Welcome

Welcome This term, we’re building on the foundations of an awesome Spring and Summer programme that saw us discover some new favourites here at Dance Base. Most exciting of all is that the Parkour in our Easter and Summer Schools proved so popular that we’re making them a fully-fledged part of the programme. Turn straight to page 36 for this and our new Aerial dance classes for young dancers. Class numbers are restricted to 16, so get in quick to secure a place!

For adults, we’ve added a Dance Jukebox class to the programme (p24) – a high-energy hour of fun where you get to choose the music. So if there’s a song you’ve always wanted to dance to, this is your chance to make it happen! For our Ballet regulars, there’s an extra Intermediate class (page 14), so go on and turn that double pirouette into a triple! Our Cuban Salsa Improvers class is back, for those already on their way to a sizzling Son; and we’ve heard that you tappers wanted a Pre-Advanced class, so we’re very happy to say that can be found on page 29. All the faves of the last two terms are back: 80s Icons has a new home in our brochure under Jazz (page 23) and a new home in the schedule too! It’s now a mid-week treat, so no more waiting till the weekend for your fix. We are on it with the workshops too: Bhangra with the Edinburgh Bhangra Crew on page 12 and … wait for it … the ULTIMATE BOY BAND workshop on Sunday 14 September with Ashley Jack is going to be so brilliant we can’t even begin to describe it. You’ll just have to experience it yourselves!

Community Dance Base is a place where everyone can enjoy dancing. Get creative, be active, have fun! We take creative dance workshops and projects to schools, youth groups and community groups in the local area and beyond. Dance Fest 2014 is a new creative dance initiative for school groups from across Edinburgh and the Lothians that encourages young people to engage with the cultural legacy of the Commonwealth Games 2014. Dance Base will deliver 10 weekly sessions in 10 schools in the Lothians to explore the themes and the exciting energy of the Commonwealth Games, ending with a fantastic show at the Edinburgh Festival Theatre in 2015. Speaking of showtime – don’t forget to bring the whole family along to our Dance Base Christmas Show on the 6 and 7 December. Our classes will be showcasing all their hard work, it’s great fun, and it’s a chance for our community dance projects to show off too! If you or your young dancer is keen to perform professionally, Andy Cannon (Barrowland Ballet) and Macrobert Arts Centre are working on Tales of Grandson, a multi-generational show telling the story of Scotland … and they need YOU! If you’re aged between 8 and 80 and have enthusiasm and commitment in abundance, then Andy wants to hear from you! Performances are planned for the 25 & 26 October at the Festival Theatre Studio, with rehearsals during the week beginning 20 October. Watch our website for details or sign up to our d-mail newsletter to find out more about how to be involved. Lastly, we are looking for 10 Young Dance Champions over this next year. These youngsters will have access to Young Dance leadership training by their school and Dance Base, then go out there and champion dance in their local community, getting more people dancing. Current Projects Seated Swing

Dance Fest 2014

Dance keeps older people active and alert, both physically and mentally, and enhances their emotional and social wellbeing. For those older adults who can’t make it to us, we can take dance to them. Our 1920s-style Seated Swing classes are fun and energising and are specially designed to get toes tapping and hands clapping regardless of age or ability. We are currently working in three centres around Edinburgh but would love to get more people involved.

Dance Fest 2014 is a new dance initiative for school groups from across Edinburgh and the Lothians. A celebration of the culture and diversity of the Commonwealth Games, Dance Fest will bring together children and young people at the Edinburgh Festival Theatre in January 2015 to perform in a regional schools dance festival.

Supported by The Nancie Massey Charitable Trust

Early Years Dance lets children move freely and expressively. Dancing together with your child can help to build confidence and develop important motor and cognitive skills. We currently sing, dance and play with lots of Early Years groups throughout North Edinburgh and have recently started working with a group of marginalised young mums, helping them to discover the physical, emotional and social benefits of dancing with their children. Supported by Dance Base’s Lucky Ticket

Raising the aspirations of at-risk young people through an intensive programme of dance and education. This includes weekly classes, performances, attending professional rehearsals, attending theatre performances and learning about a healthy lifestyle. So in the next few months the group will be working with Edinburgh Community Food, Glasgow Parkour and taking part in national project, The Close, delivered by Scottish Ballet. We are delighted to announce that we received funding to continue the project until December 2014.

Everybody Dance Now! We are excited to be continuing our work with special schools in Edinburgh, running a series of dance and movement classes for disabled children. Each term we work with four different school groups, delivering a bespoke programme of dance, movement and music tailored to the needs of the school and the participants.

The Unusual Suspects Dance Base’s very own ‘boys only’ dance crew! This group is free and open to keen, young male dancers who want to take their dancing experience to a new level and get out there and perform. The group meets at Dance Base on Wednesday afternoons to work on varying styles of choreography from breakdance to contemporary. The group has recently performed at Dundee Rep Theatre and Y Dance Connections event in Edinburgh. Now they are working towards creating new work for Get Scotland Dancing. Supported by Get Scotland Dancing

Professional

Professional Programme Welcome to the Autumn Term, in which the professional programme celebrates the ripeness of years, attitude and thought. For our regular performance showcase we have invited the great Angus Balbernie to Edinburgh in November. Angus has chosen to lead daily sessions in just about everything for just about everyone. Slanted is the residency and showcase title. The showcase will be taking place on Saturday 15 November in Studio 1, at 20.00, with tickets costing a mere £5. We begin this term with a wonderful Finnish dance artist, Carl Knif. Carl is the first of many exchanges which we are proposing with Nordic partners. Then more proper grown-ups in the house with David Hughes Dance and Errol White both offering top-quality class, as are our many fine guests this autumn. The regular previews of the work our artists in residence develop are a wonderful insight into the professional process, so have a look at the schedule at dancebase.co.uk/residencies and see if you can come along to have a look. Lastly, we are at last launching our long dreamed of semi-professional dance company for over 60s. It’s called Prime, it’s coming this autumn and it’s going to be radical: watch the website for details: dancebase.co.uk/prime. I confess to being immaturely dizzy with delight about the whole fantastic autumnal line-up.

Morag Deyes MBE Artistic Director

We’ve developed a baby dance class for both mums and babies to enjoy together. Incorporating stimulation and one-to-one interaction using sensory props, music and baby yoga. This also gives parents a chance to stretch and enjoy movement with their babies. Research now shows that the major learning period is in the first 18 months of life – what better way to learn than through an explosion of colour, sound and rhythm to stimulate your baby and aid cognitive development.

Using songs, movement and play, children will be encouraged to move freely and expressively in this fun and energetic class. Working together with your child, you will stomp, jump, wriggle and giggle together, helping young dancers to develop important motor skills such as balance and co-ordination, in a creative and imaginative way. Parents attend with children.

Young Dancers

Dance School with a Difference We don’t do exams or follow a syllabus – we’re all about fun, creativity and trying different dance styles so children can discover dance for themselves in an out-of-school setting. It’s about choice and challenge, encouraging every child to go on their dance journey with us. There are three age-specific stages, with choices of dance style in each, so you can progress with one style over time or try something new every term!
