INTRODUCTION Calgary is the largest city in the province of Alberta, Canada. Alberta borders the United States, with the province of British Columbia to the west, Saskatchewan to the east and the Northwest Territories to the north. Calgary sits within the elevated prairies just east of the Rocky Mountains, where the Bow and Elbow rivers meet. From here, in Alberta’s Grassland region, the prairies begin rolling east through central Canada. Calgary is frequently referred to as the gateway to the dramatic Rocky Mountains. World famous skiing, and the town of Banff, is only a 90-minute drive to the west. With very short summers and a mostly cool climate, Calgary is home to a relatively deep-seated tradition of winter sports. Many Calgarians enjoy activities such as skiing, snowboarding, Luge, and mountain boarding. Now, 34 years after hosting Canada’s first Olympic games. Calgary seeks to bring the Winter Olympics back in 2022.

COLORS Colors play a big part in our visual signature and it is key to choose colors that represent the city in a meaningful way. Calgary is known for its short summers and unusually long winters. Though it is cold for most of the year, most Calgarians keep a warm spirit, not letting the weather keep them from enjoying all that the city and its surrounding patches of nature have to offer. The colors below reflect these considerations with warmer tomes being the main focus and cooler colors to support.

PATTERNS AND DESIGN ASSETS

Inspirations Both the Bow building and Peace Bridge were very influential in creating design assets. The triangular patterns on each are very striking, while the unique shape of the Peace Bridge helped to inspire the curving shapes of the designs. These designs can be iterated in many forms, and can be placed to create various designs.

LOGO

Final Logo The Main logo for the 2022 winter Olympics features a design based on the steel trees as seen in downtown Calgary. The original tree sculptures stand in Banker’s Hall, and is comprised of ten sculptures. Due to the long winters, it is difficult to grow trees in Calgary, the sculptures take the form of stylized trees as a way to replicate the natural forms of nature that can be so difficult to replicate in the city. The logo replicates these trees, with three curving figures utilizing a more organic structure combining the rigid steel visage of the original sculptures with a more natural profile as seen in nature.

Logo Font 05

The chosen font, called Qlassik, is a perfect fit in combination with the curves of the tress. It is a decorative sans serif with slightly rounded letterforms. In addition to Qlassik, a font called Big John was also used to represent the winter Olympics year. This font is more sharp in comparison, keeping with the organic/synthetic contrasting design aesthetic.
