La Spezia. Nella terra e nel golfo dei poeti esiste una Città tipicamente ligure ma stretta fra la Toscana e l'Emilia Romagna, una Città meraviglia per i suoi due parchi nazionali, due regionali e un'area marina protetta. Costruita a misura d'uomo, La Spezia vanta diverse curiosità tutte da scoprire passeggiando per il centro storico: le contraddizioni estetiche tra i palazzi liberty e la nuova e contemporanea Piazza Verdi, il belvedere sul lungomare fino al faro o verso il moderno ponte Revel, che conduce al nuovo porto turistico. Una città che sembra nata a cavallo fra Otto e Novecento ma che in realtà nasconde le mura medievali nelle sue alture dove sorge il Castello di San Gorgio. Un museo, oltre che castello, dove sono ospitati i reperti di epoca neolitica ritrovati nei dintorni della città. Nella Via del Prione, che insieme a Corso Cavour e Via Chiodo rappresenta la via per eccellenza dello shopping, si trova il nostro “piccolo Louvre”, il Museo Lia con capolavori di Sebastiano del Piombo, del Tintoretto, di Tiziano e del Pontormo. Insieme al CAMeC – Centro Arte Moderna e Contemporanea – che espone una ricca collezione legata alle principali correnti del Novecento. Una Città al contempo di confine e tipicamente ligure, che con le sue scalinate, i colori pastello, le vie strette e il mercato, racconta la sua storia attraverso il fascino del mare, i profumi e i sapori della sua terra. La Spezia. In the land of the Gulf of poets there is a typical Ligurian town tight to Tuscany and Emilia Romagna, a Town of Marvel for its two National Parks, two Regional Parks and a Marine protected area. People oriented, La Spezia boasts several curiosities worth to discover while strolling through the historic centre: the aesthetic contradictions of the liberty style buildings and the new and contemporary Piazza Verdi, the viewpoint on the waterfront leading to the lighthouse or to the modern Revel bridge, which takes us to the new tourist port: a town that looks as if it was born at the turn of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, but that actually hides Medieval walls in the area where the Castle of San Gorgio is located, a museum, as well as a castle, here you can admire some Neolithic finds found in the surroundings of the town. It is in Via del Prione, which together with Corso Cavour and Via Chiodo, represents the main street for shopping, that our "little Louvre" is located, the Lia Museum, it hosts masterpieces by Sebastiano del Piombo, Tintoretto, Tiziano and Pontormo. Another landmark is the CAMeC - Modern and Contemporary Art Centre - where there is a rich collection linked to the main art movements of the twentieth century. A town that is on border but at the same time it is typically Ligurian, with its stairways, pastel colours, narrow streets and the market, that tell us its history thanks to the charm of the sea, and the scents and flavours of its land. a Spezia Ă¨ una cittĂ della Riviera Ligure di Levante, meta turistica per eccellenza e di recente importante scalo crocieristico, affacciata sul bacino dellâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;Alto Mar Tirreno e al confine con la regione Toscana, sulla destra della foce del fiume Magra.

Con le Alpi Apuane a farle da contrafforte, si trova proprio al centro di un golfo che prende il suo stesso nome , conosciuto anche come “Golfo dei Poeti”, ed è vicina alle Cinque Terre e al Parco Nazionale omonimo, sito dell’Unesco, e a numerosi altri luoghi Patrimonio nell’Umanità, come Portovenere, le relative isole, Lerici con le spiagge di San Terenzo e la città storica di Sarzana. Abitata sin dalla preistoria, a cavallo tra due regioni cardine del turismo made in Italy, è comunque figlia d’arte ligure, con un’influenza genovese che spic-

ca nel tessuto urbano e nelle decorazioni degli edifici di culto, casa altresì di un secolare patrimonio nautico, dovuto in gran parte all’espansione dell’Arsenale della Marina Militare, costruito nel 1860. Sviluppatasi ottimamente grazie alla posizione strategica e al crocevia di piccoli borghi, che sono autentiche perle da visitare, a cominciare dalla seconda metà del XIX secolo, il suo territorio comprende le Cinque Terre, la Valle del Magra, la Valle del Vara e il Levante Ligure della Riviera Spezzina.

a Spezia is a town of the Eastern Ligurian Riviera, a tourist destination par excellence which has recently become a cruise port. It overlooks the Ligurian Sea and borders to the west with the Region of Tuscany and the mouth of the River Magra. ci si innesta nella linea tirrenica nei pressi di Santo Stefano Magra, che funge da casello autostradale. Dalle grandi città del centro, come per esempio Roma, partendo da Via Salaria si seguono le indicazioni sempre per A1, in direzione Firenze, poi uscita A12/E80 verso Genova – Parma, continuando in direzione di La Spezia –Santo Stefano Magra. In sostanza, La Spezia ed il suo centro si collegano alle grandi vie di comunicazione su terra tramite una superstrada di circa 7 km che giunge dal casello di Santo Stefano Magra, punto di intersezione per tutte le autostrade in provenienza da Genova, Milano, Parma e Pisa. Alla fine della superstrada, si accede alla principale Via Carducci, da dove possiamo scegliere di proseguire verso la Litoranea delle Cinque Terre, ovvero la SS 370, o la SS 530 con destinazione il suggestivo borgo di Portovenere. Per quanto riguarda la linea ferroviaria, ci si rifà alla Pontremolese Parma- La Spezia che si inserisce nella Tirrenica di Genova-Roma: la stazione di riferimento è quella di “La Spezia Centrale”. sono treni Intercity in partenza da Milano ogni due ore, e da Termini con scalo a Pisa e a Firenze. In alternativa, è possibile utilizzare i servizi della flotta Freccia. Via mare: Le grandi navi possono sostare nell’ampia rada del Golfo di La Spezia, mentre le barche da diporto provenienti da Sud (Sardegna e Corsica) e da Ovest (Mediterraneo) possono attraccare in pieno centro cittadino nel nuovo Porto Mirabello o, verso Levante, attraccare al Porto Lotti. Dal Molo Italia partono, nei mesi estivi, linee di ferryboat per Lerici, Portovenere, Portofino e Genova. Da La Spezia, Levanto, Lerici e Portovenere, il Consorzio Marittimo Cinque Terre mette a disposizione battelli e motonavi per una gita lungo tutto il levante, a partire da 11 euro. a Spezia è una provincia costituita da più quartieri, evoluti in lunghezza e distribuiti tra la parte prospiciente il molo, con il suo moderno lungomare, e le colline retrostanti, salendo verso la statale panoramica. Città di “strade larghe e case alte e gialle”, come scriveva Ernest Hemingway, da antico borgo marinaro si è ritrovata ad essere polo di importanza internazionale per il turismo di ogni genere e forma. Restando entro i suoi confini, balza all’occhio la cura con cui la La Spezia custodisce il suo materiale storico: nel cuore antico, quello di Via del Prione, ci si imbatte nel Museo Civico Amedeo Lia, che conserva numerosi dipinti e opere d' arte dal XIII – XVIII, immerso nel centro pedonale sede di negozi e boutique, caffè alla moda e panifici a gestione familiare. Passeggiando per queste strade, è godibile e d’impatto l’impronta dei giardini pubblici in stile italiano, vicino alla passeggiata a mare, e quella delle ville del ‘900, ombreggiate da palme, che si incontrano prima di arrivare ai portici di Via Chiodo. Numerose anche le ville in stile liberty, soprattutto dopo Via del Prione, sede dei negozi più trendy, o concentrate in Piazza Sant’Agostino. Il centro fa propri anche i tipici vicoli a serpentina e l’architettura d’un tempo, la quale prosegue accanto alla passeggiata a mare, detta Morin, che s’interrompe verso il grande complesso dell’Arsenale Militare, complice di una radicale trasformazione a partire dal secondo Ottocento, per volontà dei Savoia. Utili per gli spostamenti in loco le stazioni ferroviarie, che danno il nome anche ai quartieri, di Migliarina e Cà di Boschetti. Da visitare il Castello di San Giorgio , imponente edificio fortificato del '600, al cui interno è ospitato il Museo Archeologico Formentini, che raccoglie una collezione di Statue Stele della Lunigiana, reperti, questi, di incredibile valore, provenienti dall’antica colonia Romana di Luni. Seguono a ruota la Chiesa dei Santi Giovanni ed Agostino, i Musei Diocesano ed Etnografico presso l’ex oratorio di San Bernardino, il Museo del Sigillo, unico al mondo, ospitato nella Palazzina delle Arti, il CAMEC, Centro di Arte Moderna e Contemporanea, e la Cattedrale di Cristo Re in Piazza Europa, area rimodernata di recente per venire incontro ai sempre più numerosi sbarchi del Porto Mirabello. Piazza Verdi, a poca distanza, è stata ristrutturata con fontane, panchine, alberi, piante e alcuni particolari archi realizzati dall'artista Daniel Buren, diventando così un giardino al centro esatto della città. Nel 1906 viene aperta la prima rete filoviaria italiana, proprio qui a La Spezia. Il servizio è stato recentemente sospeso avvalendosi di bus a basso impatto ambientale. Il trasporto pubblico è assicurato da ATC esercizio, che si occupa di tutto il territorio comunale e di integrare i percorsi con diverse tratte fino ai vicini comuni dei borghi marinari e di quelli pedemontani. Le linee L e P portano rispettivamente al capolinea di Lerici e a quello di Portovenere, curando le fermate intermedie lungo il centro e la periferia. Il biglietto a tariffa urbana ha un prezzo intorno a Euro 1.50 per la durata di 60 minuti (ma è anche possibile richiederne uno valido per 3 ore con un supplemento) ed aumenta in base alla distanza da percorrere, arrivando a una copertura di 70 km dal centro cittadino. Recentemente è attivo un Servizio Bus Navetta per il centro città che salta le fermate superflue, in partenza dal Parcheggio del Palaspezia, vicinissimo alla fine della superstrada di ingresso in città, e da quello di Piazza D’Armi. Nel periodo estivo, fate attenzione alle modifiche degli orari e studiate, quando possibile, un percorso che preveda lo spostarsi in treno, riducendo così le emissioni di co2 delle vetture e godendo del bel panorama della costa.

It's obvious the care with which La Spezia looks after its historical places,located in the ancient heart of the town, in via del Prione, where we come across the Civic Museum Amedeo Lia, with many paintings and works of art of the XIII, XVIII centuries, the museum is right in the pedestrian centre, with many shops, boutiques, fashionable coffee bars and family run bakeries. Walking along the streets you may enjoy the pleasant Italian style public gardens, right next the seafront promenade and the 1900s villas shaded by palm trees that we meet before reaching the porticos of via Chiodo.There are many Liberty style buildings, especially after via del Prione, the location of trendy shops, other beautiful buildings can be

found in Sant'Agostino square. Its typical winding alleys and the architecture of the past, can be found in the buildings facing the seafront promenade, Passeggiata Morin, which is not far from the Navy Arsenal, that helped the radical transformation of the town in the second part of 1800, as the Savoia family wanted. Useful for travellings are the railway stations, that bear the name of the areas where they are located, Migliarina and CĂ di Boschetti. Worth visiting is the Castle of Saint George, an imposing fortified building of 17th century, which houses the Archaeological Museum Formentini, and a collection of Stele Statues from Lunigiana, these archeological finds are of great importance and value, as they belong to the ancient Roman colony of Luni. Other interesting places to visit are the Church of Saints John and Augustine, the Diocesan and Ethnographic Museum, that was in the past the Oratory of San Bernardino, the Museum of the Seal, a real unique museum which is housed inside the building Palazzina delle Arti, CAMEC, a Modern and Contemporary Art Centre, and the Cathedral of

Cristo Re in Piazza Europa, the area has been recently renovated to meet the needs of an increasing number of tourists that arrive at Mirabello Port. Piazza Verdi is at a short distance, this area has been renovate with fountains, benches, trees, plants and some particular arches made by Buren, it has become a sort of garden in the town centre. The first Italian trolleybus network opened, right here in La Spezia in 1906. The service has been recently replaced by environmentally friendly buses. Public transport is provided by ATC, whose buses run along the entire municipality, including the nearest villages on the coast and those located on the hills. The bus lines L (stands for Lerici) and P (stands for Portovenere), lead to and end in Lerici and in Portovenere, there are several stops along the way. The price of a ticket, for the town centre is 1,50 â&#x201A;Ź and it's valid for 60 minutes, you can also buy a 3 hour ticket, the cost depends on the distance you want to reach, ATC provides a service up to 70 km from the town centre. There is a shuttle service that runs from the parking opposite Palaspezia, not far from the exit of the motorway, there is another shuttle service in Piazza D'Armi. Pay attention to the timetables, in summer, when it's possible take a train to enjoy the landscape of the coast and to reduce Co2 emissions.

ome molte delle cucine liguri, quella spezzina impiega ingredienti poveri, con l’utilizzo sapiente di erbe aromatiche. Il condimento principale è l'olio d'oliva a denominazione di origine controllata, e non mancano i vini sapidi, che sono l’emblema del microclima locale: il Cinque Terre Doc, il Lievantu doc, il Vermentino dei Colli di Luni e lo Sciacchetrà di Riomagiore, più indicato per i dolci. Vi consigliamo di assaggiarlo con una buona zuppa inglese o, in inverno, con una fetta di squisito castagnaccio. Tra i primi piatti il più famoso è senza dubbio la mesciua, una zuppa calda fatta di granaglie e servita tiepida; nell’ordine, si continua con il minestrone alla genovese, una zuppa di verdure a volte passate e con l'aggiunta di pasta di piccole dimensioni, i testaroli, “testi” di pasta serviti con pesto o sugo di pomodoro, a volte con il sugo di noci raccolte fresche, la cappona-

da, fatta con pane del giorno prima bagnato in aceto, acciughe salate, cipolle, pomodori, basilico, capperi e un po' di peperoncino rosso. Le frittelle di farina di castagne di Villafranca e i panigacci di Podenzana, da servire anche loro con formaggi e salumi, sono il top dell’offerta per quanto riguarda gli antipasti. Quello che però non troverete mai altrove, non cucinati con la stessa maestria, sono la farinata di farina di ceci, e gli sgabei, una pasta di lievito fritta e servita coi salumi locali. Inutile dilungarsi sui piatti di pesce squisiti, in primo piano i muscoli – cozze – ripieni o in umido, con la polpa fatta in casa, e le frittelle di bianchetti: qualsiasi ristorante vi potrà offrire un assaggio secondo la sua personale interpretazione della ricetta. Principe dei secondi è il baccalà, fatto con la polenta o nella ver-

sione spezzina, a cui si aggiunge, soffriggendole in un tegame, le bietole e il pomodoro. Cercate al mercato le acciughe di Tramonti, tenere e da mangiare con una spruzzata di limone. Seppie in umido, brodo di naselli, branzino e orata al forno, con gli odori dell’orto, granchi di fosso alla griglia e in umido e totani ripieni – squisiti quelli di Lerici – coronano le portate. ampia insenatura che contiene il Golfo della Spezia, allungata da Lerici fino a Portovenere, vale da sola i percorsi in trekking che passano tra boschi e colline, facili da attraversare anche per i più piccini. Nei pressi dell'Orto botanico di Montemarcello o tra le viuzze dei borghi dell'Alta via dei Monti Liguri, alla Serra o a Pignone, o in bicicletta percorrendo le lunghe piste in riva al mare, dal sarzanese alla Versilia, ci sono momenti di relax per tutti i gusti. Da Tellaro a Lerici, per esempio, i percorsi tagliano tra uliveti, boschi di cedro e prati incolti, mai perdendo di vista il panorama ombreggiato della costa; le Cinque Terre, a una ventina di minuti in auto da La Spezia, forniscono vie più sentieri, da quello classico che va da Riomaggiore a Vernazza, o da Manarola a Volastra, con tappa al bellissimo Santuario della Madonna della Salute. Anche il tour a piedi dell’isola della Palmaria, a Portovenere, è di notevole interesse per gli

appassionati, con partenza dall’imbarcadero della Spezia, in battello. Campiglia, attraversata dalla principali vie escursionistiche della Riviera spezzina, che vanno da Portovenere fino a Levanto, è un must per le serate romantiche: sulla strada collinare, dove un tempo i campigliesi si occupavano dei terrazzamenti, un sacco di sentieri, anche ad anello, portano in diverse aree della zona limitrofa. Meravigliosa l’area marina di Tramonti, raggiungibile con il sentiero del Persico, segnato con il n.11 nella cartina del Club alpino, a partire dalla località di Acquasanta. Nei dintorni, raggiungibili in macchina, subito dopo Campiglia e Tramonti e in direzione di Portovenere, spiccano le vedute di Cadimare, minuscolo borgo di pescatori specializzato nel cucinare ottimo pesce alla brace, e Le Grazie, con un'antica tradizione nell'ambito della cantieristica navale e una piccola baia attrezzata per il diporto delle imbarcazioni.

Nell’entroterra, Pignone a Carrodano, con i boschi e le aree carsiche, Riccò del Golfo, Sesta Godano, Rocchetta di Vara e Bolano, a loro volta con le pievi e i castelli medievali, vecchissimi centri commerciali arroccati tra torrenti e crinali, vi aspettano per condividere atmosfere tipicamente cinquecentesche, in paesaggi rurali dove l’agricoltura è ancora parte preponderante dell’economia. Da Ortonovo e Castelnuovo, scendendo per Santo Stefano, si fa il giro dalla parte opposta dello spezzino, fino a Sarzana, città d’arte famosa per i ritrovi serali e l’impressionante Fortezza Firmafede. Anche se natura e contesti peculiari sono confinati nella periferia, la città di La Spezia conserva molte delle sue attrattive storiche. Da via Chiodo, attraversata da tutte le linee ATC, si può visitare via Prione innanzitutto, lunga e stretta come i tipici carrugi genovesi e ricca di vie secondarie, su cui si affacciano le antiche residenze dei marchesi Doria. Se da poco è stato inaugurato il Porto Mirabello, verso Lerici vi potrete imbattere in un porticciolo altrettanto ricercato, il complesso di Porto Lotti, che non solo è un luogo di posteggio per yatch e catamarani ma, godendo di una posizione privilegiata per raggiungere ogni punto del litorale, diventa facilmente sede di mirabili attenzioni e di grande cultura per gli armatori. Ospita spesso mostre ed eventi, ed è dotato di tutte le strutture. Buono a sapersi: La Spezia è anche sagra, sport e buona musica. A luglio c’è l’Artsenal Festival che ospita personaggi del teatro e della danza fra i più illustri del panorama contemporaneo, richiamando giovani e meno giovani da tutto il Nord Italia, coronato da eventi musicali che andranno avanti fino a estate inoltrata. Si tratta di una gara a remi tra tredici imbarcazioni realizzate a mano da artigiani locali, tredici come le borgate marinare coinvolte in questa secolare tradizione remiera. Il 19 di marzo cade la giornata del patrono spezzino, San Giuseppe, che si festeggia con una fila di bancarelle dislocate per il percorso dei Giardini Storici. Nel percorso, che è assolutamente libero, potrete assaggiare bontà tipiche e non, ma per i veri golosi bisogna aspettare fino a dicembre, quando le migliori specialità gastronomiche del levante vengono convogliate nel Centro Fieristico Spezia Expò (raggiungibile in bus navetta) per una degustazione lunga un sogno. Collegato sempre al Centro Fieristico, il maggior evento commerciale dell’anno per la città di La Spezia è sicuramente la Fiera Campionaria, a marzo, una delle manifestazioni più importanti e che coinvolge una vasta offerta merceologica e dei servizi, con i maggiori brand della città in esposizione. Intorno al periodo natalizio, numerose e suggestive nella provincia sono le sedi per le rievocazioni del Cristo degli Abissi, dove gli elementi di spicco dei corpi scelti della Marina Militare ci incantano con le loro iniziative subacquee. La Spezia consente ai suoi ospiti, oltre a questo, di godere di una stagione autunnale che sfrutta tutti i colori del sottobosco e dell’entroterra, in periodo invernale soprattutto. he wide inlet that contains the Gulf of La Spezia, stretches from Lerici to Portovenere, the easy paths that run through the woods and the hills are worth seeing, and suitable also for families with children. Near the Bothanical Park in Montemarcello or in the alleys of the villages located on the High path of the Ligurian Mountains, in La Serra or in Pignone, cycling or going along the paths by the sea, from Sarzana to Versilia it is possible to find relaxing moments for all tastes. From Tellaro going towards Lerici, for example, the paths cut through olive groves, cedar forests and wild fields, without losing sight of the shaded view of the coast; the Cinque Terre, at twenty minutes drive from La Spezia, provide paths, that go from Riomaggiore to Vernazza, or from Manarola to Volastra, you must stop at the beautiful Sanctuary Madonna della Salute. Even walking along the path on the island of Palmaria, wich is located opposite the village of Portovenere, is very interesting for those who love trekking, you can reach the island by ferry from the pier of La Spezia. Campiglia is crossed by the main hiking routes of the Riviera Spezzina, that go from Portovenere to Deiva Marina, the hilly roads are a must for romantic evenings, once the inhabitants of Campiglia took care of the

terraces, the many trails, even circular trails lead to different neighboring areas. The wonderful marine area of Tramonti, can be reached walking along Persico path, which is marked number 11 on the map of the Alpine Club, the starting point is from the area of Acquasanta. The surroundings can be reached by car, just after Campiglia and Tramonti, going towards Portovenere, Cadimare stands out with its views, it is a tiny fishing village where they cook an excellent grilled fish and the village Le Grazie, that has an old tradition in shipbuilding, there is a small bay equipped for pleasure boats. Inland we find the villages of Pignone and Carrodano, surrounded by woods and karst formation, then Riccò del Golfo, Sesta Godano, Rocchetta di Vara and Bolano, with their parish churches and medieval castles, they are old trading centres perched among streams and ridges, where you can feel the typical atmospheres of the sixteenth century, rural landscapes where agriculture is still a prevailing part of the economy. From the villages of Ortonovo and Castelnuovo, going down towards Santo Stefano Magra, on the other side of the municipality, we find the famous artisitc town of Sarzana, well known for evening gatherings and the amazing Firmafede fortress. Although nature and particular backgrounds can be found in the outskirts, the town of La Spezia still keeps many of its historic charm. Via Chiodo, is crossed by all ATC buses, first of all you can visit via Prione a long and narrow road like the typical Genoese carrugi, with plenty of side streets, that overlook the former residences of the Doria Marquis. This area is 'the shopping heart of La Spezia, with several cheap guesthouses. We then find Piazza Sant'Agostino with the church that beards the same name and Corso Cavour, home of Liberty buildings. Piazza Verdi is in the centre, the Post Office building overlooks the square, in the road above, we find the magnificent Villa Marmori, which is now the Musical Conservatory. In front of Piazza Europa, going up a few steps, we reach the Cathedral of Cristo Re, a superb building with a circular shape, and a dome that overlooks the whole town. La Spezia has recently opened Mirabello Port, going towards Lerici we can bump into another port just as much sought after, Porto Lotti a big area which is not only a berth for yachts and catamarans but with its privileged position, from here you can reach every part of the coast, it attracts the attention and the culture of shipowners. uando si soggiorna a La Spezia, è opportuno non dimenticarsi del contesto fuori dal

mare. Degni di nota i Giardini Storici, aperti al pubblico, un piccolo orto botanico nel cuore cittadino, proprio davanti al centro storico di via Chiodo. Al suo interno, dove non mancano panchine per riposarsi, è possibile ammirare esemplari della flora locale come i cedri odorosi del levante. Per chi non vuole rinunciare al mare, la passeggiata Morin si trova subito lì di fronte, dove aspettano chioschi e punti di ristoro in abbondanza. La stagione migliore per godersi il clima indulgente di La Spezia non è, contrariamente a quanto si pensi, l’estate, ma gli ultimi giorni di primavera prima di questa. Non essendo attrezzata con una spiaggia vera e propria (per i bagni c’è Lerici a dieci minuti e Portovenere ad altrettanti), la città viene vissuta al massimo nei giorni di caldo mite, quando i fiori nei parchi sono un esplosione di colori e le attività commerciali spesso vengono incontro al turista con prezzi ribassati. Lo stesso beneficio del clima si ottiene anche andando verso l’entroterra, nel percorso che costeggia il monte Alpicella per risalire poi sino al monte Gottero, dove si possono ammirare boschi rigogliosi di carpini e betulle e tutta la serie di biodiver-

sità dell’Appennino Tosco Emiliano, imbattendoci persino in anemoni ed orchidee spontanee. Vicino ad Arcola, vi aspetta l’Oasi Lipu di S. Genesio, una delle attrattive maggiori per gli appassionati di bird watching, facente parte del Parco Naturale Regionale di Montemarcello-Magra. Proprio quest’ultimo si occupa di tutelare l'area fluviale comprendente il tratto di fiume Magra che scorre in territorio ligure, dal promontorio del Caprione che, in località Arcola, si spinge verso il mare fino a Punta Bianca: da un lato abbraccia il Golfo di La Spezia ed il mare aperto, dall'altro la foce del Magra, la piana di Luni e le Apuane, in un arco di diciotto comuni tra cui Brugnato, Pignone, Santo Stefano Magra e Sarzana. Immersi nella vegetazione mediterranea, tra macchie di leccio, mirto, imbattendosi nel cisto bianco (Cistus albidus) e nel biancoscpino sul Caprione, di ci si lascia cullare dalla tranquillità delle zone umide, ove nidificano uccelli acquatici, arrivando all'area protetta di Montemarcello, vera gioia per gli occhi. Magnifiche anche le querce da sughero cresciute pressoché indisturbate in direzione delle Cinque Terre. Nel camminare immersi nel verde, a volte i boschi lasciano spazio ai pascoli e alle alture coltivate a terrazze, finendo così, inevitabilmente, per darvi uno scorcio paradisiaco del Parco Nazionale delle Cinque Terre e del suo mare pulito. Attenzione, tuttavia, a non allontanarsi dai sentieri battuti. Il reticolo di sentieri per gli amanti di questo sport è molto fitto e bisogna informasi bene per non rischiare di perdersi.

n piazza Giulio Beverini è possibile fare una visita alla chiesa di Santa Maria Assunta, in realtà più un’abbazia che una chiesa. E’ forse l’edificio di culto più antico di Spezia. Pur avendo subito il bombardamento della guerra e il conseguente rifacimento, non perde niente del suo fascino cristiano, e della tipica architettura ligure: divisa in ampie navate scandite da colonne, e da due più piccole navate minori, la copertura esterna è a volta, con costoloni in pietra grigia su intonaco giallo chiaro, conferendole quell’aspetto “a bande” caratteristico. Simile per età e struttura è la chiesa di Nostra Signora della Neve, ubicata in via Garibaldi, molto più bizantina della precedente e sicuramente più ricca nell’uso dei materiali dell’interno in genere e del pulpito, ad opera di Angiolo del Santo, ripartita a tre navate e con soffitto a cassettoni. Anch’essa decorata a fasce alternate, vi si accede per mezzo di una ampia scalinata. Uno dei tre portali, quello centrale, ha un protiro riccamente decorato. vero e proprio si eleva al fondo della fiancata destra, sulla via Napoli. Nella centralissima Piazza Europa, su una posizione privilegiata, sorge l’imponente Cattedrale del Cristo Re: con una inconfondibile struttura a pianta circolare, protetta da un ampio sagrato, all'interno dodici pilastri delimitano un ambulacro, racchiudendo l'aula centrale che può contenere fino a 2.500 persone. Costruito nel 1929, l’edificio vinse il concorso per la costruzione della nuova Cattedrale, e suo ideatore fu l’architetto Brenno Del Giudice, ma il progetto rimase accantonato fino al 1956, quando venne ripreso e completamente modificato da Adalberto Libera. In sede di realizzazione, l’originale progetto di Libera è stato in parte rivisto da Cesare Galeazzi. Nella cripta a volta sono custodite le reliquie di San Venerio, la tomba della mistica Itala Mela e dei primi vescovi della Diocesi. La Spezia è anche famosa per il suo Museo d’arte Moderna e Contamporanea (CAMeC), ex sede del palazzo di giustizia e riadattato per scenari ed atmosfere alle opere più discusse dell’epoca recente, sito in piazza C. Battisti. Sviluppandosi in altezza e in diversi vani costruiti appositamente per esposizioni e convegni, culmina in due vaste terrazze all’aperto, utilizzate per ospitare le opere in mostra, ma anche per sbirciare la città da una diversa prospettiva. zani e Battolini. Oltre a queste, si ammirano lavori di Jacopo Benassi, Cinzio Cavallarin, Mauro Melis, Monica Michelotti, Ottonella Mocellin – Nicola Pellegrini, Romano Rizzato e Diet Sayler tra i molti. Vengono periodicamente organizzate anche altre esposizioni temporanee. Più piccolo e discreto, e di tutt’altra natura, sulla via Prione si affaccia il museo Amedeo Lia, che prende il nome dal collezionista al quale si devono le maggiori opere donate alla struttura, in esposizione, che spaziano dalle miniature medievali ad una ricca collezione di dipinti seicenteschi. Storico castrum della sezione interna della città, il castello di San Giorgio, con la parte ancora intatta delle sue mura, si impone sull’abitato sopra il colle de Il Poggio, conservando un alone di misticismo proprio delle fortificazioni feudali. San Giorgio è il monumento più emblematico del passato di La Spezia: la sua torre è incorporata alla parte più alta della struttura, che oggi dà accesso solo ad una piccola parte delle fondamenta che furono. Nel 1443, il castello subì delle considerevoli opere di restauro con l’aggiunta di un’ala alla parte inferiore del castello, costruita per l’utilizzo delle armi da fuoco. castello. Il castello ospita inoltre il museo archeologico Formentini (altrimenti conosciuto come Museo del Castello di San Giorgio), un luogo di incredibile importanza in fatto di reperti preistorici, oltre che casa delle misteriose statue stele. Ubaldo Formentini, da cui prende il nome, viene ricordato poichè direttore della Biblioteca e del Museo Civico tra il 1923 e il 1958, protagonista della vita culturale spezzina, fino a diventare massimo promotore della storia e del costume della gente di Lunigiana. Per gli estimatori del genere, in viale Amendola il Museo Tecnico Navale si getta nel passato dell’arte marinaresca, e tiene vivo il ricordo di una città indissolubilmente legata al suo Arsenale con la diretta collaborazione dell'Ufficio Storico dello Stato Maggiore della Marina Militare. Lo scopo della struttura è mantenere vivo il culto delle tradizioni della Marina, raccogliendo e promuovendo informazioni e vestigia del suo passato di gloria. Attraverso una collezione di anfore romane, modelli di imbarcazioni, uniformi d’epoca e reperti pregiati, come quelli di maggior mole tra i quali la poppa della Stella Polare, il MAS di Luigi Rizzo, il Grillo ed altri, in un viaggio nel tempo tra la guerra e i suoi cimeli e la passione dell’uomo per il mare che non ha età, la nuova esposizione tende ad illustrare al visitatore l'evoluzione della nave e dell’arte marinaresca nel corso degli anni, fino a giungere alla nostra epoca. Il museo è dotato, in più, di oltre 150 modelli di imbarcazioni, dai sommergibili alle torpediniere, prototipi di armi subacquee e antichi modelli di armi d’assalto. Ma la vera punta di diamante, a La Spezia, è l’innovativo Porto Mirabello, inaugurato nel settembre 2010 dopo una massiccia opera di bonifica, assieme alla costruzione dei relativi pontili. Lo troviamo nella rada tra la Darsena Duca degli Abruzzi e il Porto Mercantile, cresciuto su una penisola artificiale di 40.000 mq e uno specchio d’acqua di 270.000 mq circa, che mantiene inalterata la costa, valorizzandola e dotandola di ogni confort, completandola con ormeggi per imbarcazioni fino a 100 mt e i larghi moli d’attracco, utili per il parcheggio auto in prossimità del posto barca. L’ingresso, con orario d’accesso continuato, è sul versante est, a ridosso del molo frangiflutti che si sviluppa lungo l’asse ponente-levante, a protezione dai venti dei quadranti meridionali. Il Mirabello offre 407 posti barca, prediligendo un target alto, tutto dedicato ai mega yacht e al luxury style. Mette a disposizione un eliporto per l’atterraggio degli elicotteri, 1300 parcheggi privati e uno staff qualificato per l’attracco e la manutenzione dei natanti ; in sinergia con l’Autorità Portuale di La Spezia sono stai realizzati oltre 700 posti barca per natanti di lunghezza inferiore ai 14 metri, ricavati su 13 pontili galleggianti, situati all’esterno del molo principale. La vicinanza con paesi quali Lerici, Porto Venere, Cinque Terre e Portofino, ma anche alle maggiori isole del Tirreno, lo rende ideale punto di partenza per brevi crociere verso le più affascinanti mete turistiche, toccando Capri, la Costa Amalfitana o lo splendida Porto Cervo in Sardegna. Il complesso è stato realizzato nel totale riguardo della natura e dell’ambiente, e per questo ha ottenuto il riconoscimento della Bandiera Blu 2013 Approdi Turistici.

n Piazza Giulio Beverini you can pay a visit to the church of Santa Maria Assunta, actually it is more like an abbey than a church. The church is probably the oldest religious building of La Spezia. Even if it was bombed during the war, it was subsequently renovated and it hasn't lost its Christian charm, with the typical Ligurian architecture, divided into wide naves with columns on both sides, and two smaller aisles, the outer cover is vaulted, with grey stones on top of the light yellow plaster, with the characteristic stripes. Similar in age and structure is the church of Nostra Signora della Neve, located in Via Garibaldi, it has a Byzantine style, the materials used inside are in general richer compared to the other church, the pulpit was made by the sculptor Angiolo Del Santo. The church is divided by three naves and has a panelled ceiling. The facade is decorated with alternating stripes and the access is through a gate and wide steps. One of the three portals, the central one, has a richly decorated prothyrum. There are two fake bell towers on both sides, the real bell tower is the on bottom of the church, on the right side, in Via Napoli. In the central Piazza Europa, on a privileged location, is the imposing Cathedral of Cristo Re: with an unmistakable circular structure, protected by a wide churchyard, inside there are twelve pillars marking off an ambulator and its central hall, that can hold up to 2,500 people. When the Diocese moved to La Spezia in 1929, it was important to create something that could join the centre of the town with the eastern part, so a competition was called, it was won by the architect Brenno Del Giudice, unfortunately the project was shelved until 1956, when it was completely altered by another architech Adalberto Libera, who understood the potentiality of the new church with its wide square in front, so he decided to emphasized the religiuos area, placing the church yards behind the building, the cathedral is just like a big ring that ideally and phisically joins these areas. The museum has in addition, more than 150 models of boats, submarines, torpedo boats, prototypes of underwater weapons and old models of assault weapons. The real gem of La Spezia, is the innovative Mirabello Port, which was inaugurated in September 2010 after a massive reclamation and the construction of its piers. It is located in the bay,between the docks Duca degli Abruzzi and the Mercantile port, it has an artificial peninsula of 40,000 square metres and a stretch of water of 270,000 square metres; this area has not changed the coast, enhancing and providing every type of comfort, there are moorings for boats up to 100 metres wide and the big docks useful for parking, near the boats. The port is open all day, the entrance is on the east side, near the breakwater which runs along the west-east axis, to protect it from the southern winds. Mirabello Port offers 407 mooring, prefering a high target, mega yachts and luxury style boats. There is a heliport for helicopters, 1300 parkings and a qualified staff for mooring and maintenance; thanks to a synergy with the Port Authority of La Spezia, there are more than 700 berths for boats smaller than 14 metres, on 13 floating docks, located outside the main pier. Being near Lerici, Porto Venere, Cinque Terre and Portofino, but also to the major islands of the Tyrrhenian Sea, makes La Spezia an ideal place for short trips to the most fascinating tourist destinations, such as Capri, the Amalfi Coast or the beautiful Porto Cervo in Sardinia. icca è la storia di La Spezia, senz’altro molto più antica di molte altre cittadine italiane fiorite sulla costa. Peraltro, indubbiamente unica nel suo genere: di come sia nato il suo nome non si hanno fonti certe, piace agli storici ricondurlo alla funzione ospedaliera che poteva rivestire o, molto più probabilmente, visti i suoi commerci, alla presenza della tassa sul sale, elemento principe fra i generi di prima necessità nelle tavole degli aristocratici e che veniva spedito in tutta Europa. Nell’Alto Medioevo, entra sotto la giurisdizione dei vescovi di Luni, signori del Golfo, in lotta con le signorie locali discendenti dagli Obertenghi, Vezzano, Lavagna e Da Passano. L’influenza di Genova comincerà ad imporsi intorno al XII secolo, e solo successivamente La Spezia entrerà a far parte, nel 1273 e dopo una breve parentesi sotto le mire d’ambizione di Niccolò Fieschi, della nuova podesteria di Carpena, fino a diventare sede a sè nel 1343. Al 1407 risalgono gli Statuti del borgo. Qui, La Spezia conosce un altro tipo di popolarità, non meno importante di quella bellica e commerciale: quella del turismo elitario, delle famiglie reali e delle più brillanti menti intellettuali, trasformandosi nell’architettura civile, nell’animo innovatore, nello slancio al futuro. A cavallo tra il primo e il secondo decennio del novecento, La Spezia conosce anche un inusuale slancio artistico, centro del modernismo e di salotti a sfondo futurista; nemmeno la seconda guerra mondiale, con i suoi bombardamenti, riuscirà a minare lo spirito di Spezia, che sulle montagne del Gottero farà valere le operazioni della resistenza partigiana, portando, nei mesi successivi, la libertà alla città prima ancora dell'arrivo degli Alleati. he history of La Spezia is rich and certainly much older compared to many other towns that are along the coast, we can say unique in its kind. As regards the name of the town, there are several opinions about it, the historians believe that it was probably for its hospital role, but perhaps because of its trades and the salt tax, which was a basic necessity in the houses of the aristocrats, as it was shipped throughout Europe. In the Dark Ages, the town was under the jurisdiction of the bishops of Luni, who as lords of the Gulf, struggled against the descendants of the local lords Obertenghi, Vezzano, Lavagna and Da Passano. The influence of Genoa begun around the twelfth century, but only in 1273, after a brief period under the Fieschi family, La Spezia became part of the jurisdiction of Genoa as well as Carpena. After 1371 the town became the administrative seat of the eastern Riviera. The statutes of the town date back to 1407. In 1797 the town was part of the Ligurian Democratic Republic, as per direct decree of the General Napoleon Bonaparte, this started its real economic and demographic development. Napoleon, who had ambitious military plans, understood that La Spezia, with its narrow streets, situated in an environment protected by a gulf, could becone the maritime bulwark of his future empire; after his defeat he celebrated the town as the city with "the most beautiful harbor of the universe ". Almost a century later, with Domenico Chiodo as leader, the project of the Military Arsenal started, this became the feather in the cap of the Navy, with its several hectares, that included nearly thirteen kilometers of inner roads, blended with the city as a real vital offshot, it employed workers, engineers and cartographers. 51

In that period La Spezia acquired another kind of popularity, not less important than the military and commercial sectors, as a place for elite tourism, when the royal families and the most brilliant intellectual minds came here on holiday, the town changed its civil architecture, a soul innovator with an impulse towards the future. Between the first and second decade of the twentieth century, also La Spezia had an unusual artistic momentum, it was the centre of modernism and futuristic cultural gathering backgrounds; not even the bombing of the Second World War, weakened its spirit, as on the mountains of Gottero the partisans resistance helped to free the town before the arrival of the Allies. At present La Spezia is trying to build new infrastructures and to develop its hospitality towards tourists and cautious investors, through services that were not considered important until the end of the second millennium. The new generations understand the importance of a European integration; the economic dash is trying to fill the gaps of the past, to meet new requirements of beauty due to the development of the markets, not just of the real estate sector, but also on a larger industrial scale. Il Forte Umberto I della Palmaria – oggi “Fortezza del mare” – ospita mostre tematiche, convegni, spettacoli ed eventi culturali, mentre sull’isola del Tino, zona militare, è possibile visitare, il 13 settembre, giorno del patrono del Golfo San Venerio, i resti del monastero benedettino di San Venerio e Santa Maria del Tino. Lerici, dall’altra parte dell’ansa che compie il Golfo, con il

poderoso Castello, è fuso con gli stabilimenti balneari e la moderna passeggiata che conduce a San Terenzo, alla Venere Azzurra e al promontorio di Marigola. Prima di imbattervi nei borghi di Aulla e Caprigliola, in quel della Toscana, tappa obbligata al borgo storico di Sarzana, ancora oggi uno dei centri più ricchi e vitali della Val di Magra. Dal lato toscano, l’areale spezzino sarà fresco e rigoglioso anche d’estate, sorprendendo per la ricca varietà di cucina casereccia e i centri medievali ancora intatti. Verso ponente, il mare la farà da padrona acquietandosi in due splendide baie proprie della città di Sestri, quella delle Favole e quella del Silenzio, culle ideali per gli innamorati e i cultori delle piccole cittadine in riva al mare. E se la varietà di paesaggi non dovesse bastare, da La Spezia ricordate che potete accedere con facilità al Parco Nazionale delle Cinque Terre e i suggestivi borghi di Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola e Riomaggiore, perdendovi nella celebre Via dell’Amore e nel Sentiero Azzurro.

Fortess Umberto I on Palmaria island is "the sea fortress" that hosts thematic exhibitions, conferences, shows and cultural events, while the island of Tino, which is a military area, can be visited on September 13, the day of the celebration of the patron of the Gulf, Saint Venerio, here there are the remains of the Benedictine monastery of Saint Venerio and Santa Maria del Tino can be seen. avigando le rotte di Ponente, la “verde” fine delle Terre della Lunigiana storica e della Val di Magra attuale si sublima nell’ “azzurro” inizio di una dolce insenatura naturale che, a guisa di amante, si concede ai suoi due piu’ accaniti spasimanti: il Monte ed il Mare. Avara di spazio e di terra, antica, seppure dall’aria così giovane, questa parte di Costa Ligure è di fatto uno degli angoli più incantevoli e pittoreschi tra le Terre che Vi propone la nostra rivista. Qui esistono, paradossalmente, aspetti geografici unici nel loro genere, che hanno contribuito a scrivere la Storia di questo territorio, e, numerosi, sono i suoi luoghi suggestivi che, nella loro naturale perfezione, hanno ispirato grandi personaggi del passato da Poeti a Diplomatici, da CoPortovenere

mandanti a Grandi Strateghi. Come perla in una conchiglia, protetto dal suo piccolo arcipelago, dalla sua morfologia rocciosa e boschiva, dalle sue fortezze a picco sul mare che ne delimitano i confini, questo lembo di terra si lascia scoprire poco alla volta da chi vuole apprezzarlo in tutta la sua interezza, e non sorprende che “cantori di emozioni” del calibro di Petrarca, Shelley, Byron abbiano sovente decantato i suoi paesaggi. Come per una sorta di estrema gratitudine, è da loro, da questi maestri di versi e di prosa, che il Golfo ha preso il suo nome ed è oggi conosciuto in tutto il mondo come il “Golfo dei Poeti”. Portovenere

Terenzo, Muggiano, Fossamastra, La Spezia, Marola, Cadimare, Fezzano, Le Grazie e Portovenere, con le antistanti isole: la Palmaria, il Tino, e il Tinetto. Tutti luoghi piacevoli e a dimensione umana che, nonostante la rapida urbanizzazione, mantengono il ricordo e soprattutto l’impronta di un passato glorioso e ricco di tradizioni. Sappiamo con certezza che il Golfo dei Poeti fu abitato già in epoca greco-romana, come dimostrano i resti di alcune ville romane nelle località del Muggiano e del Varignano (a ridosso della incantevole baia delle Grazie) ed è interessante poi notare come la sua forma frastagliata abbia dato il nome al suo capoluogo, dal greco Aspra Spithia e Spetzia). Questi luoghi conobbero, nel medioevo, il dominio dei Vescovi di Luni, in costante lotta con le Signorie locali, discendenti dagli Obertenghi e dai Da Passano, e videro il fiorire di un importante movimento monastico sulle isole del Tino e del Tinetto, mentre, al tempo delle Repubbliche Marinare, furono oggetto di contese tra la Repubblica di Pisa e quella di Genova che, a turno, ne fortificarono e ne abbellirono i siti: restano a testimoniarlo maestosi giganti di pietra come il Castello di Lerici e la Chiesa di San Pietro a Portovenere. Poi, dal XIII secolo, l’influenza di Genova prese ad imporsi ovunque, dapprima con il tentativo di Niccolò Fieschi che eresse a La Spezia il centro del suo naissant stato feudale, cingendola di mura e costruendovi il Castello di San Giorgio, e quindi con l’avvento dei Doria che ne sancirono la definitiva appartenenza alla Repubblica di Genova. Il Golfo divenne ufficialmente un importante punto strategico nell’estremo Levante Ligure, e, alcuni secoli più tardi, entrò a far parte della Repubblica Democratica Ligure. Quindi, con la nascita dell’Impero Napoleonico, fu sede di distretto, vivendo un grande sviluppo economico, sociale e demografico. Infine, nel XIX secolo, sotto il Regno Sabaudo, il Golfo cambiò il suo destino territoriale e la città di La Spezia si legò indissolubilmente alla costruzione dell’Arsenale Militare, antica idea francese, portata a termine sotto la gui64

da del Maggiore Domenico Chiodo. Il progetto prese vita nel 1862 e venne terminato nel 1869 e, tutt’oggi, la città di La Spezia ospita uno dei principali arsenali della Marina Militare Italiana. Il Golfo dei Poeti dei nostri giorni è un territorio che ha spazio per ulteriori sviluppi e continui progressi nei settori commerciale, turistico, culturale e gastronomico, che sta incentivando, con investimenti di tutte le proprie risorse. Il suo turismo balneare, prevalente nel periodo estivo, si è gia’ guadagnato alcune bandiere blu per le acque di Lerici e per quelle della Palmaria, mentre, sulla terraferma, il suo turismo ambientale vanta una rete escursionistica unica in Europa, composta di sentieri e palestre di roccia a picco sul mare. Di estrema importanza è il sistema ricettivo, costituito oltre che dai numerosi Hotel ed Alberghi anche da una miriade di Bed&Breakfast, da nuovi e raffinati ristoranti diventati in breve un punto di riferimento delle rinomate guide gastronomiche, dall’indispensabile porticciolo turistico, utile punto panoramico e base del diporto, dai traghetti con rotte e partenze continue dirette alle Cinque Terre, alle Isole, e stagionali verso il Golfo del Tigullio e la Versilia. Se LA SPEZIA è il centro principale ed il cuore del Golfo dei Poeti, i borghi di Lerici e Portovenere sonoi suoi due custodi. Il primo, favorito dalla bellezza semplice del territorio, un vero balsamo per gli occhi, e dalla presenza del litorale sabbioso accessibile a tutti, con molti luoghi di interesse storico e culturale; la seconda dalla sua suggestività unica, oltre che dalla sua storia. Per esigenze di spazio non riusciremo a dare l’importanza che meritano a tutti i Borghi di Mare che costituiscono l’insieme del Golfo dei Poeti e in questo caso la nostra scelta ricade necessariamente su quello a nostro avviso rappre-

characteristic corners among the most beautiful ever published by our magazine. Ironically this area has unique geographic features that have undoubtely contributed to its History, there are many evocative places, that have inspired Poets, diplomats, captains and great strategists, thanks to their natural perfection. Like a pearl in its shell, protected by its small archipelago, with rocks and woods around it, and fortresses overlooking the sea that mark its boundaries, this strip of land can be discovered little by little, by those who will appreciate it in all its aspects, it is not surprising that that poets such as Petrarca, Shelley and Byron have often praised its landscapes. As a sort of great gratitude to these poets the Gulf took the name with which it is internationally known: "Gulf of Poets". Travelling from East to West we find the following seaside villages: Tellaro, Fiascherino, Lerici, San Terenzo, Muggiano, Fossamastra, La Spezia, Marola, Cadimare, Fezzano, Le Grazie and Portovenere, facing the islands of Palmaria, Tino and Tinetto, all very pleasant places, easy to discover, that despite the quick urbanization have kept trace of its glorious past and traditions. We know for sure that the Gulf of Poets was inhabited in the Greek-Roman era, as shown

by the remains of some Roman villas in Muggiano and Varignano (located close to the enchanting Bay of Le Grazie), it is also interesting to notice how its indented shape has given the name to its administrative centre, from the Greek words Aspra Spithia and Spetzia. During the Middle Ages, the territory was ruled by the Bishops of Luni, who constantly struggled against the local Lords, who were the descendants of two important families the Obertenghi and the Da Passano. In the same period there was a flourishing monastic activity in the islands of Tino and Tinetto. The area was then disputed by the Maritime Republic of Pisa and that of Genoa, that built in turn fortresses and embellished the area, the majestic stone castles of Lerici and the church of Saint Peter in Portovenere are just two examples of that period. In the thirteenth century the influence of Genoa prevailed, Niccolo Fieschi built city walls and the castle of Saint George in La Spezia, the area became his new feude, then with the Doria family as rulers, the area was definetely included in the Republic of Genoa. The Gulf officially became an important strategic point in the extreme eastern Liguria, and, a few centuries later, it was part of the Ligurian Democratic Republic. Thus, with the birth of the Napoleonic Empire, it was the seat of a district, experiencing great economic, social and demographic developments. Finally, in the 19th century, under the Kingdom of Savoy, the Gulf changed its territorial destiny and the city of La Spezia was inextricably linked to the construction of the Military Arsenal, an ancient French project that was completed under the guidance of Major Domenico Chiodo. The project of the arsenal started in 1862 and was completed in 1869, at present the town of La Spezia hosts one of the mayor arsenals of the Italian Navy. Nowadays the Gulf of Poets is a territory that could face further developments in many sectors: trade, tourism, culture and food, involving all its resources. Its seaside tourism, at its peak in the summer, has already obtained some blue flags for the waters in Lerici and Palmaria island, while, on the mainland, its environmental tourism boasts a unique hiking network in Europe, with various trails and rock gyms overlooking the sea. 65

sentativo a livello mondiale: PORTOVENERE. Il suo nome deriva da un tempio dedicato alla dea “Venere”, sito esattamente nel luogo in cui ora sorge la Chiesa di San Pietro. Il nome era probabilmente legato al fatto che, secondo la tradizione, la dea era nata dalla spuma del mare, abbondante sotto quel faraglione e, ci piace crederlo, perchè Portovenere è una località bellissima e romantica, un rifugio per cuori ed emozioni. Prendendoci una piccola licenza poetica, possiamo affermare che il suo porticciolo è degno di essere passeggiato solo da chi ha la sensibilità necessaria per farsi rapire il cuore senza paura: tanta è la bellezza del suo mare indomabile, delle case variopinte a ridosso di questo, delle barche e dei gozzi che danzano sulla muta melodia dei flutti, tante sono le emozioni così concentrate che invogliano a restare lì…per la vita. Più imponente e maestoso delle onde del mare è, invece, il Castello Doria, antica fortificazione situata su una altura rocciosa che domina l’intero Borgo. Ma, ancora, vale la pena di vedere le grotte sul mare, posti magici che ancora narrano la storia del luogo con la voce dei secoli, la baia delle Grazie, a poca distanza, un piccolo porto, riparato dalle intemperie del mare, dove la popolazione è sempre stata autoctona, dedita da secoli all’arte della costruzione delle imbarcazioni e della pesca e orgogliosa di un promontorio eccezionalmente suggestivo, sul quale sorge il bastione del Varignano (ora sede del Reparto Speciale degli Incursori 66

della Marina Militare Italiana). In questo luogo si possono assaporare le ricette della tipica cucina locale a base di pesce e crostacei (famose le miticolture) e della tradizione Ligure. Ultima, ma non meno importante, la villa residenziale di epoca romana, costruita alle pendici del colle Muzzerone ed aperta sul mare in un paesaggio di grande bellezza. Ad accomunare tutto questo grandioso contesto popolare ricco di tradizioni, e per ricordarci ogni anno i tempi, belli o brutti che siano stati e che il nostro Golfo ha dovuto passare, la prima domenica di Agosto si celebra sul mare il Palio del Golfo, a cui partecipano e imbarcazioni delle tredici Borgate marinare che si affacciano sul mare. La manifestazione è preceduta da una sfilata folkloristica lungo le vie di La Spezia, con carri allegorici e bande musicali, e dalla pesa delle imbarcazioni. Il giorno dopo, mentre tutta la passeggiata del Molo Morin trattiene il fiato, improvvisamente inizia la gara, con un esplosione di entusiasmo popolare. Dieci minuti di fuoco in cui bisogna percorrere due kilometri e tre giri di boa sul mare per avere in premio la consapevolezza di aver potuto misurare se stessi nella sfida contro l’antico elemento ed esserne usciti vincitori. Il Golfo è in sintesi tutto questo, nella sua mirabolante giostra di colori, odori, sapori e sensazioni, e Vi aspetta per sognare, condividere, gustare, osservare e scoprire un mondo tutto nuovo che non vi aspettereste di conoscere.

La Caletta di Lerici - The Caletta of Lerici

Of extreme importance is the accomodation offer, based not only by the many Hotels, but also by plenty of Bed & Breakfasts, new, quality restaurants which have soon became a landmark of some well known food guides, and its tourist harbour, a useful panoramic place, where ferries leave to reach the Cinque Terre, the Islands, and seasonal departurtues to the Gulf of Tigullio and Versilia. If LA SPEZIA is the main centre, the heart of the Gulf of Poets, the villages of Lerici and Portovenere are like its two guardians. The first one shows a beautiful territory, a true balm for the soul, with a sandy coastline accessible for all people, with many places of historical and cultural interest; the latter for its evocativness, as well as for its history. We will not be able to describe in detail all the seaside villages of the Gulf of Poets, in fact we had to choose one which is internationally known: PORTOVENERE. Its name comes from a temple dedicated to the goddess "Venus", located exactly in the place where the Church of Saint Pietro stands. According to an old tradition, the goddess was born under a stack from the foam of the sea, and we like to believe so, Portovenere is such a beautiful and romantic place, a perfect shelter for lovers and emotions. Taking a poetic license, we can state that its marina is worth a stroll only for people who have the necessary sensitivity to be carried away by the heart without fear: such is the beauty of its untameable sea, its coloured houses built right in front of it, the skiffs that dance following the quiet melody of the waves, so many deep emotions will convince you to stay there ... for good. The Doria Castle, an ancient, majestic fortification located on a rocky hill that dominates the whole hamlet, is more impressive than the sea waves. It is still worth visiting the caves on the sea, such magic places that tell a century old history, Baia delle Grazie, is at a short distance, with its small port sheltered from the sea winds, the local population has worked for centuries building boats and fishing, they are proud of this extremely suggestive promontory, on which stands the bastion of Varignano (at present the premises to the Special Section of the Italian Navy Raiders). In this place you can taste the

recipes of the typical local cuisine based on fish and shellfish (from its well known mythictures) and of the Ligurian tradition. Last, but not least, is the Roman villa, built on the slopes of hill Muzzerone overlooking the sea and surrounded by the great beauty of its landscape. The inhabitants of this amazing popular place have in common its rich traditions, that remind us of the good and bad moments of its past, on the first Sunday in August there is a boat race called Palio del Golfo, thirteen seaside villages of the gulf ,participate to this boat race. The day before the race there is a folkloristic parade along the streets of La Spezia, with allegoric floats and bands, then the weighing of the boats takes place. The next day, while all the spectators on pier Morin are waiting for the race to start, holding their breath, suddenly the race begins, boasts of joy and excitment can be heard from the distance. The race lasts ten intense minutes in which the boats struggle for two kilometers, three laps to reach the buoy in the open sea, where the teams measure themselves against an ancient element, to win the race. In short, the Gulf is all this, an amazing whirl of colours, perfumes, tastes and sensations, ready for you to dream, share, taste, observe and discover a new world that you would not expect to find. 67
