WELCOME Spring term 2015 The new year and the freshness of the first term is always exciting but this one is especially glorious: it heralds a new beginning for older dancers with the launch of Prime and a welcome back to Gary Clarke, a force of nature! The showcase this term on the 14 February, will be fuelled by that Clarke energy, and is called Senses (page 10). More firsts, in the shape of globally-impressive wanderings: as part of our ongoing motivation to keep the doors to and from Scotland open between artists, we are teaming up with the Nordic lands and India for exchanges and residencies. See Ian Spink heading for Copenhagen’s Danserhallerne (page 6) and Charlotte Jarvis absorbing the atmosphere and culture of the Attakkalari Centre in Bangalore (page 19). These journeys can be so inspiring, to explore inside and out what 'environment' can be and what it can do. Stay tuned to the professional newsletter to find out more. At home, let’s enjoy Alan Greig getting to know some Goddesses (page 14) and, we hope, taking them to this year’s Mela. Much-loved artists Igor and Moreno come out to play in Scotland for the first time (page 16) – we look forward to getting to know them, and Jasper Džuki (introduced to us by Cultured Mongrel and on page 12). Joan Clevillé and Frank Koenen, who you may recognise from Scottish Dance Theatre, are also in residence this term (pages 16 & 18), and Claire Pençak is the lucky recipient of some beautiful Dream Time in the Scottish Borders (page 18). Almost every single one of these excellent artists have studio showings so please do check out the listings; come along to see what they have been getting up to and share your thoughts and responses to the work.

NEW NORDIC CONNECTIONS Image courtesy of Ian Spink

Dance Base in Edinburgh and Danserhallerne in Copenhagen are bound by a shared mission to make space for movement to take shape, and for the pathways between Scotland and Denmark to have creative value for artists who dig deep into how the body communicates. In the first of many Nordic/Scottish exchange residencies, both houses are delighted to begin this evolving journey by introducing Ian Spink and Airfield to Denmark. Ian Spink is exploring an idea – the effects of putting three famous (and idiosyncratic) composers together in the same room. They had a profound effect on dance makers from the moment their sounds were unleashed. airfieldarts.org.uk The composers never met, but are connected by their music, vision and remarkable bloody individuality. They are: John Cage – Merce Cunningham’s lover – mushroom collector, proponent of chance structures in music, great cook. Hildegarde von Bingen – visionary 10th century Abbess, composer and healer in Germany. Moondog – blind musician, composer. Wearing horned headgear and creating his own instruments, he chose to spend his time sleeping and performing in the streets of NYC. Hilda was a great herbalist, creating manuscripts about her visions. She devised a 'secret language' for use in her convent. Some theories have her visions related to attacks of migraine. Moondog was blind and thought he should be a Viking (he probably was). He was eventually rescued and taken to Germany. Hilda gave lectures around Germany. John Cage discovered a way to subvert contemporary dance and music which would send it into orbit for 30 years, in the same way perhaps that quantum/string theory was able to mess with our sense of time and place.

There will be the opportunity share findings to peers and Dance Base visitors and to invite and encourage feedback. ARRIVING This residency is offered to a choreographer, company or individual who wishes to take an already-developed idea to the next stage and premiere their work in a theatre or site specific space. “Residency time like this is of enormous value and has had great impact on my ability to develop artistically; it allowed me space to challenge my working methods without fear of failure & gave me time to address ways of integrating this into my daily practice.” Emma Jayne Park, Cultured Mongrel Dance Theatre HOW TO APPLY

The 100 Hands / Jasper Džuki Jelen & Mojra Vogelnik-Škerlj New Work Jasper Džuki Jelen (NL/SI) & Mojra Vogelnik-Škerlj (SI) are co-directors of The 100 Hands. Their organisation creates staged performances, site-specific works and installations for audience participation. Their work is characterised by high physicality, touch and intimacy and appeals to audiences of diverse ages. During our residency we will explore: • How people share spaces during a performance (performers with each other and performers with the audience). • How the shape and size of these shared spaces stimulate certain dynamics between people (audience and performers alike). • How these dynamics can be used to enhance the experience of the audience, as well as the dramatic potential of the performance.

Company Class Thursday 8 & 15 January I 10.00 – 11.30

We will work on grounded movement, off-balance situations and physical collaboration through touch. Come with a good spirit and bare feet.

Lucy Suggate The Body of Discontent A research residency undertaken by artist Lucy Suggate. Throughout history the dancing body has been a vehicle to express our deepest human needs. The premise is to examine ‘dance as a radical act’ using the enduring relationship between dance and music. This research will draw upon events, such as ‘Choreomania’, the dancing phenomena of 16th century female land workers driven to dance for days to examine how music and dance are catalysts for the emancipation of body and soul and the phenomenon of Trance. I will be using the music of electronic composer Holden; his sprawling soundscapes provide me with an exploratory framework to delve into aspects of repetition, duration and their transformative qualities. Using the ‘beat’ to examine the impact this has on my moving body from hypnotic to the euphoric states and the immersive potential for those who are witnessing it.

RESIDENCY 19 – 23 JANUARY

Company Class Thursday 22 January I 10.00 – 11.30 Looking at what kind of poetry your name might inspire, we take a title and write our own dance poem. Bring a picture of a place that you feel says something about yourself.

RESIDENCY 26 JANUARY – 6 FEBRUARY

Xena Gusthart Dis.Able 'Dis' – a prefix changing the meaning of a term to its negative. 'Able' – having a significant power or resource to accomplish something; having the necessary power and resources, skills, time, opportunity to do something; capable, competent, talented. Xena will take inspiration from the emotions and movement inspired by the definitions of the words 'Dis' and 'Able'. Exploring these definitions through spoken word and a blend of contemporary and hip hop movement to convey her own experience of these words.

Company Class Tuesdays 27 January & 3 February I 10.00 – 11.30 Xena will lead a class using some of the material generated from her research with a focus on hip hop movement. Funded by: Creative Scotland, Lisa Ullman FREEVIEW I Friday 6 February I 16.00 Fund, Liverpool Institute of Performing Arts

RESIDENCY 26 – 30 JANUARY

Fuora Dance Project (Federica Esposito & Giulia Montalbano) New Work Fuora Dance Project, led by Federica Esposito and Giulia Montalbano, will develop a new creation inspired by Molly Bloom’s monologue taken from the masterpiece Ulysses by James Joyce. The monologue is a supreme example of the so-called stream of consciousness characterised by lack of punctuation and the traditional structure of the sentence. The chapter opens with a ‘Yes’ and ends in the same way. It is an affirmation of love, sensuality and life and also, but not less important, of the female creative energy. The idea is to create a piece inspired by the concepts of streams, female energy, smells, gazes, and male-female relationships.

Company Class Thursday 29 January I 10.00 – 11.30 The class will be focused on release technique dealing with the use of weight, strength, off-balance and fluidity.

RESIDENCY 2 – 13 FEBRUARY

Alan Greig Dance Theatre Goddess (working title) Alan Greig Dance Theatre will be in the studio to research the theme of ‘Goddess’. This women-based project will work with an intergenerational cast of six leading Scottish based female dancers. The research has the eccentric juxtaposition of being led by a gay male choreographer on the subject of goddess, myth, ritual and world culture beliefs. From this research it is hoped to develop the ideas into a new production for 2015.

Company Class Thursdays 5 & 12 February I 10.00 – 11.30 The class will incorporate elements of Cunningham and Nikolais technique and will include elements of improvisation. A thorough warm up, creative explorations and travelling sequences; the emphasis will be on warming up our minds and bodies ready to explore and research in the studio. Adv/Pro level.

Ellen Bartel Dance Collective New Work I am Ellen Bartel from Austin, Texas, I wish to use my time at this residency to develop a practice I am calling ‘Devising non-fiction dance’; that is, inventing movement from text and memory for an alternative space (or theatre) with the purpose of telling an autobiographical story through dance. All of the elements mesh together in ways that create both a conventionally linear story and a collage, for maximum creative impact and meaning.

RESIDENCY 16 – 20 FEBRUARY

I am seeking dancers to work with me throughout the week in exploring ‘Devising non-fiction dance’; if you are interested in being involved please get in touch: ellen.bartel@ebdc.us

Company Class Tuesday 17 February I 10.00 – 11.30 Through the use of improvisation and contact work this class for advanced dancers aims to explore the connection between covering space while still remaining grounded.

RESIDENCY 23 FEBRUARY – 6 MARCH

Tamsyn Russell In the hearts of humans During the first week of this residency Tamsyn will research movement material and images in the studio to delve deeper into her process of making. In the second week she will research these processes with dancers expanding on movement material, images and thought. She will be researching/exploring the unique features of being human and questioning or compelling the audience to reflect on themselves. Through her work she exposes private thoughts and ideologies and reflect the complexities and idiosyncrasies that determine what it is to be human. She examine different human behaviours and challenge popular stereotypes.

Company Class Thursdays 26 February & 5 March I 10.00 – 11.30 Class will be devised to move the body in an organised and efficient way, focusing on strong floor work and clarity of movement. We will move in and out of the floor and through space using momentum and challenging ourselves with phrases.

Joan Clevillé Plan B for Utopia Why do we live how we live? Is this the best of living together, or have we lost our capacity of imagining different worlds, different ways of doing things? Why are we so stuck? Have we forgotten how to dream and how to play?' Plan B for Utopia is a new full-length dance theatre work by Dundee-based choreographer Joan Clevillé, exploring the role of hope, imagination and struggle in our personal and collective lives. Featuring two extraordinary and charismatic performers, the work is a playful and original combination of dance, theatre and storytelling.

Company Class Tuesday 3 March I 10.00 – 11.30 Company class will explore the relation between breath, voice and movement, and longer sequences of choreographic material.

RESIDENCY 9 – 13 MARCH

Igor and Moreno Spot The Difference (working title) Spot the Difference (working title) is the new work by London-based duo Igor and Moreno and The Place, London, in collaboration with Aoife McAtamney. The work deals with themes of similarity, difference, belonging and uniqueness. In Spot the Difference Moreno and Aoife, with Igor creating with them from the outside, perform alongside each other; and although they are completely different, they will look confusingly similar to reflect upon what unifies them and what differentiates them, where difference and similarity lie and how they can be revealed. This residency is part of a series of residencies around Europe echoing the concept of the project, to look at the similarities and differences of these places and let these inform the work.

Company Class Tuesday 10 March I 10.00 – 11.30 The class focuses on warming up from the inside outwards, exercising group awareness and exploring musicality with body and voice.

RESIDENCY 16 – 20 MARCH

Rhiana Laws New Work My work focuses on taking dance into prisons, engaging with groups and preparing them to perform to a high standard in a short period of time – but what would my choreographic voice look like if I challenged myself to make a piece of work for a prison audience to watch, instead of dance themselves? What would I say, and how would I say it? Do I dance, or does somebody else? Can I find a way to frame two different dance styles and song on stage cohesively? I hope to explore these questions alongside and in collaboration with, hip hop artist Ashley Jack (we have co-delivered five prison projects to date) and Mima Thewes, an Edinburgh-based singer and musician.

Company Class Tuesday 3 March I I 10.00 – 11.30

Song, contemporary dance and hip hop – we will share some principals of our exploration and offer an insight to our prison-based movement practice. Suitable for dancers and performers with a movement background.

RESIDENCY 23 – 27 MARCH

KaSt Dance Company Constricted Abandon Artistic Director Steven Martin will create a series of works on the same two dancers over a four-year period to show the progression in them as people, dancers and their ever-changing relationship towards each other. The work stems from two dancers who are not only friends but have danced together for a long period of time. This create honesty in the work that audiences warmed to well. The first work, Tete a Tete was created on dancers Michaela Gebremedhin Wate and Joel Wilson between June 2013 and March 2014 and is currently being performed as part of KaSt Dance Company’s Repertoire. This residency will begin the research, exploration and initial structuring of the second work Constricted Abandon, in which the dancers will approach the same relationship from a different point in time and from a completely new emotional and physical angle. Movement vocabulary, music and colour scheme will all be approached differently , however, elements of the original will be developed, to keep the works connected.

Company Class Tuesday 24 March I 10.00 – 11.30 KaSt Company Class will be a highly physical, full-bodied approach to release technique, incorporating the company's dynamic style.

RESIDENCY 23 – 27 MARCH

Frank Koenen Shocked fox The residency will be based around the idea of decisions. How do dancers and performers take decisions in the rehearsal process and on stage? I also want to research on the topic of instinct. What are the human natural instincts? Both in the context of daily life and from the dance perspective. These ideas will come together as we ask – what do our instincts have to do with the decisions we take? Brought back to the image of a fox! Foxes have been represented in many items of literature and myths and always have strong characteristic qualities like clever problem solving, tricking others and strong instinct. The fox and the way it moves, behaves and lives.

Company Class Thursday 26 March I 10.00 – 11.30 Elements of the class will be floor work, stretching, strengthening and released-based sequences. Participants should have intermediate dance experience.

DREAM TIME – STUDIO ON THE GREEN, SELKIRK RESIDENCY 23 – 27 MARCH

Tabula Rasa Humming the Hexagon In the company of dancer Tim Rubidge and artist book-maker Helen Douglas, choreographer Claire Pençak will be developing a choreographic score for Humming the Hexagon – a new mixed media performance work. The residency will draw on a collection of research materials including interviews with beekeepers, sound and film documentation, wax and objects gathered through a Leverhulme Trust Artist Residency in The Centre for Rural Economy, Newcastle University 2012. Humming the Hexagon is a Tabula Rasa Collaboration.

Company Class Tuesday 24 March I 10.00 – 11.30 The workshop will explore improvisation structures being developed during the residency. Some previous movement improvisation experience is preferable. Other creative practitioners are welcomes to join the session to observe, draw etc.

INDIA – ATTAKKALARI CENTRE, BANGALORE JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2015

Charlotte Jarvis

We are thrilled to announce our first Indian dance exchange. Charlotte Jarvis is the Scottish dance artist at the FACETS Choreography Residency (5 January to 5 February), part of the Attakkalari India Biennial (6 – 15 Feb), organised by Attakkalari Centre for Movement Arts in Bangalore. This internationally-renowned residency offers choreographers a four-week intensive programme that will allow for collaborations with mentors from across the world along with production and financial support. The residents will also premiere their new work, developed during the residency, at a special showcase during the Biennial which follows FACETS. Organised by Attakkalari every two years since 2000, the Attakkalari India Biennial has emerged as the largest and most important festival for contemporary dance and movement arts in South Asia and sees performance works from around 20 countries each edition. Jayachandran Palazhy is the visionary Artistic Director who continues to encourage and nurture the Indian contemporary dance community. His work in India over two decades has been amazing, and he has driven contemporary forms of dance forward there with passion and sensitivity. We are thrilled to be part of this journey and to complete the circle we will invite an Indian artist to Scotland later in the year. Find out more about where Charlotte will go and who the other participants are, by visiting www.attakkalari.org
