Are You Suffering from Anxiety? The ‘A’ word get’s bandied about a LOT nowadays. I can’t imagine for a moment that my parents generation talked in terms of anyone being ‘anxious’ and growing up in the 1970’s it also wasn’t yet a familiar term. In today’s world though, I challenge you to spend more than five minutes in the popular media, Social or not before you come across the statement that someone or other is ‘suffering from Anxiety’. And as this current pandemic forces people into many situations that they would otherwise flee from, many of us are experiencing what we may describe as Anxiety on a new or epic scale. Now don’t misunderstand me: I’m a therapist who probably deals with Anxiety cases more than any other kind of issue. So I don’t lack understanding and I certainly am not lacking in sympathy. My beef is the mislabelling of what might be called low grade or situational anxiety (let’s call that anxiety with a small ‘a’) and an Anxiety Disorder, which most definitely is deserving of capital letters. So how do you know the difference between the two? The shortest explanation I can give you is that a Disorder brings with it ‘dis-order’. Someone feeling anxious about an upcoming exam, having some sleepless nights and maybe a few tears, then still turning up on exam day is not suffering from Anxiety. They are responding to a real and current or upcoming situation with an understandable level of concern… which in many people’s makeup tends to morph from concern into worry and then from worry to rumination (going over and over something in your head). It’s not pleasant, but it doesn’t last forever and it’s the kind of concern that often leads us towards the things that help - like studying a little harder. And it’s always been useful… back in our ancestors day, being concerned about being eaten by a bear when there were actually bears around, was a helpful state of mind to be in, simply because it made you take care! Someone with an Anxiety Disorder is unlikely to be filled with fear and dread about just one thing (the upcoming exams), they are likely to add this situation into a huge landscape of things that also appear to them as threatening or catastrophic. And the fear generated by the “what if?” thinking around these things will lead to disorder… they may drop out of school to avoid the exams, they may turn to drugs, alcohol or self-harm to try and numb their feelings… they don’t just turn up on the day and do their best to get on with it.
Because when you’re dealing with a ‘dis-order’ standard rational thinking just doesn’t land. So are there other ways we can distinguish between an Anxiety Disorder and plain everyday anxiety (which I am going to label ‘worry’ for the sake of ease)? One way is to check if the thing you’re worried about is in context, that it has some kind of relation to your current life. So being concerned that you might have a car crash when you’ve already experienced one makes some kind of sense. On the other hand, panicking about the thought of being in one when you never have, is just the kind of constructed harmful ‘what if’ thought that is typical of Anxiety. The investment of lengthy time stressing over things that logically are so unlikely to happen is also in Anxiety territory. How much time you spend thinking about this issue is also a clue. When I was doing a daily commute to London, maybe once a week or so I’d be at the edge of a crowded tube platform and one of two thoughts would jump into my head: either “what if this crowd surged forward and I fell into the path of this train?” or an even more macabre one “what if I jumped onto the rails right now?”. Someone with an Anxiety Disorder may use those random thoughts to create an internal story about being suicidal (at worst) or at best, develop such a fear that they refused to take the tube (that dis-order thing again). As it was, I told my ‘internal Narrator’ to shut up and not entertain such unhelpful thoughts. They did come back though: I did have to manage those thoughts and that is 100% normal. It’s surprising how many people I meet who have no concept of having to manage their own thoughts and having let them ‘run free’, wonder why they feel so down! If you sense your thoughts and feelings are irrational and yet it doesn’t feel like you can control them, and they are leading you into dis-order in your life, I’d like to recommend a little book that I often share with my clients to help them make changes. It’s called Stop Thinking, Start Living by Richard Carlson. You’ll find it on Amazon. And if you need some in-person support feel free to get in touch with me.

Featured Artist
Lottie Adams
Lottie Adams is a self-taught lino print artist, with a background in costume making. She moved to Matlock with her young family in 2014 fulfilling their dream of raising their children in this beautiful rural area. Much of Lottie’s inspiration comes from the local landscape and architecture. Lottie creates short runs of between six and twenty prints. Each print is unique as the process allows for slight differences in shade of colour and finish. Some of her work is figurative, but she is not wedded to any particular genre. Her style is unique with an occasional hint of darkness, or the surreal. Using muted but strong colours her work at first glance has the appearance of a water colour painting. This is down to the gradual build up of layers of colour. The process is called Reduction Lino Printing. This is a time consuming and intricate process that cannot be repeated once the print is finished as the surface of the lino is carved away after each print pressing. If you are looking for a piece of local art to brighten up your walls, then take a look at Lottie’s online Etsy shop. She stocks original artwork, digital prints and a lovely range of cards printed on 100% recycled card supplied with 100% recycled envelopes. She is also a member of the Peak District Artisans, follow her Instagram and Facebook pages for the latest info. Lottie is happy to take on commissions and can supply images and testimonials from past customers. There are renovations planned at her house for spring 2021 to turn her outbuilding into a studio space come gallery where she can hold printing workshops. So watch this space, we may be seeing a lot more of this local artist in the years to come. Etsy Shop:

Jo, at Kip, helped me to see that I wasn’t struggling as much as I thought with my GCSEs. Hi I am Amy and I am nearly 15 and in year 10 at school this year starting my GCSEs like so many of you. I missed so much during lockdown and the school closures and it was really bothering me. However, compared to many I am in a good place with my family but I was worrying about my English GCSEs as my spelling is bad and I can never come up with good things to write about. I have a little brother, Kris, he is only 9 and not doing so well at school so my grandma decided to pay for him to go to Kip to try and catch up. He started in the summer as preparation for going back to school and he is doing great. He has already improved his reading, even I can see that. Anyway I have to take him to Kip for his lesson on a Tuesday, which he loves, and while he is in there I sit and wait and do some of my homework. Jo is really nice and often around. She asks me about what homework I am doing and even let me sit at a spare desk once because they had one free to make it easier for me to do my work. A few weeks ago some kids came in and went into their lessons. I could hear loads of laughing and some clapping at one point. I asked Jo what they were clapping for and she said that one of the students had just achieved reading 100 words. From the 15 or so when he first joined in the summer. Kris told me all about it on the way home. The following week I got really stuck on my English and asked Jo for help. After she helped me, she asked how I was getting on with my GCSEs particularly Maths and English. She was so nice so I told her I was not so good at my English and some of the Maths was hard and that I had missed so much I was really
scared I wouldn’t get the grades to get into the 6th form college to do A levels. I want to be a teacher so I have to get good grades for both GCSE English and Maths. Jo said that if I wanted to she could do a free assessment in both subjects and then we could see if I really did have gaps or if it was just because I was only starting in Year 10. As she said, you don’t know everything when you start a subject, it comes gradually until you look back and see how much you know. My parents agreed. I was really scared in case I was really bad at them. I did the tests and Jo sat down and explained that I was actually pretty good in Maths and my English spelling was a bit weak but my overall writing scores were fine. She said that they could help me if that was what was needed but right now I was doing ok. I felt so happy to know I wasn’t behind at all and that if I did get lower marks in the end of year tests or found a particular subject hard to understand they could help me with a few lessons on just that. I don’t think I need it right now but I love knowing Jo is there if I need her in the coming months.
If you think you need help with your GCSE’s why not ask your parents to get Jo to do an assessment for you. Maybe they or your grandparents could pay for it like mine did for my little brother. Good luck! Amy. Call Jo for a free assessment on: 01246 220224 or 01629 56611.
