New Canyon Vista Medical Center, Gould Turner Group

Firm History and Culture Gould Turner Group, P.C. (GTG) is an architectural, planning, and interior design firm based in Nashville, Tennessee that was founded in 1980. Led by Linda Marzialo, AIA, ACHA, our team of architects and support staff work with facilities across the United States, on projects that range from renovations and additions to campus master plans and new facilities. Our office is a certified Women Business Enterprise (WBE) as defined by the State of Tennessee. Principals and Project Architects are responsible for professional services and are actively involved with the delivery of services. Our process is a planned, systematic quality control process that involves the owner, users, occupants, operations and maintenance staff, design professionals, and contractors. We have found that each project is unique and complex requiring diligence, knowledge, creativity, and a willingness to overcome challenges to ensure that the design is appropriate and can meet an array of project needs. Over time, the cost of erecting facilities is far less significant than the cost of operating them when personnel, maintenance, and energy costs are considered. Today, our design commitment remains the same as it did when the firm was founded which is ‘To design environments that people will thrive in, that are functional, aesthetically compelling, economically constructed, durable and easily maintained.’ We hope this portfolio will provide you with useful insight.

We Use Metrics Data is stronger than opinion, which is why we internally track historical data which often informs future project solutions. Our data considers response time, request for information categories, and project scheduling. Sustainability We advocate that each project diminish the use of energy, reduce the use of nonrenewable resources and account for water, material, and environmental impacts within our projects. 4 of our team members are LEED Accredited. Location With healthcare, education, commercial, and community projects in 48 states across the country, we are well suited to travel to better serve our clients, regardless of their location. We operate from our home office in Nashville, TN.

With our 3D printer, we are able to provide our clients with a tangible image of their project. Community

Gould Turner Group (GTG) and its employees support our community through donations to organizations, such as the Nashville Symphony, Cheekwood Botanical Gardens, and the Frist Art Museum, and by actively participating in numerous charitable events, including those that support leukemia and breast cancer research, the Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital, and Second Harvest Food Bank, among others.

Digital Modeling

In the early 2000s, Gould Turner Group became one of the first firms in Nashville to adopt three-dimensional Building Information Modeling (BIM) technology. Today, all of our production team members are trained on Autodesk Revit Architecture. Advanced members of our team assist with the ongoing training of others, as well as with the implementation of CAD processes that help standardize production throughout the office.

Workplace

GTG’s open studio spaces are conducive to collaboration, teamwork, creativity, good communication, and to a free exchange of ideas. We have a very open door policy and a do-what-it-takes attitude.

Guiding Design Principles. Aided by research, evidence-based design, and technology, these principles guide our healthcare design process.

Commitment Toward Wellness

Creating Responsible Care Environments

The concept that the built environment can have a positive impact to health outcomes is a generally accepted fact in today’s environments.

With each of our designs, it is our intention to encourage responsible architecture. We feel it is important to investigate how buildings relate to their environment and consider how they may adapt over their life span. Each building can be designed so that it makes a positive contribution to its surroundings, including adjacent buildings, streets, and pedestrian ways. Noninstitutional environments, easy access, and clear wayfinding lessen patient anxiety and support ease of use.

Research has proven that hospital and medical facility planning can support health initiatives as use functions continue to change and organizations consider how to anchor their services among the community. We are aware of the many challenges facing healthcare providers today, including reimbursement models that reward hospitals for value and outcomes over volume. The incorporation of proven evidenced based design concepts can have a measurable effect of shortening hospital stays and improving patient outcomes, which directly effect the hospital’s bottom line. We understand that healthcare facilities must be flexible, adaptable, and responsive to changing needs. There is not a one-size-fits-all approach. We design to accommodate function, flow, and operational efficiency, as well as from a wellness perspective that respects the patient, family, and caregivers.

Responsible care as a design focus affords us opportunities to bring natural daylight into our buildings, develop views internally and externally, and to make connections that bridge activities within a building to the life and activity beyond. Building entrances are places of meeting and gathering for people. They can be designed to welcome and encourage visitors by being comfortable, highly visible, and well lit. Responsible architecture brings security and richness to people’s lives. GOULDTURNER.com | 11

3D Technology for the Entire Considering the Significance Design Process of the Building GTG’s project team embraces multiple visual design platforms, collaborative model-based drafting programs, and digital printing instruments throughout the architectural process. We are able to test the look and feel of a space, print a test model to visualize the components of a building, and translate complex Building Information Modeling (BIM) information to our project engineers and consultants. Beyond the core design and production capabilities of our digital modeling platforms, 3D modeling helps to improve project coordination across disciplines.

The process of adapting a hospital or other type healthcare facility within its region or neighborhood can create a sense of belonging for the patient that contributes to the vitality of the community. As we undertake each project, we are dedicated to understand how the neighborhood functions within its regional setting to determine features that might deserve special consideration. Understanding attributes that have significance can extend the boundary of the healthcare facility into the community.

Energy Efficiency and Conservation As architects, we are accustomed to working together with our engineers and contracting team to arrive at solutions that provide an efficient use of energy and natural resources. Components such as demand controlled ventilation, day-lighting, exterior shading to redirect light, building orientation, advanced building controls, and other systems may be considered. All of these components can contribute to a healthy building, enhance the value of the structure, and reduce the energy costs over the lifespan of the building.

North Alabama Medical Center LOCATION: TYPE: SIZE: COST-FINAL: COMPLETE:

Florence, Alabama Hospital 485,000 SF $145,000,000 Dec. 2018

NARRATIVE: The North Alabama Medical Center is a new replacement hospital with 263 all-private patient rooms that is located on a 30-acre Medical Campus in Florence, Alabama. Designed with a contemporary architectural style, the interior spaces have a local charm, reminiscent of color tones found within the community and along the Tennessee River. As a memento to Shoals history, open-web trusses in the lobby draw inspiration from ‘The Old Railroad Bridge at Florence,’ which is a historic landmark symbolic of growth and a connection to the greater Muscle Shoals area. Modern healthcare facilities promote patient privacy and dignity while enhancing the efficiency of use for caregivers, patients, and families. In this project, circulation is arranged to maximize the functional relationships between all departments while separating the public guests from inpatient and outpatient care. All major hospital ancillary departments are located along the perimeter of the building on the first floor and are planned to expand horizontally. The building is a multi-story six-floor vertical design with the structure planned to permit portions of the building to expand vertically. A Medical Office Building is attached directly to the hospital and a future Cancer Center is planned for the site.

Wesley Children’s Hospital LOCATION: TYPE:

SIZE: COMPLETE: COMPLETED:

Wichita, Kansas Converted-Use Renovation Rebranding 43,100 GSF August 2015 January 2017

PROGRAM: Children’s Hospital lobby, administrative area, patient rooms, support space. RECOGNITION: • KSN-TN News ‘ Wesley Hospital Lights Up the Night’ • KWCH News ‘Wesley Opens-Up in a “Super” Way!’ FEATURES: • Implemented Integrated Project Delivery strategies to solve challenges encountered in older construction. • Low floor-to-floor heights required careful consideration. • Renovation addressed three existing buildings with unique challenges originally constructed between 1920 and 1970. • Opened ahead of schedule.

NARRATIVE: This project entailed renovation and expansion to transform an old 1955 traditional hospital structure to a modern, vibrant, welcoming Children’s Hospital. Along with the requirement of meeting a sophisticated functional program, a great deal of emphasis was placed upon image, aesthetics and the appropriateness of materials for a young population. The building had to be eye catching and transformative from first view and had to present a stress-free environment for the children. Because the building structure was old and accurate existing plans were not available, the design team had to provide good early due diligence and work closely with the contractor to attempt to mitigate any negative impact unknown conditions could have had on the budget. Wesley Children’s Hospital is located street side within an urban setting. The opportunity to create a covered drop off lane to serve the main entrance was extremely limited and required creativity and thoughtful design.
