Construction to Commence Immediately on the New Dallas Holocaust and Human Rights Museum as Initial $61M Goal is Met Led by local Holocaust survivors and the Mayor of Dallas, the Dallas Holocaust Museum broke ground on October 10th, 2017, on a new, iconic 51,000 squarefoot museum in downtown Dallas, realizing a 40-year dream that will teach and inspire new generations to advance human rights to combat prejudice, hatred, and indifference. By Laurey Peat, Paula Nourse Scheduled to open in the summer of 2019, the new state-of-theart facility will be called the Dallas Holocaust and Human Rights Museum and will be unique among the nation’s 21 Holocaustrelated museums with an expanded examination of the Holocaust featuring dozens of video testimonies from Dallas area survivors, along with new, in-depth technology-enriched exhibits on other genocides, human rights issues, and American ideals. Construction will commence immediately on the new museum, at 300 N. Houston Street in Dallas’ historic West End district, which will quadruple its current size, accommodate more than double the number of current visitors – half of whom will be school students – and feature a Cinemark XD 250-seat theater, two classrooms, a temperature-controlled library and archive, and a special reflection and memorial area for visitors over three floors. Given the increase in global, national, and local incidents of terrorist attacks, anti-Semitism, hate speech, and hate crimes, the
creation of the Dallas Holocaust and Human Rights Museum has never been more critical or relevant. According to the Anti-Defamation League (ADL), 2016 was the second deadliest year for domestic extremist-related deaths in the United States since 1970 – the first year ADL began recording the statistic. “We need a place that allows us to discuss human rights, diversity, respect for others, and what that means for our city today,” said Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings. “The new Dallas Holocaust and Human Rights Museum will be that place. It will become a forum, right here in Dallas, to discuss the effects of hatred and how we as a community, united by understanding and acceptance, can counteract a dangerous history.” Thanks to the tremendous work of the capital campaign chairs, Rebecca Fletcher, Frank Risch, and Ron Steinhart, the Museum met its $61 million goal and announced that it is extending its fundraising campaign to raise an additional $10 million, or a total of $71 million, to ensure institutional excellence by
enhancing educational programming, hosting additional special exhibits, as well as funding for more teacher training, scholarships for students, programs fostering civil discourse and acceptance, technology upgrades, and ensuring its long-term financial stability. “We are heartened by the tremendous support of our commu-
nity and incredible donors to make this big dream a reality,” said Mary Pat Higgins, Museum President and CEO. “With our initial goal met to enable the start of construction, we are emboldened to expand our campaign to raise additional funding for enhanced educational programing and to ensure excellence in the years to come.” Campaign Co-Chair Frank Risch said, “Achieving this major milestone of raising $61M ensures that we can build this new museum. Now, it’s time for us to continue fundraising to ensure long-term institutional
excellence and financial sustainability for this first-class educational institution for which this community can be proud. With all that is going on in our world today, the need for such a facility, with its extensive educational programming, has never been greater.” With the growing need for additional educational programming, the Museum’s expanded goal ensures excellence in the following area for decades to come: World-class, Holocaust and human rights-related special exhibitions

Scholarship funds to ensure access to all students in North Texas Compelling programs that will foster civil discourse and acceptance of all people An education resource center for Texas and the surrounding states, providing curriculum training to teach difficult but all too relevant subject matters in an accurate and age-appropriate manner Adequate funding to maintain the facility and refresh and enhance the permanent exhibition and technology on an ongoing basis to provide a first-class visitor experience “The new Dallas Holocaust and Human Rights Museum will allow us to serve more students, teachers, and visitors than ever before, which is critical to our mission,” said Florence Shapiro, Board Chair. “Our goal, through education, is to overcome prejudice, bigotry, intolerance, and the suffering they cause.” The programs will include student outreach, curriculum for teachers, special events, and hosting prominent speakers. Independent research has shown that student attitudes and levels of tolerance are strongly impacted by visits to the Museum, and teachers have reported positive changes in student behavior following a Museum experience. In recognizing the contributions of the 20 local Holocaust Survivors at the groundbreaking ceremony, Mayor Rawlings proclaimed October 10th, 2017, “Dallas Holocaust and Human Rights Day” in Dallas, and thanked the survivors for their service and devotion to Dallas and the nation.
shared a different event invite with him, one made by an actual Houstonian (that had the same name as UMA’s event and took place in the same location at the same time). Both the UMA and Heart of Texas Facebook groups have been shut down by Facebook.
It appears some Texans have quite literally become the puppets of Russia. On May 21, two agitated groups of protesters met in from of the Islamic Da'wah Center in Houston. One group, wearing "White Lives Matter" shirts, came to oppose the opening of a new library in the religious center (falsely led to believe it was publicly funded). The other group, waving signs reading "Muslims are welcome here," showed up to support the center and the community it served. The energized clash of protesters was not physically violent, but Houston police showed up to make sure it stayed that way. By Alex Zielinski, San Antonio Current Unbeknownst to everyone involved, both rallies were organized by a group of distant internet trolls located in St. Petersburg, Russia. The coordinators of these two Facebook events were two seemingly polarized Facebook groups — one called the "Heart of Texas" with 250,000 likes, and the other titled “United Muslims of
America" with 320,000 likes. But a federal investigation into Russia's influence on the 2016 election has linked both accounts to the same St. Petersburg troll hub. "What neither side could have known was that Russian trolls were encouraging both sides to battle in the streets and create division between real Americans,"said U.S. Senator Richard Burr, chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee, in hearing on Capitol Hill.
Burr said the Russian government spent a grand total of $200 to advertise these dueling events on Facebook. Then, it seems, they let social media do the rest. News stories about the May protest noted that the "Heart of Texas" organizers never showed up — and that local Islamic groups weren't involved in the counter-protest. Now we know why. "It’s hard to attend an event in Houston, Texas, when you’re
A screenshot of the Event Page for "Stop Islamization of Texas," which was created by the Russian-linked group Heart of Texas trolling from a site in St. Pete, Russia," Burr said. Some Houstonians object to Burr’s allegations, claiming that the main counter-protest was organized by actual Houston residents concerned about the anti-Islam rally. “We had a legitimate counter protest and civil rights concern,” wrote protester Chris
Martin in an email to the Current. “The counter-protest was in no way shape or form initiated, promoted, or controlled by Russian operatives… I personally know many of the counter-protest organizers.” Martin never saw the event posted by United Muslims of America — he said he was drawn to the protest after a friend
Lawmakers on Capitol Hill have already verified that Russian government-funded groups spent at least $100,000 on political Facebook ads preceding the presidential election. If $200 can buy you a orchestrated clash on the streets of a city thousands of miles away, imagine what they could have done with the rest.

Record Crowds Enjoyed Cultural Fun at the 13th Annual Plano International Festival Every October, downtown Plano’s Haggard Park explodes in a colorful cultural celebration as the Plano International Festival showcases the city’s rich tapestry of cultures. A concurrent Fitness and Wellness Fair plus partnerships with local non-profits helped the Festival provide real and far-reaching positive impacts in the local community and even globally. By Linda Adler, www.PlanoInternationalFestival.org.
Photo by Ludmila Taran, Marc M. Friedland, and Christian Ocampo The day-long event began on a serious note with the area’s only outdoor naturalization ceremony, held in conjunction with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and presided over by The Honorable Amos L. Mazzant III. The 50 candidates hailed from multiple different countries and included several service members. Plano City
Mayor Pro Tem Rick Grady gave remarks, as well as Festival emcee, board member, and sponsor Dr. T.J. Johnson. Festival Honorary Chair and Collin College Trustee Dr. Raj Menon also spoke, along with Festival President Graciela Katzer and Multicultural Outreach Roundtable Co-chair Mary Alice Garza. As their first action as Americans, most of the new citizens registered to vote at the League of Women Voters table, thus taking their first step as involved citizens. After the ceremony, the main stage came alive with colorful dances and music from local cultural groups from Europe to the Americas, including star singer Ludmila Kasyanenko, considered the “Madonna” of the Ukraine. Other performers were the Dallas Black Dance Theater, CASA Argentina, the Scottish Highland Dancers, Ollin Tonalzin Aztec Dancers, Regina Romero dancing flamenco, and the Chamberlain Performing Arts. Many of the performances were interactive, giving audience members a chance to try belly dancing and join in an Aztec friendship circle. “We hope that when people come away from the Festival, they’ll remember the wide variety of costumes and music and dance styles and appreciate the beauty of that diversity,” stated Dr. Johnson.
Besides enriching the community with cultural performances and displays, the Festival also boosts the community’s health with a free Fitness and Wellness Fair full of valuable services and information for all ages. Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Plano, the main sponsor of the Fair, supplied 400 free flu shots for children and adults plus glucose screening for over 100 people. Lions Club International District 2X-1 provided vision screening for nearly 40 infants and toddlers, and Cigna provided
The impact of the Fair will even extend internationally – well over 1,000 people in developing countries will be given the gift of clear vision due to the Lions Club Recycle For Sight Project which collects used eyeglasses, reconditions them, and then distributes them in developing countries, where vision care is often unaffordable or inaccessible. The Festival partnered with local chapters of the Lions Club, Americas Best Contacts and Eyeglasses, and the Islamic Association of Collin County to collect 1,650 pairs of used eyeglasses, making a significant contribution to the program and
big hit with their robot Corsair. And many attendees participated in physics and chemistry demonstrations and activities led by local high school and college students. More unique experiences awaited visitors along the tree-lined paths of Haggard Park where cultural groups showed handicrafts, textiles, artwork and other items from their culture, including Argentina, India, Brazil, Scotland, Peru, and many others. Attendees could also learn about services from local non-profits and various City of Plano departments, including police, fire, libraries, and environmental services. “The Festival really brings the community together in so many ways,” stated Ms. Katzer. “We not only celebrate diversity in a fun way, we also expose people to information and services that they may not otherwise know about. We feel that this is an important service to the community.” The festival’s comprehensive Zero Waste program again achieved impressive results in diverting festival waste from landfill. A key component of the program is asking all attendees to sort their trash at Educational Waste Stations, guided by
multiple free health screenings, including free glucose tests for nearly 200 people. Other services included blood pressure checks, dental exams, spinal exams and even free massages. And 20 people donated in the Carter Blood Drive, helping to save many people’s lives in the community.
helping provide clearer vision to hundreds of people around the world. For the second year, the Festival partnered with Indie Meme, a local non-profit that screens independent films from South Asia, to bring another fascination film to the event. The documentary "Song
of Lahore" profiles the struggles of a group of classical Pakistani musicians who turned to playing jazz on their traditional instruments and garnered an invitation to play with Wynton Marsalis at Lincoln Center. The Festival accepted donations to see the film, which went to benefit the Plano Symphony Orchestra’s Education Scholarship Program, funded by the Alice Hobbs Education and Outreach Fund. The scholarships provide free private music lessons to talented middle school students in PISD who could otherwise not afford such les-
sons. The Symphony also provided local music experts as part of a panel to discuss the many themes of the film after the screening. The Festival also featured an expanded STEAM section at the newly restored, historic Saigling House, which sits in the north-west corner of Haggard Park and is home to the ArtCentre of Plano. Three Grandmasters and one International Women’s Master from the UTD Chess Club were a huge draw as they demonstrated moves and educated attendees. Chain Reaction, Plano Senior High’s robotics club, was a
trained volunteer Green Ambassadors, into regular trash, recycling and organic waste bins. To make this easier and boost diversion, the festival provides biodegradable plates, bowls and utensils to all food court vendors so that visitors can place their plates and food waste into the organic waste bins for later composting by the City of Plano. This and other green efforts have helped the Festival win numerous awards, including the 2009, 2011, 2012, 2014, and 2015 City of Plano Environmental Star of Excellence Award; second place in the Keep Texas Beautiful 2012 Civic Organization Award; and finalist in the 2012 Green Source DFW Environmental Leadership Awards. Speaking of food, the Festival featured ten food trucks offering a mouth-watering variety of ethnic food and classic festival fare, including teriyaki bowls, boba tea, shaved ice, funnel cakes, corn dogs, and plenty of barbecue! The food trucks were a huge attraction. The Festival's Multicultural Art Exhibit, which showcases original works of art from members of the Plano Art Association, was viewable throughout the day in the Gallery of the Courtyard Theater. The 2018 Plano International Festival is scheduled for October 13 in Haggard Park.
