The Prob

blem This chapter focuses on the issues that pertain to the stated problem.

The Problem Cast off clothing in the form of slightly disfigured and deemed unsuitable for sale, and used discarded items with washable stains and slight wear pile up landfills and cover garbage bins. Most of these garments can be re-worn and reused, but due to a still prevalent stigma that used/ slightly disfigured and outdated clothing is not “fashionable” or deems the wearer tacky. With the emergence of DIY culture, refashioned clothing is becoming fashionable, though with a connected stigma of being only created by those that are “crafty” with replicated styles such as ripped jeans, bleached t-shirts and distressed jackets being reproduced out of new fabrics for those that feel it is easier to buy these fashions instead of creating them themselves. This is a huge issue due to it not helping the growing issue of fabrics being wasted and discarded. The further growth of wasted garments due to the fashion industry has been touched upon before, with campaigns and runway shows bringing light to the subject through “Eco” fashion that is usually refashioned out of sustainable or recycled items. The issue with this, however, is that these eco fashions are very unrealistic, being fashioned out of discarded Styrofoam cups or trash bags as a way to visually replicate the growing issue through fashion. These designs are unrealistic to the average consumer and do little in building true change aside from making the audience aware of these issues through a fabricated art form that may ironically be wasted after the show is over.

The Solu

ution This chapter focuses on the main idea to the proposed solution.

The Solution An organization will be created to focus on how secondhand clothing can be utilized and repurposed for high fashion. Showcasing models and celebrities wearing realistic repurposed, reused, and recycled clothing. Similar to how thrift stores like Goodwill and Savers displays their clothing as high-quality fashion that is gently used, but instead, this project will focus on how used clothing can be used as garments of high and trendy fashion, while acknowledging the waste of fabrics in landfills that could have been saved and will be saved if purchased second hand. Prompting the audience to see how we can help our environment by recycling everyday clothing for further use, making more sustainable choices when in need of a “new outfit. ReMode will be an organization focused on recycled, reused, and repurposed clothing in the guise of high fashion or trendy style. They strive to provoke the audience to buy secondhand by providing a website of facts and resources, an application that allows users to buy sell and trade used clothing and a magazine that ties its focus together by presenting fashions and articles focused on eco consciousness with spotlights on resurfacing trends, thrift store shopping, and DIY garment reconstruction.

The De

esign This chapter discusses the design direction of ReMODE (including methodology & limitations) it also displays the chosen color pallet and typefaces to be used for the overall project.

DESIGN OUTLINE Methodology. The project will be stretched throughout an eight-week period, with a focus on gathering resources and information in the first six weeks. During the seventh and eight weeks, designs for ReMODE will be completed compiled within a digital booklet.

Limitations. Though there exists the saying ‘fashion knows no limits’, ReMODE’s focus on the Instant Fashion epidemic and society’s fascination with the latest trends and runway style is meant to show these limitations within the industry. These fashions can cost the wearer thousands of dollars yearly, and are often created in labor intensive factories for a small percentage of what is being charged for these garments. Most of these fashions can be found gently worn in thrift shops and vintage boutiques and can even be sewn for much less than runway price, but it is difficult to persuade the audience to not buy directly from these fashion brands.

Definition of Terms. Eco Fashion: clothing and other goods made from recycled materials or otherwise produced by methods that are not harmful to the environment. Vintage/Retro: Two similar terms with distinct differences. Retro items don't have to be old, they can be brand new, but would have to be made in the style of the time or item they are trying to replicate. So, perhaps the best way to think about the difference between retro and vintage is that vintage refers to the actual construction, whilst retro refers to the appearance. Refashioned: To fashion something again or modify differently.
