Personal Testimony to Archbishop

Dimitri's Incorrupt Relics Editorial Note: Vladimir Grigorenko was the iconographer of St. Seraphim's Orthodox cathedral in Dallas and a close friend of Archbishop Dimitri's. He was present both at his funeral and the five days until his burial, and at his exhumation and reinterment on Friday. Yesterday we put Archbishop Dmitri in his final resting place in St. Seraphim Cathedral in Dallas. By Vladimir Grigorenko. Photo by Vladimir Grigorenko I was blessed to be a part of a team, which uncovered Vladika’s earthly remains and transferred them into new coffin to be buried in the crypt of the Resurrection Chapel and probably should offer some comments about these events. It was Archbishop Dmitri wish and our deep desire that he would be buried on the premises of St. Seraphim Cathedral in Dallas. We started to plan that next morning after his departure in August 2011. Unfortunately, we had not enough time to satisfy all the requirements of the city code, which is why the parish decided to bury our beloved pastor at the Restland Cemetery, on the plot owned by the cathedral. The idea was that we would bring his earthly remains to cathedral as soon as a proper burial place would be built. Due to lack of space under the cathedral's foundation, we had to build a memorial chapel adjusted to the cathedral with an underground burial chamber in it. This building process, together with filing all the necessary paperwork and acquiring all the permits, took us a little over four years. We scheduled Vladika’s re-internment for the closest available date. In accordance with federal law as it had been presented

to us by the Restland Cemetery Funeral Director, in order to be moved to the new place, the body of the deceased

would see if we chose to be present. Several people, clergy and laity from different parishes

person has to be transferred to a new sealed coffin by Cemetery employees, who will deliver the body to the Church site. I personally negotiated with the Funeral Director that Church representatives must be allowed to oversee this transition. I have to admit, during this negotiation the Funeral Director (with 25 years of experience) explained to us in details what horrific picture we

throughout the diocese, including myself, were chosen to participate. Dr. Ron Rodriguez, MD, Vladika’s primary physician, was one of them. In the early morning of March 4, when Restland employees opened the concrete vault that contained Vladika’s wooden coffin, I was ready to see all these horrible things I was told about. To our amazement, Vladika’s coffin was found intact amidst the wet at-

mosphere of the sealed vault and was easily opened. The Funeral Director, who was present there in a complete haz-mat mask, stated that she had never seen a nonembalmed body in such a condition after 5 years in the grave, and that she believes it is a miracle. From that moment on, Restland employees stepped

aside and allowed us to do everything we needed. Vladika's body was found incorrupt and covered with several layers of soaking wet vestments. I will not go into much detail here - you can tell a lot from the few pictures attached. His skin was dry but covered with condensed water, his pectoral cross and Panagia are tarnished, and the enamel images are peeling off and destroyed by harsh conditions.

Dallas Has A Saint Archbishop Dmitri of Dallas died in the summer of 2011, and was buried unembalmed, according to Orthodox tradition. On Friday his body was disinterred for transferral to his new tomb in St. Seraphim Orthodox Cathedral in Dallas, which was his own. When the cemetery personnel opened his coffin, they found Vladyka Dmitri incorrupt. By Rod Dreher. Photo by Serge Taran and The Diocese of The South Orthodox Church in America That is to say, his body had not decayed. He has been buried for four and a half years under the Texas ground, and his body looks like it did the day he died. This is a miracle. In Orthodox and Roman Catholic Christianity, it is seen as

a sign that the deceased was, and is, a saint. If you read The Brothers Karamazov, you may remember that whether or not the deceased Elder Zosima was incorruptible was a feature of the narrative. In Dallas today, they found their incorruptible. I don’t suppose a soul who knew Vladyka Dmitri is surprised. I knew him in the last five years of his life. What a dear and holy man he was.

Since we were obliged to transfer the archbishop to a new coffin and the condition of his body allowed it, it was decided on the spot to remove the old vestments and to cover him with a new set. It was done with great reverence, and without any damage to the body. Vladika Dmitri's new coffin was then sealed and transferred to St. Seraphim Cathedral, where

sacraments), the liturgy was reverent and beautiful, and we could worship without being so overwhelmed by anger. After a couple of visits, we received an invitation to a party at the Archbishop’s house, after the

a memorial service was served by the OCA's Metropolitan Tikhon and Bishop Alejo of Mexico, with over 20 priests and a few hundred lay people from all around the USA and Mexico. The next day, after the Hierarchical Divine Liturgy, Archbishop Dmitri's relics were placed for eternal rest in a closed underground chamber in the Resurrection Chapel of St. Seraphim's Orthodox Cathedral in Dallas.

then, and was to those children a kindly grandfather figure. Come see this,” Julie said, pointing to Dmitri among the children. That’s not something we were used to seeing. A short while later, in the kitchen, a Russian and a Ukrainian poured vodka shots for themselves and for me, and raised a toast to the Archbishop. “To Vladyka!” we said, then downed the vodka.

A FEW PERSONAL NOTES: Obviously, I was glad to see Vladika's body incorrupt, but had it been otherwise, it would not affect my opinion about his sanctity at all. The body of St. Seraphim of Sarov, the patron of our cathedral, was corrupted, but it does not change the fact that he is one of the most beloved saints around the world. We all know that an incorrupt body alone is not a reason for glorification. Having known Vladika for 11 years and seeing the fruits of his life in the Lord, I am personally convinced that he is a saint. I believe that there are many more people all over the country who share that conviction. No decision of any group of people, respected (or not) would be able to change that. If his body will corrupt in two, 20 or 200 years (as some may wish), or will start to stream myrrh (as others may desire), my opinion will not change. No one can stop me or anyone else from addressing Vladika Dmitri in prayer, and feeling his response and intercession; the same as many others all around the US feel his love and help. All the pictures I took during the transfer of Archbishop Dmitri's body will be forwarded to the proper Church authorities together with my written statement for consideration. www.DallasTelegraph.com/en/60668 English www.DallasTelegraph.com/60668 Russian

toward the icon and began to pray. It was a family dinner. That’s how it struck us. Archbishop Dmitri, born Robert Royster in Teague, Texas, was the opposite of everything I had come to expect in a bishop. He was humble and kind and gentle. He loved his people, and his people loved him. I remember thinking how good it would be to be led by such a man.

He had an important part in my own coming to Orthodoxy. In the summer of 2005, broken and grieving over years of scandal and corruption in the Catholic Church, my wife and I began attending St. Seraphim Cathedral. We did not intend to convert to Orthodoxy; we simply wanted to be in a place where we could be confident the real presence of Christ was in the Eucharist (Catholic doctrine recognizes the validity of Orthodox

On March 5, 2016, His Beatitude, Metropolitan Tikhon and His Eminence, Archbishop Alejo of Mexico City concelebrated the Divine Liturgy celebrated in conjunction with the reinterment of His Eminence, the late Archbishop Dmitri, at Saint Seraphim Cathedral, Dallas, TX Dormition feast. I felt divided about this. For one, I didn’t want to go to a fancy archbishop’s house. For another, I had had enough of bishops and archbishops, men who had wrecked the Catholic Church. I didn’t want to get mixed up with an Orthodox one. But we went anyway, showing up on a rainy August afternoon at the address on the card. It turned out to be not a palatial residence, but the modest two-story woodframe house behind the cathedral. Could this house, with the paint peeling, really be where the Archbishop of Dallas and the South lives? I knocked on the door, and in we walked, with our kids. The house was jammed with people from the congregation. There were Russians and other Slavs, and Americans too. You could hardly move for all the people. Every inch of counter space in the kitchen was filled with dishes bearing up Russian food. At the far end of one counter was a gorgeous flan, made by Vladyka Dmitri himself. He loved to cook. There he was, sitting at the table, his long, Gandalf beard resting on his black cassock. His eyes twinkled. He greeted us kindly. Later, we watched him remove himself to a side room where kids were playing, sit down on a low couch, and talk to them like they were his own children. He was 82 years old

One day a few years later, after had become Orthodox, we were at Forgiveness Vespers, the preLenten ritual that all Orthodox parishes do in which each parishioner must ask each other for forgiveness, and then offer it in return. Watching that tall, elderly archbishop bow before our three year old daughter Nora and ask her forgiveness — it took my breath away. Nora did not know it at the time, but it was a saint of God who did her that honor. Holy Dmitri of Dallas, pray for us. I am sure that official canonization procedures will soon be underway. What a blessing he was to all of us who knew him. A saint. Our Vladyka. What a gift.

“A saint. Our Vladyka. What a gift.” Meanwhile, the ceiling began to leak in the poor old house. We chose to ignore it, because it was time to bless the food. Everybody became quiet as Vladyka turned

AUTHOR UPDATE: A couple of readers rightly correct me for giving the impression that in Orthodoxy, an incorrupt body is incontrovertible evidence of sainthood. It is not. I am personally choosing to take this as a definitive sign, because I knew Vladyka Dmitri. But doing so is not the way of the Orthodox Church. If he is to be canonized, that will be something for the Church to decide, after much discernment. www.DallasTelegraph.com/en/60708 English www.DallasTelegraph.com/60708 Russian

“Immigrant” Khachkar in Dallas A Real Khachkar (Cross-Stone) Was Made In Armenia From Pink Tuff In 2007, the family of then-17 year old Davit Mouradian was devastated by the loss of their son. The idea of building Davit’s Memorial was born, and various projects were set for implementation simultaneously. Building of a new shrine started in the town of Mughni, Armenia, where locals currently frequently visit to light candles, celebrate a special religious occasion, or simply to pray and burn khunk. There stands the first of the two Khachkars - Davit’s Khach. But it was a project that took three years to complete - both khachkars were carved in this location, but the particular Tuff rock was difficult to locate. By Luso Meeks. Photo by Manan Trevor The idea was to make the second khachkar different from the one standing in Mughni; a unique piece, something being “worthy” of the efforts of transportation, and a rather large piece. The family was adamant – they wanted an over 2 meters carving, all done on a onepiece pink Tuff rock. This required extensive excavation, multiple hit and miss attempts (a couple of early attempts were unsuccessful due to brittle stone and broken pieces), and finally by the end of 2007 they found the perfect piece to start the actual carving. Internationally known Nazeni Gharibyan (a.k.a. Haji Nazeni) designed both Mughni and Dallas Khachkars. The theme was derived from a 16th century Armenian khachkar designs. The actual carver is Andranik, an Armenian church builder. The whole project took over 3 years. Eventually, the base, the khachkar, the flower pot, and the khunkaman (incense burner), were all carved from the same piece of Tuff. Now the question of transportation was being handled, while negotiations with Sparkman Hillcrest began, to actually allow a foreign stone – Tuff – to be

incorporated in their park. Note that Sparkman’s policy is to only allow granite memorials in the park because of warranty and care insurance. It took almost 1 year to negoti-

A Cornerstone of Armenian Identity

By 100 Years Fact Project Some aspects of culture, though, are truly unique expressions. The khachkar, for example, is an authentic Armenian form of art. Made up of the Armenian words for “cross” and “stone” – and therefore often rendered in English as “crossstone” – khachkars fuse together two mainstays of the Armenian identity: the Christian heritage, carved on to the rocks prevalent in the highlands, or sometimes right onto those mountains themselves. Dating from the 9th century AD, the khachkar art form saw its most intricate works

around the 13th century, becoming less popular starting in the late 1700s. The 20th century brought its return and a rather sharp rise in development, especially after Armenian independence. UNESCO, for its part, incorporated khachkars into its Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2010. Khachkars reach 1.5 metres in height, and have an ornamentally carved cross in the middle, resting on the symbol of a sun or wheel of eternity, accompanied by vegetative-geometric motifs, carvings of saints and animals. Khachkars are created usually using local stone and

monument was crated by a French company and transported to Dallas. It was then installed at the Sparkman Hillcrest Park in late 2010. The khachkar is now marked as the only Armenian khachkar in the Park. As the administration has recently changed, the receptionist(s) may not necessarily know where to take the visitors. It is now in the graveyard of Davit Mouradian (son of St. Sarkis Orthodox Armenian Church Parishioners Vah-

ram Mouradian and Inessa Harrell). The family will be happy if the community members pay a visit to this amazing “immigrant” Khachkar. The address of Sparkman-Hillcrest Memorial Park Cemetery is 7405 W Northwest Hwy, Dallas, TX 75225. ate the installation of this khachkar in Sparkman Hillcrest Park. At the end of the year,

The Khachkar: Armenia is not an island by any means. Quite the contrary, the country has been sitting on international crossroads from east to west and north to south for the past few millennia. As a result, besides enduring all sorts of wars and conflicts, the Armenian people have also interacted with a number of cultures, being influenced by much and influencing others in turn. As a natural consequence, many elements of culture echo throughout the region’s peoples, whether it is similarities in forms of music and dance, cuisine, or traditional clothing.

taking into consideration the uniqueness of this artwork, Sparkman Hillcrest’s leadership agreed to incorporate this piece in their park. The crating of the khachkar and its base was also very complex; a group of engineers was invited to “fake” install it in Armenia to ensure that after the transportation to its main location, the pieces would fit and would withstand the harsh Texas weather. Then this 17 ton two-piece

carved using chisel, die, sharp pens and hammers. The carvings are then ground using fine sand. Small breaks and rough surfaces are eliminated by plaster of clay or lime, and then painted. Once finished, the Khachkar is erected during a small religious ceremony. After being blessed and anointed, the Khachkar is believed to possess holy powers and can provide help, protection, victory, long life, remembrance and mediation towards salvation of the soul. Among more than 50,000 Khachkars in Armenia, each has its own pattern, and no two are alike. Khachkar craftsmanship is transmitted through families or from master to apprentice, teaching the traditional methods and patterns, while encouraging regional distinctiveness and individual improvisation. www.DallasTelegraph.com/60704 Russian www.DallasTelegraph.com/en/60704 English

Zurab TSERETELLI, President of the Russian Academy of Art, 2002: “It is especially meaningful that RAC is actively supporting the creativity of the youth. The exhibit “Russia Through the Eyes of Texas Children and Texas Through the Eyes of Russian Children” is a foundation of the long-term friendly relations between our great nations. We will certainly take both of these exhibits to Moscow to display at the Moscow Museum of Modern Art. I send my wishes of great success to the Russian American Center and your Russian Festival in Dallas.” Mikhail GORBACHEV, former Soviet President, 2000: “It is wonderful that RAC exists in such a big state as Texas and promotes dissemination of Russian culture to people in Texas. I hope that in future there will be more centers like RAC in the United State.” www.DallasTelegraph.com/60729 Russian www.DallasTelegraph.com/en/60729 English
