BookReview Jo Jakeman Safe House By Emily Eaton- Cool River Café Being a big fan of Jo’s and loving her first book Stick and Stones (you may have read my review in a previous edition of The Dales Directory), I just couldn’t wait to get my hands on a copy of her new release Safe House. To say this book was nerve wracking and full of suspense is an understatement. This is essentially the story of a naïve, desperate in love woman, who serves 10 months after giving a false alibi to her controlling boyfriend. She is released from prison, assumes a new name and moves to a village in Cornwall, hoping for a fresh start. She buys a run down cottage, which she plans to renovate. So, can she really have a second chance at life? What effect has those 10 months in prison had on her? Did she really know what her boyfriend was up to on the night she gave the false alibi? How well do you really know someone? So many questions arise with

this book and you read on through the pages looking for answers. The story is expertly told in the structure of dual timelines and different points of view, which very slowly reveal Charlie and Lee’s back-story. There are some very tense moments, along with lots of interesting characters. I did find myself questioning a lot of people’s motives towards Charlie through out the book. Just as Charlie does (or Steffi as previously known), you can’t help but wonder whether those around her are interested, intrusive, or just plain dangerous. Do they know about her? If so, what do they think and more importantly, what are they going to do? And if they don’t know, what happens when they find out?? I will leave it there, as I don’t want to reveal anything more, which will take away from the suspense and the pure thrill of reading about Charlie. A 2020 must read! You can pick up a copy of Safe House at Cool River Café.

Dales Directories Health & Well Being

Reduce Your Stress with two little words… In the last issue I was talking about stress: the fact that we all have a set bandwidth or capacity for dealing with ‘stuff’. Environment, culture, genetics, personal history … character and personality… these all impact on our ability to ‘cope’ and also how much we can cope with. We can learn techniques to make our capacity more efficient as well as editing what we choose to take on or become involved with. Our unconscious minds act as an automatic pilot, taking care of much of the straightforward stuff in life.. like brushing our teeth or finding the route to work in the morning. This ‘habit centre’ frees up a lot of capacity for us in this way, by allowing us to do things without giving them much, if any thought. Then there are simple tasks of life that need still need our attention; they take up little space. But can still mount up, filling up much of our available bandwidth before we’ve even encountered a high stress moment in life. Add in the rest of our ‘stuff’ and it’s interesting to see how much space we’ve got left before we spill over into the place where I am often meeting people for the first time … feeling overloaded and overwhelmed. So often a person in this position struggles to say “no” to people, tasks or responsibilities. The reasons behind this vary.. maybe they don’t think they have the right to say no… maybe they can’t find the words… or often they don’t want to appear rude or unhelpful. Unfortunately,

saying “yes” to everything is detrimental to what is nowadays called “Self Care’. So how effective a strategy is simply saying “no”? Well often it’s all that’s needed, although you can expect some raised eyebrows when you first try it. I’ve seen the meme, “no, is a complete sentence” in many a social media post, but in reality, very few of us are comfortable with just saying a straight no. Instead you could try one of these simple ‘softeners’ that can help you to accept or reject tasks, responsibilities or invitations on terms that are acceptable to you… that reduce the load or stress. Each version consists of just two tiny words: “Yes, IF…..” or “No, BUT…” Next time we’ll look at a scenario to bring the “No, BUT….” strategy to life. Today here’s a simple example using “Yes, IF….” to add conditions to an acceptance… to suggest terms that make it acceptable and easy (or easier) for us to say yes. Maybe your grandchild kicks up a real stink at bath time (s’cuse the pun!) and it always ends in tears. Your daughter asks if you’ll babysit and whilst you want to say you will, you’re already feeling your blood pressure rising thinking about ‘bath-gate’. So why not try, “Yes, if he can be bathed and in his pyjamas when I arrive, I’ll be more than happy to sit for him”. I wonder, how you could use this this little phrase “Yes, IF….” to reduce your stress this year?

COMPUTER TIP Don’t use an Admin account If your computer is an apple mac or one running linux then almost certainly you are not using an admin account for normal use but if you’re running Windows then you very probably are! This is not a good idea. If you’re using an admin account then installing a new program is easy – it can just happen, but if you’re using a non-admin account (a limited account) then to install anything requires you to enter the administrator’s password. That may sound like a bit of a pain but this extra level of protection means that rogue software cannot be installed without you doing it explicitly. This is far safer. DIY for Beginners Sink Trap Clean-Out: Over time, the sink traps in kitchens and bathrooms become clogged. Disassembling one, cleaning it out and reassembling it will teach you how the pipes go together, while also helping ensure that your sink drains correctly. And if your trap is an old metal assembly, this is a great time to upgrade to PVC. And fair warning: traps collect gunk and grime, so the cleanout home improvement process can be messy and foul-smelling, but the education is worth it! Why it’s a great starter project: Just as faucet repairs are a great way to begin to learn how plumbing works, drain cleanouts are a low-risk, low-cost way to begin understanding drain line structure. What it gives you an excuse to buy: If you didn’t already grab a pair of channel lock pliers for faucet repair, you’ll definitely want to pick some up for this task.

Dreams can come true with a little help from magic dust sprinkled by Kip’s tutors! Jo bumped into Laura’s parents in a cinema queue a few weeks ago and was thrilled to hear that Laura she is on the last lap of her accountancy training and is planning to take things to the next level. One Dream almost achieved, and new dreams on her horizon. Laura’s dreams of becoming an accountant seemed just that …a dream three years ago when she first came to Kip. Her journey began like many others at Kip after the October half term and the first parent/teacher meetings of the year. It had gone well and she had predicted grades of 5 for her GCSE Maths and English but to get an accountancy apprenticeship she needed a minimum of a 6 in both subjects. Laura was distressed and under tremendous pressure. Jo sat down with her and prepared a specific plan for her Maths and English and introduced her to her tutors, Margery and Sue. Over the next few weeks Laura worked her way through those specific topics that were giving her trouble. By the new year Laura was more relaxed and positive having seen her grades improve, but Margery and Sue kept her focussed and helped with her school work as well. Laura came to Kip right through the exam period where she had help with revision planning, time management and exam techniques. Our tutors are very hot on this as many are exam markers in their own right, so they know what to look for to achieve a quick mark increase.

now begin’’. It is a skill that can be learnt and once learnt is an asset for the whole of your life. We are very protective and caring of our students and Laura’s last session was very emotional. Then came the wait. The long summer holiday stretched before us and exam results day crept ever closer. When the big day arrived for Laura… SEVENs and EIGHTs!!! An amazing result for her and her tutors. Once our exam students have finished, life at Kip continues with those students who aren’t sitting exams and new students are always joining the team. Watching our students develop and grow is a great privilege and to see them blossom is a joy. We invariably get told of the exam results but from then on our students move onto the big wide world and it is only by chance that we sometimes hear of the longer term results. Jo was thrilled to meet Laura’s parents once more. They were effusive in their praise for their daughter’s achievements, quite rightly, as it had all seemed just a dream to them all three years ago. Now they looked forward to a daughter in a recognised profession with real job security due to her skills. Soon she would be able to do their tax return they laughed with Jo!

So, if you know someone who has a dream but is feeling overwhelmed by the challenge, bring them to Jo at Kip and let them start their journey together with some real support along the way. They also specialise in exam technique, or how to Call Jo on xxxxxxxxxxxxxx tackle the exam paper when you sit down nervously and the teacher says’’ Turn the paper over, you may
