welcome summer term 2014 Welcome to the Summer term, bringing with it the season of warmth and light and an amazing collection of talents into the studios, from Laban to Cunningham via a bit of rhythm tap (see Bill Evans on page 13), as well as a showcase headed up by the great Henri Oguike. Playground is on page 6. I’m thrilled to say these showcases are part of our regular calendar now. Keep an eye on the pro d-mail for the callout. Looking at our timetable, it’s lovely to see Maïté Delafin back in the house, and then in May, the renegades from Golden, our fabulous elders group. They are … Dynamode. See page 14 for more details. Ross Cooper is down from the Isle of Skye where he is in dancer in residence, and – for two weeks only – is part of the Edinburgh Choreographic Project. Sally Owen is much loved and has been devoted to Scottish Dance Theatre for many years, so welcome to Dance Base, Sally and don’t miss her great company classes. In fact, don’t miss any of them – all for free, and twice weekly. That’s a little bit of a lie, because the week beginning the 5 May sees Rupert Thomson, director of Summerhall, substituting company class on Thu 8 May with a splendid writing workshop. Rupert is here in residence with the wondrous Dudendance. So swap the legwarmer for the jotter and you’re good to go. Application process is on page 8, and the studio will be open and free that morning if you would prefer come and shake a leg. Please share anything you like with me about what we offer, what we don’t offer, and if there are dance houses you feel we should partner with. Have a great summer!

HENRI OGUIKE RESIDENCY 23 – 28 JUNE
Are we what we think? This will be the first stepping-stone into the Playground. The Playground is an idea that aims to promote creative learning. For over a decade, I have accumulated a wealth of experience through research and practice resulting in a framework I call Point – Network – Relations or just simply Point. Point refers to the journey/process from the fragile to the potent. Network, is the discovery of form and Relations observes and considers the chaos. There are further parts within the system; they act as modules for the artist to use as a guide towards their creative potential. Playground offers the chance to observe familiar patterns in the way you work, create or play. An opportunity to discover new modes of thought, encouraging untouched potential from within. I believe everyone should benefit, regardless of any differences, and the Playground will encourage the individual to tap into their physical, creative and emotional potential.’ THIS GREAT EXPERIENCE IS FREE FOR YOU! To apply: email your CV and a link to a video of you dancing to morag@dancebase.co.uk and be sure to copy to helen@dancebase.co.uk Include a covering letter explaining why you want to participate in Playground and what you hope to gain from being there. Your application will be forwarded to Henri Oguike. Deadline is 16 May 2014. Decision and confirmation by 23 May.

un dó I moshi moshi The words moshi moshi are used by Japanese people when answering the phone and can sometimes be used to get someone's attention. It can roughly be translated as ‘hello’. Our personal interest in improving our lives has led us recently to the discovery of non-violent communication. Our choices are always sending some kind of message to the world. As recipients we are not always able to understand the message, but we keep communicating all the time. How we communicate and the way we interpret the messages we receive says about who we are and what we want and need in life. This residency will be a movement based exploration about different aspects of the communication process.

Tamsyn Russell Purging Suite #1 & New Work In the first week, Tamsyn will be working on a solo, Purging Suite #1, which was developed in New Zealand with choreographer, Sarah Foster-Sproull, supported by Creative Scotland. Research into concepts of human re-birth introduced Russell and Foster-Sproull to American Quaker, Jemima Wilkinson (1752–1819). Ideas/images surrounding rebirth, psychic channelling, illusion, auras, darkness and succumbing to ‘the will of something/someone else’ were explored to populate the choreography within this work.

RESIDENCY 21 APRIL – 2 MAY
During the second week, Tamsyn and dancers will be exploring the idea of what it takes to achieve success. Asking the question: how do we become successful? Drawing on personal experiences to create imagery and explore a unique movement vocabulary based on this concept.
Company Class Thu 24 April & 1 May I 10.00 – 11.30 Class will be devised to move the body in an organized and efficient way, focusing on strong floor work and clarity of movement.

Cultured Mongrel Dance Theatre Pending Confirmation Pending several funding decisions this studio time may be used for a lot of things, if funding is unsuccessful it will still be used for these things but potentially in an altogether different capacity. At the time of writing – who knows? There will be movement, there will likely be spoken word and most of all there will be a lot of time 'consolidating practice.' There will be at least one performer but possibly up to five.
Company Class Tue 29 April I 10.00 – 11.30
Cultured Mongrel is the umbrella for the creative practice of contemporary/hip hop practitioner Emma Jayne Park. In March 2014 she will be presenting new work at Sadler’s Wells following a period of mentorship with Jonathan Burrows, facilitated by Breakin’ Convention. This will undoubtedly inspire what happens here.
Advanced dancers from both contemporary and hip hop movement backgrounds are invited to explore a highly physical and momentum driven class built from elements of both practices.

Rupert Thomson, Paul Rous & Clea Wallis On Monsters and Possible Monsters Writer and performance-maker Rupert Thomson is interested in monsters. Creatures of our imagination, monsters are also well-known, and feared, for their physical attributes. This residency sees Thomson collaborating with experimental dance and physical theatre artists Paul Rous and Clea Wallis, and the subject of monsters is a perfect avenue for them to explore themes of concept and reality, movement and text. Another aspect of many monsters – such as minotaurs and chimeras – is that of hybridity. When forms are combined the results are often horrifying, but powerful and memorable. And yet, how much of our lived experience is not to some extent hybridised? How much are we ever un-tainted, free of monstrosity, ourselves? This is an early phase of research towards a planned performance for 2014, supported by Edinburgh International Science Festival, Dance Base and Summerhall.
Company Class Thu 8 May I 10.00 – 11.30 Join writer and venue programmer Rupert Thomson (Artistic Director, Summerhall) for a class on writing and editing text to describe your work. This is an advice session to aid professional dancers and choreographers in describing their work, articulating their ideas, and pitching to venues and other potential supporters. This class has a limited capacity if you would like to attend please look at our website for further information of how to apply.

This residency is the first R&D phase of a new dance theatre project. It the ash trees, and the disease that has been affecting them, at its heart. There is an incredibly captivating mythology around this ‘tree of life’, as it is known in Norse mythology, which also involves lots of animals and fairies ... We are going to investigate the dramaturgy of this mythology and its expression through movement in the studio. Different dance forms will be investigated, possibly including tribal dances. As the strength of the tree comes from its rootedness, we will explore this idea in relation to people’s roots, and ask ourselves: what makes us strong? What are our roots?
Company Class Thu 15 & 22 May I 10.00 – 11.30 Company class will be led improvisation based around the themes of the residency. Open to dancers and non-dancers alike.

Sally Owen Ratatatat! After creating What on Earth for Scottish Dance Theatre, Sally Owen is hoping to clarify and broaden her thoughts about making engaging, resonant, and relevant dance-theatre for young people. She, and her highly-skilled collaborators, will consider how to blend articulate narrative movement material, with the clarity of slapstick humour and real human warmth. Using elements of dance, clowning and physical theatre, they will start to develop ideas for a new children's work, Ratatatat! A tubby old rat lives happily in a grubby heap of rubbish. Her life changes forever when two younger, more worldly rats move in! Through the exploits of these three characters, we explore the themes of inclusion, exclusion, the need for love and food, living, dancing, ageing, dying ...

mysteryskin Devotion This piece will celebrate the alchemic and ancient relationship between music and dance via contemporary female artists. My practice centres on the idea of framing exceptional performers’ presence and their sensitive manipulation of and engagement with the body. I plan to extend this notion into working with music artists, their unique practices and instrumentation techniques. I will work with a group of five independent artists, each distinctive and progressive in their own discipline and their individual attributes, personalities and professional histories will be key in creating a form together. The theme of work in different cultures will be a constant thread within this project. This is supported by Dance Limerick, Arts Council England, Dartington.
