WELCOME Contents

What a fabulous term we have in store for you. First, we‘re delighted to report that when you ask, we listen – and because we do, an even more gorgeous extra half hour of Ballet Vintage awaits you on Tuesday mornings. And, if you’re an over-60s jazz bunny (slightly less agile, but no less adventurous) then Jo Richards will be leading All that Jazz on Wednesdays – more step-ball-change than pas de bourée, but just as much fun.

Welcome

Jo has another new class – WERK IT!, which kinda speaks for itself, and then there’s additional Aerial Skills on Saturdays for those of you bored with the floor. We know the Party Playlist for dancers with additional support needs will be huge, anarchic fun, as will brand new Acrobalance with Circus Alba on Thursday evenings. Watch out Cirque du Soleil. Workshops this term revisit a big hit of last autumn – so good we had to bring it back: Ultimate Boy Band II is too much fun, and guess what? You don’t HAVE to be a boy. Or a band. But for our wedding workshop (Save the First Dance), we do expect more of a commitment – you have to be at least thinking of getting married!

COMMUNITY At Dance Base, we believe that dance is for everyone, and that’s why we strive to provide high quality, positive dance experiences in both our wonderful building and in the community. As we begin the New Year and another term of exciting dance opportunities, we look forward to our Easter School for 7-12 years olds, who will be working on their dance moves and getting creative with animation and circus skills. As always, the Easter School culminates in a performance for friends and families so do come along at the end of the week (Friday 17 April). I’ll be out and about loads this term at Edinburgh’s schools as part of Dance Quest (see page 5) – on Wednesday 14 January the Festival Theatre will be hosting a fantastically exciting regional schools dance festival as part of this project. Come along if you can! If you’d like more details on any of our community projects or would like to get involved, don’t hesitate to contact me using the email address below. CURRENT PROJECTS Seated Swing

Dance Quest 2014

Dance keeps older people active and alert, both physically and mentally, and enhances their emotional and social wellbeing. For those older adults who can’t make it to us, we can take dance to them. Our 1920s-style Seated Swing classes are fun and energising and are specially designed to get toes tapping and hands clapping regardless of age or ability. We are currently working in three centres around Edinburgh but would love to get more people involved.

Dance Quest 2014 is a new dance initiative for school groups from across Edinburgh and the Lothians. A celebration of the culture and diversity of the Commonwealth Games, Dance Quest will bring together children and young people at the Edinburgh Festival Theatre on Wednesday 14 January 2015 to perform in a regional schools dance festival.

Supported by The Nancie Massey Charitable Trust

Everybody Dance Now! We are excited to be continuing our work with special schools in Edinburgh, running a series of dance and movement classes for disabled children. Each term we work with four different school groups, delivering a bespoke programme of dance, movement and music tailored to the needs of the school and the participants.

Raising the aspirations of at-risk young people through an intensive programme of dance and education. This includes weekly classes, sessions with a variety of guest choreographers, performances, attending professional rehearsals, attending theatre performances and learning about a healthy lifestyle. So in the next few months the group will be working with Edinburgh Community Food.

The Unusual Suspects Dance Base’s very own ‘boys only’ dance crew! This group is free and open to keen, young male dancers who want to take their dancing experience to a new level and get out there and perform. The group meets at Dance Base on Wednesday afternoons to work on varying styles of choreography from breakdance to contemporary. The group has recently performed at Dundee Rep Theatre and YDance Connections event in Edinburgh. Now they are working towards creating new work for Get Scotland Dancing. PROFESSIONAL PROGRAMME The New Year and the freshness of the first term is always exciting but this one is especially glorious. It heralds a new beginning for older dancers, with the launch of Prime (see below) and a welcome back to Gary Clarke, one of the UK's leading contemporary dance artists, and a force of nature! Our termly professional showcase will take place on Saturday 14 February, will be fuelled by that amazing Clarke energy and is called Senses. More firsts, in the shape of global meanderings: as part of our ongoing motivation to keep the doors to and from Scotland open between artists, we are teaming up with the Nordic lands and India for professional exchanges and residencies. At home, let’s enjoy Alan Greig (whom many of you will know from our contemporary classes) and his new work on the theme of Goddesses – hopefully to be seen at this year's Mela. Much-loved dance artists Igor and Moreno come out to play in Scotland for the first time and we look forward to getting to know them, along with Jasper Dzuki. Joan Clevillé and Frank Koenen. Those last two you may recognise from Scottish Dance Theatre, are also in residence this term. Claire Pencak is the lucky recipient of a beautiful Dreamtime residency in the Scottish Borders. Almost every single one of these excellent artists has a studio showing here at Dance Base, so please do check out the listings in our professional dance brochure; come along to see what they have been getting up to and share your thoughts and responses to the work.

THE LIFE OF

PRIME

Born from the huge success of our Golden classes over the last three years, Prime is the first semi-professional dance group for over 60s in Scotland. Ripe, feisty and wise ... this group of over 60s begin their creative journey in February with artistic director Morag Deyes, who will choreograph the first work in collaboration with the dancers. This group will challenge preconceptions of elders, encourage us all to throw aside the proverbial knitting and get busy in the dance studio. If you are physically confident, have had some dance or physical theatre experience and are up for a challenge – which will include performing – come and join the residency week and see what's happening at the beginning of Prime’s life. For details of the open audition to join this group, please see our professional dance brochure. I page 6

If you decide on Package 2, your final session will allow you to consolidate what you’ve learned in a more social setting, and give you a chance to practise your specially-chosen dance. Former International Ballroom and Latin Champion, Dawn-Claire Robertson, will be leading the classes in a relaxed, fun, social environment. There will be time for couples to get advice on music choice, dancing in heels (and much more) during each session, and we’ll treat you to cakes and bubbly too. A photographer will be present throughout each workshop so you can add your First Dance lessons to your wedding album! For more information, go to dancebase.co.uk/firstdance I page 10

Young Dancers

Exploring your child’s natural physicality can not only be important to their development, but can be a great bonding experience for you both. These early years classes are designed to be fun, sensory and build confidence with expressive movement. Obviously when we say mums, we mean mums, dads, and anyone lucky enough to have time to spend with a baby dancer, can join these sessions! Wear loose, comfortable clothing and bare feet. For hip hop, wear trainers. Find out more about kids classes at dancebase.co.uk

Thu 8 Jan – Thu 26 Mar I 13.00 – 13.45 I Roberta Beakbane

Wed 7 Jan – Wed 25 Mar I 10.45 – 11.30 I Gemma Williams

We’ve developed a baby dance class for both mums and babies to enjoy together. Incorporating stimulation and one-to-one interaction using sensory props, music and baby yoga. This also gives parents a chance to stretch and enjoy movement with their babies. Research now shows that the major learning period is in the first 18 months of life – what better way to learn than through an explosion of colour, sound and rhythm to stimulate your baby and aid cognitive development.

Using songs, movement and play, children will be encouraged to move freely and expressively in this fun and energetic class. Working together with your child, you will stomp, jump, wriggle and giggle together, helping young dancers to develop important motor skills such as balance and co-ordination, in a creative and imaginative way. Parents attend with children.

Baby Steps Café

for Baby Steps Participants Thu 13.45 – 15.00

Spending time with other parents and babies is important too, so we’re creating an informal baby café after each session. We’ll provide tea, cake and biscuits for parents and toys for babies. A great chance to relax together in our sensory play area. Donations go to support our community projects.

This class will offer young dancers the opportunity to hop, bound, run, dive, leap, turn, kick and stretch. Creative dance uses rhythm and movement, giving young dancers the chance to express ideas through their bodies and develop self-confidence and social skills in a relaxed and fun environment. Parents attend with children. Toddlers and preschool prices are for one adult and one child – bring an extra child or adult for £1.50 more.

Young Dancers

Dance School with a Difference We don’t do exams or follow a syllabus – we’re all about fun, creativity and trying different dance styles so children can discover dance for themselves in an out-of-school setting. It’s about choice and challenge, encouraging every child to go on their dance journey with us. There are three age-specific stages, with choices of dance style in each, so you can progress with one style over time or try something new every term!
