20th Anniversary of the Ministry
of Father John Andersîn St. Seraphim Orthodox Church is a center of Orthodox spirituality, culture, and friendly fellowship in North Texas. Some people drive to the Church from Tyler, Waxahachie, even Wichita Falls. Now, for two decades the person who greets parishioners with a Christ-like smile, offers prayers, teaches of Orthodoxy, and conducts services is Father John Andersîn. By Ludmila Taran. Photo by Serge Taran The Dallas Telegraph came to the Cathedral to celebrate and to pray together with the parishioners on the occasion of Father John's 20th Anniversary of ministry. He shared with us about his two decades of service to the Dallas community.
Catholic. Both my parents are converts. We had a lot of rituals. I was an altar boy. One day I saw a movie about a priest-scientist going to a live volcano. That impressed me. I decided to be a priest-scientist, but I chose to drop the scientist part of it, becoming just a priest – too many years of college to do both. All through the years I always

- Why did you move to our city? – That is where I was needed the most after I finished seminary. It was a good fit for us – for me and my family – and for the parish. - In the last 20 years what was your most memorable event? – It was my service to Christ under Archbishop Dmitri’s leadership. It is more than I could ask for. When I came to Dallas, we did not have such a beautiful Cathedral as we have now. Also, the new chapel is almost ready. Now we have a Women’s Monastery in Kemp. It is all God's work. He stretches us as much as we need.
have parishioners from Australia and Antarctica yet. I have a priest-friend who works in Antarctica. I am jealous. - Do you have relationship with other churches in the area? – We have a great blessing in the clergy and people in our area. We fellowship together. It is hard to mention some names, while not mentioning others. There are several missions from the Cathedral and parishes in other jurisdictions. They are good people and very responsive to the needs of the people. We are good friends with a dozen of churches that started here, in our Cathedral. - Last year we were happy to see you at Arme-
nian Cultural and Food Festival. You spoke with Father Ghevond, a priest of St. Sarkis Armenian Orthodox Church. – The Armenian Church is less than a mile from our house. It is really convenient to come by. We are good friends with Father Ghevond. - Today you and the entire St. Seraphim church celebrate 20 years of your ministry. Do you have plans or a vision for the next 20 or maybe 40 years? – Well, for the next 20 years I sincerely ask everybody's prayers for God's guidance and whatever He has in store for me. - Father John, you have such a great smile. Where does it come from? – From the Lord! www.DallasTelegraph.com/59391 Russian www.DallasTelegraph.com/en/59391 English
- Was it easy for you, an Oregonian, to become a Texan? – I did bring all the trees and waterfalls with me to Texas (at least in my heart), but part of my soul will always be there, in Oregon.
St. Seraphim parishioners celebrate 20th Anniversary of Father John's Ministry - How did you become a priest? – I wanted to be a priest since I was 6 years old. I was born and raised as a Roman

California? – No, I was ordained here, in Dallas. I served all my 20 years of ministry in Dallas, Texas.
- Father John, please tell us about the parishioners of St. Seraphim Cathedral. The Church is people, not a building. How were they helping you during these 20 years? – The people of St. Seraphim Church are close to my heart. We have parishioners from all around the world. It is very Pan-Orthodox. There are Slavic people from the former Soviet Union, people from Eastern Europe, and everywhere else. Well, we don't

The 20th Armenian Festival
is Not to Be Missed! A true jewel of International Dallas is ArmenFest - Armenian Cultural and Food Festival. Thousands and thousands of people come each year to St. Sarkis Armenian Orthodox Church to enjoy the true spirit of Armenia, the finest in food, music, dance, fun, fellowship and faith. Raffi Gostanian, the Chairman of Armenian Festival Committee, reviles some of the highlights of the three-day (October 9, 10, and 11) Festival.
By Serge Taran - Raffi, please, tell us about the tradition of the Armenian Cultural and Food Festival in Dallas. – It began 20 years ago. What we are trying to do is to showcase traditions that we have – the food, the religious
the church. We are always looking for fresh thoughts and new approaches. This person had been to a number of weddings where they had different photo-booth set ups. We will do something similar – individuals or families can come and have a family picture taken, and it will be printed right there on location. It will be a nice opportunity for families and friends to have something to put on a wall at home or at the office, to put it in wallet or on social media.
- Food, music, and dance – it is all nice. We are forgetting the event takes place on the St. Sarkis Orthodox Church premises. Tell us about the spiritual aspect of the Festival. – What I think is very important is the tradition of the church service itself. We have a number of church tours every day of the festival. It has a very interesting spiritual background with religious significances of all the different as-
pects of the church service. Those who are interested are certainly welcome to come inside the sanctuary. Our priest, Father Ghevond Ajamian, will provide a remarkable presentation and explanation of the service itself and will explain why we do things in a certain way. It will not be merely a verbal presentation but will utilize many different senses. During the tour, we will have incenses that are used in actual services. - Now for the third year the Ar menian community is partnering with The Dallas Telegraph newspaper. What is your experience? – We know The Dallas Telegraph is the International newspaper of Texas. The amount of marketing that is aspect, the culture and the art. There are lots of other activities as well. We have different tournaments and lots of activities for children. - This is your jubilee, 20th, Cultural and Food Festival. How different will it be from your festivals 20 years ago? – It will be very-very different, especially the dancing program. We are very fortunate to have an excellent Armenian dance instructor from California. She comes many times during the year on the weekends to teach children and young adults. Therefore, today's dance program is exceptional. Back then, in the 20th century, there was not even a dance program on the program. Another significant improvement is the food that we offer to our Festival guests. - Will you have anything special, new that would be a surprise this year? – Yes. We have some surprises. In the church hall usually we have some tours and displays to introduce Armenian Church, culture and ethnicity. This year we have paintings, tables with Armenian souvenirs, tournaments, fun for kids and we will have something we have never had before. At this time, we want to keep it as a secret. - How can we advertise the event and bring people to it if we keep some sparks as a secret? Give us some clues! – Shall I say it will be more cultural than food-related? It centers on the heritage of the church as we are building a new church building. It will show lots of traditions we have around the church. - I am holding in my hands the ArmenFest-2015 brochure, and I see something new in the program compared to the last year. It is a photobooth. Tell us about it. – This idea was brought in by one of the younger adults of
- Today I was talking to Mikael Mikaelyan, a good friend and trusted business partner as a co-owner of Valley View Dental Clinic, and he told me, in the photo-booth you will have traditional Armenian dress to put-on and to take “historical” pictures. – Indeed, we are trying to have different activities where people cannot only see, taste, and listen to, but also touch and put on. - Seems like you are trying to have ArmenFest2015 as a completely new experience and a family event. Kids will be entertained, teenagers will have fellowship, adults will have fun at the stage and in the food court, even “babushkas” will have something to enjoy. – This is exactly what we are trying to achieve this year. We want to make ArmenFest2015 a whole-family event - fun and safe for all. By the way, we have never allowed alcohol at our festivals. It is a very safe and friendly environment. Kids will have face-painting, hairbraiding, and games. There are also cooking demonstrations and tournaments for “babushkas.” - Many people who attended your festivals in the past, including me and my wife, Ludmila, treasured your Armenian food demonstration and tasting. What will you have this year? – Many people state the food is the main reason they come to our festivals. It is practically impossible to get fine Armenian food with such a variety elsewhere. It is prepared in a very particular way, according to original traditions and recipes. We have a huge variety of food – it is not just chicken or beef plates, we also have lamb. There will be many veggie options. We have literally 60 different types of baked goods. They are amazing.
done is incredible, but to me what is most incredible is that the staff really cares. They don't send just an email or make a phone call and say, “Hey, put an ad in the newspaper.” They come and support the church. They know many of the church members and this type of the personal touch and personal attention is extremely rare. We consider The Dallas Telegraph a true friend, not just some media or marketing partner. - Thank you. See you at the 20th Armenian Festival and hopefully at the 30th, 40th, and beyond. www.DallasTelegraph.com/59423 Russian www.DallasTelegraph.com/en/59423 English

Allies in Youth Development: “Changing Lives, One Child at the Time” In 2011 a University of Texas at Arlington study abroad trip to Russia birthed a deep desire in team members to help children in area orphanages. After meeting some family members of the largest Russian family, with over 50 adopted children, several conversations between Chris Burgin, Founder of Allies in Youth Development, Dr. Tatiana Baeva, Director of Russian Operations, and others led them to seek ways to render change. They set out to encourage and empower Russian university students to help orphans develop life skills in order to escape the existence of poverty and hopelessness that awaits them. The ministry grew into world outreach in just several years. Chris Burgin, Executive Director and Founder of Allies in Youth Development, spoke at “Color Their World” 4th Annual Dinner and Banquet that took place in Dallas suburban. Photo by Serge Taran …A story woven with loneliness, pain and despair can still hold hope and end in joy. Young man’s journey shows that light can come from darkness and

Moldova. Regularly we receive stories of life change because of mentors spending time and speaking words of truth and life. Our Teen Camp experience this summer was amazing and confirmed to us that we are working with the right people that love and care about the orphans in Moldova and are actively seeking to be a part of the solution. This summer we were able to add to our work in Russia with the Orion Orphan Village outside of Moscow and a facility in Elista. We are currently developing contacts in Romania and beginning a new nine-month volunteer project in Pescara, Italy. Yes, we are very busy but the work is fulfilling. And it is all because of you, your prayers, and your generous support that we are able to see these results.
Dr. Tatiana Baeva, Director of Russian Operations of Allies in Youth Development
Call To Action: I love to hear and see stories of lives that have been changed because someone did something. Every year we go and check on our progress, encourage our leaders and explore new growth. This summer it was a whirlwind of travel but it was on this trip that something inside of me changed. I could feel a sense of urgency amongst our partners because they feel like the doors may be closing, and they want to do more while they can. The most disturbing
and boys, are being trafficked into the legal brothels of Germany as soon as they graduate from the orphanage. This information came from an organization that is actively trying to rescue them in Stuttgart, Germany. With our current presence in the orphanages, we have the ability to take immediate action. We can get to these children first and warn them of predators who come calling with empty promises of good jobs in other countries. We are
confident that we are doing the right thing because I see changed lives, and so I have a renewed purpose for our future. We can never back down from this task. We can never give up, even when the world says these children are lost causes. We must work harder and smarter, making sure that these children never feel forgotten. • There is darkness in their lives. We need to deliver light.
Chris Burgin, Executive Director and Founder of Allies in Youth Development, spoke at “Color Their World” 4th Annual Dinner and Banquet that extending a hand to a child in need can reverberate throughout the rest of their lives and the lives of untold others. From the floors of a Russian orphanage to his new home in America to finding and forgiving his birth mother, Douglas Waybourn is an example of human resilience, a product of the power of love and proof that when the right people intervene, the direction of an orphan’s life can change for the good. There are many stories like this one in Texas! Allies in Youth Development – Mission: Adopting a child from Russia, like the Waybourn’s did, is noble and self-sacrificing. As we all know, we can’t adopt from Russia anymore. But that’s not a reason to back down or ignore the problem. We simply have to find creative solutions to help to the orphans in Russia and Eastern Europe. Through Allies, we have found a way by pairing university students that live there with local orphanages to mentor children. At least once a month, these in-country university student volunteers visit the orphanages to deliver birthday gifts, and to provide an entertaining and educational program of skits and games for and with the children. Some of our volunteers have to travel quite a distance just to get to these remote facilities but they do it because they see how much it helps the children! Why It Works: The importance of The Allies program is consistency. There are big companies and state-run programs
same volunteers month after month. The children can create relationships with older mentors, relationships that can have a life long impact. We believe in training our leaders and our other international volunteers to ensure they know how to best speak to children who have been abandoned, including what topics to avoid, how to make the children feel loved and which activities to pursue with the children in order to engage them. We do this through conferences and meetings with trained professionals in that field. Allies
visit to a beauty school or trade school has inspired groups of graduating orphans to continue their education or find employment. If the orphans are able to map out a post-graduation plan before they are released from the orphanage, their likelihood of survival increases dramatically. Success Stories: Douglas’ story is about one child in Russia; but the problem reaches far beyond the Kremlin’s boundaries. It’s a problem rampant in Eastern Europe. It was for this reason in this last year; we

revelation during this trip was the problem of prostitution and human trafficking. To our horror we learned that many Moldovan and Romanian, girls
currently preparing materials that directly address this problem and the warning sound begins now. These graduates will be forewarned and informed about potential traffickers. We will keep helping them plan for their futures with continued studies and gainful employment. Not to mention the network of big brothers and sisters on the outside that will help them transition. We are praying by God’s grace that we will be able to cover all of the orphanages in Moldova. There are only 20, that we can enter, and we believe that the church and university community in that country are strong enough to expand. In addition, we are praying God would provide the resources to go ahead and set up an Allies network in Romania to provide for transportation, event supplies, and stipends for our international volunteer coordinators. We will see what God can do. Conclusion: When I got off the plane in Houston I was
• There is hatred in their lives. We need to deliver love. • There is depravity and poverty lurking at the door. We need to invade with hope. So, we are asking for you to give tonight on behalf of the helpless. They can’t come here to ask so we are asking for them. Become a monthly donor. It really does help us. If you do that already, please prayerfully consider raising it 10 or 20 percent. Sponsor a child in South Ossetia. If you are one of those people that love to bless with a one-time gift please be hilariously joyful in your pledge or giving. We even have The Allies Foundation for those that love to give in perpetuity. It just amazes me how some people can watch a charity infomercial on TV and sign right up but never know where the money goes. I am right here in the flesh with friends that have gone and seen with their own eyes and hugged these children with their own arms. You even heard from Douglas who has first hand knowledge of why this program is important and why it works. We are telling you “it is true” and “it is real”, “you can help” and praise God “you can make a difference”. God has given us a plan and we can answer His mandate from James 1:27 to “help the orphans in their time of distress”. How better to help them than with the words of truth and light, with a way out, a plan, and a future. Will you be someone that they can count on? Will you?
