Martin Lewis - Christmas No we do not want Christmas songs, goods or fairy lights in September, or October, or even By Martin Lewis November. Chri @moneysavingexpert stmas is on 25 December and that’s where it should stay. Yet, while it is far too early for celebration, it’s never too early for preparation. Many of the key Christmas must-dos to save money only work if you do them early enough. So now we’ve far fewer than 100 days to go, here’s my Christmas (or Chanucah or Eid) savers checklist. Earn 5% cashback on your Christmas shopping If you’re going to be spending for Christmas, you might as well do it on a card that pays you every time you spend on it. The no annual fee AmericanExpress.com Amex Everyday credit card pays 5% cashback on your first three months' spending (maximum £100) followed by up to 1.25% after. Get it now and this falls during the high spend Christmas period. The cashback won’t be paid until a year later, but, then again, that’s a bonus for next Christmas. Set up a direct debit to repay IN FULL each month to avoid the 22.9% rep APR. There’s a full list of options at www.mse.me/cashback, plus an eligibility checker that tells you your odds of getting each card. Agree to not give unnecessary presents Far too many people do tit-for-tat giving, and using the end result is tat. So now’s the moment to agree with friends, family and colleagues to cut back on giving this year. Why not save it for just the immediate family? Too many people end up with goods they’ll never use, so why waste our cash out of some peerpressure filled obligation. And even those who want to be generous to those with less than

them, remember by giving to someone that person often feel obligated to buy back which can do more harm than help. For my full ‘ban Christmas presents’ philosophy, go to www.mse.me/banchristmas Book your train tickets 12 weeks in advance Wherever you’re planning on spending the festive season, if you need to travel by train, book your tickets 12 weeks in advance. That's when most cheap advance tickets launch, giving maximum availability. As we’re closing in on the perfect moment – Christmas and New Year tickets are likely to start selling from the first week in October – keep a look out now. Not saved for it? Start now – then you can split the cost by four A typical family Christmas costs around £820 – a huge amount from one month's salary alone. But if you haven’t started saving yet, there is still time. For example, put £200 aside from your September, October and November’s income, and it’ll spread the cost. Save what you can, but if you really can’t afford to, I’m afraid you’ll need to cut your cloth accordingly. Not used it since last Christmas? Flog it Walk around the house and examine everything – it’s time for your annual personal stock clearance. Many old items can be worth serious cash and if you’ve not used things for a year, whether kids’ toys, prams, coffee makers, mobile phones, gadgets, or even clothes, why not sell them? Have a look on eBay to see if any of your bits are suitable for sale. There are also lots of recycling sites that will pay you for old mobiles and gadgets – just make sure you do your research first to find the one that’ll give you the most. Set up a Christmas cupboard, then POUNCE on the biggest discounts Become a tactical shopper. Work out now what

Please mention The Dales Directory when responding to advertisers

6

Dales Directories Local services you want to buy and then you can pounce on it when there’s a code, voucher or discount that’s cheaper (my weekly email includes the hot ones www.mse.me/tips). Even better, as is part of many MoneySavers' Christmas arsenal, once you by a present, bag it, wrap it, and pop it in a Christmas cupboard. Don't borrow for Christmas - but if you'll do it anyway, ensure it's at 0% Xmas borrowing's a bad idea. Far better to go, er, cold turkey, and have a more austere time (Christmas is just one day, after all). That said, if you'll borrow anyway, at least do it right. The longest 0% spending credit card is Cbonline.co.uk at 26 months or PostOffice.co.uk at 25 months. Although these cards are over two years interest free, before they jump to 18.9% rep APR, aim to clear the card before next Christmas or you just perpetuate the misery. Small cutbacks now can mean big savings Small cutbacks now can save large when there are 90 days, 66 working days and 13 weeks left

until Christmas. So, if you give up a £2 coffee every day at work you’ll save £132, or cut back on an £8 pack of cigarettes every week and it’s £104. I’m not saying you must give up everything completely, but make an active choice: would you prefer the cash at Christmas or the daily treat? Don't use Tesco vouchers for festive food A £10 Tesco voucher is worth just £10 in-store. Yet you can double or triple its value on items in its www.tesco.com/clubcard/deals/ brochure (£10 becomes £30) on gift items such as Goldsmiths jewellery or Merlin annual theme park passes. Plus every few months its 'double-up' scheme gives 2x value year-round on selected items instore and on Tesco Direct, including fragrance, toys and electricals. Tesco won't confirm for sure when it'll next be on, but it's likely to be around the beginning of November.

With a 50+ funeral plan you’ll benefit from: • Peace of mind knowing the arrangements are taken care of in advance • Paying now at today’s prices - saving you money • Reassurance for your family - no uncertainty or difficult decisions • A guarantee of no more to pay for your funeral director’s services • Flexible ways to pay - and choice of plans to suit you • A personal, local service form an independent funeral director.

AUTOBIOGRAPHIES New Jeep Cherokee 2.2 Diesel By Tim Barnes-Clay, Motoring Journalist www.carwriteups.co.uk Twitter: @carwriteups

Jeep is celebrating its most fruitful year in Britain ever. It is a vital market for the company because we Brits buy more Cherokees than anywhere else in Europe or Africa. The American auto maker aims to echo this success in 2016. But how is it going to do it? Well, one way is to give the admired Cherokee line-up more ‘oomph’. So, that’s why the good-looking Jeep is now obtainable with 185hp and 200hp outputs. It offers an appreciably wider spread of pulling power from low revs, giving greater bang for your buck. But it isn’t just about enriched performance, the 2.2 Cherokee oil-burner now offers better fuel economy than the departing two-litre 170hp automatic lump. Available only with Jeep’s smooth changing nine-speed automatic gearbox, and paired to the company’s Active-Drive four-wheel-drive systems, the all new Cherokee 2.2 versions are inundated with equipment.

The range now has more spec as standard, including an electrically adjustable driver’s seat, an automatic anti-dazzle rear-view mirror with built-in microphone and an electric tailgate. Perhaps more significantly, though, all Cherokees score highly with safety – achieving the maximum 5-stars in Euro NCAP’s tough tests. But back to the new engine under the bonnet. It is assembled for our market in the Pratola Serra plant, near Avellino, Italy. Armed with the 4x4 Jeep Active Drive I system, the Cherokee 2.2 MultiJet II 200hp reaches a maximum speed of 127mph. It accelerates from zero to 62mph in 8.5 seconds, has a typical combined fuel consumption figure of 49.6mpg and CO2 emissions of 150g/km. The Cherokee 2.2 MultiJet II 200hp with Active Drive II and low-range has a top speed of 126mph, 0-62mph time of 8.7 seconds, and a combined fuel consumption of 46.3mpg, with 160g/km of CO2 emissions. Finally, Longitude and Longitude+ trim levels are provided with a 2.2 MultiJet II 185hp variant, in combination with 4x4 Jeep Active Drive I and the nine-speed automatic transmission. Prepared in this way, the Cherokee reaches a maximum speed of 125mph and gets from zero to 62mph in 8.8 seconds. Combined fuel economy and emissions are 49.5mpg and 150g/km. Behind the wheel of the quickest diesel – the 2.2 MultiJet II 200hp Limited 4WD automatic with Active Drive I - I found everything rapid enough. Certainly, the more commanding motor is a real step-up from the unit it supersedes. You no longer have to work the engine like a dog to make spirited progress. It is even quite soothing when you’re not pushing the pace. Undeniably, one of the Cherokee's fortes is its ride. For a mid-sized sport utility vehicle (SUV)

with off-road know-how, the Cherokee handles adeptly. The only time you notice the Jeep get a little unsettled is if you throw it in to a bend. Then there is perceptible body roll. The new 2.2 MultiJet II engine certainly places the Jeep Cherokee towards the crest of the midsize SUV class for pace, poise and proper efficiency. It is no BMW X3 but it brings the fight to the likes of Honda’s CR-V – and is sure to put the fabled motor manufacturer on track for even more success in the United Kingdom next year. The Jeep Cherokee range starts at £26,095 for the 2.0 MultiJet II 140hp Longitude FWD manual, rising to £37,995 for the 2.2 MultiJet II 200hp Limited 4WD automatic.

COMPUTER TIP Repairing Your Windows This is not an area that I’d expect a user to embark upon normally but if you do you should be aware of what you could lose… In Windows XP it is possible to boot from a CD and do a repair install. That would put all the system files back as they should be and would repair many problems. All programs and data are left intact. In Windows 7 a repair install could still be done but only if you could boot into Windows normally but at least programs and files were left intact. Windows 8 (and I assume 10) introduced the idea of ‘refresh’ which still kept the data but deleted any programs you’d installed so before doing a refresh make sure you can reinstall and have all the required licence keys!

Dales Directories ~ Restaurant Review

It was just like stepping into a different world, when my partner and I visited Hodgkinsons Hotel in Matlock Bath recently, we both felt like we’d gone back in time and landed in Victorian England. The Hodgkinsons Hotel dates back to the 1770’s and was originally much larger and apparently extended up the parade as far as Charles Restaurant and B&B. From the outside apart from the Georgian façade there is nothing remarkable about Hodgkinsons Hotel, but on the inside it’s full of cosy Victorian grandeur and they even have their own cave system and rooftop gardens. Zoe and Chris Hipwell have been the proud new owners since 2013 when they took over Hodgkinsons Hotel after spending many years travelling around the world with their businesses. On arrival we were warmly welcomed, and shown into the cosy sitting room which had a lovely open fire, we were given the menu to peruse and our order was taken for pre-dinner drinks. I had a small dry sherry and my partner had a bottled beer from Belper called Shottle Pale Ale or SPA for short. The A La Carte menu gives you the choice of either two courses for £26.00, or three courses for £29.00 (not including coffee), we decided to have a starter each and then see how we felt after our main about having a desert as well. I ordered Pumpkin and Pine nut Risotto, and my partner ordered Spicy Parsnip Soup, and for our mains I ordered Coate’s 8oz Sirloin Steak, Mushroom Risotto and Peppercorn Sauce, my

partner ordered Oven Roasted Rack of Lamb with Sautéed Potatoes and a Red Currant Jus. We didn't have to wait long before we were shown to our table in the restaurant; my partner decided he’d stick with beer but I had ordered a large glass of Cabernet Sauvignon (£5.20). Our starters we lovely, my partner really enjoyed the spiciness of his parsnip soup and my risotto was well seasoned, with the sweetness of the pumpkin and the crunchy texture of the pine nuts and the rice was cooked to perfection ‘al dente’. The atmosphere of the restaurant was very pleasant, the background music was tasteful and our waitress Becka was very efficient and friendly. There was a family of seven close by and we could hear all their positive comments about the food. In between courses they surprised us with a blackcurrant sorbet to cleanse the palate. Zoe explained that they source their ingredients locally when they can, and their meat is supplied by Coate’s Butchers in Two Dales who has a great reputation for quality. My partners rack of lamb was a generous size and cooked to his liking and served with crispy sauté potatoes and the red currant jus complimented the lamb perfectly. My steak was also cooked beautifully and the peppercorn sauce was made using the greener type of peppercorns, not the hard black variety which can be a bit harsh, the ‘fresh’ peppercorns were softer and gave the sauce a milder peppercorn flavour which was really scummy. A bowl of fresh steaming veggies was also shared between us.

Well I still had a small space left for desert, but my partner was full so along with two coffees I ordered a Raspberry and Lemoncello Semi Fredo served with Mixed Berry Compote, it was light and fluffy and a good choice to finish my meal with, simply delicious! After our meal we were chatting to Zoe and she offered to show us a couple of the bed rooms and the cave’s, which sounded really interesting. The hotel was once owned in the 1830’s by a wine merchant called Hodgkinson, and he used the caves to store his beer and wine. She told us that we’d missed a great Halloween evening the weekend before and she warned us that there were still a few of the skeletons hanging in the cave’s. The cave system is about 87 meters long with very high ceiling with mineral deposits all over the walls, it was really fascinating and a very spooky space.

We then went upstairs to view two of the rooms, both rooms looked really comfortable and had a lovely feel to them with such great attention detail and from what I could see they were spotlessly clean as well. Since our evening at Hodgkinsons we’ve spoken to lots of people about our meal, and we’re surprised that many didn’t even know where Hodgkinsons Hotel was. Well my partner and I would wholly recommend that you take a visit soon, I promise you won’t be disappointed.

Few parents actually realise the importance and relevance of a minimum of a GCSE Grade ‘C’ in English & Maths to their child’s complete future in life. To young people doing their GCSE’s is just another part of their schooling. They have been through SATS tests and this often appears just another test that they have to take. As parents we support them and hope they do well, but in reality the grade they achieve in Maths or English is the pivotal point in their entire future! For example with a Maths and English grade C or above more employers will consider them for work. Colleges require a minimum of a grade C and often schools require it for sixth form studies and ‘A’ levels. Universities require it for degree programmes whatever their ‘A’ level grades in other subjects.

logical approach to exam questions and how to calm their nerves on the day. At Kip McGrath all their students in their GCSE classes achieved grades ‘A*’ – grade ’B’ in last summer’s exams. Now it is opening the doors to the next tranche of GCSE students wanting to sleep at nights knowing they’ll be able to get the basic grade ‘C’ they require. Often it is a gap in their knowledge, missed sections and a lack of self-belief in their abilities that can let students down, so as well as following the curriculum we deal with those issues as well. We can do a free assessment on your year 10 or year 11 student and give them a place in our expanding GCSE English Language, GCSE English A Grade ‘C’ is pivotal to their lives, their self- Literature and GCSE Maths groups and assure confidence and further opportunities from the their future success and higher earning 16 to around 20, when experience in work or potential for life. A levels will count more than GCSE grades. However many students and their parents take the ‘’cross the fingers and hope ‘’attitude to these all important grades. In larger class groups with teachers doing their best to engage all the students, both those willing to learn and those disruptive few, it is easy for students to be overlooked and not fulfil their potential and once they are done… it is done! The student is ‘marked in an ‘over a C grade’ or ‘under a C grade’ group. Granted there can be retakes but who enjoys those! In these days it can be re-marked, but then there is the anguish of the wait and the hope that it might ‘scrape’ a ‘C’ grade at the end of it. Students who have some ambition for higher education, good apprenticeships or company training schemes should be nurtured, supported and helped through the first educational test of their lives where second place is nowhere. Until it happens we, as parents, don’t know how our child will cope with exam nerves, the required systematic,
