Martin Lewis ~ Spam It’s an invasion of your home and private time. Spam calls and texts top many people’s list By Martin Lewis of pet hates. @moneysavingexpert There is no perfect way to stop them, but things are improving with the launch of a new text service for mobiles. So here’s my SPAM BUSTER briefing on the latest techniques… How to stop spam calls Landline: Register your number online with the Telephone Preference Service (www.tpsonline.org.uk) or call 03450700707. It’s then a criminal offence for firms to make unsolicited calls to you. It takes around 28 days to start working. If you get a call after that, tell them you’re on the TPS and most legit companies scarper. Mobile: While 85% of people have registered their landlines, only 3% have registered their mobiles. Now a new service allows you to register it by free text. Just message to 85095 with ‘TPS’ and your email address (needed to verify your identity). However, the TPS is only a register for reputable EU companies. Firms from outside the EU, and rogue firms from here may still contact you. And if your number is targeted, the TPS may feel totally ineffective, so see registering as a way to reduce but not stop calls. There are things some people buy to add on to their phone which require callers to select options before being put through – thus getting rid of almost all spam calls. The best of these cost up to £100 so you have to balance just how annoying you find them.

Stop spam texts If a legit company texts you – they offer to let you text STOP so you won’t get any further texts. However, if it’s a spam text don’t reply, don’t text STOP as it can just indicate to them that your number is real and it may target you more. Instead, forward the message for free to 7726 (spells ‘spam’) to your provider – if enough people do it the number is investigated and blocked. You should also always block the number on your mobile too. If you’re still receiving calls/texts after you’ve done the above, you can complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) on 0303 1231113. Give it as much info about the call/text as you can, so it might be able to do something to stop it. I’ve had so many people ask me whether the text they’ve received from a PPI company saying they’re owed £1,000s is legit or not. I’ve even had similar texts myself, and I’m definitely not owed a penny. These texts are spam – they neither mean you’re owed or aren’t owed PPI. It’s just a shotgun approach, spraying messages to everyone in hope of a response. As an aside, if you do want to check if you’re owed PPI, you don’t need to pay anyone. My free template letters available at www.moneysavingexpert.com/ppi will help you do it for free. Stop door knockers Put a no cold-caller’s sign up. I’ve designed a free one you can download, print and stick on your door at www.mse.me/nocoldcallers. If they still knock (political parties and charities especially tend to ignore these), just open the door, point at the sign, and politely close the door.

If they persist, in some cases it’s a criminal offence. Make a formal complaint to the company they’re from and to the Trading Standards via www.citizensadvice.org.uk. - How to stop junk snail mail Addressed mail: To stop unwanted snail mail coming through the letterbox, join the http://www.mpsonline. org.uk and after about four months the bulk of letters should have stopped. Though, unlike the others, it’s a voluntary scheme by a trade association, so those still sending aren’t breaking the law. For anyone who’s been annoyed with a leaflet with my face on it during the referendum, well that was nowt to do with me – it was done without my permission. Unaddressed letters, flyers, and other junk: The Royal Mail has the online door-todoor opt-out system, which means they’ll stop delivering it to you.

You’ll need to print an online form and post it back to ‘Freepost Royal Mail Customer Services’ (search for ‘door to door’ on www.royalmail.com) or phone 03457740740. It’ll take about six weeks for mail to stop and lasts for around two years. You’ll need to opt-out again after this time. But not all junk mail is bad, and this will stop all unaddressed mail, including Government leaflets. Plus, some junk mail can contain some top promo deals, so when choosing if to do these, balance hassle against opportunity. Martin Lewis is the Founder & Editor in Chief of Money Saving Expert. Bonfire Night Can Be a Distressing & Frightening Time For Our Pets. Bonfire Night DO’s… DO keep your pet indoors with windows and doors securely closed. Leave internal doors open so they don’t feel trapped. DO try to sound proof your house – closing windows and drawing curtains. Also provide some background “white-noise” such as the TV, radio or other music. DO ensure your pet has access to a place where he can go and settle if he is distressed by the noise of fireworks. This may be his usual bed but you can also offer an alternative such as a blanket under a table with some of your old clothes. DO take your dog for his usual walk before the fireworks are set off. Feed him as normal as this may help to settle him down for the evening. DO praise your pet when he is calm as this will help reassure him.

Bonfire Night DONT’s… NEVER take your dog to a fireworks display or walk your pet while fireworks are being set off. DO NOT leave your pet alone if he is distressed - just like us our pets, seek comfort in numbers, so your presence will help reassure your pet that he is safe. DO NOT shout at your pet if he has been destructive as a result of distress - this will only upset him more. DO NOT attempt to comfort your dog. By paying attention to their behaviour when upset we can teach them that fireworks are something they really should be frightened of. For severe cases of firework phobia, your vet may advise medications to help. Behavioural modification using a fireworks noise CD and the use of pheromone diffusers are other options that can be effective.

Getting the best for your child at school without feeling like a ‘nuisance’ parent! One of the many challenges of parenting is ensuring that your child gets the best possible chance in education. It isn’t about being ‘top of the class’ just them being ‘top of their potential’. Schools set exams to ‘grade’ children’s ability so that they work at the right level of Maths or English and can progress without undue stress. But what happens when you feel that your child is in a set below their ability? How do you show the school this and get them moved up a Maths set for example? Beginning secondary school is exciting and confusing for many students and most schools don’t allocate year 7 children to sets until after exams towards the end of half term. Jo often hears from parents and children who feel disappointed with the set they are in for Maths or English. The situation is often picked up at the first parent teacher meetings. The parent is told that the child is doing well, and they are, but the parent is hearing from their child that the work is too easy; that friends they had sat on a table with for maths at primary school are in the set above them. The child is frustrated and, while working well, is definitely not pushing themselves. Parents sometimes raise the issue with the teacher but getting them moved up is not always easy. No one wants to move children around too much. The problem is compounded by the work and topics taught in each set being different according to the level. We all know that a grade C in Maths and English is the key to a future of choices in career and jobs so is it any wonder that parents and children want to get the best possible chance at GCSE by being in a higher set?

So what do you do? Get Jo and Kip to help you! Tara was in the second from bottom maths set but had been coming to Kip for some months and was making good progress. She was feeling frustrated because she found her school maths too easy. Her school teacher agreed to consider moving her to a higher set after the end of term exam. Tara again achieved a low maths grade overall because she hadn’t been taught all the topics on the exam but got 98% with material she had studied! Jo and the teacher talked and the teacher kindly sent Jo a list of new topics needed to get Tara to the level of the next set up. Three months later, after working down the list at Kip, Tara had made great strides and by the next exam was able to successfully demonstrate her ability to work at the next level. Since her first move ‘up’, Tara has been moved up again and is on track to achieve a strong grade at GCSE! She is happy, her parents and teachers are happy and Jo is happy to have been able to support the good work being done by mainstream colleagues. A win all round!!

Talk to Jo if you think your child could benefit from being in the next set up. Don’t leave it too late, a grade C in GCSE’s is crucial to your child’s future. Tel: 01629 56611 or 01246 220224 for a free assessment.

Have you broken your false teeth? Despite following your dentists advice about the cleaning and storing of your dentures, inevitable with age your dentures will be susceptible to cracking and breakage. It's not advisable to try and mend your dentures yourself by gluing the broken pieces together, as it could cost you more money in repairs later, so it’s advisable to get a qualified technician to repair them correctly. What to do if your dentures break If your dentures break, you could contact your local Registered Dental Technician(RDT) Barry Appleby from Belper Dental Laboratory based in Strutts Mill, Belper who has many years of experience and is also a Member of the Dental Technologists Association (MDTA). He offers a same day denture repair and cleaning service with a three hour turnaround time, or if your unable to get to his laboratory in

Belper, Barry also offers a collection and delivery service for your convenience as well. Top Oral Care Tips for DENTURES • Don't let dentures dry out – place them in a denture cleanser soaking solution or in plain water when you're not wearing them. Never use hot water, which can cause dentures to warp. • Brush your dentures – brushing dentures daily will remove food and dental plaque, and help prevent them from becoming stained. • Take care of your mouth – brush your gums, tongue and palate every morning with a softbristled brush before you insert dentures. This stimulates circulation in your tissues and helps remove plaque. • If dentures break, don't be tempted to mend them yourself — this can damage them beyond repair, you should either contact your dentist or call Barry Appleby from Belper Dental Lab, Strutts Mill on 07921 266 660

COMPUTER TIP Windows 10 and OneDrive Windows 10 forces a lot of things on the user which the user doesn't always want! OneDrive is built into Win10 with its own node (icon) in explorer and the sync client runs at start up, however you may not want OneDrive, preferring one of the other free cloud servers (or none at all). I can be turned off. When the sync client pops up asking you to sign in, just click cancel and then you can change the OneDrive settings so it doesn’t run at startup, however, the icon will remain in explorer. Removing the icon can be achieved by a simple registry edit, but I don’t encourage normal users to play around in the registry – there can lie disaster! though you can find details on the website and CallOnKen facebook page.
