About the Emerald Ball To be honest, this is the actually the Emerald Ball’s 56th Anniversary, making the Emerald Ball one of the oldest ballroom competitions in U.S. History - but how did it all start? In 1962, legendary dancers Ken & Sheila Sloan began the Emerald Ball in San Mateo, California. For 26 years, Ken & Sheila promoted the competition and helped it flourish all while winning the United States Ballroom Champion title multiple times and becoming inducted Ken & Sheila Sloan, c. 1970s
into the Hall of Fame.
In 1989, Club 2005 dance studio owners and professional competitors Wayne & Donna Eng purchased the Emerald Ball Dancesport Championships from Ken & Sheila. Since then, the Emerald Ball has exploded in popularity.

To help the new organizers, Wayne approached Terry Leone to become a partner. Terry, who worked directly under Arthur Murray and owned the Arthur Murray studio in Beverly Hills, was featured on the Merv Griffin show at least 50 times to promote Arthur Murray studios and was the co-host for the PBS show Championships Ballroom Dancing. Terry passed away in 1994. Since 1994, Wayne and Donna became the sole organizers and owners of the Emerald Ball and have

made the competition one of America’s premier events. In 2013, the Emerald Ball became the first Pro/Am competition in the world with over 15,000+ entries and continues to be one of the largest competitions in the United States.
