Dance helps build stronger ties between Canada and China ALLISON LAWLOR When dancer Tristan Debrowney stood on stage at Halifax’s Rebecca Cohn Auditorium on Nov. 9, he knew he was part of something unlike anything else. Debrowney, a former member of the Royal Winnipeg Ballet, was the only Canadian dancer and English speaker among the close to 40 Chinese dancers from the Wuxi Song and Dance Theatre, performing The Red Crowned Cranes. “It’s great to work with different people,” says Debrowney, who after touring The Red Crowned Cranes in Canada will go to the Ukraine to dance with the Lviv Opera and Ballet Theatre. “There are a lot of really beautiful dancers in the ballet.” Halifax was one of several Canadian stops for the international version of The Red Crowned Cranes, a dance drama that takes place in both China and Canada. The tour took the dancers from Edmonton to Charlottetown as part of the 2015-2016 China-Canada Year of People to People and Cultural Exchanges. It also marked the 46th anniversary of the establishment of official diplomatic relationship between the two countries. “During the past six months, 12 Chinese associations in Nova Scotia have been working closely in bringing this wonderful performance to Halifax,” says Michael Ruan, chair of the organizing committee. By working together, the associations gathered private sponsors to make the event possible, and rallied support from all levels of government, as well as the Chinese Embassy in Ottawa. “We are proud of the Chinese community in Nova Scotia,” says Ruan. “As I see in this event, they are work-

ing harder, getting better and becoming stronger.” Produced by both Chinese and Canadian artists, the dance tells the story of the relationship between red crowned cranes in China and the people who raise the beautiful, endangered birds. It also reflects on a harmonious coexistence of humans and nature, says Liu Zhongbao, director of the Wuxi Song and Dance Theatre. Based in Wuxi, an old city in the southern Jiangsu province of China, the dance troupe came to Halifax for the first time in 2012, but performed then with only Chinese dancers. “Through cultural exchange we can enhance the relationships between the two countries and the friendship, through dance and music,” says Zhongbao, in an interview through a translator. Jason Zhang, chairman of the Ottawa-based Canada-China Culture and Art Association, agrees. Since 2007, he’s been bringing Chinese dancers to Canada to perform. But in 2015, he got the idea of having Chinese and Canadian artists together in one show. Working with Peter Quanz, a Canadian choreographer and founder of Q Dance, and the Wuxi Song and Dance Theatre, he helped to develop the international version of The Red Crowned Cranes. Despite some initial challenges in the studio, due to language barriers, the dancers and choreographers soon began learning from each other. “Seeing how people work differently really helps you grow as an artist,” says Debrowney. “I’m always open to learning and trying new things.” Last year, when the show was performed for the first time in Wuxi, China, audiences loved it. “Dancing is a body language,” says Zhang. “People can understand the story.”

Unleashing your Inner Pop Star at Tusu Karaoke KATIE INGRAM A new Spring Garden Road business is inviting Haligonians to sing, or at least attempt to sing, their hearts out with friends. Located at 5680 Spring Garden Road, Tusu Karaoke opened on Sept. 20 in the space previously occupied by Natural Karaoke. Natural Karaoke closed in the spring. Jiapeng “J.P” Sun says he and his co-owners, Jianfeng “Calvin” Tu and Wenzheng “Jim” Zhang, all love karaoke and wanted to open a bar in Halifax. When they heard that Natural Karaoke was set to close, they took over the lease. “We’ve found that karaoke is getting more and more popular in North America,” says Sun. “More locals know about karaoke as another way to have fun on weekends and at night.” The trio are also glad they were able to find a place in the downtown area. “Our location is on Spring Garden Road which is a perfect location for people to have fun,” says Sun. “We did search a little bit for a good place, but this is defiantly our first choice and when we had the opportunity, we took it.” Tusu Karaoke has six karaoke rooms. The three larger ones can hold between 15 and 17 people. The two

To compete with other karaoke bars and nights in the city, like those at Bearly’s House of Blues and Ribs and The Lion’s Head Tavern, Sun, Tu and Zhang made sure they had the most up-to-date technology and an eclectic collection of songs. “We upgraded everything in here and brought in some newer technology, including the sound system and microphones,” says Sun. “People can download an app where they can order the songs and control the sys-

This idea of being continually updated extends to the bar and restaurant part of the business and well, with the menu changing every few months. “If people aren’t ordering something often, we’ll put something different on the menu, but if people like it, we will keep it,” says Sun. He and his partners would also like to update the dining area, which is now more of an intimate space, to a sports bar, but nothing is set yet. “We are still planning it, but we def-

initely have some options in mind,” he says. Sun says that those who frequented Natural Karaoke are glad to see that another, similar, business opened and have been impressed with the changes. “All of the people coming in right now, they say it’s totally different form from before; it’s a whole new experience,” he says. “People now know about us and have been pretty happy with our service, the food and our environment.” Tusu Karaoke is open Wednesday to Monday from 4:00 p.m. to 2:00 a.m. It’s closed on Tuesdays.

Tusu KTV

Program aims to keep international students in NS ALLISON LAWLOR Victoria Jin fell in love with Nova Scotia and wants to stay. Thanks to a new pilot program targeting international students - she has found a way she can. Jin, who was born in the Xinjiang province in western China, is in her final year of a master of business administration (MBA) program at Cape Breton University, and is one of 50 students taking part in the Stay in Nova Scotia – Student Retention to Residency pilot program which formally launched in October. “It is exactly designed for international students,” says Jin. “There is a lot of support for us.” The 50 students, both graduate and undergraduate, come from university and college campuses across the province. They are all in their last year of study, represent 23 different nationalities, and are studying everything from commerce and information technology to ocean sciences, says Wendy Luther, president and CEO of EduNova, an association of education and training providers in Nova Scotia, which manages the program. “We want to help more international students to stay in Nova Scotia after they graduate,” says Luther. Jin sees the program acting like a bridge between herself and fellow international students, potential employers and government agencies. The program also helps employers navigate how to hire an international student. “It’s not just about us,” says Jin. “It’s about advertising us [international students] to the whole community.” In Nova Scotia, there are about 10,000 international students, says Luther. But after graduation, the province only retains two or three per cent of them, she says. She is hopeful the pilot program will help Nova Scotia keep 10 per cent of them. “We’re been really good at attracting

international students, but we haven’t been as good at keeping them here,” says Luther. This fall, more than 150 students applied to be part of the pilot program, which is a collaborative initiative between the provincial and federal governments and the private sector. The students who applied identified that they would like to stay in the province, but needed some help to do that. “These are individuals who have embraced living in Nova Scotia,” says Luther. During the school year, they will attend a series of workshops including an introduction to mentorship, networking skills, immigration, and how job interviews are conducted in Nova Scotia. The program requires students make a six-hour commitment each month during the school year. Each student will also be paired with a mentor. In Nova Scotia, networking is often the first step in landing a job interview, says Luther. “You really have to know people to be introduced to opportunities,” she says. “We’re looking to create personal connections for the students. It really helps having that first introduction.” In the spring (2017) after the students have graduated, the program will subsidize their wages for four-months. The subsidy works out to about $6,000 per student for potential employers. The pilot program is free to students and there is no obligation for them to remain in Nova Scotia after they graduate. But Luther hopes 40 of the graduates will stay for at least one-year after graduation. She is also optimistic that several of them will become permanent residents in Canada within five years, and choose to remain in Nova Scotia. “I see big potential here,” says Jin. “In three years, I think there is going to be huge growth in Halifax and Nova Scotia.”

ness, educational exchange being the center of attention. Until 2014, 110,918 Chinese students have studied in Canada, whereas 3585 Canadian students in China. This is an upward trend for both countries, this data will continue to rise in the next few years. More Chinese students now choose Canada as their studying country. The

reasons may include higher education quality in Canada, diverse cultures, safe and stable social environment, and lower tuition. As international students, they face many challenges such as language barriers, differences of education systems, differences of culture back-

grounds and so on. In order to help students to better adapt oversea life, Minister Yang gave the following advice: studying language and practice it, understanding the difference of social and educational system, and participating in volunteer and community service programs.

The 人(person) symbol and its related Chinese characters BY QIANYIGAO In the last topic, we talked about the appearance of a Chinese character how it should look like, and how it’s organized if it’s composed of more than two parts. Today we are going to analyze a group of characters related to “person”. The original Chinese character ‘person' was a drawing of a man. We can find it on the Oracle inscriptions. It was not a frontal one, but a profile, with an arm stretching out. But why

was not an anterior view? Wouldn't that be more natural? The answer is that, the anterior drawing of a man had been used for a different expression ‘大’ which means ‘big’. Characters which created by drawings, such as ‘人’ and ‘大’ , are called pictograph. Words for classifying people were then created. We can imagine that at a time, the ancestors of the Chinese people figured a way of making new characters - combining basic symbols together. The personal pronoun 你 (You), is consisted of two parts. The left part is

person — a squeezed and turned ‘人’ called ‘the single person component’, and the right part is a symbol which means 'the second person'. The character 他 (He) has the same ‘person’ component. In other examples, the character 俊 is for ‘elite’, 伯 is for ‘father's elder brother’, 仇 is for ‘enemy’, and 佛 is for ‘buddha’, who was, for sure, a human being. As people move and act, some verbs have a ‘person’ component. The character 伏, which means bend over or lie prostrate, consists of ‘人person’ and ‘犬 dog’, where we can imagine of a

dog lying prostrate by a person. Another character 伐 ( chop, kill or punish), consists of a ‘person’ on the left, and a kind of weapon on the right. Characters created in this methodology are called associative compounds. However, only a small portion of the Chinese characters have stories like this. The majority were created in a way of adding a symbol which acts as the sound part. For example, in the characters 传 (pass or transfer),代 (do instead), 供 (provide), and 倦 (tired or be weary of), the right component is

人(person) symbol CONTINUED FROM PAGE 16 the pronunciation of the character. This group of characters is called the pictophonetic characters, and occupied the majority of the Chinese characters. Although the number of the characters

with the ‘person’ component might not be on the top list of all character categories, we can try to make a short story without using any other characters but the person characters. For example, once upon a time, a king is tired (倦)of being the monarch, and hand over(传) his crown (位) to his

The new king attacked(伐) his uncle (伯)’s enemy(仇) instead (代)。 The characters 仁 and 信 address the relationship among people. 仁 (ren, benevolence) is one of the essential concepts of Confucianism. As quoted in The Analects, “Fan Chi asked about Ren. The Master said it is loving people.” And in the Confucianism,

信(xin, faith or trust), is included in the famous Ren virtue. It is not hard to see that the Characters with person radical show some aspects of human being. They are with different roles, they act, and they admire love and faith. In the next few issues, we will continue to explore the Chinese characters based on their components.

Right。
