“Auntie Mary says I should go to Kip summer school like my cousins did to help me get good SAT scores. Do I have to go, mum?’’ “Well,” said mum, “what made her say that? We always think you are doing ok and your dad and I never hear bad things about you from your teacher’s reports. What made Emma and Eddie agree to go? Eddie hates school and Emma is always top of her class and wouldn’t need extra Maths or English lessons, although Eddie might as he is not quite as clever as his sister”. The next weekend Auntie Mary brought Emma and Eddie over for a visit so mum asked Auntie Mary why she said that I should go to Kip summer school. Auntie Mary said that Emma was always ‘top of the class’ but two of her friends in year 6 began to make rapid progress and were giving her a run for her money, consequently her confidence took a knock. However, after the stress of the SATs tests were over, she plucked up the courage to ask her friends how they had improved so much. They told her they’d been going to Kip. Around this time the Kip summer school star leaflets arrived. Auntie Mary suggested she join the August sessions. Emma said that Kip had really helped her start the first year at the new school much more happily, and now she was confident with her friends in top set. “But that isn’t true for Eddie,” said my mum, we all knew that Eddie hated school! Ok, he loved his teacher, friends and playing in the school football team but he always complained that sums and spelling made his brain ache! Auntie Mary laughed and told us that, yes that had been the case before! She then went on to tell mum that a couple of years ago Eddie began to fret about
going back to school. He developed unexplained tummy aches and was losing sleep. She and his dad were a bit concerned then one day in midAugust Uncle Jimmy was clearing out his car, at long last after much nagging , Auntie Mary said, and he found the Kip star leaflet under a seat in his car, shows how often he looked or cleaned under there! Anyway Eddie joined the summer school sessions at Matlock and, much to his surprise, really enjoyed it. Eddie piped up at this point and said that he had learnt how to carry numbers and really liked getting stickers. He loved it so much he stayed on for two years and Kip took him through SATs and through the change to senior school. I’m still not sure I want to go to Kip summer school, but my mum and dad seem determined that I will. I tried to lose the Kip Star leaflet we were given in school last week, but mum asked the teacher for another one. Ah well guess that’s it now, I just hope that I like it as much as Eddie did ’cos I am not brainy like Emma. Dad said I can do the cricket summer school though if I agree to go to Kip and all my mates are doing that so that’s cool. Ben, my best friend, said his mum might let him come to Kip with me as it is only two weeks at the end of August and they will be back from their holidays then. That would be great!
Let your child experience the Kip Summer School effect by calling Jo on 01629 56611 or 01246 220224 for a free assessment and to book a place as numbers are limited.

COMPUTER TIP Handling SPAM Email Spam is the bane of all email and I’m often asked how can you control it? If you are using Gmail as your email provider then you already have a fairly good spam filter. Other providers provide similar offerings of variable quality but if you’re downloading email with something like Thunderbird then you can take control yourself. Spamihilator is a very useful utility which will examine your email and allow you to ‘teach’ it what is good and bad. You can block or always allow emails from specified individuals or even organisations. It’s versatile but it does require setting up and training because what is spam for one person isn’t always spam for another. More details on facebook or the website.

Derwent Heritage Build Restoring The Past & Respecting The Future Peter Corke from Derwent Heritage Build has a real passion for working on period buildings, his enthusiasm shines through as he explains how a traditional lime mortar and plastering restoration compares to the hard brittle, less porous, less permeable material such as cement mortar. After our recent meeting I started to be more mindful of the buildings around me, I noticed more and more the hard cement pointing left standing proud on some buildings, where in contrast the soft lime mortar looked so much more sympathetic to the fabric of that building. The use of lime declined in the twentieth century, but increasingly it has been recognised that hard, cement mortars are unsuitable for use on old buildings, and lime is enjoying a revival. Peter has the knowledge and skills needed to use lime, he’s worked on many historic projects including one in Romania, he’s also a qualified carpenter and can restore heritage
window frames and doors and uses appropriate heritage paints. Peter told me that “the conservationist at Derbyshire Dales, County Office and the Peak Park are stipulating more and more that traditional materials should be used in the restoration of historic buildings, in fact there are buildings built up to the 1920’s that used lime in this area”. Period Property Restoration & Maintenance: You don’t have to live in an castle, hall or farm house to need the skills from Derwent Heritage Build:
• Lime plastering • Lime pointing • Rendering • Restoration of Stonework • Carpentry & painting For more info call Peter on: 07398113268 or email peter@derwentheritagebuild.co.uk www.derwentheritagebuild.co.uk

CONSUMER CHAMPION
during the delay, it will carry over till later. Night time flights may be cheaper, but you may find you’re waiting around longer – and missing your transport connections when you get home. But what else can you do to avoid a travel trauma? Here’s a few tips:
JAMES WALKER – “FIGHTING FOR YOUR RIGHTS” Consumer Champion – the man who helps you resolve your consumer complaints!
Beating the Summer Blues Ah, the summer holidays. With the weather getting hotter (and the kids stuck at home), many of us will be packing our bags and jumping on a plane to get away from it all. Flight delays are by far the most complained-about travel trauma – and Resolver helped over 120,000 people reclaim their money for free last year. Delays can be caused by lots of problems – anything from sudden snowstorms, foggy mornings or even the occasional active volcano. But if you’re raring to go on holiday – or you’re ready to go home – flight delays are certainly frustrating. You can’t pre-empt a flight delay unfortunately, but you can stack the odds in your favour. Make sure that you book a flight that leaves earlier in the day, for example. The fast turnaround time of the budget airlines means if there’s a delay at any of their stops
Get insured. A surprisingly substantial number of people travel without insurance. From missing baggage to delayed flights, it’s cover you can’t afford to travel without. Make sure you start the policy now, not just before you travel. That way you can avoid getting caught out cancellation costs. Keeping the kids calm. Keeping the kids occupied if you’re delayed can be stressful. Take some disposable items like colouring books to keep them occupied so you’re not weighed down before you board. Planning ahead: Make sure you’ve got some flexibility built in with your booking with your hotel too. Call ahead and confirm and write down the contact details. Make sure you’ve checked out the cancelation policy before you book – and book direct from the hotel if you can. Cancellation can sometimes be a little more complicated if you’ve booked through a third party. Expect the unexpected: So, you look at the baggage carousel desperately, but your luggage is missing. What next? Well your insurer should be able to help with an emergency payment but avoid the holiday being ruined by having emergency cash. Take a credit card specifically for holidays (don’t use it the

rest of the time – lock it in a drawer!) That way you’ve got access to funds if there’s a problem. Get the details of the problem: If your flight is delayed, stay calm. Ask for written confirmation of the delay and what you’re entitled to if things don’t improve (like food vouchers, for example). Keep the documents should you need to claim. You can use Resolver’s free website to claim for delays and cancelations up to six years ago! Hiring a rental car: If you’re planning on getting a rental car abroad, make sure you take an inventory of everything that’s wrong with the car when you get it. We hear too many stories of people being caught out by charges for damage
that was already on the car! Always get the rental people to sign off anything you spot that might be wrong – even if they tell you it isn’t necessary. Other disasters: It’s a good idea to snap a few pics of your passport and travel documents and save them under a wellhidden file on your phone or online? Don’t save your pin numbers though! If you lose your stuff, you can always get hold of people who could help you. You can find out more about your rights or make a complaint using Resolver for free at www.resolver.co.uk.
