Have you made a Will yet? Apparently More than two-thirds of people in the UK don't have a will! If you’re one of those people then speak to Andrew Hodkin (see page 7). I recently went to see Jeremy Croxall from Matlock Property Services (see page 9) and I was very impressed by his portfolio of work he’d done over the last couple of years. Do you need your car servicing? Check out Matlock Ford on page 13, they have a 10% off voucher for Ford scheduled car services, just show their advert to redeem. Our bodies are designed to move well, so if you’re not moving well I suggest you call one of our new advertisers, Heather Watson on page 17 from ‘Designed 2 Move’. Heather offers specialist physiotherapy services and also takes Nordic Walking classes, they’re a great way to keep fit? Finally on page 33 we have a new advertiser Holtams Kitchen and Bathroom Specialists; they’re based in Heage Nr Ripley; actually they put our kitchen in 10 + years ago and it’s still looking great! I hope you enjoy the next few months and I’ll see you in October.

LEWIS Banking It’s not yet time to hoot the horn in celebration, but There's a bank account price war. They're desperate for switchers - paying cashback on bills, 5% savings, or just bunging you cold hard cash. Yet just 2% of people have switched in the last year. Unless you're 100% happy with your bank, check now if you can gain. The contest has stretched far beyond traditional banks. Even M&S wants to be, well, the M&S of banking. It’s just launched its first fees-free account. In fact so much so, it’s willing to bribe you with a £100 voucher if you switch. So here’s what you need to know about the best fee-free bank accounts…
·
·
·
7-day switching means it's now mostly no hassle. The 7-Day Switching system now moves your direct debits and standing orders, closes your old account and ensures payments made to it get forwarded to your new bank - all set up within seven working days. £100 switching bribes galore. If they’ll pay you to switch, unless there’s a compelling reason, grab the cash. Though you'll need to pass the credit check and genuinely switch to get the money….. The new www.marksandspencer.com account gives £100 on an M&S gift card if you switch, one reward point for every £1 spent at the store, a £100 interestfree overdraft and doesn’t require you to pay a minimum amount each month. While decent for regular M&S shoppers, basic rate taxpayers will need to spend £500/mth there for it to beat Halifax and its bank's service is untested compared to First Direct.
The www.firstdirect.com account has smashed every customer service poll I've done, 92% rate it 'great'. New switchers get paid £100 cash, a £250 0% overdraft and a linked 6% regular saver account. The min monthly pay -in is £1,000, equivalent to paying in a £13,400 plus salary. - The www.halifax.co.uk Reward account gives £100 cash to switchers and pays a flat £5 (after basic rate tax) each month you're in credit. Avoid its costly overdraft though. The min pay-in's £750/mth. Santander wins my ‘most innovative account’ pick. While technically not fee-free - www.santander.co.uk 123 account only charges £2/mth fee and for most this is dwarfed by what it pays back. While Santander was once known for poor service, the 123 account is our second highest-rated, with 75% saying it's great. The
minimum pay-in is low too, at £500/mth (equivalent £6,000 salary). As Kelly tweeted me (@martinslewis) "I'm getting about £18 per month back after my fee - fantastic. £6 just for my mortgage." Switch bank and earn 5% savings. A range of top feefree bank accounts now offer high savings rates as lossleaders to get you to switch to them – such as TSB for up to £2,000 at 5%, for up to £5,000 Lloyds is 4% and for up to £20,000 (see above) Santander is 3%. Slash overdraft costs. An overdraft is a debt like any other. The key is to cut the interest so you can clear it quicker. There are two main choices… - Switch to a 0% overdraft. www.firstdirect.com offers £100 to new joiners and a £250 0% overdraft (min pay-in £1,000/mth). www.nationwide.co.uk FlexDirect account gives a one-year no-fee overdraft (amount depends on credit score) but it only lasts a year. So use that time to clear it. Full info in www.mse.me/overdrafts. - Or shift it to a 0% credit card. A few specialist credit cards offer 'money transfers', where it pays cash to your bank to clear your overdraft, then you owe it instead. The longest is 31mths 0% with a one-off fee of 4% of the amount transferred. It’s hugely powerful and cheap, but needs to be done right, so please see full best buys and instructions at www.moneysavingexpert.com/ moneytransfers Think banks are all b*****ds? Get an ethical account. And it won’t even cost you extra. Here, we factor in both finances and the rating given by Ethical Consumer evaluating behaviour on the environment, human and animal rights, politics and where they invest. Despite its recent scandals, the www.cooperativebank.co.uk is still rated one of its top picks on ethics, it pays £100 to switch to it and donates £25 to one of seven charities. Also try www.nationwide.co.uk, mentioned above, and www.nandp.co.uk, whose debit card allows cheap spending abroad. Or for a real change, find a credit union - a local savings and loan non-profit co-operative, 25 of the 500 offer current accounts. Find one near you www.abcul.org.

Parkside Fitness is the dream baby of Dean Pratt; Dean was frustrated that he couldn’t find a gym in the local area that he felt comfortable in. He was looking for a friendly sociable gym that was affordable and where everyone would be accepted no matter what shape or size they were, so he decided to open his own.

Local people can come and have a look around, try equipment ( while being supervised) and enjoy some hot food and live entertainment; they’ll also be a bouncy castle and face painting for the kids.
Since opening Parkside Fitness last year with his partner Paula, they’ve really tried to listen their customers comments and have evolved by adding more classes and equipment as needed.
Dean the owner told me that “ It’s really important to me that we have a friendly culture here; that’s why I’m really looking forward to our Fun Day in September. I’m also really excited that we have Suzi Lupu (from the Arc) coming to work with us soon on a full time basis, she’ll be a real asset to us”.

guinea pig Despite being technically a rodent, the guinea pig has gained widespread popularity in the Western world as a household pet. With their docile natures and seeming enjoyment of handling and care, this makes an ideal lile pet for children who are happy to gently play and entertain these furry creatures. Domesc guinea pigs bond and recognize other guinea pigs and it is for this reason that they should be kept in same-sex pairs. In contrast to hamsters, guinea pigs have developed a different biological rhythm from those living in the wild and tend to have longer periods of play interspersed with shorter bouts of sleep. This makes them great pets for those who prefer not to be nocturnal! Guinea pigs are poor climbers, although they can navigate small obstacles. They also startle very easily so care should be taken not to scare them.

In the
PICTURE By Gita Joshi, AWAD. www.orsomajor.com Buying prints is a great way for art enthusiasts to become art collectors. Prints come in a variety of types, and are most commonly produced in edions, also known as limited edions. Limited edions can be of any number. All limited edioned prints should have the number wrien on them on the front or the back as well as the arst’s signature. It is worth knowing that the price of edioned prints is likely to rise as fewer works remain available. So if you have your eye on a print, it’s worth geng in there early! Most galleries will stock prints by the arsts that they represent, and if they are not framed on the wall, you will find them in the print rack, also known as a print browser. Some galleries specialize in prints but I prefer to show both original art and prints by the arsts that I work with as I find this gives the buyer a fuller understanding of the arst’s work. Prints offer an affordable way of starng an art collecon. If an edion is small, say 6, it is quite likely the starng price will be higher than something that has an edion size of say, 100.
Buying prints - starng your collecon Many arsts create prints to expand their customer base giving more people an opportunity to own an artwork where an original piece might be out of their price range. If a print is not part of a limited edion, it can be part of an open edion. An open edion means that the individual prints are not numbered, though most likely they are signed. There would be no record of how many prints were produced of that image. So whether you go for limited edions or open edion, prints offer an easy way to start your art collecon and move from being an art enthusiast to an art collector!

using either a spring tine rake or an electric machine with hook line tines.
Breath Life Into Your Lawn SCARIFICATION: Over the course of a year, dead roots, grass clippings, leaves and other organic matter all increase the layer of thatch which forms at the base of the grass stems. As this mat increases in density, it prevents important nutrients, as well as water and air, from reaching the root zone. It also provides a perfect environment for moss to flourish. To treat moss, GreenThumb addresses the cause of the moss, and to this end will remove the surface thatch on which the moss is growing.
Rakes and domestic machines are relatively good at removing dead moss, but they have little or no effect on surface thatch. Although scarification does not form part of our standard lawn care programme, it is available as either a one-off treatment or as part of our annual treatment programmes, for which discounts are available. Please speak to your local Green Thumb Team today on 01246 275 747 for more details.
There was definitely more than a compeve streak when three members of the W.I. in Much Beatham decided to enter a compeon in the Village Fete. Can you work out who made what in the hope of gaining a prize?
CLUES 1. Neither Alice nor Mrs Baker made jam tarts and Kath had not baked any macaroons. 2. The lady who made jam tarts was very proud of her Belgian chocolate cake this year, and fully expected to be awarded a prize. 3. The person named Cooke produced a fine Victoria Sponge. 4. There was plenty of envious looks in Jenny’s direcon as she displayed her cinnamon buns.

Dales Directories Community Page and offering healthy activities in a safe and caring environment. At the time we were unsure as to how we would fund the Workers, but it soon became clear that setting up a Charity Shop was the answer!
Matlock Lighthouse Charity Shop Welcome to Valley CIDS We are an independent Christian charity based in Derbyshire, committed to serving children, young people and families through out-reach work in schools and the wider community. Valley CIDS (Christians Involved in Developing Society) was launched in 2000 by a group of Christians with a passion to serve, inspire and equip children, young people and families to develop their full potential in society today. ‘Investing in the next generation’ Valley CIDS was borne out of a passionate belief that by ‘investing in the next generation’ we can make a positive difference to the lives of children and young people and their families. An investment of time, energy and money sets in place strong foundations giving children the best possible chance in life. The Start Throughout the 1990’s, a group of Christians in Swanwick met regularly to pray for the local schools. From this faithful prayer God gave a vision to set up a charity which would employ Youth and Children’s Workers to deliver outreach work within schools and the wider community. Our aim was to serve the schools by offering Christian assemblies and RE support, and to serve the needs of young people by providing responsible role models,
A small village shop was offered to us at a ‘peppercorn’ rent to set up as a ‘donated goods’ shop, and as soon as we obtained Charitable status, this became our first Lighthouse Charity Shop. Along with generous donations from individuals and churches, the Lighthouse very quickly generated sufficient income to enable Valley CIDS to employ its first Children’s Worker. So the Valley CIDS vision was launched and from small beginnings the Charity has grown and developed to become a very significant and exciting organisation, impacting the lives of thousands of children and young people. We now operate 26 Lighthouse Charity Shops, which financially support our Children’s Team working in over seventy Primary Schools, along with our Youth Teams and two large Youth Centres. We also run Breakfast Clubs in four Primary Schools and the Saltpot community café. Matlock Lighthouse Charity Shop You can donate your goods directly to the Matlock Lighthouse in Crown Square Matlock. We are looking for anything that’s in good condition that can be sold in our shop, such as: Ÿ Clothes Ÿ Rags ( we have a company that collects from us) Ÿ Furniture Ÿ Books Ÿ DVD’s/CD’s Ÿ Electrical Goods ( all items will be PAT Tested before sale)
Ÿ Bric a Brac Ÿ House Clearances

PLOT Hoarding
It’s hard to remain excited when you’ve had courgee at every meal for a week, and marvellous though raspberries are there is a limit to just how many you can eat at once. Take a bit of me to store your harvest and you can be enjoying home grown right through the winter. Jobs for August:Water regularly - try to water either in the evening or early mornings. If you are growing main crop potatoes, watch out for signs of blight. Brown patches on the tops and edges of leaves are usually a first sign. Pinch out the tops of runner bean stems that are outgrowing their supports. Keep harvesng courgees!
those
Sow turnips and oriental salad plants such as Pak Choi and Chinese Cabbage Strawberry runners that were poed up in June to produce new plants can be planted out now.
If all has gone to plan (that’s a big if!) then August should be a very sasfying month on your plot, with your hard work being repaid by ample harvests of a good range of fruit and veg.
Blanching and then freezing works for loads of vegetables. Key to success is to cool quickly aer blanching so have a bowl of cold water at the ready and don’t forget to label what you are freezing!
The reality tends to be that the excitement of seeing your crops grow and ripen is inially followed by much enjoyment of the first fruits of your labour which can soon be replaced by a panic stricken ‘What the heck do I do with all these’! Certain crops (courgees and tomatoes spring to mind) can almost guarantee this sequence of events!
Another opon, and one that can work well for all those tomatoes, is to find a good recipe that you can cook, freeze and use later (how about a wonderful pasta sauce with your own tomatoes and home grown basil?). Even ‘difficult to freeze’ veg such as courgees can either be incorporated into a sauce, or blanched, frozen and then added to a stew at a later date.
Sharing with friends and neighbours is great but very oen they will have a glut of exactly the same thing at just the same me. What is called for are some simple ideas for storing and preserving your produce. It may be a long me before you are harvesng fresh peas or raspberries again but that doesn’t mean that you can’t be enjoying your home grown produce throughout the winter - it just takes a lile planning and now is the me to do it.
Cooking and freezing can work well for fruit too - apple or rhubarb are good stewed and frozen all ready for use in a crumble or pie. If you have a truly wonderful fruit crop then why not arm yourself with a good recipe book and get started on some jam making? It’ll be delicious on your toast in the morning, and what beer gi than a pot of homemade raspberry jam?
Onions (and garlic) that have been lied and le to dry can be plaited and hung in a cool, dry place. Net bags, or ghts, also work if you don’t fancy plaing. Potatoes can be stored in boxes or paper sacks in a dark, dry building but you should check them regularly, removing any that show signs of rong. A good size freezer is a real boon for making the most of your produce.
It’s amazing how many books there are that tell you how to grow your fruit and veg, but how lile informaon there is on just how to store it all! One wonderful lile book, that deals with just this queson is ‘How to store your garden produce’ by Piers Warren. It’s packed with informaon about how to store just about anything and a great addion to any gardeners library. Happy harvesng!
