Create Your Dream Garden Room Creating Places is a family run company based in Darley Dale that designs and builds dream garden rooms for their Clients. With over 20 years of commercial construction experience, they have established a team of Architects, Structural Engineers and Building Control Consultants to develop a modular timber building system that can be applied to all types of project. This ensures that the buildings are incredibly efficient in terms of material usage, energy consumption, design and build duration and most importantly price. A fundamental aspect pf the approach is that all their buildings can be treated as permanent rather that “temporary” or “mobile” structures, which differentiates them from their competitors. Their team will guide you through the concept stage of the design ensuring that every regulation in terms of both Planning and Building Controls is met. This ensures that an exceptional build quality is achieved that will add value to the owner’s property if the time comes to sell.

By completing on-site surveys and producing realistic 3d rendered images, every aspect of the project will be considered before the final price is agreed with the Client and the building is passed to the dedicated production team. Their friendly team of experienced and qualified tradesmen will safely and efficiently complete the installation ensuring they exceed the Client’s expectations and leave only once they are completely satisfied with the results. They also build school buildings, glamping pods, holiday lodges, house extensions and would love to help realising your dreams - big or small. Call Creating Places on 01629 734286 for more info

As the summer term draws to a close, we asked some of our students what the Kip Effect had done for them. Their answers surprised us! We expected a list of things they could now achieve and what they were better and more confident at, but all those we asked said things about the difference in parts of their lives, particularly social lives, that we hadn’t considered as a benefit before. At Kip we measure things in terms of academic progress, but our students find it is more about which table they sit on for maths, which group they are moved into for English and even the realisation that a long held dream of a future career is now actually achievable. Young people want to ‘belong’ to a group, to identify with the ‘cool’ kids in the class, or simply to have a solid group of friends to hang out with and be accepted by. For many of our students their teachers spot their improvement and move them up in sets or at Primary school to anew table. The impact on their day to day lives is much more profound. Here are some of their stories… Poppy joined Kip 4 years ago. She was 3 years behind in both maths and English. Her confidence was so low that she would often type an answer into the computer and then be too afraid to press ‘enter’, such was her fear of failure. As her confidence and ability improved she found her Maths too easy, and after some negotiations between Kip and the school gradually moved up three sets in Maths. Now she is on target for a ‘B’ at GCSE in Maths and English. In her words… It was great moving up because I was with some of the girls in my year who are really cool! They took up cheerleading and I joined the choir with my new best friend. My mum let me change my hair and my friends and I hang out at weekends. I couldn’t have done it without Kip. I am a new person!

Oliver is in year 10; he started two years ago with a Maths level of year 5. He is now working on material with Sue at Kip that puts him on target for a GCSE equivalent grade ‘C’ next year. He is massively more confident and by his own admission when he came to us, he didn’t mix much with other students. In his words… I really believe I can get a grade good grade next year and I always wanted to be a chef, but needed a ‘C’ in Maths and English. I didn’t think I had a hope of going to college, but now I can start to look and apply for the course I want. I never told anyone my dream because it was just a dream, now I can do it, I know I can. I am mates with a whole new set of friends and we go and do football together at the weekend. I also like music and a couple of the others are starting up a band, so I am asking for keyboard lessons for my birthday. I am a different person from when I first came to Kip. Tom is in year 4 and has some learning difficulties which meant that Maths concepts were difficult for him to get his head around. He would do something with us, and then a few days later forget it all. He got very frustrated and hated going to school. With small group learning with us, he gradually improved and has just done his SATs and is going on to high School in September. In his words… I used to be called names because I was so rubbish at Maths and stuff. Now I am on a new table and not the bottom one and I have made new friends. We are going to the High school together in September and I get invited to birthday parties now too!

COMPUTER TIP Malware Protection There has been a lot of press coverage about the recent global attack which crippled many hospitals. The attack itself was nothing new – it encrypts all your files and you are held to ransom if you want them back. The new bit was the means of spreading it. Malwarebytes has long been a great program and the free version allows you to scan and remove infections (and usually speeds up your computer) The paid version only costs around £30pa and will stop the infections getting there in the first place. If you’re prepared to pay for protection then buy this and use a free antivirus program in addition.

For All Your Tiling Needs, Call Beth Although only 11% of manual workers are women, times are changing, and in recent years there’s been an increase in the number of women pursuing careers in male dominated fields. Beth Gratton from Wirksworth set up her own Tiling business a couple of years ago called Beth The Bonnie Tiler. Beth had worked in the health care sector for many years, which she enjoyed, but ultimately she wanted to work for herself and to be more independent. Her boyfriend Adrian is a self employed brick layer and he encouraged her to get started with her own tiling business. In their spare time they’ve both been busy building their own home, so manual work wasn’t a problem for her, Beth also enjoy’s being creative and is very practical, so tiling became a good choice for her new career. Gone are the days when everyone had white tiles everywhere, tiling has evolved into more of an art form. Today tiling isn’t limited to the

bathroom or kitchen walls or floors. The range of colours, materials, textures and sizes now available, enables you to choose a design that is a little more personal; something reflective of you own individuality - no matter what the budget. If you require any tiling no matter how large or small give Beth a call or you could visit Beths facebook page to read reviews from her happy customers such as this one below:

“So thrilled with my new floor. Beth has done a brilliant job laying the tiles in my new extension. A great young lady to deal with. Came out to look at the job then sent me the cost within a few hours, no having to chase her up. Messaged me with the time she was arriving and up dated me when she left as I had to go out. A pleasure to deal with. Would highly recommend” Sally Roberts Jan 2017

CONSUMER CHAMPION

thinks you’ve been ‘reckless’ (we can help you with that, btw).

Picking a password

JAMES WALKER – “FIGHTING FOR YOUR RIGHTS” Consumer Champion – the man who helps you resolve your consumer complaints! Password Problems made Painless I get loads of people asking me about fraud these days and how to avoid it. A cynic might say ‘trust people less’ but that’s a bit of a downer. In fact, the best thing we can all do to keep our private information safe is to take a fresh look at the online passwords we use.

How not to do it

Remembering passwords is tough. Believe it or not loads of people go for ‘11111111’, or even ‘password’. And office workers around the land are likely to have used the same password with an ever-increasing number at the end of it when the password change reminder comes up. But I have a lot of sympathy for people who go for easier options. If you’re dyslexic, or just don’t have a head from figures or remembering things, then you’ll struggle with the kind of passwords that security companies recommend. Creating memorable passwords doesn’t have to be hard though. So, let’s keep things nice and easy with a few tips: • Longer is better: it doesn’t have to complicated, but a longer password is much harder to crack. Stick a few of your favourite words together and use capital letters. • Sing it! If you’ve got a favourite song then take the first letter of each word in the chorus. The sequence of letters will be totally random but you’ll know it. Remember not to sing it out loud when in public! • Mix it up. It makes sense to use different passwords for different things – but you don’t want to end up with tons of the things. So why not use different passwords for three separate things: money matters (the most complex password), shopping and leisure.

I asked the team at Resolver about some of the big password fails that they’d encountered over the years and PIN codes provided some pretty wacky examples. One woman had written her pin number on the back of her debit card. Another person contacted us to complaint their bank had repainted the building and he • Use special characters: But make them couldn’t read the code which he’d written on random - ‘@’ instead of ‘a’ is easy for hackers to crack. So, think of a number that you’ll the wall. I’m not making these up! remember and use the character on that key These might seem extreme but lots of us have on your computer. Make sure it’s not a birthday post it notes with our pins written on them in or guessable number though. our bags or wallets. If this gets pinched, it could result in you not getting a refund if your bank

And one last thing to help you stay safe online. You know those quizzes you see on social media? The ones that tell you what Disney character you are or things that guess your age from a picture? Many of them allow the makers to ‘mine information about you – and they can get a surprising amount too. For example, your mother’s maiden name crops up repeatedly on these quizzes – and it’s a key bank identification question too. So, ditch the quizzes! Stick with LOLcats, it’s safer! • Don’t trust your browser to remember your password. Autofilling is a great tool, but You can find out more about your rights browsers are vulnerable to hackers. Even or make a complaint using Resolver for though it’s a bit of hassle, fill in the details free at www.resolver.co.uk. Or view our yourself and delete your cookies when you can.
