More about Sally Allsop…..After over 25 years of working in finance roles I took the decision to set up my own business and Allsop Bookkeeping and Payroll Services Ltd was born. I’m aware that lots of business owners wear many hats and some of them spend their spare time doing the books so I offer a chance for them to pass this on and regain their work life balance. Some people think that employing a bookkeeper could be costly but depending on the size of business it might only be a couple of hours a month, and I can include software costs in the price so in some cases this would be a saving. It’s got to be worth a phone call for a free no obligation quote to see just how much it would cost, contact me on 07855 037317 or sally@allsopbookkeeping.co.uk to arrange a consultation.

BookReview Roz Watkins ‘Dead Man’s Daughter’ By Emily Eaton- Cool River Café OMG, if you like fast paced books, that grab you from the first page, you have to read this. I made the mistake of reading the prologue when stood in work and I didn’t have the time to continue. I couldn’t stop thinking about it. How does one author create so many questions from the first page of a book? Incredible! While this book is fast paced and suspenseful, I found it incredibly thought provoking too. The themes of medical ethics and human life are core to this story and give for so much more than a simple detective story. Roz builds the suspense perfectly, giving small nuggets of information: just enough to keep you wanting more. I loved the flawed, conscience crippled character of Meg. I love her impulsiveness and spontaneity, which admittedly lands her in trouble occasionally
but that’s life right? No matter how good you try to be, everyone makes mistakes. Meg is a character that has traits everyone can relate to, which I feel is important to make the character as honest and believable as Meg is. One of the standout features of this book, and indeed of Roz’s writing, is her beautiful descriptions. The beautiful description of the Peak District throughout the book is something to admire. She fills your heads with pictures of places, making you want to venture out your home and discover these places yourself. I personally really want to visit ‘Priests Hole’, just to feel that stomach dropping sensation Meg did. I’m not usually one for reading crime thrillers (I’m a romantic at heart), but something about Roz and this book intrigued me. And after reading The Devil’s Dice, I couldn’t wait to get more of DI Meg Dalton. Dead Man's Daughter is the second novel by Roz Watkins. I actually devoured both books in the space of 4 days and I am already looking forward to another, in what I hope will be a very long-running series? Right Roz? Both Devil’s Dice and Dead Man’s Daughter are available to purchase at Cool River Café.

Look into my eyes… the truth about hypnosis As a qualified hypnotherapist I avoid using the title and even the word ‘hypnosis’, because there are many more misconceptions circulating about what hypnosis is (and isn’t) than truths. And these misconceptions are enough to put anyone off quite frankly. Here’s just a couple of them: • Hypnosis is mind control • Hypnosis sends you to sleep or into a trance So what IS it exactly? Well we’ve all experienced a state of hypnosis many times. When you immerse yourself deeply in something so deeply that everything else fades out a little, then you are in a state of FOCUSED ATTENTION and that’s all that hypnosis is.
‘trance’ and someone who feels nothing but a mild relaxing effect as they listen to the voice of the therapist. One is not better than the other, we just experience things differently. So what about mind control whilst we’re in this state of Focused Attention? Well what are you focusing on? People come to see me in the main because they want to stop doing, thinking or feeling a certain way. And the suggestions that I make whilst they are paying attention in this way, is that the changes they want to see are possible and to harness the power of their imagination to begin to see how that might be and what that might look like and feel like. It’s the first step in making a change.. like a rehearsal for doing or feeling something differently. And in order for these suggestions to be helpful you need to play along - no one can control your mind simply by making a suggestion - you need to agree!
If you have hobbies you’ll know the feeling well.. when you lose track of time as you’re so engrossed in what you’re doing. Watching a film, when someone needs to say our name a couple of times to get our attention because we’re immersed in the story. If you have a particularly active imagination, maybe you sometimes feel like you’re ‘in’ the film, rather than watching it. And that’s the only difference These ‘hypnotic’ suggestions between someone who feels like can convince your mind and they are experiencing a hypnotic body that it’s able to feel differently. It’s helpful
listening to these suggestions when you are in this state because studies show that we are more ‘forgiving’ of repetition when we’re in this frame of mind. If I repeated the same phrase to you over and over when you were in your usual day to day state of mind, it wouldn’t take long before you felt a deep annoyance “ shut up Sarah, I get it… you’ve already told me that!”. Repetition is vital for creating new habits and much of our behaviour is habitual. We might have a stressful day and pour ourselves a glass of wine when we get home. This may have become a habit (habits are things we no longer even have to think about, we just do them) because we chose to respond to work stress in this way time and time again. In order to create new habits we need repetition and this can be kick started by experiencing this new behaviour first in our imagination - enough times that your Mind and Body begin to get the message that you’re serious about this. And then the work can begin.

COMPUTER TIP New Computer? Save money! Recently a client asked if I’d got a reconditioned computer to sell. I’d nothing that was worth having but it did cause me to check out a new (for me) area - that of refurbished computers. If you shop carefully then you can get some extremely good value for money deals. Maybe not the latest spec, but almost certainly as much as you’d need for everyday tasks. Search Amazon (other reputable suppliers are available) for ‘refurbished computer’ and look out for the ‘renewed’ statement – that means it comes with a 1 year warranty. My client ended up with a computer for about a third of the cost of a new one. More details on facebook.com/callonken.

Who would have thought that Kip could have helped my granddaughter at her Beaver Scouts’ colony? When I took my eight year old granddaughter along to Kip some months ago it was because she had been lacking in confidence and ability at school and anticipating herself as a failure in her future. My neighbour’s child had been going to Kip for a while so I thought it time to give it a go for Alison too. We were pleasantly surprised at how thorough the assessment of her reading, spelling and maths was and Jo really understood Alison’s fear of being behind at school and her reluctance to get something wrong. Anyway, now seven months later and her end of term assessment shows she has increased her reading by 2 years, her spelling by one year and most wonderful of all her maths by one year as well. It seems we are gaining on the challenges and she is improving faster than ever, so we will be giving Kip another go next term. What we hadn’t appreciated was the fundamental changes we have seen in Alison, in her confidence and willingness to join in more, even with children she hardly knows. My husband has been a long time Scout Leader so we enrolled Alison in Beavers and although she always said she liked going, her Beaver leader did say she was finding the rough and tumble a bit much and could be a bit stressed at times and quite withdrawn. The scouting organisation is very good at integrating children with all backgrounds and abilities so we weren’t worried. However what we have seen, and her Beaver leader also commented on it as well, was how as Alison’s academic levels have grown, so has her confidence in herself and she has begun to take part more in
the activities, even volunteering to go first on occasion. Now Beavers as you will know is a mixed age range with both boys and girls all from a variety of schools. It is a real mixing pot of the community. Initially Alison hung out with the couple of children she knew from her school, but recently she has really branched out much more. The highlight for all of us, and we are so proud of her, was when she went to a recent Group Scout camp and stayed for her first overnight stay with the other Beavers. She coped so well and the Beaver leader told us she was brilliant helping to settle some of the less confident children as well during the sleepover. She loved it all and was beaming with happiness when we collected her, full of stories of what she had done, like archery, making dens in the woods and suchlike. Who would have foreseen that the timid little girl who went to Kip feeling a failure has now become a confident chatty child with a ‘can do’ attitude to everything in life, including her school work. Her school teachers have commented too. For us it is a massive ‘Thank you ‘ to Kip and Alison’s tutor Sarah. Take your child along to Jo for some Kip sessions and increase their academic ability but most importantly their confidence and belief in themselves. You can’t lose!

Local Model Railway Enthusiast in a Competition on Channel Five this Autumn R e c e n t l y Derbyshire’s newest model shop celebrated its first anniversary. A2B Model Railways in Matlock Bath opened its doors in August last year and has gone from strength to strength and now its owner is set to find himself on the small screen. Andy Brewin is soon to appear as a contestant on the second series of the Channel 5 show “The Great Model Railway Challenge”. The first series proved to be very popular and A2B Model Railways saw an increase in people visiting for advice and products as they were inspired to enter or return to the hobby. The second series of the Great Model Railway Challenge runs for 8 weeks from mid September. It will be aired on Friday evenings at 8pm on Channel 5. The show sees teams of six modellers battling to create a working model railway in just 24 hours. Andy will appear in the fourth heat, due for broadcast in early October, as part of the Titfield Thunderbolts team. The team were made up of complete strangers who met for the first, in April, when pre-filming took place in the A2B Model Railways shop.
The team featured modellers with a range of skills. Andy was charged with making much of the scenery on their heat layout. Throughout the show he was able to demonstrate many of the skills he has used to produce his own model railways. Visitors to the shop can see the result of Andy’s skills with one of his own models on permanent display in the shop. Another layout is also displayed as a work in progress. They offer a key talking point and Andy often refers to them when offering advice to his customers. A2B Model Railways has an ever growing range to support the hobby. This includes Woodland Scenics, Javis Scenics, Gaugemaster and SPD cork products. All of these can be used to create fantastic scenic effects. For those who wish to start out a range of Hornby train sets are available and Hornby, Bachmann and Graham Farish trains are also in stock. Throughout September and October, Andy will be displaying some items from the show in the shop window. These will include some of the models his team used during their initial heat. The shop opens every Tuesday and then Thursday – Sunday from 10.30am – 5.00pm with late opening until 9pm on Saturdays during the illuminations. Why not pop in and see what A2B Model Railways has to offer?

ZERO WASTE SHOPS COME TO MATLOCK & WIRKSWORTH Zero waste shops have become a real force for showing how conscious consumerism can change the way we buy and eat our food. As well as cutting down on pointless plastics and single use packaging, zero waste shopping can help combat food waste as you only buy what you need and help you eat healthier ingredients, and use more environmentally friendly household cleaning products and shampoo’s etc.
what large retailers force you to buy (and possibly waste). Shopping this way is simple to do, empowering to the customer and fun for the whole family to get involved in.
Matlock & Wirksworth now have their own Zero Waste Shops, The Shop @ Sunstone on New Street, Matlock and Wirksworth Zero Waste Shop in the Market Place. They are both independently owned, so you're putting more money back into your local economy and places like this are becoming community centres for like minded people. The Shop @Sunstone is run alongside Sunstone Therapies Clinic where they offer Massage, Reflexology and other holistic treatments. Laura Kirk runs both sides of the business and she’s keen to expand her range of products. The Wirksworth Zero Waste Shop (the shop name hasn’t been finalised yet) is run by Belinda and Sarah, they aim to be open by Christmas. So how does a zero waste shop work? They are huge advocates of reusing over recycling so please bring along any container that you like; a mason jar, jam jar, ice cream tub or lunchbox, if it can be weighed, it can be used! If ever you forget to bring a container of your own, then containers can be purchased from the shop. If you are new to the zero-waste experience and self-serving in general, please don’t hesitate to ask for help and they’ll show you how effortless it is to take back control of your food, getting the amount you need, not To advertise please call 01629 57638 or email sharon@sharonshirleyconsulting.com21
