ith spending the majority of December in Sydney, I have experienced opportunities that will last as lifelong memories. Throughout my stay, my future has continued to be a hot topic - What do I want to do after university? Should I immigrate to Australia? Should I stay in London? - It’s all very daunting and my mind is constantly on overdrive, but whether it was having my first hot Christmas, turning 21 or doing my first ever skydive, being in Australia (also for the first time) has made me very excited for the future; a future that will hopefully be filled with moments that are just as great! This issue we have many creative and unique individuals who too have a future to look forward to. We have fashion socialites such as Harris Reed, Haley Appell and Beth Coleman giving us an insight to their life, thoughts and take on fashion, as well as having industry professionals like Charlotte Agnew telling us what a day in the life of a stylist is like. I wish you all the best for the new year. Let’s make this one unforgettable!

elcome, 2016! After ringing in the new year with Jasmine in Sydney (#TeamDalliance), I’ve never been more excited to begin a fresh year. Here are some of the things I’m excited for this year! My Gap Year: I am heading off to Europe at the end of March, for a year of working and playing hard! I’m hoping on spending the majority of my time in Berlin, London and Stockholm or Paris. 2. Getting Organised: If you know me well, you’d know that I am the most disorganised, frantic and forgetful person around. I’m keen to start getting my room/schedule/life organised. 3. Dalliance Magazine & My Blog: A new year brings new ideas, and I can’t wait to watch Dalliance Magazine and some personal projects grow. Stay tuned! 4. Reading Festival: Jasmine & I have booked our tickets to Reading festival and I cannot wait! The whole British festival idea appeals greatly to me (yes, even the mud, the Portaloos and the camping!) and I know it’s going to be an experience of a lifetime! 5. Backpacking: Although it’s primarily going to be a ‘work trip’ I’m excited to see Europe. On the top of my ‘To See’ List is: Santorini, Greece, Krakow, Poland, Amsterdam, Dalmatia, Croatia. Bring it on, 2016… I’m ready for ya!

DAY IN THE LIFE

charlotte agnew FASHION AND ART DIRECTOR OF CATALOGUE MAGAZINE

9AM Get to office and check emails. I will read and reply to them until about 10am

10AM I will pretty much always be working on a shoot (sometimes 2 or 3 at once!!) so until about 12pm I will be following up on photographers and PR agencies whilst going over and defining my own ideas for whatever I may be doing. I like to make mood boards and hand write lists - I always need to write rather than type in order to clearly see what I’m thinking and to be able to communicate my ideas effectively.

12PM Sometimes I will have meetings with photographers or do PR runs and returns.

1:30PM Lunch

2PM Update my social pages - keeping everything up to date with recent work is important for my audience.

3:30PM I then go over new or current work with my editors so everyone is up to date with where everything is at - this is important as most shoots will have deadlines.

4:30-5:30PM Follow up on emails from throughout the day and continue on projects I’m working on or start organising ideas for upcoming jobs.

7PM I then check our @girlsclubgirlsclub Instagram account who I run with Ellen Virgona (@smellgurl) - we will usually chat about what we have coming up or what we are doing next, or I will go over emails for other projects I have.

INSTA IT GIRL: Haley Appell

Haley Appell is the girl of our dreams. She’s a 19 year old writer, stylist and buyer and not to mention, has one of the coolest wardrobe’s we’ve ever seen. We’ve recently stumbled across her Instagram, and fell in love immediately. Naturally, she just had to be Insta ‘IT’ Girl this issue.

1. What’s on your current wish list? A studio in New York. I cant tell if I am starting to resent L.A. for valid reasons or if it’s just because it’s not New York City. Oh and a red 1953 Ford Thunderbird (picture hair up in a headscarf and big funky sunglassest).

2. What are 5 of your wardrobe essentials? A black leather jacket, little black booties (preferably with a heel because its rough out here for a shorty), vintage graphic t-shirts, the perfect Sunday farmers market dress, and a turtle neck even though its still summer here in Los Angeles.

3. If you could invite any 5 people (dead or alive) to your party, who would they be and why? Before I say anything, I am thinking this is going to be more of a soiree rather than a party. Something intimate where we can really get down to some good conversation. • Frida Khalo because she sparks so much inspiration & life within me. She is one of those women that just followed her passion no matter who tried to bring her down or what life threw her way. She reminds me to be brave.

• My mom. She is way too shy and could really use some proper socializing with the right people. So mom, if you’re reading this, I cordially invite you to my soiree. It should be a great time, just remember to RSVP. You have my phone number already, right? • Winston Churchill seems like the kind of guy you’d be standing next to at the punch bowl, about to pour yourself a drink, and then all of the sudden you’re having the deepest conversation you’ve ever had in your entire life. You ended up missing your whole party but you’re not that mad about it because now you know that as long as you’re enthusiastic and positive, your failures aren’t a total loss, in fact in some way, they’re kind of a win (or at least part of the win). Thanks Winston.

• Elvis Presley. First of all, what a stud. Second of all, I know I could trust him to play the perfect party tunes. Did I mention he’s a stud? • My grandma, apparently our mental similarities are uncanny. We supposedly have very similar beliefs and way of life. She left us before I was old enough to really be a real human myself so I didn’t get the chance to really get to know her. I would bring her back in an instant to find a family member that thrived off of unexpected adventures and that enjoyed a vegan lifestyle. 4. Who is your ultimate ‘muse’? I am not entirely sure I can name one single person as my muse. I am too influenced by a combination of things! So I suppose if I have to pick one thing as my muse, I would just say art. There’s nothing more inspiring to me than

walking around an art museum or visiting a gallery. I am an extremely visual person and find that looking at art or even making my own art makes me feel more like myself than anything else. 5. If you could live anywhere in the world, where would it be and why? I do love living underneath the California sun but there is something about New York that is so alluring and grand that living there would be a dream! Next to art, New York is my biggest ‘muse’. If not New York, then definitely Paris. Although I have never been I think I could live in a Parisian cafe for eternity. 6. Describe your perfect day or night? My perfect day would start just as the sun rose, so I could enjoy a cup of coffee while

I watch Hollywood slowly start buzzing into life. I would probably then walk to a cafe for breakfast and some prime people watching, then the farmers market and get some flowers and fresh food to make lunch. All of my gal pals would accompany me of course and we would probably walk around the city, not planning to do much but end up finding the coolest little book shops and apothecary’s. If we had enough time to get to the beach we would definitely go take a dip in the ocean. After, go back to my place,

maybe paint, dance, or maybe I would throw down some magic tricks. Actually all of that would happen and we would invite all of our favorite humans. I enjoy a day that feels like multiple different days, and that feel of “wait, that was this morning?!”

Harris Reed

Quote: “Your only competition is the person looking back at you in the mirror” - My father says this to me on a daily basis, and I always repeat it in my head like a mantra when I’m feeling stressed, which is pretty much all the time.

Film:

2. I’m torn between A Single Man (all of Tom Ford’s class in a film) and The Fifth Element (it’s so visually striking and is the quintessential Luc Besson piece).

Song:

All time: Into the Ocean - Blue October Now: Slip - Elliot Moss

Band:

Borns is great for getting ready to go out, and XXYYXX is perfect for mellowing out on the way home.

Designer: Thats an impossible question, you can’t ask me this! At the moment Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez at Proenza Schouler. I absolutely love over the top elegance, but my heart lies with classic, edgy ready to wear. At the same time I love the effortless eccentricity of J.W. Anderson for in his main line and also in his work for Loewe.

City: London of course. I’ve only been here for three months and I already feel like I’m so free to express myself - I could wear a neon pink unitard to CSM and no one would bat an eyelid. I’ve made amazing friends here who accept me for who I am and honestly I feel like I’ve found my home. Artist:

Kate Mccgwire especially the piece titled Plight. She adds this kinetic poetry to all her pieces while also conveying a dark and eerie feeling.

BIRKENSTOCK

Oh Birkenstocks! My savior! My ride or die. To be brutally honest, I HATED Birkenstocks to begin with. I thought they were the most hideous shoe I had ever come across. It wasn’t until I was an intern at ELLE Magazine that I slowly took an appreciation for the shoe that I now call my fav. It’s a little hard when you see the most stylish of women potter around the most glamourous of fashion wardrobes rocking a pair of good ol’ Birks. You have no choice but to love them. They’re the only shoe I can partner with every single item in my whole wardrobe. That’s saying something.

PEPLUM

AS WORN BY @TUULAVINTAGE

I never have been, nor will I ever be a fan of the peplum. I have never been able to pin point what it is but I am so so so passionate about hating peplum top’s and dresses. As flattering as they are and great for emphasizing a gorgeous curvy bod, I could just NEVER encourage anyone to wear one. Ever. I personally think they instantly make any cute outfit look slightly tacky and extremely boring. There are so many other ways to emphasize and flaunt your cute, curvy bod without dressing like a mama.

SPORT LUXE AS WORN BY @CHRONICLESOFHER

Sport Luxe is a trend I can appreciate, but could never jump on board of. I’ve tried. Oh trust me I’ve tried, but Sport Luxe is the type of trend that I would attempt to wear one time and feel like everyone knows that I don’t normally wear this and that I should take it off immediately. I really enjoy Sport Luxe styled in an editorial or street style blogs but I think I personally enjoy black basics and old vintage boots too much to join the Sport Luxe club. I’d be such a phoney. (But I do love my Adidas!)

SKINNY SCARVES AS WORN BY @WEWOREWHAT AND @THEFASHIONCUISINE

Skinny scarves have never appealed to me, but to be fair not many accessories do. Each winter I’ll invest in a chunky basic scarf but I just don’t see the practicality in a skinny scarf. I-just-cant.

AS WORN BY @BETHCOLEMAN

FRINGING

I love fringing, but mostly just in accessories. I think it’s a super cute detail to dress down or finish off an outfit in either a bag, vest or a pair of boots. Since the start of Spring I’ve slowly collected bits and pieces subconsciously and now I rarely leave the house without a bit of fringing falling off of me!

FLARES

AS WORN BY @LUCYWILLIAMS02 AND @ONDINEPURITON

So 70’s, so BABE’N. I picked up the cutest pair of denim flares from an op shop in Melbourne and I haven’t stopped trying to resemble Stevie Nicks since. They were definitely my main winter staple (and Spring, and Summer, and Autumn.) SO timeless and playful.

WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT SHOPPING AND WEARING VINTAGE?

Q1

Where to start?! I love the fact that when you wear vintage you’re usually wearing something totally unique and will most likely never show up anywhere wearing the same thing as anyone else. I love the quality and fabrics vintage pieces have. Older pieces were made with a much better quality than clothing today. I think that is why most pieces, no matter the age or if taken care of, have still lasted to this day. I love how even if you incorporate just a small vintage piece into your outfit it will make more of a statement than any expensive designer piece. And on that note, when shopping, I love finding pieces that you can clearly see have influenced today’s designers.

Q2 WHAT ARE YOUR BEST TIPS AND TRICKS FOR SHOPPING VINTAGE? I think the best thing to keep in mind when shopping for vintage is try to look for pieces you can switch out for modern pieces in your wardrobe. If you love wearing sundresses, look for a different cut or fabric that you wouldn’t usually . If you love wearing jeans, try looking for a great pair of Levi’s or Lee’s that are made from higher quality denim. There are so many modern pieces that have been clearly influenced by vintage so that it shouldn’t be hard to switch out that “knock off” piece you love for a better quality, vintage one. When shopping online, make sure the item is clearly photographed and described in the listing, including measurements - not just “fits like a size ___” description which is hard to base fit on. Measure a favourite item that fits you well and know those measurements when looking for a new item so you can tell if it will fit you or not.

Q3

WHAT IS YOUR MOST TREASURED VINTAGE PIECE? My most treasured vintage piece is a ring that my Opa (grandpa) had made for my mom in the 70s. It is made from a huge moonstone and has intricate branches & leaves holding the stone in place. She gave it to me a few years ago and I only wear it on special occasions.

Q4

WHAT ARE THE BEST PIECES TO BUY VINTAGE AS OPPOSED TO NEW? AND SIMILARLY, WHAT PIECES WOULD YOU RECOMMEND NOT BUYING VINTAGE?

I am always going to recommend buying vintage fur. Sorry PETA - I know that it’s a controversial subject but I’m a vintage fur lover and I live in a state that gets insanely cold so wearing fur is sometimes needed. Vintage jeans are also wardrobe must!! Find a great pair and get them tailored to you if the cut isn’t perfect. It’s a inexpensive way to customise your wardrobe and it’s much cheaper than buying those Re/done Levi’s that are so hot right now. Vintage worn-in & thin t-shirts are always better to buy than those knock off ones everyone wears... much better character. Honestly, I would recommend buying any vintage piece since it’s usually made better than any modern piece (unless it’s higher end designer). But vintage pieces to buy with caution are those made from more fragile fabrics (dresses for example) - especially if you’re unsure of the condition or if the buyer does not disclose the condition when shopping online. If the item was well taken care of you can be sure it’s a better buy, but still be cautious. Personally, I would avoid buying vintage lingerie or undergarments for obvious reasons (except for slips!)

Q5 IF YOU HAD A BUDGET OF $300 TO GO VINTAGE SHOPPING, WHAT PIECES WOULD YOU PICK UP? Since I’m a t-shirt and jeans girl, if I had $300 dollars to go vintage shopping, I would buy a great pair of 70s Levi’s and some soft, thin t-shirts. Maybe a vintage sweater (since I’m always cold) and search for a vintage Coach bag. My collection is ever growing - they are the best bags ever!

INTERVIEW WITH ELLY MACGAW INTERIOR STYLIST AT LES INTERIEURS

HOW DID YOU MAKE YOUR START AS AN INTERIOR STYLIST? My role with Les Interieurs started about 18 months ago. Prior to this I was at fashion school and working as a fashion stylist, I travelled to Europe and I started to look at the world differently, I became fascinated with the spatial design. It was all about the timing, I started talking with Pamela (Owner of Les Interieurs Paddington) and when a new role had opened up and I was welcomed into the Les Interieurs team with open arms.

WHAT DOES YOUR ROLE INCLUDE? Les Interieurs is a rather small team but certainly packs a mean punch! Thankfully for me my role changes from day to day depending on the projects in the pipe line. Les Interieurs is an interior design and styling company with a retail store that also acts as a studio. My roles include assisting Pamela in large scale interior design that usually features in magazines like Vogue and Belle, managing the studio, home styling, buying and sourcing new and exciting products, and working with local and international artists and photographers to produce amazing work.

DESCRIBE YOUR DREAM APARTMENT DECOR:

WHAT DESIGN ‘AESTHETIC’ ARE YOU LOVING RIGHT NOW, FOR INTERIORS?

My dream apartment decor depends on the landscape of my surroundings, I believe interior and architecture should work in harmony with the land. I am a nature girl so a home amongst the trees really has my heart but on the other side I do love the buzz of cities like Barcelona and New York.

I love a minimalistic approach to architecture and design using simple materials with a natural colour pallet, its adding the art, texture and interesting artefacts that really make a home a home. My favourite aesthetic is when old meets new its that beautiful contrast that really does it for me!

Ricardo Bofill’s home in an old abandon cement factory would be a dream, then there is the Rick Joy’s New York studio that just kills it on another level!

IF YOU COULD OFFER ONE TIP FOR STYLING AN INTERIOR, WHAT WOULD IT BE? Nothing brings a room to life like a tree or plant, when it doubt add some exotic greenery!!

Who’s

THAT GIRL? Skipping that awkward phase, Inka Williams is not your average 16 year old. The Bali raised, Australian/ French model is the new IT girl. You may have seen her flawless features fronting campaigns for UNIF, Spell Designs or Supre or even in magazines such as Oyster or ELLE, but one place you will have definitely seen her is on social media. Being on the same level as Mimi Elashiry and Alexis Ren, Inka is the new fave for countless Tumblr and Instagram accounts.

BEFORE WE SAY GOODBYE

what we’re loving

In light of the New Year our current favourites are based on the countless resolutions that we create (and later forget!). Resolution number one: to be organised - for this we’ve been loving brands such as Kikki K and An Organised Life. Resolution number two: taking inspiration from LaPorte Space we aim to keep our spaces tidy and looking good! Resolution number three: by looking forward to an European summer, we aim create more everlasting experiences by attending festivals, going to places we’ve never been to before and to do things we never thought we would do!
