What Language Are You Speaking? Have you ever observed a couple in the supermarket or some other public space and observing the way they are speaking to each other, and wonder what on earth they are doing together? I don’t know about you, but I can almost feel the resentment and animosity being generated. Sad, and doubly so when they’re accompanied by their children who are busy soaking up life lessons from their parents about what relationships are like. Whatever else is going on in that relationship I can pretty much guarantee that couples like this are not speaking the same language. The same Love Language that is. Have you heard of the 5 Love Languages? An incredibly insightful (and FREE) assessment tool in the form of a simple online questionnaire which reveals the ‘language’ you primarily use for giving and receiving love. Originally created for couples, there’s now a number of additions including Children and Teenagers versions which are pure gold for parents looking to create better connections with their offspring.
partner’s primary Love Language doesn’t match theirs (and it rarely does)… instead they put most value on Quality Time. So whist one partner toils extra hours at work to try and please their partner, in reality that partner is sitting at home feeling unloved because, through their eyes, if their partner really cared for them, they would want to be spending time with them rather than working all the hours. Can you see how quickly resentment and misunderstandings can blow up? The classic line “my wife doesn’t understand me” isn’t as cheesy as it sounds, but the reality is that it’s just as likely that he doesn’t understand his wife either! They’re both busy speaking their own languages and neither understands each other. When you appreciate the way you instinctively interpret giving and receiving love and ALSO understand the perspective of your partner (or child) things can start to change almost instantly. Dr Gary Chapman the creator of The 5 Love Languages tells a story about a son who was in counselling because he strongly believed his father did not love him. The boys primary Love Language was Physical Touch. Seeing the father and demonstrating that the way to convince his son that he WAS loved was to instigate touch into their relationship, caused the father to reveal that he didn’t know where or how to begin with that. That he himself had been brought up with parents who did not touch or hug him. What was needed was some coaching.. starting with practicing simple gestures like a pat on the back as he passed his son in their home. Eventually the father revealed tearfully that he and his son had hugged and the relationship was swiftly healing.
So what are these languages and what do they mean? The Five are: Quality Time, Words of Affirmation, Gifts, Acts of Service and Physical Touch. Whilst most of us are capable of ‘speaking’ in any one of these languages to some degree, we all have one we favour. We interpret the giving and receiving of love in this language, so for example maybe one partner in a relationship has Acts of Service as their primarily Love Language. They will express their love by doing things for their partner, usually going beyond what their partner might rationally expect as ‘their share’ of chores and tasks in and out of the home. This might be expressed in All of the test versions are free and available at their work; working excessively long hours or taking www.5lovelanguages.com and it just might be that on multiple jobs, this being in their eyes the way they what they reveal gives you just the insight you need are showing love for their partner by working extra to transform your relationships. hard ‘for’ their partner. But imagine that their Sarah is an Associate Therapist at So Healthy Chiropractors in Matlock, dealing with emotional health and behavioural change. She is based at Ogston Reservoir as well as seeing people in their own homes. Find her at www.sarahkallend.com or on Facebook @theheartspeaker

Deputy Lieutenant praises allotment holders for joining the Queens Green Canopy Campaign’ Starkholmes allotments held a special garden party on Sunday 10th July, to celebrate the unveiling of a plaque commemorating a beautiful Greengage tree that was planted recently towards the Queens Green canopy project. This official plaque was made by members of the Royal British Legion Industries, the RBL is a charity that provides financial, social and emotional support to members and veterans of the British Armed Forces, their families and dependants. Fittingly, Starkholmes allotments was founded in 1925 and it’s believed they were originally dedicated to returning soldiers and their families returning from the 1st World War. In attendance during the unveiling were local residents, plot holders and dignitaries. Nick Hodgson, Deputy Lieutenant of Derbyshire, Mayor Paul Cruise, Paul Howgill Regional Representative from the National Allotment Society, Councillor Steve Flitter, representing the local Royal British Legion and Barbra Marriott from Matlock in Bloom, also in attendance were Councillor David Hughes and Councillor Steve Wain. Sadly, Starkholmes allotments are under real threat of being lost forever. They have been served an eviction notice by the private landowner of 15 years. They are working hard with both Matlock Town Council and Derbyshire Dales District Council to save this community asset in the heart of Starkholmes village in Matlock.
Some of the dignitaries present made speeches during the unveiling. The Mayor, Paul Cruise commented that ”Starkholmes allotments is a wonderful community asset, established just after the First World War, they will have offered much needed rehabilitation and recreation to the “Tommies” coming back from the front. I’m very pleased to attend the installation of the Royal British Legion Green canopy plaque. It’s a very special way to celebrate Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee.” Paul Howgill from NAS said "The National Allotment Society tries to promote, preserve and protect allotments, today you are taking the great stance to try to protect and preserve your own site." Deputy Lieutenant - Nick Hodgson commented that "Starkholmes Allotments is a great community asset with a very long history. I’m really grateful for their contribution to the Queen’s Green Canopy of a lovely Greengage tree, and wish them all the best in their efforts to maintain the allotments for another 100 years.” Matlock in Bloom Barbara Marriott said that “Matlock in Bloom supports the campaign to save Starkholmes Allotments from development, as green spaces are now more important than ever in our community” Invites were sent to Prince Charles who is the patron of NAS, and Sarah Dines (MP), she sent her apologies and best wishes. To get in touch with Starkholmes Allotments please contact Mary Derrick Secretary on mary.derrick@hotmail.com or 07718 228439
