CASA D’ESPANYA Cheekwood: Future of Art and Technology.

Disruptive innovation comes in every dimension - 3D Printing is just the start. Que’ Bueno. A trip to Spain’s Alhambra inspired Casa d’Espanya, an installation by Gould Turner Group that debuted at Nashville’s Cheekwood Botanical Garden as part of its “International Playhouse” exhibition. Moorishinflected motifs appeared in porcelain mosaic on the outer structure. Instide it stood a 3D printeded open-cell thermoplastic sculpture.

Competition Board SCALE The playhouse will sit at 16’ x 16’ by 8’ high, and will be able to occupy any of the given Cheekwood build sites. Because of the flexibility of the materials chosen, the way that the structure meets the ground plane can adapt to the landscape, creating the opportunity for variation in ground surface materials and patterns.

TRADITION

EXPERIENCE

FORM

The Cheek’s visit to theAlhambra inspired the architectural plan layout of the Spanish playhouse. The traditional fortress design features courtyards defined by arcades of columns. The traditional Moorish motifs and arches also inform the interior playfulness of the space.

Antoni Gaudi’s mechanical use of the parabolic arch to create both structural and sculptural spaces inspire the organic form of the Spanish playhouse. This form is achieved through the use of 3D printing by Branch Technology.

Colorful mosaics inspired by Gaudi’s Park Güell and arched openings aim to draw children to enter the Spanish inspired playhouse. Children will move through the formal exterior shell into the interior structure to reveal a space shaped by fluid walls and columns that join to create undulating arches above them. These forms terminate at a large central opening in the ceiling plane, where various opportunities for activity will occur. Fabric and cord can be woven through the structure, 3D printed movable furniture and objects can be rearranged and interacted with, and wind chimes and bells can be played. These spatial variations intend to create a sense of discovery in the children.

MATERIAL IMPLEMENTATION

Juxtaposition is created through the use of the irregular patterns in the mosaic walls combined with the more structured 3D printed plastic ceiling. The juxtaposition is a nod to past and present building techniques in the field of architecture and also to the past and present experiences of the Cheek family in Spain.

With a given construction budget of $10,000, efficiency in implementation and execution of construction is critical. Through generous donation of mosaic materials from Daltile and Louisville Tile, as well as a discounted 3D print rate of $100/cf from Branch Technology, Gould Turner Group envisions a fun and playful space that can be constructed within budget. The playhouse will utilize 300sf of mosaic tile overlaid on a wood frame and plywood shell, forming colorful exterior. archways on the exterior r The interior arches and columns will be be a 3D printed structure, totaling under 40cf. un n

March 24, 2016

Architectural Narrative Exterior Climate The structure will be installed at Cheekwood Botanical Gardens between April and September. The structure will be exposed to the elements of rain, humidity, high temperatures, and direct sunlight for the duration of the exhibit. The structure will not be exposed to freeze-thaw cycles or below freezing temperatures for the duration of the exhibit. While the exhibit may be reused or repurposed after the exhibit, there is presently no plan to design a structure to last for an extended duration.

Construction Concerns Building Size: 16’ x 16’ x 8’ Tall, wood framing and mosaic on exterior, 3D print by Branch Technology on the Interior Transportation: Portions of the exhibit are designed to be modular. Panels will require delivery to the site using a truck with 8’min clearance or a flatbed. Workspace: Delays may be caused by weather and the available hours of daylight. A protected work environment is necessary and has not been procured. Site Slope: The site chosen by Cheekwood Slopes appx. 2’ over a 16’ distance.
