Emerald Ball Review The Event Itself The 2015 Emerald Ball Dancesport Championships

was an unforgettable event filled with endless energy, amazing performances, and heartfelt memories. The Organizers Wayne and Donna Eng poured tremendous thought and effort into every detail of the event. Giving out beautiful Emerald Jewels as awards, the Emerald Ball News Letter, a Dance Camp, 24 hour Practice Room, a channel committed to featuring the highest level of instructional videos from DanceVision, an enormous LED screen on stage and the most elegantly lit and decorated Ballroom. With quarter-finals and first rounds in practically all the professional divisions. Each evening was packed with the intensity of heated competition at its best keeping the Ballroom filled with spectators anxiously awaiting the results round after round until the top six stood standing to battle. The days filled with incredible pro-am and Amatuer dancing with quarter and semi finals in singles dances. But perhaps the most touching and memorable was the heartfelt tribute to Brian Puttock on Saturday night before the Carolina Orlovsky at the Professional Standard Division took the floor, we were swept away 2015 Emerald Ball with a montage of photographs from a life time of contribution to the World of Dancesport and his devoted wife Susan Puttock. In his memory a slow Foxtrot was played as all the professional couples danced in his honor and outstanding life. We stood swaying, crying and remembering. Sunday was filled with what could easily be called the Junior BlackPool of the U.S. with Quarter Finals in many of the Junior and Youth Divisions we were left on a high watching future champions and soon to be legends of Dancesport emerge before our very eyes. A event that any competitor, spectator or lover of Dancesport would not want to miss!

Emerald Ball Review Quality and Quantity! (Children’s Day Review) By Alan Dixon

The final day

of the hugely successful Emerald Ball belonged to the kids. With quarter finals in almost every event, it was clearly evident that the numbers of competitive children ensured that the Emerald Ball have both quantity and quality. The Emerald Ball is truly one of the majors in our domestic calendar and the children did not disappoint. As a testament to the studio owners, teachers and parents alike, the grooming of the children was in my mind much better as was the adherence of the NDCA syllabi. It takes a team effort to produce the necessary elements of success and I would like to commend all of them involved. Parents need to find a good school or qualified instructor and allow he, or she, to do what they do best, which is to develop dancers. Teachers on the other hand, should know that they carry a weight of responsibility in cementing solid foundations into the children. On that note, I would like to add a word of advice, not only from my lips but widely discussed in the “judges room”. The quality of the pre-teens’ various basic actions and understanding of timing is delightful to see and highly commendable. At the same time,

when children mature and develop open routines, we feel that the continuing education of those same actions is very necessary; footwork, foot placements, foot shaping, posture, position, lead and follow etc. are equally important in Open Syllabus work as in the Closed, possibly even more so, as the young ladies go into heels and bodies often shoot upwards without the strength of an adult body. In short, if you want to do the Open figures well, learn the basics! There are some great examples in the professional fields: The current World number one and two in the Professional Ballroom, Arunus and Victor, have spent decades learning sound principles from decades of studying basic figures with the top coaches. In Latin, such devotion to basic priciples has given us Yulia Zagoruychenko’s sublime ability to make every step look easy. Equally so, many of the truly greats are remembered for the quality of their basics: Andrew Sinkinson’s 3 Step, or Reverse Wave, Hanna Karttunen’s Rumba Walk, Allan Tornsberg’s Lead and connection. After all, most of the advanced figures have their origins from figures in the Syllabus so it stands to reason that good basics, equal beautiful advanced figures. There were many very talented, very beautiful, hard-working and dedicated children at the Emerald Ball this year. With continued application to the foundational principles of ballroom dancing, the USA has a very bright future indeed.

competitions in USA. It is held in the beautiful Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles, CA. This competition has been organized by Wayne & Donna Eng for 26 years, and has since become one of America’s premier ballroom events and a “must do” competition for people to attend either as competitors or spectators! From huge Pro-Am divisions, to Amateurs & Professionals, and of course to all the Junior divisions – the quality of dance was top notch! I was honored to be a part of the distinguished panel of Adjudicators. The competition atmosphere was so positive and friendly that you could forget about a competitive factor and really enjoy beautiful dancing of this great event. Moreover there are so many places to go in your spare time, that you can plan a little vacation while coming to Emerald Ball. Wayne & Donna have thought of everything! Congratulations on another yet very successful year!

I was asked to cover the Youth Championship 5-Dance Ballroom Event that was a part of a Friday Evening Session. This event was a 6 couple final that attracted the most successful couples throughout the United States: 1st – Murat Medzhidov & Valerie Dubinsky (3,1,1,1,1) – very young and exciting couple to watch! They both have a lot of power & energy and they were able to showcase it from their first dance to the last that night. This couple had the best stamina. Their Quickstep was by far the best on the floor! Murat’s upper body was very active with lots of shapes. I liked Valerie’s look that night: beautiful hair & make-up and gorgeous Emerald Dress! For a new partnership, Murat & Valerie looked together and fluent. Congratulations on well-deserved win! 2nd – Scott Nicholson & Evgeniya Gorobets (1,3,2,2,2) – tall and very good-looking couple! Very good start with the Waltz: confidence, good movement, good usage of feet and legs. I didn’t see enough shapes and volume though. By the 4th dance they looked a bit tired. I would recommend working more on their stamina. They both have a lot of potential. Congratulations on your 2nd place! 3rd – Robert McShinsky & Peyton Munson (2,2,3,3,3) – very elegant couple with good floor presence! They also started very good, but

by Viennese Waltz they got tired and lost their frame and positions. For such a tall couple I would like to see them move much more and use their legs. I would also like to see them more in right to right position, sometimes Peyton would shift to Robert’s center. But in general I like this couple, I think they have a lot of potential as well. Congratulations on your bronze medals! 4th – Brandon Keck & Kaylee Christensen (4,4,4,4,4) – goodlooking couple. I like their big & beautiful shapes. But Kaylee’s top was a bit too high. I would like to see them both more grounded in their feet. I would suggest spending more time on improving basic principles of Ballroom Dancing.

5th – Peter Wilk & Necole Sheiman (5,5,5,5,5) – good-looking couple that has great potential. I would like to see their top improved (it was too low). They looked a bit flat for me with no usage of their tops. Stamina has to be improved as well.

6th – John Swiger & Arina Shtykova (6,6,6,6,6) – They looked a bit heavy that night. In my opinion there was not enough drive and usage of their feet. This couple needs to improve technically. I think they need more time in order to compete on this level.

Congratulations to all the dancers participating in The Emerald Ball Championships 2015! It was a real honor for me to be a part of this amazing event! The venue, the atmosphere, the organizers and most importantly, the level and the amount of competitors this year exceeded all expectations! Once

all professional categories. Or is it the amount of dancers who come back year after year? Maybe this is the measure of a competitionâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s success and if so, Emerald Ball is a wonderfully successful event!

Every year during the Emerald Ball, a Dance Camp is held for students, amateurs and professionals who want to expand their knowledge and skill of dance. The 2015 Dance Camp was no different and successful in the eyes of both instructors and students.

Now that the dust has settled & we are back home, I wanted to thank you & all of the Dance Vision staff for such a wonderful production! My husband & I have been dancing on and off for 10 years now but we never saw a live competition. I’m convinced we have now seen the best! Also, ever since we retired about 7 years ago, we have lived in a small town where there is not enough interest in Ballroom Dancing to attract good teachers or coaches and as a result, our progress as dancers has suffered. The instructors that Dance Vision offered and the variety of topics covered were perfect for us; definitely top notch and very inspiring! (...)
