HAVE YOURSELF A As a professional organiser, sustainability is something that I discuss regularly with my clients throughout the year and at Christmas it is even more important to consider your carbon footprint as we enter into one of the busiest times for consumerism on the calendar. Here are some ways to be more sustainable this Christmas, along with some festive styling tips. Christmas tree – real or fake? If you don’t already own a tree and need to buy one this year then think carefully. Most artificial trees are made and imported from China so why not consider a tree made from pallets or driftwood made in the UK – Etsy have some great examples. A real tree takes around 10-12 years to grow (to approx. 6 feet) and during this time provides a habitat for wildlife. So, if you recycle correctly then a real tree would be my choice, and of course, the smell will be wonderful! Use your existing trees decorations or buy some second hand. Gift wrapping Recycled brown kraft paper is always a winner with twine and a fresh sprig of foliage to finish. Why not try using colourful pages from a magazine or an old music score. Sticky tape, ribbons and paper covered in glitter can't be recycled. Presents I love to buy gifts and this year I am going to try to buy experiences rather than things. Buying from a charity shop and shopping
locally will be on my radar and if I have the time, I’ll make some gifts. Whether you love baking, sewing, or painting, why not get creative this season. Decorations I was a floral designer for over 10 years and Christmas was my favourite time of year. Rich red roses, electric blue viburnum berries, amaryllis, hypericum berries, berried ivy, eucalyptus, larch with cones – beautiful!! What can you do on a budget that will look fabulous? Gather lots of winter foliage from the garden and arrange it with candles and tea light holders on a window ledge. Use small, recycled glass containers and fill them with berries and foliage and dot them amongst tealights along a fireplace or narrow ledge creating a wonderful cosy scene. Fold your napkins in an oblong and add fir cones, a sprig of fresh rosemary, bay or Skimmia to each table setting to finish your festive table. For the outdoors, make yourself a door swag. Cut a few of pieces of fir off the back of your fresh Christmas tree and then add larch branches, a few stems of your favourite berries, some other winter foliage (eucalyptus is fabulous) and wire it all together with a couple of big cones at the top of the swag where it hangs. Have a wonderful Christmas everyone! Debbie, Simple Living Today

When a lie-in won’t hack it… I looked across at my husband in the dark of this Winter morning and almost perfectly in sync we said, “it’s too early!”. The reality was that at ten to seven on a Monday morning with three dogs to sort out and both of us with businesses to run, it really wasn’t too early, it just felt like it. Maybe you quite fancied a lie-in this morning or certainly like the idea of getting a little more sleep in your life? But what about those mornings when you know you’ve had enough shut eye, but everything still feels like it’s in the ‘too hard’ box? Fatigue or just feeling weary often has nothing to do with sleep, instead it’s about the need for another kind of rest. Sleep of course IS a form of rest, but rest comes in many forms and it just maybe that it’s one of these other types of rest that your body is craving. So besides sleep, what are some other ways in which we can find rest and be refreshed? Emotional Rest: if there’s too much going on, we can become overwhelmed. Consider whether you are taking on other people’s ‘stuff’ maybe you have fallen into ‘fixer’ mode where you feel responsible for changing people or situations singlehandedly. Maybe it’s your own feelings that are over powering you? Learning to accept rather than attempt to deflect uncomfortable feelings can bring great release. Sensory Rest: most of us are surrounded by gadgets, sounds, people… just think about taking a short trip out from your home and notice how many things are calling for your attention. Research has shown that taking
a daily 20 minute walk in nature is more effective on mood than taking antidepressants. Turn off the alerts on your phone … hey turn off your phone altogether and allow your focus to drift onto something refreshing or new. Social Rest: in these weird times of Pandemic normal social activities have been curtailed and whilst the beginnings of returning to our old patterns is welcome, it can also be exhausting. Those who are more introverted in nature get their energy from time spent alone, so if that’s you, be sure to hold something back. Spiritual Rest: whether its faith led activities, volunteering your time to causes you feel strongly about or spending time exploring your purpose and goals, time spent on the ‘inner you’ always refreshes. Physical Rest: other than sleep, there are active ways in which our bodies can get some respite. Exercising regularly believe it or not rests the body as exerting our muscles fully can help us to fully discharge the tension in our bodies, rather than holding onto a permanent state of tension which is never quite dispelled. It doesn’t have to be hugely exerting either: a relaxation class, yoga or massage will bring the same effect. Rolling different rest type activities together can be really effective. Go for a walk (Physical) with a friend (Social) or turn off your phone (Sensory) and count your blessings (Spiritual). And it could just be that a lie-in is exactly what you need after all!

Kip in Matlock and Chesterfield is celebrating its 10-year anniversary! But how did it all begin? Do you remember the winter of 2010 all that snow and ice that hung around for months? We had seen nothing like it for years. Well Jo was then living and working as the Principal of an FE college in Lebanon and had taken off from Beirut to come home to her family for Christmas… but it wasn’t as easy as she thought! When she arrived in Heathrow there were no trains to get her to St Pancras station, and no tickets from there to Derby either! She then tried all the car hire firms so she could drive home, but again they had nothing. Travel at Christmas is always a challenge, but Jo was really up against it!
Kip offered Jo an outlet for her teaching and managerial talents, so she opened Kip McGrath Matlock in April 2012 and had 1 student and a couple of computers! Chesterfield opened the following year in April 2013 again with one student. It takes time to grow a business and get the marketing into the right places to attract new students and Jo saw a steady trickle of students into Matlock and Chesterfield until today she can proudly claim to have helped 910 young people into their career choices, raised their educational levels in mainstream school and made a lot of new friends with the young people, their parents and grandparents.
Eventually she managed to get a flight up to Manchester where she hired a car to drive home, freezing in her warm climate clothing. So, what does this have to do with the formation of Kip in Matlock?
Jo gets most of her new students from existing families and word of mouth by parents spreading her success stories. She is now onto her third or fourth sibling in some families. One family has the full set: Charlie in Year 11, the youngest one aged 6 and the middle brothers 10 and 13 already Well, the Matlock Kip was born over a cup of working away with her. coffee with Jo’s sister sitting beside a warm open fire and talking about what Jo wanted to do next But it’s not just parents who seek her out… Local in her career and where. The snow didn’t put her schools use her directly and now the County off the idea of moving back to the UK, but she Council is requisitioning her services with special needed something to work towards. Taking the needs children who need more individualised and decision to ‘go it alone’ and set up her own personal support. business was a big step (as it is for anyone who So, congratulations on your 10th anniversary has never done this before). So, Jo went back to to Jo and all the tutors and students at Kip! Beirut and handed in her notice which had to be You can call Jo for your initial assessment a year!

Toys Galore in Matlock - Bucking the trend..... The Vintage Toy Exchange (VTE) opened it's new 'collectors' toy shop on Dale Road in Matlock on the 22nd October to little fan fare, but huge hope and anticipation which was not disappointed as the shop was barely empty of customers from opening it's doors on the Friday until shutting on Saturday. A family run business, it has relocated from another premises in Dale Road as the final part of a significant investment in a business that opened in December 2019, only to be hit by the lockdowns and uncertainty that followed. Senior Partner John Morgan commented, 'Hindsight is a wonderful manager, and there were times when I thought we would never get going, however out of adversity has grown opportunity and a decision to invest and push on in the future has seen us arrive where we are - A new shop, new offices, a very active internet business, standing nationwide specialist fairs all supported by a dedicated team of partners and staff.'
VTE specialises in collectible toys both old and new and draws on John's nearly 40 years in the industry as a Dealer and Auctioneer. 'During my time in the industry 'the wheel of fortune' has certainly turned and the buzz words of the early 1980's of Matchbox Yesteryear, tinplate trains, Hornby Dublo, have been replaced with Star Wars, Ghostbusters, Masters of the Universe to name but a few' commented John. However the one aspect of the business opportunity I did not forsee was the number of children that would visit and catering for these has seen a diversity of product range into newer toys, although all the stock has one common denominator in that it is 'pre-loved' - although very often not played with and the company is always on the hunt for stock. 'It feels slightly ironic' continued John - ' that at a time when the headlines are full of toy shortages our companies rather tongue in cheek stock policy rings in my ears - 'We never have enough.....although we have too much'. ☺ Vintage Toy Exhange 37, Dale Road, Matlock www.vintagetoyexhange.net
