Our tissue box at Kip could tell you some amazing stories if we let it. It knows that when we see happy tears that makes for happy tissues! Here is one story…Grace came to Kip with her mum towards the end of Reception. Her first year at school had been a tricky one and her confidence was at an all-time low. Mum and Dad had done their best but life was full-on with new twins in the house and any attempts to help had ended in tears, literally.

Sad tissues! Can you believe that after a year in Reception, Grace knew only 10 out of the 26 letters of the alphabet, and she was shaky on some of those so her answers were hit and miss. She had never made the connection between letters and sounds, so reading hadn’t got started in any meaningful way. ‘Phonics’ as a topic just made her quake in her boots. She was starting her reading journey from nowhere!

So how did Jo turn ‘sad tissues’ into ‘happy tissues’ and start Grace’s reading journey? She made a plan which included a focus on individual letters and their sounds, reading, spelling and blends (sounds made using more than one letter). She made a number of flashcards of simple words which, when put together made a sentence. They played lots of rounds of Slap (Jo calling out words and Grace hitting the word with a fly swat) and gradually Grace was able to not only read words herself, but call them out for Jo to slap, which confirmed that she was actually reading them and not just remembering them. This

method is called ‘look and say’ and is an alternative to the phonics method of the school. By doing it this way Grace was able to focus on the shape of simple words such as ‘the’ rather than seeing a jumble of letters and getting into a panic. The final test came when Grace was able to put the cards in the correct order to complete the sentence. By increasing the number of flashcards and the complexity of the words Grace moved onwards and upwards. Her confidence increased massively in only a few weeks to the point where she could move on to the Kip reading programme which uses computer games and matching booklets. She was off!

One school term later… Grace could read simple stories, write simple sentences and had an amazing level of self-confidence on her reading journey. At the end of one session Grace was able to read a short story to her mum. There were tears but

this time they were mum’s! The relief was palpable. Happy tissues! Being a Kip tutor has many rewards, seeing the children improve is just one of them; to see parents’ stress and anxiety replaced with pride and joy is a huge reward too. More happy tissues!

Book your ‘happy tissue’ moment and start your child’s reading journey! Call Jo on 01629 56611 or 01246 220224 for a free assessment!

COMPUTER TIP Good (free) Software Amongst all the bad software out there trying to scam you there are many very good programs. These are some of my favourites:Firefox and Chrome web browsers are good alternatives to Microsoft’s offerings. Avast antivirus is as good as many paid for products. Foxit PDF reader is faster, smaller and better than the Adobe reader. Picasa is great for keeping track of all your photos. 7-ZIP is a good file compression tool and Syncback will make backups a breeze. These are all packages which I generally install on a new computer. They all work well and are free and safe! For more details check out the website.

Mad about railway modelling? That’s great because A2B Model Railways is your local one stop shop, based in The George Centre, North Parade, Matlock Bath, their opening hours are 10:30 am - 5:00 pm Tuesday - Sunday. Model railway enthusiast, Andy Brewin was a primary school teacher for many years, recently though he decided to change tack and try his hand at opening his own model railway shop. As a child his dad shared his enthusiasm with Andy and ever since he’s been fascinated by this miniature world, even going as far as becoming an expert in putting on model railway exhibitions.

online, find something you like and buy on the high street. • Socialise. Shops know they have to adapt or die, so loads of them now have cafes, cake and places to chill. A lot of these spaces are better than most chain cafes and restaurants (and have better views or ambience). Meet friends and family for a chat and a snack in one and keep those tills ringing.

Save the High Street Sad times ahead for some of the shops we grew up with and loved. More and more retailers are going to the wall as a combination of business rates, online shopping and changing tastes leave them in debt and out of time. I’m often asked what I think this means for the high street. Are we looking at boarded up shops and graffiti where once we met and socialised while doing the shopping? What does this mean for our communities? In truth, no-one knows what will happen next. But if you want to fight for your right to shop on the high street, here are a few tips on how to support your local businesses and brands. • Exploit online shops. You can get anything online, but if you’re buying clothes let’s be realistic – often they won’t fit and other goods might not live up to the photo when they arrive. A recent report suggested that half of all goods ordered online were returned. So, do your browsing

making it harder for you to interact with an actual human being and many are actively looking to automate some services and replace other staff with robots. So why not have a monthly or weekly embargo on using online shops. Once you break the habit, it’s surprisingly easy. • Support your local retailer. It’s harder than ever to be an independent shop. I’d love to see the end of extortionate business rates and other unnecessary costs that are driving some to extinction. A good way to show your support for an independent business is to spread the word among friends and family. Peer recommendations are the most important form of advertising. Tell people about the places you love to help keep them in business, mention them on your social media pages, give them a shout out to your mates. • Take out cash and hit the market. Local markets are the lifeblood of many cities and towns. Your fruit and veg are likely to be cheaper bought from there too. It’s a bit of a myth that supermarkets make life

easier for us. They’re often overpriced and a rip-off. Chances are you can get twothirds or your weekly shop from a market in one go – so get haggling! • Check out a collective. Increasingly, shops are banding together to share costs and save on services. This might involve setting up in shared premises, having a collective online website or shopping portal, working together to provide goods and services for one another and many more creative ways to work together. Check online for the collectives near you.
