ong time no speak! You may have noticed that we had a little time to ourselves and oh what a whirlwind time it has been... Last time we spoke my editor’s letter was filled with optimism for the future as I had just lived three weeks full of utter happiness in Australia. After my trip I went straight back to university and had the biggest crash with my emotions; I was no longer rushing with adrenaline, enjoying walks on the beach and mentally I couldn’t cope with going back to the repetitions of my general routine, the stress from my education and of course, the grey skies and cold winds that fills England. Aside from my studies I also had an operation and started an internship that made me question my career aspirations. Ultimately, I felt very uninspired and pretty low. Now
here’s
the
turning
point...
I always believe things happen for a reason and even though I’m still trying to comprehend the reasonings behind the last few months I think it fundamentally comes down to focusing on doing what you love, being around people you love and working towards the finer things in life. Dalliance will always be a place that I can go back to and often acts as reminder of who, where and what I want to be and despite being hard to work on sometimes it was always helps to ignite my ambitious and inspired mind-set. To conclude, I found this quote that has also helped me to come back to my normal self: ‘Don’t hope for it more than you work for it’. I hope you enjoy this issue and find the people in it inspiring!

i everyone! This issue comes to you from all corners of the globe.... Literally. As I write this editors letter from Florence, I’m going through the images from this issues editorial which was shot in Berlin last month. Having spent a little less than a month there, I made some amazing friends and memories which I will cherish for the rest of my life. It is truly the most wonderful place on earth, filled with the some of the most accepting and fascinating people you will meet. I promise you that now! That is why I loved styling this “Kids of Berlin” shoot, alongside my beautiful friend Ana, capturing the essence of Berlin’s youth. We also have an interview with the Berlin based model/musician Shawny Sander, who shares with us a little glimpse into Berlin’s famous night life. In a somewhat ode to my Aussie roots, we also interviewed Mel Tan this issue, owner of the extremely successful Joy Hysteric boutique, talking all things business, fashion and tattoos (seriously... hers are to die for!) I hope you all enjoy this issue! Have a lovely day or night, wherever you may be in this exciting world!

FIRST OFF, WHAT'S IT LIKE LIVING IN BERLIN? Well, for me Berlin is especially great for young people. It is a very good place to be free and it’s much easier to follow your passion here. Also, for the most part people let each other live how they like and are very open minded, as the city is extremely creative. The music scene is awesome as well. I just love the vibe that goes on here. It can be glamorous but it always has an edgy touch to it. I really like that.

I'M SURE BERLIN IS AN INCREDIBLE CITY, BUT IS IT SO INCREDIBLE AFTER HOURS? Recently there were incidents out on Revaler StraĂ&#x;e, a famous party route that leads to all the clubs in Friedrichshain. Some criminals just randomly attacked innocent people with a knife and robbed them. There was a girl I know and she had really bad cuts on her face and neck. The story was pretty daunting, but I really have to say the amount of comparable incidents is really low. I mean there a always some drunk idiots out there who throw a beer bottle on railway lines, but I think nightlife in other cities is a lot more dangerous compared to Berlin. Nevertheless I would still suggest going out in small groups at night, especially as a girl.
WHAT DO THE COOL KIDS, LIKE YOURSELF DO WHEN THE SUN GOES DOWN? Usually we start the night off with drinks and food at somebodies hood or the band rehearsal room. Then we hang out at a bar or a concert. At 1-2am we’d normally like to go to a club but sometimes we just end up in the band room, playing some music with wine in our blood! Those are my favorite nights.

• • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • CAN YOU TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOUR BEST NIGHT OUT IN BERLIN? There was one night, which I don’t remember at all. I just woke up and looked at my phone, watched the videos from the night. It looked like a very fun night. That was pretty memorial.

There is no specific party outfit when I go to the bar around my corner-just my ripped jeans with a crop top/ turtle neck, moms old leather jacket, some platform shoes, my beloved Justine Clenquet choker and messy hair - that’s it. When I go to an event where I have to dress up a little bit, I usually choose a slip dress, fishnet stockings, my night blue fake fur coat and some platform sandals.

Who’s
THAT GIRL? Spanishborn Steffy Argelich is quickly becoming the model of the moment. With her perfectly imperfect curls and high cheekbones it was only a matter of time before we saw her grace the covers of Harper’s Bazaar and Numero as well as taking to the runways of Louis Vuitton, Isabel Marant & Ellery. Her Instagram embodies her cool and carefree attitude and features a mass of insanely good looking selfies and grainy travel snaps. The only question we keep asking ourselves is which cigarette filled image should we repost to our Instagram?

DESCRIBE YOUR PERFECT DAY & NIGHT.
I am very happy when I am creating stuff. I did my major in Textile Design so I love to create new materials and designs as well as getting inspired by the creativity of others. Walking through cities like NY & LA, seeing the architecture of the city, spending the day at cool coffee places, meeting new people, museums, are all aspects which makes my ‘perfect’ day. My ideal night consists of good food and deep conversations with the people I love.
IF YOU COULD INVITE FIVE PEOPLE TO YOUR PARTY, WHO WOULD THEY BE AND WHY? Mick Jagger Diane von Furstenberg Kate Moss Madonna Grace Jones
And why? I mean, do we need an explanation? I’d be re-living Studio 54.

Tattoos
rk o w e a r r a u o s y o o tt is a t e n o r You ich h W ! t r a of e? t i r u o fav My newest is always my current favourite so that would have to be the beautiful black/grey peony on my forearm which was done by Jon Mesa in New York out of Sacred Tattoo on Broadway. The tattoo of a rose and mandala linked by chains is extremely special to me as I had this done to represent my family after the passing of my mother last year. Her name was Rosie. A good friend and my regular tattoo artist Merry Wilson did this for me, along with all the other tattoos I have on that same (left) arm.
you e r a ’ s d o d en r t s ‘ ne o o o t t er h a e c t t i s h t w uld d Wha o n h a s f, o le p o d e n p o f on k c e you r f? o I’m not really aware of ‘trends’ when it r a e l c comes to tattoos as I don’t particularly
follow any when it comes to anything. I think the main thing people should steer clear of when it comes to tattoos though is copying someone else’s. That’s not what a tattoo is about and it shouldn’t really be seen as an accessory, like buying ‘that bag or the same earrings that you see someone else has’. A tattoo is meant to be individual to its owner so I would recommend that people find an idea for themselves and make it their own - inspiration is one thing but blatant copying is just weird when it comes to putting permanent ink on your skin. I feel really strongly about this particularly as I’m aware of a number of girls who have just done a ‘copy & paste’ of the floral tattoo on my right shoulder, placement and all. I get messages on Instagram and emails all the time actually asking me for the ‘original artwork’ or a closeup photos so they can ‘go get my tattoo’ – that’s not how it works.

Depends where I am at the time, if at home in Byron – I’d say a pair of bikinis and some cut off denim shorts (One Teaspoon most likely). Otherwise, if it’s a night out, throw me a black, shapeless slip dress and a pair of killer mules, minimal accessories and my Chloe bag and I’m done.

However, I’d be very happy to to raid Christine Centenera’s and Kim K’s.

I was 23, working in retail and just finished Uni. The opportunity came up with my boss at the time to buy into his boutique which I had been managing and buying for and I though why not do it for myself if I am doing it for someone else already. So it went from there and I aimed to create a boutique space with high end designers not readily available on the Gold Coast or even QLD at that time (2004).

Staffing has always been a major issue for me, to find other people who care enough about your business as you do will never happen.

Artist Comparison - By Tayla Galvin -
HALSEY CHVRCHES Ashley Frangipane AKA Halsey is a young, up and coming pop sensation in the making. Despite references to sex, drugs and religion; Halsey shows striking similarities to Scottish electronic trio, ‘Chvrches’. Both having a synth-pop sound, these artists give off an 80s dance vibe that draw in listeners with their female vocals, harmonies and lyrics that are poetically honest.
I’M A WANDERESS I’M A ONE NIGHT STAND DON’T BELONG TO NO CITY DON’T BELONG TO NO MAN I’M THE VIOLENCE IN THE POURING RAIN I’M A HURRICANE - Hasley -
I’VE STILL GOT THE NOTES WE LEFT ON PILLOWS THERE IN A BOX NEXT TO ALL THEM MEMORIES WHAT’S BEEN AND GONE WHAT’S GONE IS HISTORY - Rosie Lowe -
ROSIE LOWE BANKS Listening to Rosie Lowe is like taking your ears on a musical journey. With each second played, she brings you layers of an array of sounds, loops, distortion and pitch variation. Having such an organic sound Lowe resembles Californian songstress ‘BANKS’. Although, BANKS has a more ‘haunted’ and low tempo music style, both artists evoke an emotional story throughout each delivered track.
ZAK ABEL SAM SMITH Zak Abel is a 19 year old song-smith from London that dishes out a fresh take on genres; soul and modern electronic. Now having a few Ep’s under his belt, Zak’s raspy voice flows effortlessly and flawlessly throughout each track that contains a collection of sounds that vary from piano and guitar to snares and drum loops. Resembling an early ‘Sam Smith’ with a more upbeat tempo, both these artists explore themes such as lovelessness throughout their lyrics. For example, “Something keeps telling me you are no good, I don’t listen baby. How could you make feel so blue?” (ALCHEMY, Zak Abel) in comparison to “I try to imagine something closer and somebody who is good for me, I’m so tired of all this searching” (DROWNING SHADOWS, Sam Smith). Melody wise, these artists are very different, but vocally and lyrically they captivate similar topics and portray them beautifully throughout each track they drop.
AND TONIGHT WE I’M A WALK THE TIGHT WANDERESS ROPENIGHT I’M A ONE HONEY I CAN’T STAND TAKE IT NO MORE DON’T BELONG IT’STO STRIKING NO CITYMY COMPOSURE DON’T BELONG COME LITTLE TO NOAMAN CLOSER I’M THE JUST BEFORE LET VIOLENCE IN ITHE YOU GO POURING RAIN - Zak Abel I’M A HURRICANE
BIG BOLD WOMEN, ROUND OF APPLAUSE. GET-MY-GOALS WOMEN, ROUND OF APPLAUSE. KNOW-MY-ROOTS WOMEN, ROUND OF APPLAUSE. - Sampa the Great -
SAMPA THE GREAT LAURYN HILL MISSY ELLIOT Sampa the Great is a Sydney based rapper, being Zambian-born and Botswana-raised she has such an earthy sound that is confident and gives off and almost ‘old school’ rap sound with the instrumentals that are used in each track of her debut album ‘The Mixtape’. Amongst this album, Sampa journeys through an array of political issues and presents music that has a purpose. Giving resemblances to hip-hop/soul artist, Lauryn Hill with their spirituality and lyrics that hold a message, but also shows similarities to Missy Elliot in the way they both can flow over diverse and funk music sound track.
CONNIE CONSTANCE AMY WINEHOUSE LYKKE LI Connie Constance has a raw and unique style of singing. Her distinctively British voice is flawlessly conveyed over soft synths and jingles that are produced by ‘Blue Daisy’. Together the pair creates absolute magic. Having such an intriguing voice, Connie shows resemblance to ‘Amy Winehouse’ by having the ability to propel her striking vocals and also put listeners at a complete ease. She can also be compared to Swedish singer ‘Lykke Li’; these two artists combine their poetry and emotion over tracks that are both relatable and enjoyable.
I’VE GOT YOU IN MIND ON THE REPLAY KINDA’ OBSESSED YEAH I’VE GOT LOTS OF ISSUES I WISH I WASN’T SO FUCKING EASY I’VE BEEN THINKING OF ALL THE WAYS I WOULD KISS YOU - Hasley -
