Welcome

Contents

Welcome After an extremely busy spring term, you’d think we’d take a more relaxed approach to summer. However, as the city heats up (hopefully!), so does our programme. We’ve packed our schedule with our most popular classes and some slight re-workings of classic workshops too. If you’re a Gene Kelly fan, you won’t want to miss page 12, and if you’ve got a hectic ‘wedding season’ coming up, our FIRST DANCE workshop will have you waltzing like a pro! With ballet as popular as ever, we’re adding a Modern Ballet class for even more varity, and – due to overwhelming demand – an extra Ballet Vintage class with Vincent Hantam. For the over 60s new to Dance Base, our Golden classes are FREE and give you the chance to try a range of styles over the term. For our younger dancers, Creative Dance classes are now available as a drop-in as well, to give you more flexibility. Make sure you check out our Summer School too for children aged 7 to 12 … an exciting mix of dance, Parkour and graffiti to occupy the first two weeks in July.

Community Dance Base’s Community Dance Programme is fully inclusive, working with a diverse range of people of all ages, backgrounds and abilities. We create opportunities for people to be able to see, make and take part in high-quality dance within their local community and on a national level. We take creative dance workshops and projects to schools, youth and community groups in the local area and beyond. Groups and individuals can also access classes, professional residencies and performances in our award-winning building in the Grassmarket. This year is shaping up to be a very busy and exciting time for Community Dance in Scotland. With the launch of Get Scotland Dancing (see opposite) and the new Government Youth Arts Strategy – Time to Shine – our main focus will be on participation. We’re hosting a virtual haka this summer – make sure you’re part of it! We will continue to work with the most vulnerable groups and individuals in our community, supporting their learning, confidence and health through dance, but we will also open our doors to those who have never danced before, offering them unique opportunities and experiences to put their best foot forward, and Get Dancing! If you’d like to help us to continue and expand our community programme, simply buy a Lucky Ticket (see dancebase.co.uk/luckyticket for more info.) For details of some of the projects Lucky Ticket supports, see page 6. To find out more or to get involved with the Community Dance Programme, please feel free to contact me at amy@dancebase.co.uk. Community

Get Scotland Dancing Get Scotland Dancing encourages more people to get active and get involved in dance. Supported by the Scottish Government, Get Scotland Dancing is part of the legacy of The Commonwealth Games and celebrates dance in Scotland, bringing together those who already have a passion for dance and those who have never danced before. As a National Dance Agency, Dance Base has a fun-packed programme of workshops, performances and events that the whole family can enjoy – including The Big Dance Pledge, led by Scottish Ballet, which gives you the chance to learn, make and perform a dance with the rest of the world! Go to bigdance.org.uk to find out more! You’ll be able to see some of the responses in the ‘Inspired by the Pledge’ section, including a fabulous routine from Central Taxis!

Get Scotland Dancing Weekend 14 – 15 June 2014 Events will include: community classes/workshops, a performance stage in the Grassmarket, a Dance-Along movie, Dance Through the Decades extravaganza, family-focused ‘Tryathon’ at Meadowbank Sports Centre, and a free evening of music and dance at the Ross Band Stand to celebrate the Queen’s Baton Relay. For more info or full listings of events and how to get involved, email amy@dancebase.co.uk or check the community notice board and the community dance pages of the website.

Current Community Projects

Seated Swing

Breakin’ It Down

Dance keeps older people active and alert, both physically and mentally, and enhances their emotional and social wellbeing. For those older adults who can’t make it to us, we can take dance to them. Our 1920s-style Seated Swing classes are fun and energising and are specially designed to get toes tapping and hands clapping regardless of age or ability. We are currently working in three centres around Edinburgh but would love to get more people involved.

In partnership with The State CIC, a hip hop education organisation, we are visiting schools in North Edinburgh to deliver break dance taster sessions. We are taking a different approach to engaging young people in dance activity – sessions are delivered by a youth worker and a dance tutor to ensure everyone gets the support they need to make the most of their chance to dance! All those involved are now attending weekly classes at Dance Base. At the end of the project the young people will put on a show for friends, family and the local community to demonstrate their new skills.

Supported by The Nancie Massey Charitable Trust

Early Years Dance lets children move freely and expressively. Dancing together with your child can help to build confidence and develop important motor and cognitive skills. We currently sing, dance and play with lots of Early Years groups throughout North Edinburgh and have recently started working with a group of marginalised young mums, helping them to discover the physical, emotional and social benefits of dancing with their children. Supported by Dance Base’s Lucky Ticket

Raising the aspirations of at-risk young people through an intensive programme of dance and education. This includes weekly classes, performances, attending professional rehearsals, attending theatre performances and learning about a healthy lifestyle. So in the next few months the group will be working with Edinburgh Community Food, Glasgow Parkour and taking part in national project, The Close, delivered by Scottish Ballet. We are delighted to announce that we have just received funding from CashBack for Communtities to continue this work for another year.

The Unusual Suspects Everybody Dance Now! We are excited to be continuing our work with special schools in Edinburgh, running a series of dance and movement classes for disabled children. Each term we work with four different school groups, delivering a bespoke programme of dance, movement and music tailored to the needs of the school and the participants.

Dance Base’s very own ‘boys only’ dance crew! This group is free and open to keen, young male dancers who want to take their dancing experience to a new level and get out there and perform. The group meets at Dance Base on Wednesday afternoons to work on varying styles of choreography from breakdance to contemporary. The group has recently performed at Dundee Rep Theatre and Y Dance Connections event in Edinburgh. Now they are working towards creating new work for Get Scotland Dancing. Supported by Get Scotland Dancing

Welcome to the Summer term, bringing with it the season of warmth and light and an amazing collection of talents into our professional residency studios. Please do come along to our professional showcase, Playground, on the 28 June to see what some of the best have been up to. I’m thrilled to say these showcases are now part of our regular calendar. In the open-minded spirit which embodies Dance Base, we have invited the renegades from Golden – our fabulous elders group – to join us in the professional studio. Dynamode, as they are now called, are mashing up all your stereotypes about ageing, much like our other autonomous group, 24 Carat.

Professional

Professional Programme

Indeed, there’s also an open invitation to our free studio showings almost every Friday throughout the term. They are so varied and a real insight into how artists work. Find out what’s on at dancebase.co.uk/residencies. We will soon be revealing all about our international, fabulous (and always surprising!) Festival Fringe programme. There will be professional classes too, so keep your eye on all the updates. Enjoy your summer (dancing) in the city and all that Dance Base has to offer you.

Morag Deyes MBE Artistic Director

Dance Base offers residencies to professional choreographers, companies and individual artists who want to develop their work. Residencies last one or two weeks and artists are invited to share their work in the FRIDAY FREEVIEW, a free showing, then Q&A with the artist. Come along and see what our pro dancers are up to! dancebase.co.uk/residencies

Young Dancers

Dance School with a Difference We don’t do exams or follow a syllabus – we’re all about fun, creativity and trying different dance styles so children can discover dance for themselves in an out-of-school setting. It’s about choice and challenge, encouraging every child to go on their dance journey with us. There are three age-specific stages, with choices of dance style in each, so you can progress with one style over time or try something new every term!
