Solve The Puzzles & Unravel The Riddles @ the Deception Escape Rooms 23 Firs Parade, Matlock DE4 3AS In the Spring of 2018 I attended a friends birthday party at an escape room in Derby, I really enjoyed it especially as we managed to escape the room with only 40 second left! Since that experience I’ve wanted to have crack at another room, on further research I discovered that we have our very own escape rooms here on our doorstep in Matlock! In case you’re wondering an escape room is part of a fully immersive real-life game appropriately called, enough, an "escape room," in which of groups small participants are given a series of riddles, puzzles and clues in order to find a way out of an actual chamber, usually within an hour. team of I recently organised a six to take on one of the rooms at Deception Escape Rooms in Firs Parade Matlock. The room we booked was called ‘Trapped’, in this room you’re immersed in the secret world of Dr Papet. We were all a bit apprehensive as we didn’t know quite what to expect, we needn’t have worried though as on arrival the staff were very welcoming and explained exactly what we needed to know.
needed help to get to the next level we were prompted to ask for clues, despite this extra help our team were defeated, this didn’t seem to bother us though, it just added to our determination to come back another day! The Matlock Deception Rooms were opened in November 2017 by Sam and Tina. They were first introduced to escape rooms by Tina’s niece when they were visiting her in Zealand, Sam and Tina thought N e w they were fantastic fun and started to seek out other ‘rooms’ where ever they went. After a while they found themselves making up their own escape room scenarios and realised that they had the skills needed to start up their own rooms as a business, so they set about finding an appropriate space to house them in. Once they found the venue the first room they created was ‘Trapped’, now they have two more rooms ‘Scarytale’ and ‘Jilted’ and soon to come in 2019 a new escape room experience.
So…..have you got what it takes to tackle these rooms? If so get a team together and test your skills, you can visit their web site www.deceptionescaperooms.co.uk to find out more. Are you stuck for ideas for someone's birthday, why not purchase an After some preliminary brain teasing games escape room voucher for them? in the reception area our team entered the room. The ‘Trapped’ experience started off Corporate Events: Do something different for in Dr Papet’s office, where with no time to your team building days, many local waste we all started to look for clues, I won’t businesses have used the rooms for this give any spoilers away here but suffice to purpose, you can catch up with how they got say that the experience was exciting, scary on by visiting The Deception Rooms web and challenging and the level of props and site, or you could LIKE them on Facebook to attention to detail was brilliant. When we get the very latest news. entered the room we had to work together on various clues, puzzles and riddles to help us to escape. When the staff saw that we

Helen's Trust Homecraft in Crown Square, Matlock, opened its doors in Autumn 2018. All profits raised go to Helen’s Trust a local, Bakewell based charity, but you won’t find the usual run of the mill charity shop here… it’s a charity shop with a big difference! Crafting: Their focus is on crafts and Crafting in the Community and you’ll find a good range of supplies for card making, crochet, scrapbooking, screen printing and many other hobbies. Stocking end of line Create and Craft products such as the Rare Earth and Tattered Lace ranges, you’ll always find a bargain. With their selection of crafts and stockists being extended and added to all the time there’s new and interesting stock being added weekly. Crafts can boost your happiness! All crafters will recognise the satisfying feeling that comes from working on a favourite project. But as well as being loads of fun, did you know that crafting can improve your health and wellbeing, too? Groups such as Derbyshire Carers and Sight Support Derbyshire use the shop to get together to craft or just drop in for that all important cuppa and a chat. They have great volunteering opportunities too if you have a few hours a week to spare...
Helens Trust is a local charity which was set up in 2001 in memory of Helen Lyon who, after batting cancer for some years, passed away at home, as she had wished, she was just 44 years of age. The charity is dedicated to enabling people to remain at home during their last weeks and months. They offer help to people of any age, with a terminal illness, to remain in their own home in the final stages of their illness. What makes Helen’s Trust different is they are able to respond quickly in situations where time is precious. They are also not restricted in the type of help they can provide, offering essential equipment or care, including day and night sits in the home, which gives valuable support, respite and peace of mind for the carers and family, during this difficult time. The service operates in the Derbyshire Dales, North Derbyshire and the High Peak. Their ethos is, that everyone should have the choice to die in the familiar surroundings of the home, if that is their wish. Latest research shows that 63% of people would wish to die at home, however the reality is that only 20% of people actually do. The service is completely free but the charity needs to raise £300,000 every year to continue providing this service, and referrals continue to increase year on year.
Workshops: The Homecraft shop has so much to offer, they run regular workshops covering a diverse range of fun & interesting crafts. Crochet is a weekly favourite and they have regular sessions in Cross Stitch, Card Crafting, Stamping and Screen Printing run by the experts from Create & Craft TV. Other workshops on offer over the coming weeks include Stained Glass, Needle Felting, Stick Weaving, Beginners Quilting and Paper Making. There’s always something to see or do when you call in and their friendly staff are on hand to help and advise wherever they can...
To grow this service and enable them to offer help and assistance to more people in the local area, Helens Trust took the decision to open their first retail venture, a leap of faith in the current climate! Their aim is not only to raise funds for the charity, but also to raise awareness for those who may require their service and for those who may be able to help or support the charity in any way, hence the idea of Homecraft was conceived.
Local Arts: Homecraft has also made a difference by promoting local talent. They offer an eclectic mix of gifts showcasing arts and crafts handmade in Derbyshire (and many in Matlock itself) by local artisans and craftspeople. Unusual and unique gifts from artwork to pottery, glassware to handmade jewellery and textiles, are always available.
Alternatively, if you would like to speak to somebody about our service or would just like more information on Helens Trust go to www.helenstrust.org.uk or call the office on 01629 812759

If your predicted GCSE Maths or English grades are lower than you would like…
Act Now! Did you know there are fewer than 17 weeks remaining before the Summer 2019 GCSE examinations, and that’s not counting the four weeks for holidays, leaving only 12 weeks in total to up your grades? This equates to only 16 hours of tuition time for a weekly session. You need to make a decision now on what grade you need or want, be it top end of the scales or a pass so you don’t do the dreaded retakes!!
then when time permits work your way up the grade scale to add extra points.
Last year’s students at Kip did just that and a predicted grade 5 student could do the grade 5 questions first, then the grade 6 and eventually try a grade 7 in the final few minutes. It saves you from sitting and trying each question and struggling before moving onto the next one. Needless to say if you give us enough time you have the best chance of achieving what you want in the exams in May Here at Kip we are currently averaging a one, and June. but more often a two grade, increase for both Kip isn’t for just the students who have lower Maths and English if you can get to us by the predicted grades than they want, but also for beginning of the January term. COMPUTER TIP Have you been pwned? Before going into details, the answer is that you probably have! This term is used to describe an account that has been compromised by a data breach, i.e. details have been obtained from one of the many services out there that have been broken into like LinkedIn, Facebook, Dropbox and many more. The data which has been ‘discovered’ can include your email address, password and other personal data and you can check all this on the site www.haveibeenpwned.com. A recent email demanded money to keep quiet, claiming to have all the user’s passwords. It even contained one of them as ‘proof’. It was just a scam, of course, and the result of being pwned. More details on facebook or the website.
