We Love Being in the World of Building and Construction Kent and Debbi Scharf loved being in the world of building and construction most of their lives. In 2006 Kent and Debbi created Scharf Building Services. At its core, it is a family-owned and operated company. After 14 years of building a business from the ground up and becoming highly successful, the time had come to bring in the next generation of the Scharf family to take over and take SBS to the next level. In January of 2020, AJ and Kristin Scharf became owners. AJ brings a wealth of knowledge after spending the last 20 years in management as well as hands-on learning from his dad about construction and Kristin is a retired Air Force Veteran of 20 years. Although two slightly different paths, one thing that will never change is their focus to ensure the customer that every job, no matter the size, is important and will be completed with the highest quality, and perfection, that has been the mission of SBS since the beginning. At SBS, we complete EVERY job as if it’s our own! AJ & Kristin Scharf, Owners

Shopping Options From McCullough's Flooring
Outlet Center And Shop-At-Home Services Lends A Hand To Customers During Stay-at-Home Orders
CARPET | TILE | HARDWOOD | LAMINATE | LUXURY VINYL PLANKS
W
hile consumers have been staying at home and social distancing has become a new way of life, a couple of trends in shopping has emerged: There are more do-it-yourselfers who have extra time on their hands and people shopping from home either online or with one person who comes to their home. McCullough's Flooring - now in business for 29 years - can accommodate both of these homeowners as well as offering the traditional full-service flooring company from purchase to installation to maintenance. The showroom is open and COVID-19 compliant.
Outlet Center
The Outlet Center offers same-day pickup cash and carry, financing options and free delivery up to 25 miles from their location in Belleville.
Shop-At-Home Services
What to expect. The sales consultant travels to the customer's home with handpicked samples from the showroom. The goal is to provide the best flooring information and tips at the Shop-At-Home experience. This convenient service, including a final estimate, is FREE! Of course the same professional installation with guaranteed warranty is part of the package.
When selecting products for the Shop-At-Home experience, consider these tips:
McCullough’s has an Outlet Center for those do-it-youselfers looking for in-stock products. The Outlet Center is jam-packed with name brand, quality products at discounted prices. “We have a large selection of carpet, ceramic, porcelain, luxury vinyl planks, sheet vinyl and laminate. Perfect for those DIY customers,” said Owner Russell McCullough. "Homeowners, designers, contractors and property managers are all welcome."
•
Why buy from the Outlet Center? If a customer is looking to purchase flooring and doesn’t want to wait for a custom order to come in, the Outlet Center is the answer. There is also a terrific assortment of tile for small backsplash projects and carpet remnants that can be made into inexpensive area rugs. "Indeed, we have a lot of DIY, house flippers and builders that utilize the Outlet Center on a regular basis, and they find it very helpful," McCullough said. "The nice thing about the Outlet Center is you receive the customer service you would expect from a small business, but the prices are comparable to the big box stores."
Shop-At-Home Services includes Belleville and the surrounding areas: O'Fallon, Collinsville, Troy, Maryville, Edwardsville, Glen Carbon and more!
• •
If there are pets, consider a vinyl plank that is easy to clean and is scratch resistant. When choosing carpet think about how resilient it needs to be and what kind of texture is desired. Wood comes either engineered or solid and is best determined by where it's going in the home and how it's used.
McCullough’s invites customers to look at projects and idea books on Houzz, Facebook and the range of products on www.mcculloughsflooring.com. Visit the showroom at 4400 N. Belt West in Belleville and call (618) 234-5005 for more information.

FIND NATURE IN YOUR BACKYARD WITH ENVIRONMENTAL WEBINAR SERIES
N
ature is closer than you think. From the entertainment of backyard squirrel gymnastics to indoor worms composting kitchen scraps, the University of Illinois Extension Everyday Environmental webinar series shows how everyone has access to the natural world. Starting in August, the Illinois Extension Energy and Environmental Stewardship team of educators will present a free, monthly webinar with researchbased information and tips to make small changes that have a positive impact on the environment. The five-part series will be the second Thursday of the month at 1 p.m. CDT. The program is free, and participants need to sign up in advance to receive login information. August 13, Solar Energy for the Home: As renewable energy production has grown in popularity, solar panels are now more accessible and affordable for homeowners. Energy and Environmental Stewardship Educator Erin Garrett will cover the basics of solar energy including what makes a home suitable for solar panels and options for homeowners. Of course August 13 has passed, but you may view this video to get caught up on the University of Illinois Extension’s YouTube page. September 10, Watershed Planning: Everyone who lives in Illinois has a stake in protecting its waterways. Extension Watershed Outreach Associates Haley Haverback-Gruber and Jennifer Jones will cover how watershed-based planning in Illinois uses a collaborative, grassroots approach to improve and protect the state’s water resources. Learn how Illinois conservationists work with communities on a local level to preserve their natural resources. October 8, Composting Do’s and Don’ts: Composting isn’t complicated, but following a few basic rules will help turn a pile of kitchen scraps and garden waste into a nutrient-rich organic material. Join Energy and Environmental Stewardship Educator Duane Friend to discuss the composting process, what goes into a compost pile and what should be left out, as well as basic management of air, moisture and temperature. November 12, Vermi-Composting: Odorless and indoor friendly, vermicomposting is one of the easiest ways to compost at home. Join Energy and Environmental Stewardship Educator Peggy Doty to learn how to harness the power of worms to turn leftovers into soil. December 10, All About Squirrels: Squirrels are a staple of backyards, college campuses, and, of course, forests, but how much do you really know about these mischievous rodent neighbors? Energy and Environmental Stewardship Educator Abigail Garofalo will delve into the ecology and life of squirrels to better understand one of the most commonly encountered wild animals in Illinois. For more information, contact webinar coordinator Erin Garrett at emedvecz@illinois.edu.

High Technology For Low Vision Patients Helps Many To Drive Again
or many patients with macular degeneration and other vision-related conditions, the loss of central visual detail also signals the end to one of the last bastion of independence: driving. A Mascoutah optometrist, Dr. Marianne McDaniel, is using miniaturized telescopes that are mounted in glasses to help people who have lost vision from macular degeneration and other eye conditions.
or pass the driver's vision test. Nine out of 10 people who have macular degeneration have the dry form. New research suggests vitamins can help. The British medical journal BMC Ophthalmology recently reported that 50 percent of patients treated with a high-dose combination of vitamins experienced improved vision after six months. While age is the most significant risk factor for developing the disease, heredity, smoking, cardiovascular disease and high blood pressure have also been identified as risk factors.
Some patients consider Dr. Marianne McDaniel the last stop for people who have vision loss, one of only a few doctors in the world who specializes in fitting bioptic telescopes to help those who have lost vision due to macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and other debilitating eye diseases.
Macular degeneration accounts for 90 percent of new legal blindness in the U.S. While there is currently no cure, promising research is being done on many fronts. "My job is to figure out everything and anything possible to keep a person functioning especially driving," said Dr. McDaniel.
Imagine a pair of glasses that can improve vision enough to actually change one's life. Low vision patients have probably not only imagined them, but have been searching for them. Bioptic telescopes may be the breakthrough in optical technology that will return the independence to whom once had it. Patients with vision in the 20/200 range can many times be improved to 20/50 or better. Macular degeneration is the leading cause of blindness and vision loss in people over 50. Despite this, most adults are not familiar with the condition. As many as 25 percent of those over the age of 50 have some degree of macular degeneration. The macula is only one small part of the retina; however, it is the most sensitive and gives us sharp central vision. When it degenerates, macular degeneration leaves a blind spot right in the center of vision, making it difficult or impossible to recognize faces, read a book,
"Bioptic telescopes can cost over $2,000," she said, "especially if we build them with an automatic sunglass. The major benefit of the bioptic telescope is that the lens automatically focuses on whatever you're looking at. It's like a self-focusing camera, but more precise." To learn more about the bioptic telescopes or to schedule a consultation, give the office of Dr. Marianne McDaniel a call at (618) 566-8899 and visit www.mascoutaheyecare.com. The office is located at 100 East Main Street in Mascoutah.

Back To School Important Reminder: 80% of a child’s learning is through vision • • • • •
Complains words move on the page or computer/tablet screen Short attention span Smart in everything but school Labeled ADD, ADHD, dyslexic Working below potential
Any one of the above symptoms is a sign that a vision exam from a developmental optometrist is needed to be scheduled. A developmental vision evaluation is needed to test all of the visual skills critical to reading and learning: eye movement control, focusing near to far, sustaining clear focus, eye teaming ability, depth perception, visual motor integration visual memory and visual perceptual skills. For more information on the critical link between vision and learning, Dr. Unger can be contacted at (618) 667-2020 or visit his web site at www.readingandvision.com
D
uring this unprecedented time of COVID-19, while learning may be taking place in our homes as well as our schools, it is important all teachers, educators and parents are reminded of the fact that “80% of a child’s learning is through their vision." Knowing this fact and knowing if a child is showing a lack of any visual skills is important for every child’s success in school no matter what that school setting may be. Unfortunately, passing vision screenings may leave parents and others with a false sense that everything is fine with a child’s vision. A vision screening may reveal that things are being seen clearly far away: but it does not guarantee that a child can see things up close. In order to read, children not only have to see the letters clearly both far and near, but they have to be able to move their eyes easily from left to right (tracking) and be able to see clearly for a long period of time. Therefore it is important to know the signs that a child maybe lacking in visual skills required for successful learning:
From STRUGGLING...To SUCCESS! 1 out of 4 children struggle with reading and learning because of undiagnosed vision problems.
Does Your Child... • Dislike reading? • Skip or reread lines? • Prefer to be read to? • Lose place when reading?
• Have trouble remembering what has been read? • Have difficulty paying attention? ADD/ADHD?
• Make numbers/letter reversals? • Have reading /homework take longer than it should?
ELIMINATE DOUBT! If your child has any of the above symptoms, he or she may have a 100%

For Your Health: Continuing to stay socially connected while physically distanced By Graham A. Colditz, Siteman Cancer Center
Everyone feels that time has been moving at a different pace during the coronavirus pandemic. A study published last month in the journal “PLOS ONE” found that most respondents to a questionnaire reported experiencing a distorted sense of time during lockdown. For some, days and weeks seemed to pass more quickly than normal. For others, more slowly.
Tired of video calls? Try group message chats and phone calls. Maybe even send a handwritten note in the mail. For something more cutting-edge, host a movie night, where friends can individually stream the same movie and chat about it in real time. New options to stay connected launch regularly. Explore what’s available, and keep things fun and engaging.
One factor that was linked to perception of time was participants’ satisfaction with their levels of social connection. Those who reported being more satisfied with their social interactions felt time moved faster during lockdown. Those who reported being more dissatisfied felt time moved slower.
Make it a priority – Of course, even with the latest technology, it can be easy to let social connections slide. That’s only natural when normal routines have been upended, and for such a long time. If staying connected is important, one way to make it happen is to schedule it. Set up regular times to connect with people. Maybe Sunday night is the time to call the family. Tuesday evening play online trivia with co-workers. And Friday night you have a long video chat night with close friends. When it’s planned for a specific day and time, and someone is expecting to get together, people are less likely to skip.
This is one example of how social connections may affect experiences during this prolonged disruption to our daily lives. And while it’s too early to know for certain how the pandemic has influenced the long-term mental and emotional health of people, it is known that – outbreak or not – most people generally do better when they have regular social connections and social support. Humans are social animals, after all. So, as the pandemic continues to stretch on and physical distancing, work from home and other stay-safer guidelines remain in place for many parts of the country, it can be important that people also keep working to stay socially connected – safely. Below are suggestions for staying in touch with family and friends. Keep it virtual – The safest way to socialize remains virtual, connecting through phones and computers. That can be frustrating to read, but it’s likely to be especially important as the weather turns cold and more time is spent indoors, where the virus is known to spread much more easily. Try something different – While it’s hard to replace in-person connections, one way to make virtual socializing more appealing is to mix things up.
These are difficult times for many people, for many different reasons. And mental health can take a particular hit from extended periods of social isolation and loneliness. If you need help, reach out to a health-care provider, or visit the National Alliance for Mental Illness (nami.org) for resources. If you ever feel you’re in crisis, call 911 and the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline (1-800-273-8255) immediately. We’ll get through this – together. Dr. Graham A. Colditz, associate director of prevention and control at Siteman Cancer Center at Barnes-Jewish Hospital and Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, is an internationally recognized leader in cancer prevention. As an epidemiologist and public health expert, he has a long-standing interest in the preventable causes of chronic disease. Colditz has a medical degree from The University of Queensland and a master’s and doctoral degrees in public health from Harvard University’s T.H. Chan School of Public Health.

6 Reasons To Get A Canine Companion When You Hit 50 Lashley Animal Hospital And Studies In "The Journal of Physical Activity And Health" Discuss The Benefits Of A Pet
I
f your nest is empty - by circumstance or by choice - think about getting a dog. Known for their devotion and happy dances, dogs can take a big bite out of isolation. Just hanging out with a furry friend has a revitalizing effect. Here are six benefits of later-life dog ownership.
Dogs Keep You Fit
Adopt a dog and ditch that pricey personal trainer. One particular study in the journal, published in 2009, found that dog owners walk approximately one hour longer per day than those without a fetching friend in their lives.
Dogs Make You Healthier
Another journal study published in 2016 also showed that dog-owning seniors have lower blood pressure and lower cholesterol than their pet-less peers. Having a dog also reduces the risk of heart attack - and boosts your chances of long-term survival if you have one.
Dogs Are Social Mediums
A natural-born icebreaker, your dog will introduce you to everyone from next-door neighbors to perfect strangers. It’s impossible to pass a dog without making a “pat stop,” so head for the park — Bowser will take it from there.
They Organize Your Day
In the same way a canine friend can help an introvert, a dog may keep one sane, showered and solvent. Because a dog owner knows he/she must feed and walk a dog at certain times, they are more organized during the day. Makes sense: Dogs, like humans, thrive on structure; they need to be fed, walked and nurtured at regular intervals.
Dogs Get You
MRI scanners showed that the canine brain reacts to voices and sounds, such as crying or laughter, in the same way the human brain does. Dogs are also the only non-human animals who scan the left side of a face - the process whereby people, too, “read” emotions.
They Boost Quality of Life
For many older Americans, a dog means the difference between a life lived and a life merely endured. Dogs help you stay safe and independent: They provide ears for the deaf, eyes for the blind and an early warning system at the approach of dangers (both real and imagined, of course!).
