Haarlem Artspace to Open Contemporary Art Gallery in Wirksworth Based in Wirksworth’s historic 18th Century Town Assembly room at the Red Lion, the new Haarlem Artspace Gallery will open with a group show ‘Gathering’ for an evening private view on Friday 26th of November. Director Olivia Punnett selected this exquisite show curated by rural Cornish artists, Verity Birt and Jonathan Michael Ray, as it focuses on communal acts of intimacy between people, sites and materials, connecting communities with their rural landscape. It will be the first of a series of stimulating exhibitions that have been programmed throughout the year, opening to the public on weekends. Together with Wirksworth’s gem of an ale house, the Feather Star, and the new Red Lion

hotel, this exciting partnership is hoping to showcase the quality of contemporary art that is available in non-traditional city-based venues. The new gallery is an extension of Haarlem Artspace which provides dedicated studios and co-working spaces for creative practitioners. Olivia, artist, curator and founding co-director at Haarlem, said: “Like our Haarlem Artspace creative studios, the new gallery will champion rural contemporary art and is for our local community, as well as visitors from further afield. “We have an ambitious annual programme planned to encourage a broad audience to find out about our fantastic Haarlem Artspace creative community and visit the stunning historic town of Wirksworth, which sits in a truly inspiring landscape.”

Carrying Lockdown Pounds? The Lockdown 10 (or15!) I’ve heard it called… hands up if you’re carrying more pounds now than when the world first locked down in March of last year? Now that’s a lot of hands! Some people have been busier than ever during this Pandemic, but even some of them may not have escaped the extra pounds, despite being more active. There’s a number of factors that have contributed to the thickening waistlines of our nation: 1. Restrictions on movement: despite our daily exercise hour, the gyms and sports facilities have mostly been closed, many of us have walked a few steps to work at the kitchen table instead of a brisk walk from the bus stop or car park to work. And then our working day may’ve been spent in dangerous proximity to the fridge or kitchen food cupboards. And whatever you think of the ‘calories in versus calories out’ view of weight control, the truth of it is that if your life becomes more sedentary and you continue to eat the same diet, you’d be really lucky if you’d escaped without gaining a few pounds. 2. These restrictions have left many of us bored, cut off from leisure or work activities which normally take place outside of our home. Lots of us have significantly increased our TV viewing over the past 18 months to fill this ‘leisure gap’ and what goes well with watching TV? It’s snacks of course? You might still be eating good healthy well balanced meals and still have found your trousers getting tighter because of the snacks and alcohol that go well with watching TV or participating in Zoom Quiz Nights! And if you’ve been hard at work, still outside of your home, your leisure time has been just as affected as anyone else’s. 3. And then there’s perhaps the biggest factor of all… emotional eating. When the world feels like it’s spinning off it’s axis, when everything we know is changed beyond belief, when we’re isolated from our loved ones and support networks, when we may have personally been impacted by grief, loss and ill health.. I could go on and on…. we’ve been overwhelmed by a tsunami of feelings in response

to all of this. ALL of us have. And how we deal with uncomfortable feelings differs from person to person. Some can, or have taught themselves to face them, to accept them and to work through them until they are ‘processed’. Many use things like work, hobbies, alcohol, gambling to distract themselves from how they feel. And these strategies often compound the issue by causing other problems. And as I’ve said, some of those things haven’t been available to us during the pandemic anyway. Others turn to the fridge or the snacks cupboard to ‘self sooth’. We learned at our Mothers knee didn’t we that a sweetie or a biscuit makes everything better (“there, there, don’t cry”)? And sugar certainly does provide a short term boost of energy, but it’s followed a couple of hours (or less) later by a ‘crash’ that leads you back to the biscuit tin. So it’s not surprising that the two main reasons people are contacting me for help with is Anxiety and Weight Control. I’m going to share with you one of the tasks that I set people who want to stop mindless or emotional eating. It’s very simple and very powerful and if you’ve got a smartphone you can do it for free. Download a free photo collage app like Photogrid and then find yourself a buddy who is also looking to lose some weight. As you go through the day take a quick photo of EVERYTHING YOU EAT OR DRINK. The odd handful of something … every drink… everything. Then at the end of the day it’ll take literally moments to use the app to make a photo grid of your food and drink day. Send it to your friend and they send you theirs. What does the day tell you about your eating habits? What can you learn from it? This little task completed for a minimum of 10 days will not just reveal the things that will help you lose those pounds, but importantly shift your eating out of ‘mindlessness’ into ‘mindfulness’. If you try it, I’d love to know how you get on.. let me know at sarah@sarahkallend.com.

Kefi Café is a great new cafe in Matlock, that's open 6 days a week for breakfast and lunch, with occasionally Bistro nights. They have a varied menu serving Breakfast Sandwiches, Eggs various ways, Toast and Brioche combinations, and for Lunch - fresh salads, pizza flatbread's, sandwiches, meze and a range of delicious drinks. They cater not only for meat eaters but have options for vegetarians, vegans and people with gluten intolerance's …… ohh and they’re dog friendly too! The name Kefi comes from the Greek language, in general it means joy, fun and happiness and passion for life! The Tate family who own Kefi opened their doors in August this year after spending the summer creating a light and airy space to dine in, with a lovely private courtyard! On first impressions the interior is bright and welcoming, and so are the lovely staff! It was Alex Tate’s dream to one day have her own café, she had worked in the hospitality industry in various positions since leaving school, so when the old ‘Greenway’ premises on Snitterton Road came vacant she decided to make her dream into a reality. It’s very much a family run business, with mum Tasha and dad James working in the kitchen and daughter Alex is front of house, they have just appointed a chef who’ll be starting soon, so they’re all very excited about that! I was lucky enough to go along with a friend to sample some of the food that they have on offer, I don’t eat meat or dairy so I ordered the vegan options, I was impressed as they had a good selection of these. My friend and I started with a selection of olives served with olive oil and fresh parsley, washed down with a cup of Egyptian Mint and Persian Pomegranate tea. From the Meze and Salad menu we ordered the BBQ

Cauliflower Bites and a Salad consisting of Quinoa, Avocado, Peppers, Pomegranate Jewels, Mixed Nuts and Seeds, plus a Pizza Flatbread topped with a tomato sauce base with added Roasted Veg, Basil and Balsamic Vinegar. Everything that was served to us was very pleasing to the eye, the Salad was fresh and delicious, the Cauliflower Bites had a tangy BBQ sauce with them and the Flat Bread was yummy. We followed the meal with a delicious vegan hot chocolate and my friend had a coffee. We’d both heard from friends that the coffee was good here and my friend confirmed that they weren’t exaggerating! I’m glad to see that they have installed a commercial espresso coffee machine which means I’m going to be a regular visitor. The plan for the cafe is for it to be as sustainable as possible with one of the goals of avoiding too much food waste, they’ve designed the menu with this in mind. As Kefi becomes more popular, which I’m sure it will, then obviously the menu will expand. Breakfast t is served from 9 - 11:30,with some of the tempting choices such as Loaded Toast, Brioche French Toast, Eggs Your Way, Granola and Bacon or Sausage Cob; Lunch is served from 12 noon, see advert on page 5 for more information. So…. when you’re next in Matlock do pop into Kefi to say hello and enjoy a satisfying Hot or Cold Drink, Breakfast or a leisurely Lunch - Enjoy everyone! TANTRA

stays untapped. But we can awaken this energy. And this in part is what Tantra is all about.

~ The Art of Living Sacredly

Tantra is actually an ancient path that comprises of many practices and tools, such as:

Have you ever found yourself pondering what this life is all about? Why you are here? Or felt ~ “ Surely there must be more to life than This !? “ There is a lot of misunderstanding around Tantra & what it is, so I thought I’d write a little piece about it. This was prompted by a man approaching me in the street later one evening, some weeks ago, with my business google listing open, cajolingly insisting I was open. & so ~ I devote this article to him ! ;-) (And yes he was reported to the police! I would actively encourage anybody who experiences this kind of thing to do so, as it’s 2021, unacceptable, and really about time our streets were safer & our world was a little more ‘enlightened’.) We see the confusion, Tantra is often used synonymously to refer to sex-work, or sexual massage. When in fact it’s actually about spiritual awakening; waking up to who we really are; and about unleashing our fullest vibrant potential here in our lives. The confusion comes from us still living in a largely sex-negative culture & environment, which means that healthy conscious sexuality is not openly discussed or acknowledged without shame, uncomfortability, taboo etc. We all know that our sexuality is one of the most powerful forces, and when driven underground it becomes part of our collective shadow, which drives so much of the awful violations we see, experience and hear about: Rape, abuse, molestations, to more covert behaviours. Even things like body dysmorphia, depression etc can be indirect causes of this social problem.

Yoga, Breathwork, Ecstatic Dance; Meditation; Sacred-sexuality; Sound-work; Bodywork; Emotional Catharsis; Ritual; Inner-work, etc. All of which help us to clear out all the gunk, conditioning, blockages, past wounds, emotional blockages etc, that weigh down our nervous-systems and limit our natural brilliance. They help us to liberate our own life-force energy; to awaken this sleeping serpent of Kundalini, and to realise more of who we truly are, & what we are capable of. Awakening this energy is at the heart of all mystic states & paths. It can lead to: ● Expanded, alternate states of consciousness ● Reconnection to ourselves, to nature, to divinity, to the cosmos ● Experiencing states of bliss, profound love and interconnectedness with life ● Powerful creativity ● Mental brilliance and awakening our inner genius ● Unlimited pleasure ● Vitality, energy, radiance, magnetism ● True power, confidence, beauty, glow and self-love 3 ways to start implementing this in your life? Awaken your senses: 1 - Slooow down: Take just 1 minute, eat something delicious and really taste every flavour and every texture, fully. 2 - Go for a slow walk, feel the air on your skin, notice each sensation as your feet touch the earth. 3 - Use the Q: ‘How can I find pleasure in this?’ - In every act you can, from washing up to showering, to doing something mundane you’d ordinarily hate.

So WHAT IS Tantra? ~ To talk about Tantra i first have to mention Kundalini energy. Kundalini is a fascinating esoteric term which relates to a (mostly Would you like to learn more? What values do you put on a grade 4 in GCSE Maths or English? Over the last two years we have seen changes to the ways that GCSE grades were arrived at.
