or me, these last few months have definitely been about finding ones self and completely understanding what you want from life, who you want to surround yourself with and who you want to be as a person... Deep I know. I recently came across a quote and it was something along the lines of ‘surround yourself with people you wish to be like’ - whether it be their outlook on life, their ambitions or even what they do to be happy and have fun. I don’t know how this fell into place but each person featured in this issue all fall into my category of ‘people who I wish to be like’ -- we have the incredible duo Sydney & Devon Carlson who inspire me with their work ethic and motivate me to venture forth into creating more businesses; we then have Fabienne Costa, the lady behind YCL jewellery - whilst her work ethic may also inspire me it is mainly her passion and ethical values that intrigue me and make me think about what I really want to stand for. We also have Jasset Iva; her kindness, carefree attitude and of course her desire to travel all bring out all the best reasons to explore, enjoy life and get out into the ocean! Flicka Elisa on the other hand reminds me to stay true to who I am and to not be afraid to be unique and then lastly, Liv Hoffman inspires me to be more creative and to actually pick up the DSLR my parents got me a few years ago and start snapping! So go out and find those people you too find inspiring, hopefully the girls in this issue can help you along the way. Enjoy!

ello hello! This issues editorial comes to you from London, a place I’m pleased to call my home for a few months this year. Although we had a few bumps along the road to produce this feature (locked out of our Airbnb, missing PR samples, and lost makeup artists!) I’m proud of the results and so thankful for the team of talented creatives who worked hard to produce these images. Without a doubt, living abroad and travelling has been one of the most thrilling, life-changing and exciting moments of my life. I want to take a moment to encourage you all to embark on a journey or adventure of some sort, because the people you’ll meet and the experiences you’ll have will forever alter you as a person... And for the better! Travel, in my personal opinion, is the best cure for any kind of emptiness that one may be feeling. You’ll learn new things every day, push yourself to new heights and boundaries and slowly start to discover who you are and what you want out of life. For all those who may be feeling empty, lost or confused I’d encourage you to take that leap of faith, because I promise you, life does get better. Don’t give up on hope... The world is a wonderful place filled with amazing opportunities and one day you’ll be so glad (if not already) that you’re apart of it.

HAVE YOU HAD A PARTICULAR ‘PINCH ME’ MOMENT? DEV // We were just recently at BeautyCon LA and Wildflower was exhibiting. Once the show opened our booth got swarmed with people and so many of them knew who Sydney and I were. We received so many compliments and hugs from everyone that came to our booth. At the end of the day we had sold out of all of our cases. This was our 4th BeautyCon and by far the craziest! I’m so thankful for the experience. SYD // Yes! More than once! But one I will always remember was when we first started and I would be at school and see so many girls walking around with Wildflower Cases on their phones! It was crazy to me knowing we had made that in our own house and now people are buying them and loving it. It made me the happiest person!
“
IT WAS CRAZY TO ME KNOWING WE HAD MADE THAT IN OUR OWN HOUSE
YOU’VE RECENTLY COLLABORATED WITH THE LIKES OF MADDI BRAGG AND FREE PEOPLE... WHO WOULD YOU LOVE TO COLLABORATE WITH IN THE FUTURE?
DEV // I’d love to collaborate with brands and influencers from across the board. Working with brands like Jeffrey Campbell, Urban Decay, and Reformation are definitely on my bucket list. My dream collaboration would be Miley Cyrus, considering she’s the reason Wildflower exists! SYD // There are so many people and brands I would LOVE to collaborate with. But for me, I love makeup. So being able to do something with Urban Decay, Anastasia, NYX, or any brand along those lines would be so cool!
DO YOU HAVE ANY FUTURE PLANS FOR EXPANSION? DEV // Of course! We’re planning on getting a new office and hiring more people to help grow Wildflower. There’s so many things to get done and I’m looking forward to the future of Wildflower. SYD // Yes of course! I have a big imagination so there are so many things I want to do with the company. Dev and I have always loved clothes so hopefully we can incorporate that into Wildflower sometime soon.
WHAT ARE THE BEST AND WORST PARTS OF WORKING WITH YOUR FAMILY? DEV // Working with our family is great because we get to spend so much time together. There’s so much love and positivity constantly being spread around whether it’s at work or at a family dinner! I can’t imagine running Wildflower any other way. SYD // Working with your family definitely has its ups and downs. The best part is being able to be surrounded by people who support you and are always encouraging you to do what you love. But sometimes it is easy to get in little arguments because of how close we are!
“
[WE’RE] SURR PEOPLE WHO SU ARE ALWAYS ENC TO DO WHAT
“
ROUNDED BY UPPORT YOU AND COURAGING YOU T YOU LOVE
HOW HAS YOUR CONNECTIONS AND SOCIAL MEDIA PRESENCE HELPED YOUR BUSINESS? DEV // My sister and I have always been very active on social media. We love taking photos and posting them everywhere. The platforms we have built allowed us to connect with many influencers and brands that we love! Wildflower started on social media and I can’t imagine what we would do without it. We get to communicate with our customers and make them feel apart of the Wildflower family. Social media is key in business!! SYD // Since Wildflower originally started on social media, I’ve been able to meet so many people and friends through the internet. This has allowed me to travel and experience things with people I would have never met if it weren’t for social media. All of this has helped the business grow and reach new audiences it wouldn’t have without the help of the internet!
WHEN YOU’RE NOT WORKING, WHAT DO YOU GUYS ENJOY DOING? DEV // I enjoy shopping, travelling, eating and drinking margaritas. I also love vintage shopping and finding unique pieces to inspire me for Wildflower designs. SYD // On my days off I love being at the beach and being surrounded by my friends! I’m definitely a summer person so being outside when it’s sunny makes me the happiest.
WHAT DO YOU LOOK FOR WHEN HIRING PEOPLE FOR YOUR TEAM? DEV // When looking for new hires, I look for people who are passionate and truly understand our vision. We search for people who embody Wildflower and want to help make it the biggest brand ever! SYD // When looking to hire someone it’s important to find someone you’re comfortable with and can easily work with. For us, we have friends that offer their help and work with us all the time! What’s better than working with your friends!
“
I LOOK FOR PEOPLE WHO ARE PASSIONATE AND TRULY UNDERSTAND OUR VISION
IF YOU COULD PINPOINT ONE REASON BEHIND YOUR SUCCESS WHAT WOULD IT BE? DEV // A lot of hard work and positivity. Not everyday is going to be the most fun day, but that time is necessary to grow your company and make your goals a reality. SYD // Picking just one reason behind the success of our business is hard! There are so many things that go into becoming successful, but, if I had to pick one thing it would be keeping a strong, positive mindset. Even when times are tough you have to keep your mind in the right place.
WHAT MUSIC, FILMS OR INDIVIDUALS INSPIRE YOU THE MOST?
DEV // I’m mainly inspired by the people I surround myself with. All the people closest to me work so hard and want the most out of life. We strive to stay on each others’ levels. SYD // I get inspired by the smallest of things; but speaking of music Coachella is such an inspiring place! The way people put together their outfits and dress up is so amazing to see. I love to people watch and see how unique and different every person is. And that’s what inspires me most; individuality!

6:30AM Yoga and mediation to begin my day with a clear mind & open heart
7:30AM Breakfast time! Usually a big smoothie with lots of greens, banana, pea protein, avocado, frozen berries, coconut milk & hemp oil.
8:00AM My day in the studio begins. I will have a quick meeting with my staff to plan our day ahead.
12:00PM 9:00AM Begin crafting jewellery for our online orders.
Lunch time! I am ravenous by this point. Lunch is currently raw flax crackers with cashew cheese, tomatoes, lots of fresh sprouts, olive oil, salt and pepper.
1:00PM Check in with our team in India about our new collection and sampling new designs (we released our very first ethically manufactured collection July 26th). I also take time to design, sketch and come up with any concepts for upcoming collection shoots. I usually then reply to my personal emails and complete any tasks my team have allocated for me.
2:00PM Continue making pieces for our online orders.
5:00PM I usually finish up in the studio now, plan our next day and ensure everything is prepped.
6:00PM Cook dinner. I’m loving my slow cooker at the moment!
7:00PM Kiss all my animals and my man; ultimately enjoying quality time together.
9:00PM I’m usually in bed at this time reading a book with my man, our greyhound Atlas and our two cats Salem & Spirit tucked in with me.
question one
WHERE DO YOU DRAW YOUR INSPIRATIONS FROM? Books, nature, vintage finds and travelling to far away lands.
question two
WHO WOULD YOU LOVE TO SEE WEAR YOUR DESIGNS? Miranda Kerr and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley would definitely be a pretty big dream come true!
question three
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO SOMEONE WANTING TO START THEIR OWN JEWELLERY BRAND? Strive to understand your customer and what they want. You also have to have a clear vision of what you want, how you want to feel and what you want to create. Always choose from your heart, as your head will tell you that you can’t, you’re not worthy and you don’t deserve it, whilst your heart knows. It is from this place that I innovate and create everything within our brand.
question four
WE ADMIRE YOUR STRONG ENVIRONMENTAL VALUES AND BELIEFS AGAINST ANIMAL CRUELTY, HOW HAS THIS BEEN RECEIVED BY YOUR CUSTOMERS AND WOULD YOU SAY IT’S A KEY FEATURE IN BRINGING IN NEW CONSUMERS? Definitely! 80% of our customers buy from YCL specifically due to the ethical & environmental beliefs we build our business from. It’s so special to see more & more women making conscious decisions when they buy. question five
FOR YOUR LATEST COLLECTION YOU TRAVELLED TO INDIA AND HAVE STATED THAT YOU WILL CONTINUE TO GO TO THIS COUNTRY FOR UPCOMING COLLECTIONS, WHAT IS IT THERE THAT YOU ARE SO DRAWN TOWARDS? Our factory and team of craftsmen are based in India, so now I travel there a couple times a year to sample and design future collections as well as meeting with our team over there. We chose to take more time and consideration when choosing where to expand and outsource our manufacturing so that we can ensure no humans were being harmed by their working conditions. We want our treasures manufactured with just as much love and intention as they are when hand made by yours truly. India is such an incredible country filled with kindhearted people. As a designer, I draw inspiration from every corner flower stall, the colours of the spices and rituals on the Ganges. It truly is somewhere I feel at home.

Who’s
THAT GIRL? Lena Zochmeister is the reason why we started this piece. We’ve previously had our montly favourite models featuring in our who’s that girl spread but chances are you probably heard of them before. This time though the Central Saint Martins student is defintely making you think ‘who’s that girl?’. With her elf-like features and choppy haircut she’s already one step closer in becoming a high fashion model. As her career has only just started we have mainly seen her doing work for independent labels, but we’re obviously not the only one seeing the potential as she was recently found amongst the pages of ELLE Finland. We expect to see the high-cheekboned and brown haired babe in i-D, LOVE and Dazed in the very near future and despite her height (5”6) we also predict that she will grace the catwalks for the likes of Marc Jacobs, Louis Vuitton and Alexander Wang. Keep your eyes peeled, she’s one to watch!

WE LOVE YOUR INSTAGRAM AND FIND YOUR VISUALS AND OUTLOOK ON FASHION INCREDIBLY INSPIRING, WHAT ADVICE CAN YOU GIVE TO THOSE WANTING TO CREATE A PERSONAL BRAND IMAGE ON SOCIAL MEDIA?
I always liked that thing that everyone doesn’t normally like. I remember my brother once said to me that he saw some shoes in a store in London and told me that only I would like them, and I said to him why? The answer is simply because they were weird looking. I didn’t feel bad about it because of the fact that it was true. So my best advice will be stop doing shit that you don’t like, ignore the fear that you need to fit into society’s image and looks. You can copy somebody who you like very much. Let it inspire you and let yourself be similar to whoever you are looking up to and let it build you until you have found yourself. Its very important to trust yourself to be real and believe in what you are doing.
THERE IS NO DENYING YOU HAVE GREAT STYLE; WHERE DO YOU LOOK FOR INSPIRATION AND WHO ARE YOUR FASHION ICONS AND GO-TO DESIGNERS?
My style has always been the same idea; very free and very androgynous. I always admired and was inspired by strong women, and if you pay attention in every single picture, I want to say that women are strong and they can do anything. I like women who play with men’s clothes, I find it very sexy. I am inspired by Jane Birkin, Grace Jones and Yohji Yamamoto.
WHAT EDITING APPS DO YOU USE AND WHAT CAMERA HELPS CAPTURE THOSE AESTHETICALLY PLEASING SHOTS?
I think camera and apps are just tools it does not matter what you use, what is important is what you shoot and the authenticity of that. For most of my photos I use a Fujifilm camera. Specifically, the XT1, it is a mirrorless camera and combined with the Fujis awesome lenses makes a great fit for what I want to capture. As for editing, it depends, sometimes I use Photoshop, sometimes LightRoom and often, just VSCOcam and Snapseed on my phone.
MANY PEOPLE STRUGGLE TO FIND THEIR INDIVIDUAL STYLE; GOT ANY TIPS? I must say that in every place that I go I love to look for secret stores, I can stay for hours doing that. If I like something that costs even five euros, I will still buy it without minding about what the price is. I don’t like to try very hard in what I do. You don’t need to follow all the trends; you must put something of you. It’s very important to feel confident and comfortable in what you are and in what you wear. Would you really want to iron out your individuality and look like everyone else?
HAVE YOU EVER THOUGHT ABOUT DOING SOMETHING ELSE WITHIN THE FASHION INDUSTRY? STARTING A LABEL, AGENCY OR BLOG ETC. Actually I think about it a lot. I’ve got some projects that will be out very soon. Still working on it. The brand is @buffclothes. It will consist of casual street wear clothing with unique designs.
QUICK FIRE QUESTIONS ----WHAT ARE YOUR TOP THREE SONGS AND WHY? björk - all is full of love I was always inspired a lot by Bjork oh god she’s a goddess and icon of creativity FKA twigs - Water Me I love scary shit Princess Chelsea - The Cigarette Duet I liked the characters and the mood in the video
FAVOURITE TRAVEL DESTINATION: Iceland. I haven’t been there yet, but it looks so beautiful from what I’ve seen; very magical and peaceful.
HAVE YOU GOT ANY TATTOOS PLANNED FOR THE FUTURE? Last year I did a cicada tattoo on my stomach, it was so painful that I had to pause every once in awhile. I have a got a few on my mind and I am currently obsessed with insect’s so maybe my next tattoo will relate to them. I go to a local place and the tattoo artist is a good friend of mine and works internationally.
FAVOURITE PHOTOGRAPHER: Juergen Teller, and of course my boyfriend @VasjenKatro
HAVE YOU GOT A SAYING/QUOTE YOU LIVE BY? The more you know who you are, and what you want, the less you let things upset you.
@YUNGLIV_
LIV HOFFMAN the girl behind the lens tells us the stories behind her images
001 KILLER AND A SWEET THANG This photo was taken at @killerandasweetthang’s party at China Chalet in Manhattan. I really respect her work; she has a website where she teaches girls about sex ed which is really inspiring to me. I think she talks about things that no one else wants to speak about.
002 STREET ART Texture is something that really inspires me. I love when graffiti is buffed which creates a cool double tone on the street which almost looks like a painting.
003 GOOD THINGS COME TO THOSE WHO HUSTLE I dated this amazing artist who really inspired me.We lived on the same block. He was double my age and taught me a lot. One of the most talented people I’ve ever met; he came from nothing, in the middle of nowhere, and hustled harder then anyone else I know.
004 SAHARA I’ve known Sahara since we were 12. This photo was taken at the Bronx Zoo when we were on a field trip in middle school. Now she is a big model and it’s amazing to see her evolve and become what she has always wanted and dreamed of.
005 CHINATOWN A lot of the Fish Markets in Chinatown have really colorful, vibrant lighting. When I enter the market, I always feel like I am in this purple and pink dream. I think the colors attract me to the markets most. Shooting in Chinatown, I feel like I’m in a completely different place, which I love.
006 BLUE MILK I had a dream one night about filling my parents bathtub up with milk and I decided that I was going to do it. I set up all these different colored lights and turned my parents bathroom into this awesome milky colorful vibe. I photographed Lily in the tub which is one of my favorite series to this day. I named the series Blue Milk because it’s my favorite color.
007 RED SCARF I always see this women screaming at people to buy her food and it’s really cool to see her hustle and sell her product. She works hard and she is there every single day off of the Bowery trying to make a buck.
008 FREEDOM TUNNEL Freedom Tunnel is a tunnel run by Amtrak on the Upper West Side. I started exploring the tunnels when I was about 12 or 13. I took my father one time and we rode our bikes through the tunnel. I explored the tunnels for about 3 years on and off until they closed them down and put up an electric fence.
009 THE STREETS ARE FILLED WITH MUSES I have a thing for photographing random people on the street who I think have a powerful look. There was something about her look that really caught my eye. I wish I could give her this photo somehow. That is the beauty of photographing someone random on the street though.
BEFORE WE SAY GOODBYE
what we’re loving
The desire to travel is an everlasting feeling and in these last few months the need to explore has been increasingly prominent. We are currently living through the adventurers who share their experiences online; our favourites include Sam Earp, Sam Evans, Eva Gutowski and Louis Cole. Aside from epically cool (and enviable) shots, as fellow fashion folk we also have to think of our dream travel attire... We’re currently lusting over Rat & Boa, insta it-girls’ Jessie Andrews new brand ‘Basic Swim’ and of course, topping the wishlist is a pair of Balenciaga Ceinture Boots!
