not only drummers from the Chinese community, but the Korean, African, Indian and First Nations communities. If organizers nationwide can gather more than 10,000 drummers they have a chance at setting a Guinness world record, says Yeung. A group of young people in Hong Kong set a record in 2007 for the largest drum ensemble. In Halifax, the Canada Day event will take place at the Canadian Museum of Immigration at Pier 21. It is a fitting place, where more than one million immigrants arrived in Canada between
A press conference was held by the Canada 150 Atlantic to Pacific Celebration national committee on May 31 at Canadian Museum of Immigration at Pier 21 to announce about the nation-wide celebration.
1928 and 1971. “So many Canadian stories started here,” says Carrie-Ann Smith, Pier 21’s chief of audience engagement. “It is a perfect spot for Canadians to reflect on their history.” Canada Day celebrations will kick off at 10 a.m. when the museum holds its annual, official citizenship ceremony in partnership with Citizenship and Immigration Canada. The drumming event will be the day’s highlight. “It is certainly going to be fantastic,”
says Smith. “It is going to be loud.” Organizers have asked Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s office if he will play the first drum beat in Ottawa to kick off the national event. They’re still waiting for a response. They are also planning to livestream the event so Canadians across the country can see each other while drumming. For Canada’s 150th anniversary of Confederation it’s important to bring not only Chinese communities together, but all immigrant communities,
says Yeung. It’s a unique opportunity to reflect on what the country has given them. “We really enjoy our life in Canada,” he says. “The country has brought us joy.” With anniversaries only ever coming once, Yeung knows this year provides a unique opportunity. “We will never have a second time to celebrate 150 years,” he says. “We want to celebrate Canada 150 for everybody, for the whole country.”

DIY LOBSTER: Get cookin’ in Peggy’s Cove BY JACKIE CARMICHAEL Visitors and locals alike will be able to savour all the glories of a seaside do-ityourself lobster boil in scenic Peggy’s Cove this summer. Peter Richardson launches Lobster U-Cook in May. “We’ve never done it before. If it’s a big hit the first weekend, we might stay open weekdays,” he said. The entrepreneurial Richardson believes his operation will be a Nova Scotia first. “I’ve been wanting to do this since 1999,” he said. Now that he runs a B&B and tour business by the water in Peggy’s Cove, he has the space for it. The idea came from watching visitors walk by his B&B.
“What can I sell these people?” he wondered. His conclusion: a spinoff of what he has done on his tour boat for years, something he calls “down and dirty lobster.” Last fall he got a mobile fish vending licence and hired two Dalhousie students to sell smoked fish fillets — salmon and mackerel — to cruise line visitors. Diners select their lobster — either one pound or 1.5 pound — take the bands off, toss it in a numbered bait bag, and a dozen minutes later they can crack it open and chow down at barrels painted like navigation buoys. They can get as much help with the process as they want, and an expert will be on hand to teach them how to get the meat out of the tail.
“We got Nova Scotia Tourism on board — they think it’s a great idea,” he said. The real treat is everything patrons ever wanted to know about lobster. “I’m giving them education,” Richardson said.

The Buning Liu Chinese traditional instrument solo was held at the Government House on Barrington Street on March 14.
SMU student charms listeners with Chinese f lutes ALLISON LAWLOR Buning Liu has the power to transport listeners in Nova Scotia to the sacred mountains of China, with the sweet, mellow sounds that come from her flutes. Liu, a third-year business student at Saint Mary’s University, plays Chinese folklore music on seven different kinds of traditional Chinese wind instruments, including the cucurbit flute or hulusi, and the bamboo flute. Instruments which have been played in China for thousands of years. “It is always the soft music,” Liu said.
“It helps people to calm down and relax. It is like a magic power.” On March 14 at Government House in Halifax Liu had a solo performance, playing the instruments she has loved since she was 10 years old and started taking flute lessons in her birth city of Shangqiu in the Henan province of central China. “Since I was born my parents knew I loved music,” she said. She started out playing the keyboard but quickly gravitated toward the flute. At the encouragement of her friend Ziyang Wang, Liu applied to perform as part of the Lieutenant Governor’s Evenings at Government House pro-
gram. She chose to play traditional Chinese music, including Dance Music of Yao People, composed by Xiuwen Peng. Played on the cucurbit flute, the song depicts the people of the Yao ethnic group dancing joyously. She also played Spring to Xiang River, composed by Baosheng Ning. Played on the bamboo flute, the song speaks of the beautiful landscape along the Xiang River and the people who live there. The cucurbit, known for its hauntingly beautiful sounds, is a free-reed wind instrument from China. Held vertically, it has bamboo pipes which pass through a gourd wind chest. The
centre pipe has finger holes and the outer has, typically, drone pipes. It has a mellow, clarinet-like sound. In March, Liu also played her cucurbit and bamboos flutes for the Woodwind Repertoire Performance Class at the Fountain School of Performing Arts at Dalhousie University. She was asked to play by Patricia Creighton, the principal flautist with Symphony Nova Scotia and a flute instructor at Dalhousie. Liu is now learning to play the Western flute with Creighton. While she is a quick learner, Liu admits that learning to read Western music is difficult. But music is clearly

The ‘女(women)’ symbol and its related Chinese characters character 好 is able to carry the meaning “good” from the day it was created.
BY QIANYI GAO The first phrase a Mandarin student learns is probably ‘ni-hao’ (hello). This word is written in two Chinese characters, which mean “you” and “good.” The character for “good” contains a “women” component. Why a women component and not others? The ancient Chinese character for “women” 女(pronounced almost like “new”) was a drawing of a kidnapped woman. We can find it on the Oracle inscriptions. As women were the only “tool” to reproduce it’s not surprising that uncivilized people kidnapped them. The ancient Chinese character reflects this sad history: It resembles an image of a kidnapped woman on her knees with hands crossed. Despite the sad origin for the character 女, good things are also related to women and several of them are expressed with a women radical. Giving
Some positive meanings with a woman radical include 安(an), 媛(yuan), and娇 (jiao), to name a few. The structure for 安 is a woman under a roof, meaning peaceful or settled. Isn’t it very true that a female master is a must for a sweet family in a house? If the female master is a beautiful woman, then she is a 媛(yuan). 媛is a noun, meaning beautiful woman. Sometimes, a 媛 might also be sweet and charming, which we then say 娇(jiao).
birth to a new life is a blessing which is what the character ‘好 (hao, or good) expresses. This character consists of woman (the left part) and child (the right part), meaning giving birth to her child. And this is the answer to why the
The character 始 (shi or begin) also has a women radical. The explanation in the ancient dictionary for this word is obscure, but according to one of the studies the word originally means the experience of sex for the first time. Is it not an exact expression for getting started? The first step is to get a woman pregnant, then her belly gets big,
eventually she gives birth to a baby, and the baby’s new life begins. The character 她 (ta or her) is relatively a new one. As mentioned in the previous edition, combining basic symbols together became a productive method of creating new characters. The woman radical is a “convenient” symbol, and the combination of 女 and 也 made the personal pronoun 她 (ta) available. We know 女 is the “woman” radical, and the right part is a component for the sound for the character. This word was created to respond to the need of translating “her” into Chinese when China began to import Western literature. The woman and woman-related characters are keys to reveal some cultural aspects of human beings, which we’ll discuss more in the next edition.
